Josh Childress to Greece for $6.33 mil/yr

He's currently being offered, and considering, a 3 year deal @ $20 mil.  Ok... now before I get into my rant... let's look at this guy's numbers (last year's and his career)

Last year:  12 ppg, 5 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1 spg, 1.3 to's, 57% fg, 80% ft @ 30 mpg
Career:  11 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 2 apg, 1 spg, 1.4 to's, 52% fg, 80% ft @ 31 mpg

Beyond these numbers, he was a very high basketball IQ player who predominately made the correct decision to put his team in a winning situation.  He doesn't chuck up the three very much (less than one attempt per game @ 36% over his career) but he is a very good ball handler with good defensive instincts and a fro like no other's today.  Now I know that the tax situation do factor into this equation, so let's just say he's getting the equivalent of $7.5 mil/yr (taxes are a bitc....), do you think that he would be worth a 3 year contract @ $8 mil/yr?  I certainly think that he would fit in with the Warriors at the SF spot fairly well.  Now whether the Hawks would match or not would be a moot point, because our chance has passed... and we all know what Maggette can do.

Now... the question is would you rather see Maggette get his 5 yr $50 mil deal or see Childress get a 3 yr $25 mil deal (just rounding up)?

Its not even close

Maggs has skills, Josh is a hustle player and thats it. I conisder Childress a illte more talented than Matt Barnes. Hell I would just as sson have AZIbuike for 3M/per. His stas per/minute ar ebetter than Childress. Not opinion,, just fact.

Total Agreement

A 6 Man at best, sorry buddy the trend of Americans going to European are all for a reason: they are all “talents” that think their game is better than the money that is being offered. Childress is no exception, and $8 mil a year is a joke. I can find 20 guys who, at $8 mil a year, are light years ahead of this guy

BTW some are worried that Europe is going to start stealing American talent. When we start to see guys like Mayo or Beasley chose Europe over America, then we can talk.

I’ve been less down on the Maggette signing than most, but I’d definitely rather have had Childress for half the money.

skills are non comparison

like the subject says—skills are a non comparison: maggette is a much much better player and there is no argument.

the reason i voted for childress is because his contract is much smaller and shorter. in all honesty, if there was an option to have neither, i would take that option. i think we overpaid for maggette (we probably had to if we wanted him) and i don’t think he fits our team very well. childress is a smooth athlete, but also not worth 8 million a year.

if i had to have one, i would take childress at 3 yrs/25mil just because of the smaller size of the contract (both in terms of years and money) and i dont think he is as”non-skilled” as others seem to think. however, ideally, i wouldn’t want either of them. i think both are paid way too much (and maggette for too long)

agree

a bit high salary for childress, too many years for maggette, and a slightly inflated per year salary.

by tkired on Jul 22, 2008 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

True... I was thinking about putting neither

There is really no comparison as to who is the better offensive option… but we have plenty of offensive options on this team in my opinion. That’s why I believe that Childress would be a better fit in this system, as he is a better defender and seemingly has a higher basketball IQ. That and his enticingly lower price tag… It all doesn’t really matter because we have Maggette and can’t turn back time. Just a random brain fart if anything.

one more thing to consider

euro season is not 82 games

-it’s about 40 – 50 games (depends of championships and cups where team is participating ) less games for more money

build a team & destroy the roof

by Lat We N Trash on Jul 22, 2008 1:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

also

more pressure, because of the amount of tournaments, cups, etc. Many more elimination games. Not that thisaffects salary, just sayin.

by tkired on Jul 22, 2008 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I never realized that for greek leagues...

Euro ball is definately different. I only get to see those games when I travel overseas.

usually

euro team is participating in national championship and some cup tournament (ULEB eurocup, ULEBcup, FIBAcup) -Euro basketball is pretty different (i would say that’s not even what lot of NBA fans understand as basketball) -but soon (after couple years) it will change -because FIBA is about to change rules to more similar NBA -3pt line and defensive 3 seconds

build a team & destroy the roof

by Lat We N Trash on Jul 22, 2008 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

and the 3 pt line

is basically a lay-up for nba players

toss up

for me. im not sure who i would rather have. i think childress is more worth the money, but maggette is the better player.

then again, ive been a josh childress fan since his days at stanford. you really need to see the kid play basketball to appreciate him as a player. he’s one of those guys whose stats dont really tell the whole story. he’s a smart player who will never hurt your team. i have no evidence to back this up, but he strikes me as the guy who will consistently get better, out of hard work and simple desire. i would be sad to see him leave the nba, only because i really enjoy watching him play.

by Run Dubz on Jul 22, 2008 2:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

they will be paying him in Euros

which is increasing in value against the dollar. That 8 mil could turn into 10 when he returns to the states.

by misterjennings on Jul 22, 2008 2:24 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Good point

He is getting paid in Euros which are worth quite a bit more than Dollars right now and look as though they will continue to grow in value over the Dollar. When you consider in the amount of tax that he would have to pay if he played in the US, it makes it an even better idea for him to go to Europe to play. I’m not sure how he would be taxed if he plays in Greece but my guess is he would be paying less taxes than he would here.

by NBA on Jul 22, 2008 3:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I doubt that he saves on taxes. In general, European countries have greater personal tax burdens. The flip side is that they tend to actually get something for the tax dollars, like reasonable public transportation systems and guarantees of health insurance.

by jae on Jul 22, 2008 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

actually

in Europe, clubs supposedly pay for the players taxes as well as the player’s agent fees. So Childress’s 3 yr 20 mill contract is net instead of the gross figure associated w/ NBA contracts.

Which means we have nothing to offer, since our MLE is history for this season.

Good

I remember J Chill as a Warrior Killer. Now if they can also snatch up Paul Millsap and Steve Blake we’d make the playoffs.

Put a little mustard on it

I wouldn't be able to stand watching Josh Childress shoot free throws for 82 games...

His freethrow shooting form is hideous! Its hard enough watching Beans at the charity stripe!!! haha

It's official now

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3501488

All it says is that he signed a 3 year contract with Olympiakos of Greece.

The NBA is going to have to look at their salary cap rules. To me, it’s unacceptable that they lose a decent player that wanted to play in the NBA simply because the salary cap rules allow a foreign team to offer more money than any NBA team can. The same could really be said about some of the good foreign players that are staying overseas like Tiago Splitter. The NBA should be doing everything possible to make sure that they have all of the best players in the world.

It's almost like the Warriors have 6 guys out there... they always have a guy open! - Jon Barry commentating game 3 last year

The NBA needs to be a viable business

They’re in the business of making money, just like the rest of us. They have to evaluate the financial ramifications of players leaving for more $$ overseas. We live in the world, and there’s a lot more money available internationally than in the United States. The NBA can’t just “not accept losing their players”. There’s no way around that.

I suspect that this means Childress wanted out of ATL. They made noise that they were going to match the offers for him, which were likely no more than MLE since teams with more to offer weren’t going to burn it on him. They retain his RFA rights for 2 years. A three year contract means he’ll be ready to come back to the NBA while still in his prime as an unrestricted FA.

And so he takes a three year deal which means the restricted part of his free agency goes away. Such is life. Revising the rules to keep a player or two is a reactionary, uh, reaction. It’s also not in the NBA’s power to unilaterally change the cap rules. It’s a product of the collective bargaining agreement. All three words are important. It’s an agreement negotiated with compromises. The players would love to have no cap, to allow bidding to go up and up and up. The owners have fought for a cap to prevent exactly that.

It is not the birthright of the NBA to have any player that it wants, to be able to outbid the rest of the world. The NBA is doing what is possible to be a viable business in the entertainment sector.

The BEST option is JC's

- he has the option to opt out of his contract at the end of each season!
