Consolidated Free Agent Thread
Consolidated discussion for potential free agent signings for the Warriors:
OK, so I noticed that there are a lot of free agent signing ideas all over the place in different threads on this board so I was thinking it would be a good idea to consolidate our ideas to create better discussion. Obviously this is all speculation, so who would you like to see the Warriors go after?
I'm assuming we re-sign Monta Ellis and Andris Biedrins also...
Here's a list of free agents from ESPN:

going young...
PF: Leon Powe-unlikely and wishful thinking if not just because of the homer/bay area connection
SF: Josh Smith (RFA)/Josh Childress (RFA)
if not Corey Maggette (UFA) could come at a much smaller price and might be a good “short term” solution
Dorrell Wright (RFA) and Gerald Green (signed with Mavs) would (have) been interesting athletic options to take a risk on
PG: Shaun Livingston (UFA)-worth taking a flyer on. i would give him a small short term contract and sign him long term in the future if he proves he is healed
Daniel Gibson (RFA)-could be a solid backup pg, but cavs are likely to keep him
Louis Williams (RFA)-like him for some reason, but probably too similar to Monta to work together in the backcourt

Great thread topic.
For me it kind of doubles as a depression therapy, since the thought of landing Josh Smith, Andre Iguodala, or Deron Williams (next year) is one of the few things that mitigates the pain of the image of BD in a Clips uni.
I’m thinking we need to make a major play for Iguodala. Dude was born to be Warrior: Pac 10 product, athletic, mad hops, crashes the boards, dishes, plays tenacious D, scores but isn’t a ballhog. Basically, JRich with less love for the 3-ball and much better D. At 6’6”, he’s close to an ideal backcourt mate for Monta.
Obviously the 76ers will do a lot to keep him, and have the cap space to do so, but why not test how committed they are? You never know: they may want to make a play for Brand, Okafor or Arenas, and they always have Carney to step into Iguodala’s shoes…
We’re now one of a small handful of teams with the capspace make a serious play for Smith or Iggy. I’ll be pretty miffed if we don’t at least make an effort. C’mon Mully: shut the haters up and make a splash.

Josh Smith, Andre Iguodala, or Deron Williams
Smith probably want more money than he’s worth, Wright is a better value. Iggy is ok but our new skinny boy might fill that role? Would DeeRon consider the bay area? He’s one guy that can fill Barons shoes but we need someone now. Which of the teams with multiple point guards might we trade with?

Iguodala's "OK"
This coming from JRich’s #1 fanboy?
Basically Iggy does everything JRich does but plays better defense, shoots more efficiently, and takes the ball to the rack more aggressively. And he’s three years younger, with room to improve and mature with the core.
Career #s Iggy / JRich
Reb/36: 5.4 / 5.4
Ast/36: 3.9 / 3.2
Stl/36: 1.8 / 1.3
FTA/36: 4.8 / 3.9

Ok, Tell him to place an ad in the paper explaining why he should be our new Jrich and we’ll see. also wanna see him sweat and smile after windmill dunks and maybe knock down a winning three against the Mavericks for good measure.
Seriously though, who can we get this year for point? Not Hindend, if he was any good chicago woulda taken beasley. Any of the grizzly extra guards worth a shot? Where did Jarret Jack land? Will livingston be able to play at all? Is Ridnaur still alive?

Your spelling is atrocious
With Iggy and Jack helping him out and an entire offseason KNOWING he’d handle the point, Monta could make it work. I have confidence. It moves him more into the Gilbert Arenas PG role, as opposed to the Steve Nash PG role. Sounds good to me.

I like the Iggy idea
and he appears to be the only guy really worth breaking the bank for right now. I think the sixers would be crazy not to match any offer for him, but its worth a shot. Locking up Monta and Beans, adding Iggy, landing Livingston at a reasonable price and getting good value for Al and/or Jack sounds like the ideal offseason at this point.

Realistically....
i dout the Warriors will land Josh Smith, Iggy, Agent Zero etc tho it would certainly be nice to have them. IMO, there are alot of “quality” FA’s out there where the Warriors have a chance to reshape their bench.
Im in favor of resigning Pietrus, Barnes, Bukie.
Pietrus has the opportunity of becoming a starter for the Warriors can will serve a big role for them. He can finally show what he is capable of when starting. I say give him a 3yr 18mil contract.
Barnes as well has the opportunity of having a more significant role other than being the “bench captain”. We can lowball him since i dout any other team will go after him. 800K should be enough.
Bukie will have a breakout year, IMO as he will be depended more on becoming that spark off the bench. He will bring what last year and more.
Who the Warriors should target:
Flip Murray- did well in Indy and can do even better for the Warriors. He doesnt wow with anything but will do what is needed.
Jamal Tinsley- odd one out? if he is bought out, i’d love to have him as a Plan C PG who we can get for cheap since being injury prone.
Anthony Johnson- a big body gaurd like Baron, who did well in ATL before being traded.
Eduardo Najera- lol why not.
forget Golden State, its now Cheapskate Warriors. =p

With Brand and Arenas out of the question, I’ll throw in another vote for Josh Smith, Emeka Okafor, and/or Andre Iguodala. Lesser options could be Corey Maggette or James Posey. As I said in another discussion, Brent Barry could serve as a decent short term stop-gap for minimal money. Pietrus and Barnes should be brought back if no one will take them/deal for them.

My Targets
I’ll break this down into categories. First will be the Stars. I’d love to land one of these guys, so here they are in order. BTW I’m also working under the assumption that we retain Monta and Andris. If we can I’d also like to bring back Buike.
STARS
1. E. Brand – I put Brand first because he is the type of player that has been so elusive for us in the past. He has a great low post game, a sweet mid-range jumper and plays good D. He would be the perfect compliment to AB inside. We could then get away with signing one of the lesser guards available and still have a really nice team. This would also allow us to trade any combination of Al, B. Wright and Randolph depending on what we could get in return. Plus it makes our division softer so that’s a bonus.
2. A Iguodala – Basically for the reasons Sleepy listed above, but just to reiterate I love his ability to handle the ball and pass well for a scoring guard. He would look great next to Monta with them sharing the playmaking responsibility.
3. J. Smith – I like Smith a lot… but at this point he would be my distant third pick. I just don’t think that the pieces would match up well. We would have a whole bunch of hybrid forwards and we would have to make some more moves to put together a team that makes sense on the court. But When you have chance at a guy like this you’ve got to take a shot.
4. D. Williams – Now this is a little misleading. First, he is not a free agent this year but if there is a chance in hell that we could pry him away next year I would put up with a year of really bad basketball to do it. He would be maybe the best partner for Monta. A true point who is big and can handle defending any SG in the league. I put this option at four just because it’s such a long-shot and a year away. If he were available now he would top my list.
Next is the complimentary guys. Here are my favorites
1. J. Childress – A real “do everything” guard. He would fill out a backcourt rotation quite nicely. He would also match well with Monta. He can defend, handle the ball and is incredibly efficient on the court. He would be a nice building block to have on the team for a few years.
2. J. Jones – Great shooter, and he can defend pretty well. Definitely a 3pt specialist on offense but he would be a nice young player to have come off the bench and space the floor.
3. D. West – I’m not a huge fan of this guy but I can imagine him playing pretty well with Monta. He is not a true PG but is closer than Monta and has good size for that position. He also has good range on his shot and though I haven’t really studied his D I’ve seen him play nice defense in the past. If we found an upgrade in the backcourt at a later date he would also work well coming off the bench as a combo guard.
4. C. Duhon/C. Arroyo – I’m lumping these guys together as guys who would be nice back-up point guards but may have to work as a one-year fix as starters if we whiff on all the better options and Monta is happier/better at the SG.
The next section is for the Gambler in me. These guys could still have some upside but would come really cheap.
1. S. Livingston – I know his health is a huge concern but if he can make it back (even if it takes another year) he would be ideal next to Monta. Great length, can guard the SG and is a true PG with great court vision. If we end up having some money to spend after we take care of the more important issues I would like to pick this guy up and see if he can rehab fully over the course of the next season. I’m thinking a smallish contract with a team option.
2. S Telfair – Obviously he hasn’t worked out so far but if we don’t make any major signings and end up in serious rebuilding mode I’d like to take a look at him and see if he can make it on the Dubs. You would think that he would thrive in the W’s offense.

my thoughts..
First post, but here goes..
Definitely the first free agent we should look to sign is J Smith. We have the cap room now, and we so don’t want Brand’s injury problems. Hopefully another team is going to throw some cash at Childress before the 76ers get to Smith (which we all know they inevitably will), but here’s hoping that if we throw the right wad of cash at J Smooth, he can be ours. Instant upgrade over Harrington.
Now that Harrington’s expendable.. he’s tradeable. A lot of posts have suggested trading him for Hinrich, but he sucks. Like Olympic Mike, i have worries about Livingston’s health, so I’m going to suggest that we sign Telfair. He’s cheap, and if he works out he could have a breakout year, if not, we have more than capable ballhandlers in S-Jax, Monta (who can switch between the roles if we end up limiting Telfair’s minutes), and the guy who we trade Harrington for….
It’s Artest. Some have suggested throwing Randolph in, doubt the Kings would bite. In fact, I doubt the Kings would bite unless we threw in next year’s first rounder, which we’re not willing to do. If someone here has a way in which we can trade Harrington for Artest and possibly taking on one of their bad contracts, without us losing too much.. I’m all for it. Hell we can even sign barnes on the cheap and include him in a sign and trade, he’ll be happy to go home. This is a trade we can definetly take more salary back on (thanks to the Beard), but as to whether the Kings or even Artest will want to come to the party remains to be seen.
Other than that, we definetly resign ‘Buike, Croshere as a cheap backup (minimum), saynoara to Barnes, Pietrus and O’Bryant.

This IS How We Get Brand
It seems like Elton Brand is thinking long and hard about the Warriors offer. The more I think about it, the more I feel like we have a real shot at getting Brand. Elton said he was inspired by the Celtics and wants to be in a similar situation, so if we want to get Brand we have to make a deal to entice him to come.
Remember the Celtics? KG rejected the trade at first and only decided to come to the Celtics after the Ray Allen deal. We have to make a move similar to the Ray Allen deal that gets Brand Excited about coming to the Dubs.
I know many of you will hate what I am about to propose, but I feel like we gotta do something along these lines just so we can reel in Elton Brand.
Move 1 to entice Brand to leave the Clips
Trade Al Harrington, The remainding rights of Adonal Foyle, and filler (Perovic?) to New Jersey for Vince Carter. Harrington comes off the books the summer of Lebron and Foyle comes off the end of this coming year so NJ would gladly unload Carter’s monster contract on us.
We get VC, a superstar to get Elton Brand motivated to coming to the Warriors.
Move 2 – Branden Wright + fillers (CJ Watson? Sign and trade POB?) to Sacramento for Ron Artest. I love Branden Wright. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s amazing, but we are talking about Elton Brand here. Just like the C’s, they had to give up some of their young studs (Al Jefferson) to get their superstars. This move would be the clincher at enticing Brand to come.
Once Brand signs, we fill out our roster with the remainder of whatever we got left capwise. I’m not sure if we could still add MAggette but we could go after someone like Keyon Dooling (our Rondo) and use the MLE for some wily vets. I’m sure many people would love to play on this squad for a shot at the ship.
Lineup
Monta Ellis/Keyon Dooling
Vince Carter/Azabuike/Belinelli
Ron Artest/Stephen Jackson
Elton Brand/Free Agent signee/Randolph/Hendrix
Andris Biedrins/Pat Burke (LOL!)

We have no remaining rights to Foyle. Our rights to do anything but give him a paycheck went away in the buyout. His contract is not a commodity anymore. We have nothing to trade.
Watson is not under contract. We cannot trade him either.
We have no Bird rights for the POB, so we’re limited to what we can offer him. He doesn’t hold much value.
There’s no reason a team would consider him an asset in a trade when they can sign him outright. There’s little reason to believe they’d consider him an asset in any event.
There’s not reason now that we need “cap filler” in trades. We’re under the cap. Salaries don’t have to match. Teams sending out players to us don’t want cap filler back.
I’m amazed at the people who love Wright, but still seem not to know that his name is Brandan, not Brandon, Branden or some other variant.

Roger Mason
is a combo guard that we should consider.
He has good size (6’5”), can shoot the 3 and defend 2’s. I think he can be had for around 3 mil too. Then we wouldn’t have to give up TMNT for a bad contract and a young unproven point man as so many are proposing that we do.

SHORT-TERM SOLUTIONS
Jason Williams: Would work well in Nellie’s offense. He’s a lot more under control than he was in his early days with Sac, but he’ll be 33 in November, making him an extremely short-term solution.
Jamaal Tinsley: If he gets bought out by Indiana, which may happen since he isn’t in their good graces, we could try to make the best out of Indiana’s rejects again. The Pacers are looking to either trade him or buy him out. We revived Stephen Jackson, maybe lightning can strike twice? Also younger than Williams (30).

Seriously though he might be worth having to teach Montay how to handle? and I’d definitely look into Livingstons health and see if he’s gonna recover, he might be a steal now? If they can manage to get either Williams or Tinsley, AND snag Shaun Livingston. That way, if Livingston still needs some time to rehab his knee, you have a veteran to start and the PG spot is in good hands. You can also hold onto CJ Watson for almost nothing as an insurance policy.

Future FAs
Timmy Kawakami wrote a blog entry over the weekend detailing the FAs for 2009 and 2010. I don’t know if we should “save” the cap space we have or not. The more I think about it, it seems more unlikely that we’ll be able to get Josh Smith/Iggy this year because they can resign with their current teams for more money (unless the Warriors go crazy and overpay). Furthermore, it is unlikely Elton Brand will sign with us (but we can still hope!). Still, it is equally as unlikely that we will get these big-name future FAs either.

Plan for the future.....
Whatever the warriors do, they should not tie there money into any veterans that are in their current prime ala Brand or Arenas. The Warriors have made enough moves towards building for the future, that it no longer seems plausible to build a winning team for next year. You cant fault them though, based on the talent of their youth. So more importantly for the Warriors, will be finding time to develop such players as Wright, Randolph, Belinelli, by throwing them into the fire by giving them countless minutes in pressure situations. This is generally the best way to get accustomed to the NBA game, I mean who needs practice, Allen Iverson sure doesnt. Hopefully they have strong enough personalities, that they wont get down on themselves and turn into another Kwame Brown. But I like our young nucleus, they seem to have the potential to become all-star caliber players a few years down the road. Thus, we should build a team that will gel in approximately 2-3 years. Therefore we should gamble on the likes on Iggi, Livingston, Pietrus, and I hate to say it but maybe even Kwame Brown, considering how low his value is, but he could be cancerous. These are the kind of guys that I want on my team next year, given a reasonable amount of playing time to show what their worth. Our payroll should be manageable, and hopefully in a few yrs we will be able to make decisions on which one of these youngsters will form our core nucleaus, and hopefully still have enough money to sign veterans that can play vital roles in winning ball games. (Ala Fisher/Posey/Pj Brown). The one thing I do know is that Monta is the player I want to build around. I want him to get the most shots on the team because he shoots a high enough % to carry that responsiblity, but he is not a PG. Hes not really tall enough to guard twos, but he is quick enough to guard the one. So hopefully the Warriors are smart enough to bring in a point guard that is tall enough to guard the two with a pass first mentality (Livingston) , or they bring in a two guard that is capable of bringing up the ball and setting up other players (Iggy). Now that would be sick…........
PG: Livingston (if he can play at 80% of what his potential was)/ Monta
SG: Monta / Iggi/ Belinelli
SF: Randolph/ Pietrus
PF: Wright
C: Biedrins/ K.Brown (I hate him, but hes the #1 pick, can he really suck that bad. I think he just needs to strap on the nutz, and play with a little heart)
That team has the potential to compete for the western conference in a few years if everyone pans out, which is kind of a reach, but what we have to hope for as a Warrior fan. The outside shooting is truly suspect outside of Belinelli (streaky), but I think Monta will eventually extend his range, and it also looks as if Randolph will be capable of shooting the 3 ball. If not, we can always sign a few specialists. With my future roster, you can imagine the Warriors establishing an identity as a fast pace team, that attacks the rim and the glass offensively, settling for high percentage shots. Although thin in weight up front, these 3 athletically lean lefties will form a formidable defensive tandem with their off-ball prowless. This will lead to tons of helpside D, and sick swats that lead to fast break opportunities. All in all, it is my idealistic style of basketball that I would love to see the Warriors veer towards. Who wouldn’t want to see that brand of ball as a fan.
by Yukmouth on Jul 8, 2008 1:54 AM PDT 0 recs
i like...
i like this potential roster. although i would love to have a big name star like brand here, i believe throwing 5 or 6 years at him is too much. he will be in his mid 30s by the end of his contract and will be making tons of money while being on the downside of his career.
i love the idea of going after shaun livingston—as i continue to say in almost every post. he has ideal size and skillset for playing with the warriors style (hopefully the style stays post-nelson) and roster
also, i am intrigued by kwame brown as well. it maybe that i just have some strange obsession with young or pseudo-young players with raw and physical skills and high potential (see deandre jordan). if he gets motivated at all, he could be a “beast”—not really, but at least a serviceable big body that we don’t have at this point.
as for iguodala—i am mixed about him. i really like him as a player and his skillset fit well with the team. but it would be awfully hard to get him. if we do, he would definitely line up at SF on this future team, unless livingstona and randolph become an absolute monsters. even then, i it would be hard to keep iggy on the bench.
i would really love to go young and throw these guys into the fire to develop them and see what they can do (that is if we don’t do that NJ trade for carter & others). although we would probably lose a lot of games, we have the consolation of a potentially high draft pick. (its like the 90s all over again!—except i think it would be more fun to watch because the players we have actually have potential to be good. not like hoping vonteego cummings develops into something. plus monta and potentially iggy would be good enough to keep this team respectable)

Agree w/ earlier poster...
Who thought GS should pursue Josh Smith. I think he’s the ideal PF in an uptempo system. His rebounding and shot blocking alone would be a huge upgrade over Harrington, not to mention he’s got a decent handle and an improving jumper. I think his biggest contribution would be as a weakside defender. Aside from Jack, GS doesn’t have many strong perimeter defenders, and that figures to only get worse if Belinelli gets more burn…But with a stud shotblocker protecting the rim, a lot of those deficiencies are masked.
How many times in the Utah series did BD, Jack or Monta beat their man only to be denied at the rim by Kirilenko? I think Smith could have that kind of an impact defensively.
My dream offseason would go something like:
1. Pry Josh Smith away from Atlanta
2. Trade Harrington for Hinrich
3. Sign Livingston
4. Re-Sign Buke
So, my 2009 line up would look something like:
PG: Hinrich/Livingston/Watson
SG: Monta/Belinelli
SF: Jack/Buke/Randolph
PF: Smith/Wright/Hendrix
C: Biedrins
This a VERY young team, maybe too young, but they’d be exciting and pretty scary in a few years if guys like Wright and Randolph develop into studs. This team is still a little light (to say the least), maybe a Francisco Elson type (energy/hustle/banger/etc) would be a nice piece to add as a 12th man.
You may run like Hayes. but you hit like sh**!
