In Vegas: Belinelli to Wear Many Hats
Here's my last Warriors-related piece from Vegas .. I've got a lot of things in the oven, but most of it is league-wide interest.
I finally got a chance to talk to Marco and the coaching staff about what he really needs to do to get more playing time during the season. He's not headed to Utah for the Revue, so what we have seen is basically what we will get.
The interesting thing, at least to me, is how much Marco's opinion of his own game changed as the week wore on. I think he's on the right track, for sure, because he's starting to see that he has to do so much more than just be a shooter in this league.
That growth is beginning to present itself. His defense is still leaving something to be desired, but I see growth in his offensive game, and we all know that THAT's probably important to Nellie anyway.
As an FYI - Nellie has been to every game in Vegas.

Marco Belinelli back up point guard?
He’s big enough to play alongside Monta but it’s not a question if he can guard the opposing two. At this point, the question is can he play tolerable defense (regardless of position) to help him at least stay on the floor?
He’s not a very bad defender—I think he’s a good help defender with adept hands. But he seems to struggle staying in front of his man (I just finished watching the game against the Raps where Belinelli, who seems to be playing point, just saw his man drive from one side of the court to another for a layup). He has good defensive IQ from what my non-expert eyes has seen, and is capable of playing decent defense, but half of the time it seems like he’s not even trying. And it feels like he gets stuck at every screen thrown his away.

oh... forgot
At this point I’ll take his passing skills over his shooting. He’s a joy to watch shooting when he’s knockin ‘em down, but he really needs to work on consistency.

I was a little disappointed
That Marco failed to mention rebounding the ball as one of the many hats he should be wearing. Dude is 6’6” and managed to snag only 8 boards total in the five LV games. Unfortunately, that’s pretty consistent with his previous work. If he started crashing the boards in addition to improving his ballhandling, I might have a little hope for his NBA prospects. Given JAE’s comments about the consistency of players’ rebounding rates from year to year, I’m not holding my breath.

Marco's passing was surprising; Hendrix looked good
I’ve been a hater the past week, but today was a great showcase of Marco skills. First, he didn’t force his shot - he let the game come to him and took what was there. He did force a few in the second half, but it was at a time when he got into a zone after a few good plays (steals and great assists) and he was amped. And he hit the shots. He seems to have really, really good court vision. Surprisingly good, and at this point (sans Baron) quite possibly the best on the Warriors. His lateral quickness is still the main problem, but he does deflect a decent number of cross-court passes, which means to me that he has good instincts… If he can build on today’s game, I’ll admit that I’m leaving Vegas more excited about him than I was when I got here - and that’s after watching 3 games in person, 1 online and the other on TV.
One other quick comment: I was pretty happy with what I saw of Hendrix today, too. He has a nose for the ball—both on rebounds and in deflecting passes that cross the lane. He seems to have decent speed (although it was clear he got winded pretty quick, but it was his first game). Some nice blocks as well. He did blow some defensive rotations and give up some easy buckets, but not bad for his first game… I hope he makes the team.

Indy redux?
Shawne Williams just got onto thinner ice with Bird by this latest incident – if we can’t pawn Kosta’s contract off on them, maybe they’d consider a wholesome, hardworking Marco in exchange for their 6’9, 225 lb forward averaging 6-7 ppg and a handful of rebounds in 15 mpg? Not a championship-making trade, but we might get some value out of that $1.5m court side seat …

I'm down if you can get anything for this dud I'm for it.
I can’t quite understand why so many people on this blog are so pumped for Marco. In the last two games he didn’t play well at all and Douby torched him off the dribble consistently this guy can’t play a lick of man to man defense! His shot selection is poor and why does he always dribble into the right corner and then stop his dribble only to have to make some leaping pass. This guy sucks not to mention he doesn’t ever grab a rebound. He’s crap trade the bum now while you still can. Please bring back Kelenna I really don’t want to see Marco play at all!
It's all about the killer cross-over baby!

Hold on a minute
Let’s see if he can play first. It’s tough to make a fair evaluation on the rook’s game when he didn’t even play. We’ll see what he does with the 10-15 minutes Nellie throws at him. If he plays well, great, if he doesn’t, I won’t shed tears for him cuz we’ll have another 1st or 2nd round prospect just like em next year. We all want Marco to do well obviously, but you also shouldn’t hold such high expectations for an 18th pick who didn’t even get a fair chance to show what he can do for you. Blame the media and beat writers for all the “love” Marco receives from the fans. Nellie went back on his word after labeling Belinelli a “help now” guy. But that’s his right as a coach if he feels the player isn’t ready. But the writers shouldn’t be putting sun god robes on Marco making him look like the second coming who’s going to do it all right the first time. They are the one’s who should be apologizing, not Marco.
Now I don’t consider myself a Belinelli guy. His attitude doesn’t really impress me. He seemed to be bitter about sitting out most of his first season in the NBA, when asked about it during post season interviews. I wouldn’t blame him if the disappointment lied within himself…but it almost seemed like he blamed the coaches while he was rolling his eyes around, like it was Nellie’s decision that kept him from tearing up the league. Maybe I missed all that completely, but I didn’t appreciate what I thought I saw.
I think Marco would do well to drop ALL expectations of himself, and just start approaching the NBA game like a young player should. Just focusing on improving his weaknesses, polishing his craft, and steadily working towards the kind of player he and staff think he can be. Do that, rather than thinking how well you should be playing, and thinking you’re ready when you’re really not.
I like his skills. He moves well, he handles well, he passes beautifully, he’s aggressive, and we’re all hoping the jump shot comes along very soon. There is nothing worse, more despicable, more useless, more scum…than a reluctant scorer, and he’s not that. Let’s give him a chance to show some improvement this year, rather than banishing him to the toilet, and sending Larry Bird to pick up the garbage.

lest we forget, those expectations were set by
none other than Mullin, not the beat writers …
how much more does anyone need to see? the coaching staff saw him all last year, played KAz ahead of him, and from the write ups of the SL games he’s not only not better but worse this year than last year despite his NBA experience …
