Suns fan here; I haven't watched too much of Barnes aside from the amazing run during 07 Playoffs. What can you guys tell me about him? What's he like on defense? Any info you guys could contribute would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.

I liked his energy!

He got a rough time here, with people on his case, but personally I think considering what he went through last year, he will be solid for you. I am sad to see him leave. Give me a Hard Worker over some “preening rapping gob shite” anyday, and Barnes was a hard worker.

Just hope he doesnt have to answer Shaq’s question, “How does my ass taste!”

Frickin fat lump!

It's about heart, It's about fight, It's about being a Warrior!

3's maybe

he will make one and then airball the next, but the best thing about him is late in games like 1 second left no timeouts down by 1,2, or 3. he will chuck that basketball far and accurately

by Dub4lif3 on Jul 20, 2008 10:55 PM PDT   0 recs

you guys are forgetting his trademarks

baseball inbound passes and random flagrant fouls.

good get for the minimum though.

my 2 cents

I feel that he is a solid addition to the suns line up.

He does all the little things that don’t necessarily show up on the stat lines.

talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish

Barnes

He had an awesome playoffs against Dallas and got a 3 mil K for it. He had a tough year last year. His Mom passed away. He wasn’t really the same player except occasionally. When he’s right though he’s a great energy player. He’s athletic and tough, former high school wide receiver. He plays with a lot of heart and i wish him the best. I think he’ll fit in with Suns, he plays with a lot of aggression which they kind of lacked last year. Your 06-07 squad was awesome and should have won it all. F the spurs

+1

When on he is a quite effective player that can leave his mark on a game with solid d, passing, hitting some 3’s, hustle. When he is off he is one of the worst players in the nba.

He crapped out on us last year...

The only reason he got the minutes he got was because he was one of Nelly’s fav. The bottom line is, the guy didn’t do anything for us at all. i don’t remember him hitting a big shot or getting a key rebound at all. All I remember is him coming in at the end of the 2nd quarter to give a starter a breather, and even, in that, limited action he found a way to pick up a few fouls. His shot selection and lack of basketball IQ probably cost us a couple of games, but, I put that on the coach for putting him in there. All and all, I liked the player, and I think a lot of what he went through last year was due to the loss of his mom. I didn’t want us to resign, but, Im genuinely happy the guy got a job. It’s a low rish, high reward situation for the Suns he goes back to form.

The most important thing is...

He drives the ladies crazy, so there will be more ladies at the games. Sucks for us though, no Alba, and a lot fewer female fans.

Barney Boy!

Honest Opinion:

Barns did great in 07, because he knew his place and was able to fit in, his fall from grace this year was not his fault, it was Mr. Nellie‘s, he made him a CO Captain and it threw his game off, he tried to do more than what he was capable of doing, he thought he was a star=) that was all that was wrong with Mr.da Tatoo Barnes, if he can fall back into being a role player again he will have another outstanding year, you tell em I said so ;=

Forrest da Grump !

Ps, Another blunder by da Don =)

by ForestGrump on Jul 21, 2008 12:34 AM PDT   0 recs

you know

matt barnes was a really special player. you know he just tried to you know give the team everything he had you know and he definitely has one of the you know best personalities in the game you know. you know his three point shooting will be missed you know but hopefully randolph and you know hendrix will you know develop into you know players

The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and the chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby.

by Mike Hawk on Jul 21, 2008 12:43 AM PDT   0 recs

When he goes cold, he goes way cold.

You will also see some of the worst flagrant fouls from him.
He was loved by alot of fans. But really hasnt done anything besides in the playoffs and right before them. The year ebfore last.
All last year he was bad, even before his mom had passed. The year he shined he was so bad at times earlier that season. Don Nelson made the comment, he hasnt hit a brick wall, he has hit the whole building.
I wouldnt be suprised if he doesnt make it out of camp with the suns.

by The Golden One on Jul 21, 2008 12:50 AM PDT   0 recs

All Or Nothing

Barnes is an all or nothing type of player which is perfect for Nellie’s frantic style. His full court passes will be perfect on one play, then sail into the third row the next. With D’Antoni gone, I don’t think there’s much PT for him. New Suns coach Terry Porter might slow down the action a bit, since leaving the half-court set Pistons. Barnes will not replace The Matrix, that’s for sure…

by SuperFly on Jul 21, 2008 1:11 AM PDT   0 recs

bittersweet

i think that matt barnes is a guy that all warriors fans have a little bit of a soft spot for. like some said, he epitomized the warriors run to the playoffs in 07 and the frantic, fast paced, in your face, we can do anything, style of play. i mean, he got a “we believe” tatt!!

but in a purely basketball sense, it was not wise to bring him back for another year. he’s a fun guy to have around, but not too great of a basketball player, because of his ups and rock bottom downs. if barnes is able to harness his game a little bit more and even become mildly consistent, then he will and should have a solid spot in any team’s bench. at 1.2 mil, it seems that the suns took a decent gamble, but only time will tell if it pays off. i am very happy for matt barnes though; it will tough to see him play the dubz throughout the year.

by Run Dubz on Jul 21, 2008 3:06 AM PDT   0 recs

BARNES IS THE BEST IN THE LEAGUE

at the quick full-court baseball inbounds pass off of a made basket. Too bad the Suns don’t run anymore.

I’m really happy for Barnes. I was afraid he might be out of the league. He will always have a special place in my heart for the 2007 season. GOOD LUCK BARNSEY BOY!!!!

It's almost like the Warriors have 6 guys out there... they always have a guy open! - Jon Barry commentating game 3 last year

by gsw4life on Jul 21, 2008 7:38 AM PDT   0 recs

Matt Barnes ...

is a great hustle player, a hit or miss type of guy. Example – when he shoots tri-fectors it’s eitheir swoosh or WAY OFF !!! In essence, a good energy player to have off the bench.

It's official when its on the Suns website...

http://www.nba.com/suns/

He’s getting the Veterans minimum too- (not bad)

by Tony.psd on Jul 21, 2008 9:18 AM PDT   0 recs

Kind of irritating that

they are letting Barnes and Buike, 2 great roleplayers, go for pennies. Sure Barnes had a bad year, but he has a great possibility of bouncing back strong after an offseason to contemplate personal stuff. If a move is not made for another player and we go on $9mil under the cap…..oh wait Turiaf. Yeah, there’s a jewel.

We are the future of basketball. Dub Love.

Azubuike isn’t gone yet.

by jae on Jul 21, 2008 9:57 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

i remember at most games i went to the fans yelled “sit down barnes!” cause he usually tried too much and turned the ball over…but true he had that inbounds pass to monta that initiated the one man fast break.

Barnes

good luck in the valley of the Sun. Thanks for the run.

by bayareaballa on Jul 21, 2008 10:06 AM PDT   0 recs

He'll be good

He’s a purely system player, and the Suns system is a little similar to us. So I think he will fir in nicely, avg about 6 points and 5 boards a game. He is a very aggresive defender, picks up lots of fouls, but no cheapies either. Glad he found a home other than the NFL.

Put a little mustard on it

by The Barnes Supremacy on Jul 21, 2008 11:44 AM PDT   0 recs

The Suns got a steal

Barnes for the minimum, which is like $1.2M, is a steal. He is a solid backup at the SF and can even play some PF. Good rebounder, capable ball handler, and high energy! He pushes the ball up the court. The Suns will be very happy to have him.

This is one loss that hurts the most. With BD’s money we signed Maggette, Turiaf, and have $4M to grab a PG, so ultimately I’m ok with that. Pietrus leaving for $5M/yr is a joke, and Azubuike signing for $3M/year is way too much as well. Barnes is a better player than either of those two guys, so to bring him back for $1M is a no-brainer for me. Are we expecting Randolph to be ready-to-go backup SF? I just don’t see it. I would have loved to see a lineup of Ellis-Jackson-Maggette-Barnes-Turiaf in the game. The handling and passing would have been fun. But, no.

by warriordrp on Jul 21, 2008 11:45 AM PDT   0 recs

He is a solid player, he will add to the suns linup pretty well. He has a good inbound arm and can find anyone anywere with good time. He has a decent three point shot and is good under pressure.

by THEwarriorfan on Jul 21, 2008 1:18 PM PDT   0 recs

no one can do the full (or near full court) baseball pass better.

by dannyschmanny on Jul 21, 2008 1:31 PM PDT   0 recs

After signing him for $3.5 the previous year, you would think an offer of the veteran’s minimum would be easy. Somebody must have really soured on his game

by barrance on Jul 21, 2008 2:16 PM PDT   0 recs

Yeah ,After his contributions two years ago he woulda been a good gamble for the minimum. I’d much rather have Barnes and KaBuki on the bench than Belinelli, they are both tougher, have given us some good minutes and have playoff experience. We are a much better looking team with those two.

have fun with Barnes.

by Ali luvs monta on Jul 21, 2008 2:34 PM PDT   0 recs

The next time you get out on a break watch his one armed full court pass, it is tremendous.

And the next time a three point shooter has a ball behind the line you better hope he isn’t close, or it will be a foul. Everytime. He is without a doubt the worst closer outer in the league.

It all depends on his desire. If he is hungry, he is extremely valuable.

by belilaugh on Jul 21, 2008 3:36 PM PDT   0 recs

as long as

he doesnt try to do too much and his mind is in the game, he we will be an effective 6th man for the suns.

warriors dont fish they hunt!

hahaha

6th man is laughable… for the suns hahah woah there buddy. try the 10th or 11th man.
