The Josh Smith movement?
He's a young, long, athletic shot blocker who would put up 20/10 as our starting PF (put up 17/8 last season as ATL's SF). His scoring has increased every year he's played.
Basically, he's sort of what the W's hope BWright could be someday. Does this make BWright redundant? Maybe. Could BWright be a cheaper, homegrown, potentially better substitute? Maybe. Could they both play simultaneous super SF/PF spots? Maybe.
But, if Philly is really going after him w/ only $11 M (or a few more if they trade someone for a pick), seems like we could easily swoop in with a $13-14 M per offer and have our already dependable rebounding, shot blocking PF of the future locked up for the foreseeable future. Plus, we would still have BWright and Randolph to develop into who knows what. PLUS, we would still have some cap room, $6-7 M.
Could this be an overpaying, knee jerk reaction? Maybe.
Obviously, I don't know what I think, do you?

this would be great
the only downside to Smith’s game is that hes got a low FG%. but i dont think hes gonna need to shoot as much if hes on the warriors…other than that, hes one of the best shot blockers and rebounders in the game. extremely athletic. just a beast.

tough call
I love J-smoov’s game, but 13-14 mil per is a lot for a guy with a questionable attitude.

all about J smith
We neeed to play some Defense some day in the near future, and Josh Smith is exactly what the doctor ordered. Yes his shooting is weak, but he is a great slasher on the O side and with Monta being our all mighty creator, it would be no problem for Josh to drop 20 a game in our system. Josh is the only guy I am praying the warriors somehow nab this offseason, we won’t be a championship team, maybe not a playoff team, but we will take a step in grabbing a future star and we will get some great entertainment cause Josh can throw it down.

Josh played a whole lot of PF last year. Well, he and Marvin Williams played twin tweener forwards. And he didn’t have a FG% nearly what you’d want in a PF, or even a SF. I like his shooting stroke, but his shot selection isn’t that keen. He gets to the line a bunch though so it’s not about avoiding contact. A better coach may be able to change him. Hell, Donyell went from terrible to leading the league when he moved from GS to Utah, so it’s not a guarantee that he’ll always shoot like he does. The rest of his game is there.
The downside is that ATL will match any reasonable offer, or at least that’s what they said. The sort of deal that would scare them out of matching wouldn’t be the sort of gamble I think we should make. It would invest heavily in a guy who hasn’t reached the sort of level you need to be at to justify that money.

we'll have to see
It’s hard to know what exactly they would or wouldn’t match. They said they would match anything but that’s not the most dependable ownership group. All in all, I think they probably would match. As Smith’s flirtation w/ Philly heads in one direction or another pretty soon, I imagine we’ll know more about ATL’s limits.

Putting in an offer is not without costs. If there’s a real chance to land Brand, the Warriors have to look at that first because it can’t be matched if Brand wants to come here. An offer to a RFA ties up your cap space until the other team matches. They have a week to decide and ALWAYS take that week, even if everyone in the world knows they will. It’s a way of discouraging teams from setting the price for your RFAs. That week would be a week that we can’t make offers on anyone else, that we’d be stuck working as if he was on board vis a vis the cap. It’s a week to watch other teams make offers when we can’t.
Yeah, you could look at other FAs and say, if Smith doesn’t work out, we’d like you to be our backup date. That tends to put off guys, knowing that they’re a fallback position.
One thing the Warriors don’t want to do is get into a pissing match with the other teams with cap room, especially a match that has a low chance for success. We piss off Philly by butting into a game that we’re unlikely to win and they could offer Monta some money. We’d match, but we’d lose all the cap room we are going to have. We’d be out of the FA game. That’s not something we want to do for the low chance that TWO other teams decide our offer for Smith is higher than they want to go.

i'm in
for putting in a high bid for josh smith. I think his defense on PFs in the Western Conference would be something that BW will take years to develop (or may never develop). BW just isnt strong enough to guard PFs like Duncan or Amare.

J-smooth, crittenton and livingston, for same or less than Baron???
I think most of us would agree that would be fun to watch and win a bunch of games, maybe Playoffs, so essentially Baron leaving us gives us that kind of opportunity, or childress in place of Smith and add another quality fringe player….
by warriorbum on Jul 3, 2008 7:19 AM PDT 0 recs
All in...
hes 22 and already proven a name for himself, J-smooth. With him in our lineup, we’d be ridiculously big and athletic. Think of a lineup consisting of:
Andris/ Wright or Al/ Smith/ Jackson/ Monta
a line like that would be jaw dropping to me.
forget Golden State, its now Cheapskate Warriors. =p

Again, I think if we are going to keep Mr. Wright
don’t get $mith
