Oklahoma City Team Name Announced...
According to ESPNEWS, The team previously known as the Seattle Supersonics will now be referred to as The Oklahoma City Thunder. Now the Dubs have a lightning bolt as part of their logo and i know thunder and lightning aren't the same thing but they are both used in the same context. i think it's pretty stupid, i mean come on Our Mascot Is Named Thunder. We were here first. choose something original. or something that doesnt have anything else to do with other NBA teams. Cyclones, Hurricanes. Sorry OKC, i dont think its cool that u chose thunder we already have the mascot and the lightning bolt on the back of our jerseys to go with it. wat u guys think? maybe overreacting a little, but what the hell are they gonna use to symbolize thunder? obviously its gonna have something to do with lightning like ours. Biters...

uhmmm....
maybe it’s about time we actually do something that resembles our name. I mean, we are named the Warriors. Yet, as you pointed out, we have lightning on our logo and Thunder as our mascot.
No more Baron, we are entering presumably the Monta era. I’ve heard some already cried for it. Is it about time for a change?
by lightz0ut on Jul 19, 2008 9:50 PM PDT 0 recs
I actually liked the whole logo scheme
I guess the ‘thunder’ in our logo, as well as the colors, are supposed to symbolize us as an ‘electrifying’ team. When you look at the Warriors logo, the thunder bolt that the mascot is holding can be looked at as a spear…. so I guess that somewhat resembles our name. It does look like our mascot is wearing a tribe mask too.

Did you know that our name...
Is actually referring to Native Americans, and we had to change our logo back in the 60’s or 70’s so as to not be offensive. I know several teams still use Native American imagery, but back in the day it was much more rampant aka Stanford’s mascot was a native american.
Man why couldn’t OKC name themselves the Tornadoes, since they are like the tornado capital of the world.

yeah
I knew it originated from the native american logo, that’s why I mentioned that the thunderbolt that the mascot is holding can be looked at as a spear haha.

they’d have to get something both midwestern and urban sounding is hard. Oh, they’re state animal is the Bisons. That’s not bad.

Sounds corny but I think people will get used to it.
Shouldn’t be much different than names like the “Magic”, “Heat”, “Jazz” etc.
Oklahoma City Barons or Oklahoma City Sooners would have been good names. And yeah I know there’s already a team called the “Oklahoma Sooners”, but Oklahoma already has a football team named Thunder as well.

The league just got that much suckier
We lose the Seattle Sonics (Supersonics) for the Oklahoma City Thunder????? That… is… a suck! I have been to both cities, so I’m speaking from some experience when I say the NBA just went down a notch. Hell, Tacoma is a more cosmopolitan city. The Oklahoma City Thunder sound like a development league team. Pitiful!

I LIKE ALL OUR TEAM STUFF.
i love our jersey, i love our color scheme, i love our thunderbolt symbols, i love thunder especially when he acts lik an angry black woman. OKC should either be called the disasters, rage, storm, raging storms, rapids, anything that relates to the whether they got or the Seattle Supersonics of Oklahoma City. they do that for other teams

by the biter or bust. pick one, they are going to be the gizz’s when they were in Canada.sorry ass team. we need a new logo and jersey. We could bring the old school 90’s era jersey looks again. Now those were some jersey.
by warriorfan4life on Jul 20, 2008 4:12 AM PDT 0 recs
No we don't
If you think about it, our current uniform are an improved, updated version of the early ‘90s uniform (stylized text in similar placement and color). Though to be fair, those ‘90s ones are the only good throwbacks we have since all the ones before it have not aged well.

What an awful name
Shoulda been the OKC (poop) kickers.
Thunder is massively boring and all of the alternatives I read sounded better.
It fits how lame that entire franchise is now. Losing the Sonics is an abomination.

Huge thumbs down
The only side benefit it is might compel us to dump “Thunder,” the smurf on steroids, and the lightning bolt (a perfectly elegant symbol, graphically, but already taken by Gatorade, the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Shazam, among others, and not really appropriate to a quasi-desert area like the Bay).
Beyond that, Oklahoma City Thunder sounds like the kind of drivel you get when you try to pass something through too many committees of too many corporate suits: the least inspired, least offensive, most gutless option. Of the ones I heard bandied about, by far my favorite was the “Oklahoma City !” (inspired by the musical “Oklahoma!”) I mean, think of the great debates it would inspire about how to pronounce it: is it the “OKLAHOMA CITY!!!!” or “the Oklahoma City Exclamation Point” or “the Oklahoma City Chhk” (the band ”!!!” is apparently pronounced “chk chk chk”)...?
Of course, ! also would have come with a bold, ready-made logo. Imagine a big exclamation point at halfcourt, or on the side of the shorts? What a missed opportunity!

I like the "!" idea
Especially the idea of putting it on the logos. I’m picturing a giant white exclamation point on the chest, with an otherwise-plain black jersey and shorts. And tall black socks. And black shoes. It would be very Pop Art. Or very Batman (the TV show, not the movie).

PS
Just to pile on to how stupid this move is: What’s with this logic that owners just move teams to their home towns? Jerry Jones is from Arkansas. Did he move the Cowboys to Little Rock? Who in EVER going to sign to play there. Talk about a free agent wasteland. Kevin Durant must have bought a new watch, just to count the seconds until he can bolt for the Heat, the Lakers, or the Knicks (the only three teams that will exist in the future, since those are the only places anyone apparently wants to play).
And just to take a second to eulogize the Sonics. Aside from the sickening, raw-deal aspect of the move, for the fans’s sake, it is such a loss to the culture of the NBA. I never exactly liked the Sonics, because they seemed to have the Warriors’ number in the 70s, 80, 90s, and 00s (the last year or two excepted). But I did think they were highly cool. They had an all-time great sports name: not only did it accomplish the de rigueur nod to speed and/or sleekness that fits well with a basketball team, especially in the West, it was wonderfully place-specific to a town known for building jet aircraft, wonderfully era-specific. It even had that rare, cool long-version/short-version option—a la “Knicks” or “Knickerbockers,” or even “Blazers” or “TrailBlazers.”
It’s a loss.

Especially if your home town is Oklahoma and you can afford to buy a team from seattle? I don’t understand how this guy is smart enough to make all that money but too dumb to realize he can afford to live in Seattle now instead of moving the team to Oklahoma??? !!!

Not official
I can’t find anything official about this. So far it’s still tentative. Hopefully they pick a better name; “Thunder” sounds more suited for a WNBA team associated with the Warriors.
But Sleepy is right; if they really can’t think of anything worthwhile, might as well follow the same route of the Lakers, Hornets and Jazz of taking another city’s team name with them. Last I checked those franchises are doing fine where they currently are.

Good point
I guess the Sonics are “staying” in Seattle. But following past examples of region-specific names getting moved elsewhere and considering the lack of creativity in OKC, it only makes sense.

This isn't confirmed yet, guys....
It just came out of the rumour mill from the #3 TV Station in Oklahoma City. I doubt this is going to happen. Just a week or so ago, some random guy had us believing that it would be the Oklahoma City Marshals. Anyway, I’m totally against this injustice of Oklahoma City stealing the Warriors’ mascot, and if the romour is indeed true, I’m gonna show up to every game in a Warriors jersey.

Compensation!
If they get our mascot they should send us Westbrook as compensation or Ridenour. We’d even take Wilcox. Thunder was a great mascot, but he’s getting a little long in the tooth. Time to get those commercial breaks more focused on the game. I’m sick of all the blaring music and antics every time-out, anyway. Keep it hoops-specific.
