Chris Cohan: Worst Owner in the NBA
He has set our team up for failure for those 12 years we didnt make the playoffs. He is very cheap(i am being generous) and has put bad people in charge of our personnel. We had i believe 9 different coaches during that span. They drafted horribly. They gave bad contracts , and traded quality player, even stars, for a bunch of duds.
He has written the book for "How to ruin an NBA FRANCHISE IN 15 YEARS"
If we wish to contend like a normal team will with rebuilding for 2-4 years then contending for 5-7 years we need larry ellison to buy the team. instead we have 12 years of rebuilding and 2 years of contending. he has stood back and looked back at the mess he created and has done nothing....... classic cohan. if you agree with me comment on here and show your displeasure with him. ps. recently we couldnt aquire garnett because it was going to be close to the luxury. then we traded j rich because it is to much money.....hmmm 11 million a year. and now we cant keep azubuike for 1 million a year more even though we are under the cap. classic cohan. it is a classic. dont be suprised if we need to trade monta in a cuple years because we need more money. i will take great players for alot of money then losing them to lose their contracts

Don't be lame...
Get a clue bud… Find some happiness in your life. Chris Cohan has learned from his mistakes and now is doing a great job. Bringing in Chris Mullin and Don Nelson. He is letting the brains run the team. And as of now, we are 2 to 3 years away from having a veteren team that will compete year after year. Like our other bay area team… The Sharks.

Great job? Dunno, but he’s not as terrible an owner as he once was. It didn’t take 15 years for him to ruin the franchise. The was accomplished in less than a half season. Then it languished in the pit, in large part because it remained a rudderless mess.
Cohan made terrible decisions. Twardzik was a mistake, though apparently a highly respected one around the league. They publicly stated that they were going to value “character” after the Webber/Owens/Sprewell revolt and that went poorly. Cohan either hired Twardzik and then meddled or just hired the wrong guy, but either way, it’s on him. He replaced him with PJ and St. Jean, two guys with no business running the club. Things didn’t get better.
The coaches, on paper should have done better, but they seemed to flip flop. “We need a player’s coach, no, we need a structured taskmaster, no, a player’s coach.” The oscillations ignored that what they needed was talented players and some idea of what they wanted to do for more than the next half season. Didn’t happen and Adelman (otherwise clearly a guy who can win games) and Cowans (a guy successful before) failed as much as the predictably bad Winters and St. Jean.
Cohan seemed to let them spend money, just not wisely and in a haphazard manner. Max deal for Jamison was too much (at the time max deals were being given out like candy on Halloween), Damp got too much, Caffey and Fortson got too much. Players didn’t regularly leave because they weren’t getting paid and there was never cap room to attract free agents. It wasn’t cheap so much as stupid. And stupid wound up costing them Arenas as they didn’t have money because they’d (gasp) NOT been cheap with some really mundane “talent”.
Bringing in Mullin was a move that didn’t really seem to make much sense from anything other than PR. He “trained” under St. Jean and hasn’t been an overly inspired GM. I blame Cohan for that, as well as for the Monty hire, a move that only made sense if you thought the local guy would be a draw. Only wins are a long term draw, but Cohan’s probably not thinking with real evidence.
Mullin hasn’t been a disaster, and hadn’t totally crapped out the upward trend that had started before under the St.Jean/Musselman period despite the (likely Cohan forced) Montgomery hire. But he hasn’t been a real serious inspiration either. I think he’s learning, but fear that he could still be overreacting to his last mistake. The “turnaround” was getting Nellie, who wins wherever he goes. Good move, one that Mullin apparently got to happen and Cohan shelled out the not insignificant change to make happen. I can’t call Mullin a failure as a result, but I can’t really put him as anything other than average given the number of mistakes he’s made.
It appears that Cohan has less to do with things now, and that seems to be a good thing. I suspect that short of a 3peat championship run, there will be people who will always claim he’s terrible and won’t separate him from his early years. And that’s somewhat fair. I doubt he’s completely changed his spots, but I don’t think he’s the major suck and drag on the franchise he once was. He’s just, like Mullin not terribly inspiring, hovering in that large area of mediocre or slightly below that’s easy to occupy.

We need a real owner
who understands what it takes to take a risk and and is able to make big trades. It took him 10+ years for him to wake up. Does he have passion. Or is he here to own a team to just own. He needs to be more involved in the team. He can’t wait every couple of years for a lucky break into the playoffs.
by goldenstatewarriors on Jul 24, 2008 12:26 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think that we’ve seen what happens when he is “more involved” and it isn’t pretty. I don’t see any rule that an involved owner makes for a better team. There are plenty or involved owners but there are some silent guys. Is the owner in Miami particularly involved? How about San Antonio? Detroit? I honestly don’t know, but I don’t hear much to suggest that they’re “involved” or that it’s somehow responsible for their successes. I’d worry about Cohan’s “passion” if he suited up and played. He doesn’t. The fewer decisions he’s involved with the better.

more like
cheapest owner in the NBA. He is a worst owner because he’s cheap.

Your evidence that he’s the cheapest owner is…?

Many Teams Try to Avoid the Luxury Tax
So I am not sure you can make too big a gripe there. A few teams are able to get players to take less because they have real anchor stars (celtics, spurs) or they are attractive places to play (LA, Miami etc.) where players will take less. For whatever reason the Bay Area is not seen as a prime spot to play. If we were lucky enough to draft Shaq, Duncan, or James, (and be horrible for one year) we simply would not have this problem. Instead we are steadily rebuilding without taking horrible contracts (in my opinion) which is the smartest route at this point.

don't cry about azabuike
he is nothing special!! i understand frustration about richardson and especially arenas. s* happens. we have had bad luck and many in the organization have made bad decisions
by Agent Zero on Jul 23, 2008 9:57 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think the author of this diary has even the slightest evidence that Azubuike isn’t being kept because of a Cohan “save” directive. It’s just his rant and he’s not interested in thinking carefully about it. The thought process is Cohan=cheap and everything follows from that. Nothing more interesting in it all, and nothing of substance to the post.

IT'S ONLY MONEY
Oh suuuuuure…shell out JUST ANOTHER million to keep BUIKE! Every dollar counts, or in this case hundreds of thousands of dollars, when you’re near the cap and luxury tax! Easy for everyone else to say “pay to keep him” when it’s not their wallets it’d be coming out from!
Just as WE all don’t know what it’s like to be an NBA GM, we are even that much further from knowing what it’s like to be an NBA OWNER!
Let’s all get over losing a good role player for ONLY a million more!
by scottiepimppen on Jul 23, 2008 10:10 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
yeah
money but it didn’t stop Cohan from giving foyle a high priced contract, which I do add we are steal paying for!

it'd be silly for...
the Warriors to be in the luxary tax and not have a guarantee playoffs. With our 06-07 roster, we literally got in by our last game. With the verge on Monta becoming a future star, trading Jrich was the only thing to due to futher develop Monta’s talent (debatable topic). Last year, we were able to snag a few more wins than we did the year before because we were somewhat more deeper. This year, Cohan has evenly spent the money where our second unit can be a legitimate starting lineup.

"traded j rich because it is to much money....."
Should be “J-Rich” and “it’s too much money” not “to much”

In all honesty
all these terribly rich guys are like this. It’s why they are rich. They need to be ruthless in order to do what they do. Trust me. My CEO is a dick and loves to fire people right before Xmas. Don’t for once think Cohan is the only dick out there.

Firing people right before Christmas?
That’s “COLD BLOOOODED”
But, then again, is there a good time to fire people? At least giving them Christmas break allows them to hit the pavement running when people get back from vacation.

I think he does that
so the company doesn’t have to pay those people the period during Xmas vacation. Like I said, these guys make the big bucks for a reason and being classy isn’t one of them.

What're you talking about?
Just because he lied to the previous owner of the Sonics knowing full well that he could get around the legalities because the offense is pretty hard to prove and Stern is his best buddy? Puh-lease. He bought a team to bring it to OKC. His fans have always been those in OKC. In that respect, he’s one of the best owners. Just because he’s evil doesn’t make him a bad owner. Plus, he’s got KD and Jeff Green, and a slew of draft picks coming through the pipeline for renting Kurt Thomas for a week.

ok
can we at least agree he’s the most evil owner then?
