Source: Monta signs 6 year deal!?

ESPN's Chris Sheridan makes a quick comment on the monta ellis situation in a somewhat unrelated article regarding the "nba players to euro" trend...

"Among the restricted free agents still sitting unsigned are Emeka Okafor (Charlotte), Ben Gordon and Luol Deng (Chicago), Delonte West (Cleveland), Sasha Vujacic (Lakers), Nenad Krstic (Nets), Andre Iguodala and Louis Williams (Philadelphia), Ryan Gomes (Minnesota), and Andris Biedrins and Monta Ellis (Golden State) -- although a source told ESPN.com that Ellis has agreed conceptually to a six-year contract to remain with the Warriors."

Not exactly your most reliable content but significant nonetheless... Just thought I would toss this out there as my first diary in probably a year (things have been getting too hectic on this site but dont worry, i still check in and read everyday. Just dont have as much time to argue with the likes of the respected yet hard to find opinions these days of olympicmike,sleepy, et al...)

So anyways, DISCUSSION: Does anyone think this is one of those handshake deals that wont go down until after weve settled the buike/evans dilemma... If not, then why havent we heard any other confirmation yet?

Yeah your probably right about the fact that they are just waiting to clear up the Buike/Evans situation. As has been widely discussed we needed to do things in the right order this offseason in order to pick up all these free agents and trade picks for players. I’m sure they explained this to Monta and Beans up front and I’m guessing that they have had the deals pretty close to complete for a little while now. Now that the frenzy is dying down I think we should hear some news in the next few days… or at least I hope we will.

just kind of nice to hear about publicly i guess. Its obviously the right think to do so that we maximize cap space without going into the lux tax, so good. Again, just nice to hear were on the right track, the last thing I would wanna hear is that negotiations were breaking down and we were in the process of offering the 1 year tender after which he would become an UFA

i dont think this kid is gonna get worse by any means, and will likely get better. by conventional nba standards, he has not even hit his “prime” yet.

AND he’s only 22 (23 soon). meaning he will finish the last year of his contract when he’s 28!!!!

...come on, at this early point in his career, this is a guy you want to lock up very long term (unlike BD).
