Louis Williams?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=stein_marc&page=NBA-Notes-080719

What are your thoughts? I'm not sure how much a poor man's Monta will be able to play. Personally, with CJ Watson around I think we've had enough of scoring guards (though he is working on being a distributor now). I suppose with a legit offer to Williams, we would be losing Azubuike.

I'm for matching Kaz first before making an offer.

interesting....

since Williams models his game after Monta. I really hope Bukie gets resigned.

Delonte West

I know he’s not as talented as Williams but would probably be cheaper. I like his game. He was great in the playoffs last year. He would be a good backup for Monta, can play either guard spot. I love Kellena and hope they match but Kellena, Magette, Jackson all seem like forwards in guards bodies or vice versa or something, we need a real backcourt guy who can bring the ball up smooth to take pressure off Monta in his new role as point guard. plus he’s funny as hell and his name rhymes with Monta. But would he fit in with the Warriors? There’s something about him that seems hellof Eastern Conference and I don’t even know what that means.

Sorry

That was meant as a response to Dime’s free agent point guard link.

Lou Williams

can play the point though. He’s young and has some nastiness to him. I like this choice and we could lure him away from the Sixers with the opp to play minutes which he couldn’t do last year w/ Andre Miller. I’m enjoying hearing that the Dubs are in the mix with a lot of players..this is exciting.

Strange but interesting

He’s very similar to Monta. Not sure how theyd fit together, especially defensively. but it would be fun to watch at least!

by sam23 on Jul 19, 2008 12:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, please

I love Lou Williams’ game. He’s not the ideal size to complement Monta, obviously, but he basically is Monta 1B: lightning fast, athletic, fearless. Plus, at 22 — exactly a year and a day younger than Monta — he still has tons of upside. Check out his career per 36 minutes stats:

16.5 pts
5.0 ast
3.4 reb
1.4 stl
5.3 fta
75.7 ft%
42.9 fg%
34.7 3 pt%
52.1 ts%

Some very, very nice #s for such a young kid. He and Monta, either in tandem or as a tag team, could be a nightmare matchup for opponents.

Monta/WIlliams
Jackson/Belinelli
Maggette/Randolph
Harrington/Wright
Biedrins/Turiaf

I’d happily flip Beli for Buki in that equation, and I still fantasize about ways to dump TMNT and finaigle JSmooth, but I’m basically happy with that crew.

Sign ^^^^ !!

just saw this

yea i am a big fan of louis williams. i would love to see the warriors pick him up, but i don’t want to give up azubuike without being assured that we would get louis williams. if we signed williams to an offer sheet-let azubuike walk-then have the sixers match, that would be pretty disappointing. i’m willing to give up azubuike for williams but not both.

sure i know sooner or later this thread is gonna get a lot of discussion about how monta and williams can’t play together in the backcourt in the future, but at this point i don’t really care. i want some excitement!

a future of:
louis williams
monta ellis
anthony randolph
brandan wright
andris biedrins
ronny turiaf
marco belinelli
would be an extremely fast and athletic team that would present extremely tough matchup problems. i don’t think the backcourt would play any defense nor have any size, but hopefully our young bigs will develop into long (albiet thin) shot blockers/changers.

by gogoldenbears on Jul 19, 2008 1:49 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think

In those first 6 names you listed you could have 6 of the 8 or 9 man rotation needed to make up a really good team. And they are all very young (I think Turiaf is the oldest at 25) Theyd obviously need to find another guard (preferably a PG with size) and another swingman (Maggette? or maybe someone with a better outside shot) but I think if they can keep that core together it would be a great foundation. Louis Williams could be a great 3rd guard, and Turiaf should be a solid 3rd big man.

I like the idea of Williams a lot better than Sessions right now.

Sorry Sleepy!

I think Williams has the track record over Sessions as well. Williams isn’t a PG, and probably can’t play alongside Monta for an extended period of time. But it still can work! Look at New Orleans last year when they trotted out CP3 and Jannero Pargo + Bobby Jackson. They had a big frontcourt that could stop penetration and force opposing teams to shoot jumpshots.

Monta + Louis won’t be a great good defensive backcourt, but i can see them being at least servicable if we can have the length of AB, Brandan and AR backing them up down low.

williams

i think louis williams would be a great addition to the warriors. i think we would flourish in our system similar to how monta has. he would probably back up monta at the point?

is there a way where we could sign williams as well as keep/match the clipper’s offer for azubuike? that would really solidify our bench

by jaredl10 on Jul 19, 2008 4:43 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i say we get either this guy, or make a play for bobby brown. im not enthralled by the idea of cj watson as backup point gaurd.

Would be interesting

Williams and Monta were former rivals in high school.

Bring on the BD Show!!!

I really like this idea

Especially because Philly is gonna be capped out. We would not have to pay him much. Sure, he and Monta cannot play at the same time that much, but the kid can score. He is just starting to figure it out and he would be instant offense off the bench.

by Nellieball on Jul 19, 2008 10:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

ok here's what the warriors need to do

sign monta and andris THIS WEEK so that they can see how much money is left over!!!!!!

only THEN can the dubz truly decide how much they can/should offer Williams, and if they can/should match Kaz’s offer…

by Run Dubz on Jul 20, 2008 12:12 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Nice idea but

If we sign both Monta and Beans now we won’t have money for Louis Williams. There is approximately 5.5 mil in cap space left and we probably can add another player before having to resign our RFA’s.

by joestar on Jul 20, 2008 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't panic Run Dubz.

Not many other RFA’s are being signed right now either.

If they sign either, I can tell you exactly how much they can offer Williams: NBA Minimum. That’s all they’ll have.

I'm diggin LW's game...

I think he would fit right into Nellie’s system, as long as he can stay disciplined and not play circus ballcoughLarry Hughescough

salary cap

alright ill admit that i dont have a very good handle on the whole salary cap rules and whatnot. all i know is that there’s a salary cap and a luxury tax threshold, and that you can exceed the cap if you hold a player’s bird rights.

so my logic was that if we sign Beans and Monta soon, we can see how much money is left under the luxury tax threshold.

but from what i think you guys are saying, it seems that if we sign our RFAs, the salary cap limit “fills up”, as opposed to the region between the salary cap and the luxury tax threshold. so it would be much wiser to sign whatever FAs we can now leaving enough room under the salary cap+luxary threshold to sign monta and biedrins.

ok i dont know if that made any sense. if anyone actually understood that, can you tell me if my reasoning is right?

by Run Dubz on Jul 21, 2008 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

pickin' up LOU WILL ...

would be GOLDEN. His game definitely fits the DUB style.

Think of it this way....

In order to get WIlliams we are going to have to make a 2-3 million a year offer to the guy, and lets be honest, that is the same we are going to have to spend to keep Buki.

Think about this; knowing what we know about Buki, if at last years deadline we traded buki to the sixers for williams, would you have been happy? A role player for us who plays d and rebounds for a sharpshooter fan favorite who lights it up down the stretch? I would have been content, trade piece for piece.

NOW look at the current; we have a back up at the position that Buki plays, and he knows it. Is he really a “2”? We know he is fighting time with all the pieces the team has going.

I say this: If we had a chance to keep Buki AND get a guy like Williams (who I will admit I really really like) to back up point, I say fantastic! But if we have to realistically choose between Williams and Buki for a team like this right now, I say you gotta go with Williams to back up point with Monta or play beside him, and let Buki fight for minutes as a starter in LA. Business is full of tough decisions, but you cant really go wrong on this one: bot paths are winners

by pinkycheal on Jul 21, 2008 9:32 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i agree completely

i say they are about the same “caliber” player, but we need Williams’ skills much much more than Kaz’s right now.
