The Warriors' future is looking BRIGHT

Well well... we are in the midst of a complete overhaul of talent.  The only players remaining from our famed playoff team are Monta Ellis, Andris Biedrins, Stephen Jackson and Al Harrington... and that was only 14 months ago.  To say things are different is an understatement.  Fortunately, we have a plethora of young talent to take us into the new decade.

Star-divide

First things first is our core, which consists of Monta, Wright, Randolph, Maggette & Andris.  Think about it for a second... these players (along with Williams, Belinelli, Azubuike & Turiaf) are guaranteed to be here after next season.  That will be at least three seasons of growing together and becoming accustomed to each other’s game.  We have a great young group of players on this team.  Coaching will be the main variable, as Nellie is seemingly undecided about whether he will return after this season.

Stephen Jackson and Al Harrington are fairly good veterans who are knowledgeable enough to hold things down and keep things together, but unfortunately, they are people who I don't really expect to be here after next season.  I would love to see Jackson stay, but outside of a complete explosion where we become title contenders within the next two seasons, he really doesn't have any incentive to stay.  Harrington is probably going to be leaving for greener grass, which may happen sooner as his trade value is expected to increase next season, as he is someone who can score from the 3 or 4 position with an expiring contract.  By then, some of our youngins should be veterans themselves while the W’s sign others vets to fill in the roster.

Putting together a depth chart for next couple of seasons is pretty easy (as Nellie already named his starters):
PG:  Ellis, Williams, Watson
SG:  Jackson, Belinelli, Azubuike
SF:  Maggette, Randolph
PF: Harrington, Wright, Hendrix
C:   Biedrins, Turiaf, Perovic
So far that's a 14-man team, leaving one roster spot open.  Penciling in Perovic to be part of the rotational injured list and Hendrix to join him or go to the D-League, we have a solid 12-player rotation to suit up barring any injuries.

Now the first unit should be solid, with the exception of the power forward spot.  Nelson has stated that Harrington should be the starter, but with Wright adding a mid-range jumper to his game, it would be interesting to see Wright in the starting line-up.  Unfortunately, with Ellis & Maggette out on the floor at the same time (both of whom are slashers who tend to drive and draw fouls), the Warriors need another player with Jackson to stretch the floor, which is what Harrington can currently do with his three-point range.  This of course makes our rebounding a little suspect, but what’s a Warrior team w/o weak rebounding right?  (That was a joke…).  Should Wright be able to build up a reliable mid-range jumper, I would be all for placing him into the starting line, which would strengthen the rebounding of our first unit while leaving Harrington to come off the bench as the offensive minded scoring option in the second unit.

The bright side to this is our 2nd unit, which has a fairly good rebounding and weak side blocking base in Wright & Turiaf.  Hopefully, Randolph will grow into the type of player he was hyped up to be before the draft (a talented Lamar Odom-type player) a lot sooner than he was slated to get there.  We already know that Azubuike is a pretty good scoring option off the bench, and if Belinelli can find his jumper, it only makes the second unit that much more valuable.  Obviously, its not going to be like this forever, as the second unit is basically a stepping stone for the new youngsters to step up, build their game through experience and hard work and get to the starting line-up.

Of course, this is all leading to the future, so we can project our starting line-up & depth chart post Jax & TMNH:
PG:  Ellis, Williams
SG:  Maggette, Belinelli,
SF:  Randolph, Azubuike
PF:  Wright, Hendrix,
C:   Biedrins, Turiaf
Baring any trades or the declining of the team-options on Williams, Belinelli, Randolph, Wright & Hendrix (the first four of which looks like they will be mainstays anyways), this is a fair assessment of our base team for the 2010-2011 season.  Sprinkle in a couple of rookies and a couple of veteran FA signings, and I have faith that this team could grow to be a nice fixture in the playoff picture.

Now I know, I know… how can this team be a playoff type of team?  First off, that starting line-up wouldn’t have any gunslingers from the three pt line, meaning we wont have any quick threes running down the court.  Secondly, that starting unit already as two 20+ PPG scorers in Maggette & Ellis who rebound very well from the guard spots, a big 2nd ball handler in Randolph (should he continue to improve) and two excellent rebounders and adequate shot blockers in Wright & Biedrins.  Off the bench would be Belinelli and another 3 pt shooter (TBA via FA) to switch the tempo of the game with Williams serving as primary ball-handler and Turiaf in the same role as the high-energy defender.  This team would also have the ability to go small by taking out either Beans or Wright and placing Williams at the point, moving everyone down one spot.

I, for one, am extremely excited for the future of this team.  This is the youngest team we’ve had since the Arenas, Richardson, Jamison, Murphy & Foyle w/ Dunleavy days with one main difference; this team actually has the chance to grow together and build chemistry.  The Arenas/Richardson/Jamison combo only had 2 years together… one year where Arenas finally got the starting nod toward the end of the season over Larry Hughes and one year where they were able to all play together.  We all remember the potential, and we all remember the heartbreak afterwards when Arenas said Cohen didn’t look him in the eye and Mullin pulled the trigger to move Jamison and start all over with J-Rich/Dunleavy & Murphy as the core.  Our current core has at least three years to play together before contracts are up for Wright & Belinelli.  Assuming that they’ll be resigned, this team could potentially play together a few years beyond that.  It’s a hell of a lot better and more fun to watch than putting our playoff hopes in the hands of Coles, Jackson, Marshall, Weatherspoon & Dampier.

yah, it looks

bright in the lottery. we have a chance for the 1st pick with this line up of young guys and over paid unproven free agent signings.

by ADOBO on Jul 24, 2008 8:50 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

LETS SEE....

first of all, you dont have to be in last place to win the lotto. give me a team these past few years that won the lotto and at the same time had the worst record. this year we had the bulls win it and they almost made the playoffs. anyways, here are a few teams that are better than the warriors now that was in this years lotto:

chicago
miami
portland
clippers
charlotte
milwaukee

Azubuike

We should re-sign Azubuike to backup SF. As smooth as Anthony Randolph looks in Summer League, he’s most likely not going to be ready for the NBA this season.

by YaHeard on Jul 23, 2008 11:58 AM PDT   0 recs

I'm not saying he's completely ready for the season...

I’m just saying who better to learn the role from than Stephen Jackson, a player with a similar skill set. It would be better to give the playing time w/ the 2nd unit to Randolph than to keep him on the bench.

by Mr. Monday Night on Jul 23, 2008 12:30 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Good points

I agree as well – I actually think Evans is a bit of insurance if Bellinelli doesn’t work out. He can play the 2 or the 3.
Coaching will be key – our second unit is pretty solid so I hope they get a lot of playing time – not at the same time but mixed with the starters. If that happens, when you consider the youth and athleticism of the team – they will be running teams out of the bulding all year long. Prediction – top 5 offense in the league, one of the bottom 3 on defense. Go Nellie ball!

"nba ready" talk

With Don Nelson feeding people with the “he’s not NBA ready yet” talk when referring to the young guys, i don’t always buy that. I believe Nellie’s faith in rooks and sophs are very shaky and skeptical at best. I refuse to believe rooks or other youngins can’t contribute at this level. I would like to at least give more quality minutes to the young pups until they play their way to the end of the bench.

by spacedout on Jul 23, 2008 2:00 PM PDT   0 recs

more nelson misunderstanding

i find it fascinating that people here keep throwing nelson’s "he’s not NBA ready yet" as skeptical and not believing in rooks. nba game is very physical and it demands right conditioning. most players first coming into the league regardless if they come from college or euro are not conditioned enough to play 82 games with so much travel. they need to be able to withstand physical challenges that nba season poses.
lack of conditioning is the main reason of injuries in sports. rookie decision making is only part of the problem nelson has with players.

by farid on Jul 23, 2008 5:22 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

spend time watching a rookie play team defense

they are usually horrible at it.

in terms of NBA body, you just need to look at which of the highschoolers were successful (offensively) in their rookie years vs which struggled (without counting flops like gerald green where body size had nothing to do w/ his struggles). i.e. lebron, amare, howard vs kobe, mcgrady, rashard, chandler

you even see it in college players. part of the reason Landry was so successful this past year is that his body is able to bang w/ veteran NBA guys.. in terms of basketball, the NBA is really physical. there’s a lot of fouling that overseas players and HS/college kids just aren’t used to. if the refs called everything it’d be like worse than SL w/ what seemingly is a foul every 5 seconds.

glass half full

nice elucidation of the roster – what we will desperately need is a coach who can develop this group once Nelson steps down – a Flip Sauders type coach who is experienced and is (currently) available perhaps?

speaking for myself, patience will be needed since this roster is not a playoff-quality one in the WC and so many of us thirst for another shot in the second season

by hardcore on Jul 23, 2008 3:37 PM PDT   0 recs

Well the WC is slowing down (somewhat)

The Clippers definitely took a step back with Brand going to the 76ers, and Phx/Dal is imploding by the minute. We can conceivably be back in the playoff hunt w/in the next 2 seasons.

by Mr. Monday Night on Jul 23, 2008 7:01 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

we need don nelson to trust the rooks

at least a little bit, to ensure this cohesive development that you refer to. give em a chance in games to preserve a small lead. we may regret it, but its a potentially very high reward decision (ie discover a star in BW/AR)

by Run Dubz on Jul 23, 2008 3:59 PM PDT   0 recs

Nelson

is chasing a record that will require around 50 wins, so until he gets it or until we are FULLY committed to developing youth and letting Nelson sail off into the Maui sunset, we should not expect him to develop the young’ns in lieu of trying to win every regular season game he can … GSW needs to make a choice in direction … or wait another year (this year and next?) for him to get past Lenny Wilkens

by hardcore on Jul 23, 2008 6:50 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

two years

It will take him two years, or atleast part of a second season. It’s 52 wins to tie and 53 wins for the title.

by Psion on Jul 24, 2008 11:14 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It’s 52 wins to tie and 53 wins for the title.

Nelson must be planning to stay one more year after this season or he’d probably paid Boom to stay and increase the odds of 53 wins?

Anthony Morrow

I really think they should give him a shot. No pun intended. His shooting percentages in the Summer leagues have been insane.

Mullin didn’t gain control until 2004; he had nothing to do with Jamison shipping out.

Other than that, I really like this attitude towards our current lineup. I think it’s really just a matter of everyone’s favorite players suddenly disappearing over the past year (especially in the past few weeks) that has caused such a shock reaction to recent team activity.

This Warriors team is definitely good enough to make the playoffs as well as some noise. It’s just a matter of everyone staying healthy, continuing to develop, and the conference not experiencing another freak playoff race where 9 teams remain within 5 games of each other. And it would really help that we could keep a roster together for more than two years and give players more of a chance to build chemistry; we’ve had good lineups getting broken up prematurely way too many times.

by jeppalepala on Jul 23, 2008 10:30 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

All news reports stated that Mullin had his fingerprints on the Jamison trade...

St. Jean was on his way out the door and Mullin (as the then “Special Assistant”) basically pushed for the trade himself, although St. Jean was the official head of the team.

Josh Childress

signs a contract to play overseas. Marvin Williams will probably play SF and I don’t see Atlanta paying big money to keep Josh Smith. I would loooooooove to see JSmoove hold down the 4 spot for the Warriors. What do think about trading Harrington and Wright for Smith? Does this line up entice you?

Warriors

PG Ellis – Williams

SG Jackson – Belinelli

SF Maggette – Evans

PF Smith – Randolph – Hendrix

C Biedrins – Turiaf – Kosta

Hawks

PG Bibby – Claxton

SG Johnson

SF Williams – Harrington

PF Horford – Wright

C Pachulia

by gambinofam on Jul 23, 2008 11:12 PM PDT   0 recs

There's no way Atlanta can afford to lose Josh Smith

I have to disagree with your assessment that Atlanta won’t pay Josh Smith. I think they have to give Josh Smith some big money at this point to prevent a fan revolt. With Childress gone and most of the major free agents gone, there’s nowhere else for the Hawks to spend their money. Atlanta lowballed Childress figuring he had nowhere to go as a RFA, but him leaving to go to Greece must have been a huge psychological blow and a PR nightmare. I just can’t see how they can let Josh Smith get away now too.

by nuttinbutnet on Jul 24, 2008 8:18 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

How exactly do you figure they won’t pay big money for Smith?

What do I think about trading Wright and Harrington for Smith? Provided we could get Smith to accept a trade here, (and that’s a big provision) I think ATL would roll around on the floor laughing at the offer. Why exactly would they want Harrington back? Remember, they had him 3 years ago and when his contract expired they made ZERO attempts to bring him back. They were content to see him waddle out of town to be anywhere other than ATL.

by jae on Jul 24, 2008 9:05 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think ATL would roll around on the floor laughing at the offer.

Assuming we even wanted Smith who do you think Atl. would take from us to do the deal?

by Skeptic con Urquell on Jul 24, 2008 9:41 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Looking at the W starting line up...

Floor spacing would be horrible for four people who need to be around the basket to be effective… two of which are slashers. Unless Smith could magically build a reliable mid range-perimeter jumper, it would be a tough offensive unit. Now there’s no doubt that Smith would help us defensively, but he’s a TO monster and would probably be a headcase trying to learn Nellie’s offensive sets. I’m not really willing to give up Wright (who could end up being better than Smith) for a chance to see whether it would work or not.

by Mr. Monday Night on Jul 24, 2008 10:41 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Stretching the floor, screening, opening up lanes

It was “organized chaos.” And I said sets… not plays. Big difference. Sets are basically motions that you go through to try and get a play on the fly. A play is basically drawn up by design.

mike dunleavy sr. loves PLAYS, which is why BD will be crying in about 6 months from now.

by Run Dubz on Jul 24, 2008 4:09 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Does he?

I remember when he coached Portland to the WCF twice it was isolation city most times down court. Iso Sheed, Iso Bonzi, iso Pippen, etc.

I can’t really say for sure what a Dunleavy team is guaranteed to do, unlike how you KNOW a Nelly coached team will run n’ gun. I think Dunleavy adjusts a bit more to his players, for better or worse.

Baron is an elite PG, even with his attitude, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Dunleavy opens the floor up a bit. Yeah, Kaman won’t be able to keep up, but Thornton and Gordon can.

Overall, the Clippers got good players but seem very mismatched to me, so I can’t say for sure how they’ll play. I don’t think Dunleavy is a control freak coach, however. He never would have survived his Portland years if he was.

Okeafor

Fits better in Atl’s line up. They should let Marvin Williams play more min. and see if he is capable of being a star in the NBA. Harrington would be the 6th man. Wright and may be a draft could make the deal happen.

ATL line up:

PG bibby
SG johnson
SF williams – harrington
PF horford – wright
C okeafor – pachulia

by gambinofam on Jul 24, 2008 11:33 AM PDT   0 recs

They can't add Harrington, Wright, and Okafor

It would have to be a 3 way trade…

Warriors get: JSmith
Charlotte gets: Harrington, Wright
ATL gets: Okafor

a 3 way trade with 2 S&Ts? Wouldn’t Charlotte want JSmove as well?

This is pretty far fetched.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Jul 24, 2008 11:44 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Definitely brighter, but not right away....

I still see a 35-47 season this year, but they should be back to high 40’s in a few years. We just gotta be patient with this younger team. Plus, you have to consider the Nellie factor cuz if and when he jumps ship and decides he no longer has the passion to coach this team, we take at least a step or two back unless we land a proven coach.
The future does look promising though…we can only hope for the best!

We Believe!!!
