Warriors Match Clippers Offer To Azubuike

http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/53731/20080724/warriors_match_clippers_offer_to_azubuike/

So Mullin decided to match the offer, I don't know if it's a good move for that kind of money (probably a bit much). Anyway, at least we won't see Buki develop with another team. So those of you likes Azubuike's game (or arms, lol) can rejoice!

Does that mean the deal with Evans fall through? I doubt they're going to sign another player that plays the same position. I think we can expect Monta's and Biedrins' contracts soon.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Evans thought that W’s are cash cow

I agree with you. I think after the way W’s went on the shopping spree this summer handed out contracts, he thought he could make a real good penny here. I’m glad we sent a message that we are still responsible. Azubuike is a great player that will bring lots of energy. Love them matching the offer.

So Long Maruice Evans

We hardly knew ya’.

Sounds like the $six million deal was Evan’s for the taking, he just got a bit greedy. Let’s see if he does better elsewhere.

I’m more comfortable with signing Buike. The $milion more per year is worth the potential improvement over Evans. Right now, they are fairly even players, but Kaz is 5 1/2 years younger. Also, the deal is fair value (thanks Clippers!). Buike has an OK shot at being an above average player, a pretty good shot at being an average player, niether of which is Evans.

by San Francisco Slim on Jul 24, 2008 1:47 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I definitely think that extra million is worth his upside at his age, Evans is already who he’s going to be in this league, buike has some room to improve still. Just as Michael Jordan once said, you get paid on Potential in this league.

I'm happy

I was intrigued that Mo Evans was a good defender, so I thought IF we got him at a discount to Buike it would have been ok, but I’d much rather have Kelenna. More potential, and we can’t let the Clips get two of our players.

The roster is just about full! We’ll see what Mo gets elsewhere.

by Eggman on Jul 24, 2008 1:50 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes Kelenna is back...

This is awesome news, I love this kid and his drive, at 2.9 million it’s a steal this kid is good and I can’t wait to see him piss Kobe off again!

by Rach on Jul 24, 2008 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really?

From this perspective, it seemed that they would match, if they didn’t get Evans to sign a cheaper deal. You heard otherwise?

by San Francisco Slim on Jul 24, 2008 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not really

There were whispers that they would let him go when we were in Las Vegas. They seemed rational because, frankly, Azubuike does nothing to help this team become a playoff team again. It sounded to me like the general consensus was that the Warriors would let the kiddies play and grow and develop .. with Azubuike back, that likely isn’t going to happen for Randolph and Belinelli.

I’m still trying to get a read on what the Warriors are trying to do this offseason. There’s been a lot of activity, but I don’t know how it will translate to achievement just yet. I feel like there’s something else that has to happen .. another shoe left to drop, if you will. I know they were trying to do things last week, but I don’t know where those discussion are now.

Working on it ..

I felt like the Harirngton chip was going to be cashed .. they must be at a stalemate. Mullin loves him, Nellie is indifferent. I thought they could get a few pieces for him, but now they don’t need that. The roster is basically set after re-signing Monta and Andris. I can’t see much more change on the horizon.

The minutes will break down something like this ..

Monta (25) / MWill (18) / Watson (5)
Jack (30) / Monta (10) / Azubuike (8)
Maggette (35) / Azubuike (13)
Harrington (25) / Jack (5) / Wright (12) / Hendrix (5)
Biedrins (25) / Turiaf (20) / Wright (3)

HAHA

Stop making me do math to add up to 48! I don’t think Williams will start – if that happens, the team is going to have to be forced to moving Jack. There’s too much talent at the 2/3 to have Monta there as well, know what I mean? He’s GOT to develop that part of his game.

If he doesn’t then signing him to a long term high price deal will not look too smart? Seems like the compromises in play making and defense to keep him are hardly worth the benefits? Couldn’t we get more return by spending the money on a power forward instead?

It’s true—the roster will be a bit of a mess if this doesn’t pan out. But I think given his youth and potential, Monta would be extremely tradeable, as would a number of other parts of our team… I think it wouldn’t be hard to retool, if it became absolutely necessary.

Romes Mac Mojous

by ROMESdavidWOOD37 on Jul 24, 2008 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's possible

I think Turiaf will play the 4 against premier post players like Boozer. But I don’t see it being consistent. Mostly because Turiaf played the 5 for the Lakers after Bynum went down.

I think Wright will get a chance against those guys first and when he gets bumped around, Turiaf will be inserted sooner and sooner as the year goes on.

All those minutes could change in a heartbeat.....

Should some of the younger guys acclimate to the NBA quicker than anticipated.

by goldenstatefan on Jul 24, 2008 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Hendrix.....

will adapt to the ruggedness (is that even a word?) of the NBA’s inside game. It’s a question of if he can defend the post.

by goldenstatefan on Jul 24, 2008 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wait wait wait

Nellie’s going to go 11 deep? Maybe I miscounted but I doubt he’s playing 11 guys. And where’s Marco fit in? Then he’s going 12 deep? I don’t think so. Either way, 11 or 12 deep, Nellie don’t play dat.

Hendrix? I don’t think he’s averaging 5 minutes per game. Maybe 5 minutes per game that he actually plays in but he’s only going to play maybe 15 games.

And I’m sure CJ and/or MWill are going to get a bunch of DNP-CD’s in there. He’s not going to sit Monta or push Jax or Maggs minutes too low.

I’d have to think Nellie’s rotation is not going to be more than 9 guys. Maybe early on he tries 11 but after awhile (15-20 games?) he’ll roll with the guys he trusts.

And as a side note, what do you think: if Beans is only playing 25 minutes a night, is he worth the 9-10 mill per year he might get? I mean if Turiaf is getting paid half of what Beans gets but plays 80% of the minutes, seems like Beans is asking for waaaay too much.

by Fantasy Junkie on Jul 24, 2008 4:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

In nellie's system

does beans play only 25 min. other teams would be happy to pay him that much and play him more minutes. also i don’t think u can compare salaries with a starter and back up by looking at minutes. if so than i think all starters make way too much.

by nuttinbutnet on Jul 24, 2008 5:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yea i know

it’s a simplistic analysis but it just looks odd to me. if my backup is playing nearly as many minutes as my starter, why am I paying my starter so much? I’d rather play beans 30 minutes and turiaf 15.

by Fantasy Junkie on Jul 24, 2008 5:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hendrix

The team absolutely loves Hendrix and says he’s ready to play now. I’m sure there will be games where one guy gets a lot of PT (like Biedrins). Hendrix and Watson aren’t going to get much PT .. just threw them in there. You’re looking at 8-9 deep with those two as throw-ins. Wright is the other question mark .. I don’t think he has showed enough, but i think he’s got to get some time.

by pree on Jul 24, 2008 5:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm a little wary

You’re much closer to them than any of us, but I’m a little wary of Mullin and Nelson saying they love a guy and he’s ready to play. If I recall correctly, they said that last year, that Lasme was going to contribute more than Wright and that he was ready to play.

Hopefully Hendrix is ready to play and their enthusiasm for him is genuine, but I have a hard time taking serious what Nellie and Mullin say about a 2nd rounder until it actually happens.

I hope you’re right about Hendrix though.

by Fantasy Junkie on Jul 24, 2008 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

pree

does the team love hendrix enough to play him more than or in front of oh lets say somebody that was drafted #8 overall? also does the team love buike enough to take minutes away from oh lets say some one that was drafted 18th overall?

by Rach on Jul 25, 2008 7:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I certainly hope that the staff doesn’t assign PT according to where someone was drafted and instead uses their ability to play the damn game as the primary marker.

Wright’s limited minutes worked out reasonably well last year. There was a problem when he was on the court with Biedrins, but Wright showed he could do some things. Belinelli, not so much.

by buky on Jul 25, 2008 6:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't forget ...

... AZ is still a little kiddie, too. Belinelli is a definitely never going to happen because he can’t play defense in the Summer League much less the big leagues. Still, its interesting how you see future development in Belinelli, who had EU experience to go with NBA time, and none for AZ. Maybe, you need to look closer at his stats. Certainly, you remember how he shut down (OK, frustrated) Kobe for a while. He will always be a better rebounder, defender, cutter, even perhaps a better shooter than Belinelli. Personally, I think I would rather see Belinelli in the D-League and give other people on the team a chance to succeed in the NBA .

Also, nobody knows how things will translate until they conclude – we can only guess.

BUT, there is tremendous upside in KA. I see that in my crystal ball!

BTW, this is only a comment and my opinion.

by cfrazie88 on Jul 24, 2008 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

AZ is no kiddie to me

He may be young, but you know what you’re going to get from Azubuike, not necessarily the case for Belinelli. I know a lot of folks around here think Azubuike is going to develop into a major stuf and I don’t necessarily see THAT, but you do know what he’ll give you – tough defense, versatile scoring, mediocre outside shot, nice mid-range game, dribble-drives, etc.

He’ll be better across the board, but I don’t think it will be earth-shattering. I saw what he is working on in his game – it’s his jumper – and I feel as though he gives the team stability in his depth.

by pree on Jul 24, 2008 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, I agree

But, he is young and with relatively limited NBA experience. So if you look at his numbers from day 1 to now – everything is improving (except his FT shooting). THAT has to be an upside. The question is how “up”.

YES, I like KA a lot!

by cfrazie88 on Jul 24, 2008 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hm

I don’t see as much upside as the rest of you, but maybe that’s because I feel like he’s already quite prodcutive!

by pree on Jul 24, 2008 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

True

We can argue this all day – what is and isn’t upside – but I just don’t know if you’re going to get ALL that much out of Buike. Will he be better? Certainly. Enough to put this team over the top? I have my reservations.

by pree on Jul 24, 2008 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So... you're saying he's valuable at $3M & 15-20mins

But for a team that’s not going to the playoffs, that’s not much. I know he’s gotta take care of his family, but from a basketball perspective, he’d be better served elsewhere where there isn’t this giant Monta/Jax/Maggs roadblock at the 2/3. We’ll see how things turn out I guess. He is still young though, and Belinelli thus far hasn’t shown much of anything outside of SL and garbage time.

I agree

that what we have seen from buike is what we will get. i know he is young but u watch a player and realize his potential in the future. buike’s upside isn’t as grand as alot of people think. Bellie has more upside, and i was hoping to watch him display it this season. i guess that won’t happen now. perhaps bellie will never be as good as buike is right now, but now he probably won’t even get the chance to try as a warrior.

i still think guys like buike are easy to repace in the NBA. heck we almost got evans for cheaper.

by nuttinbutnet on Jul 24, 2008 3:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

pree now im confused?
It sounded to me like the general consensus was that the Warriors would let the kiddies play and grow and develop

then why even go after evans why not just sign any SL guy or dont even sign anybody. you are right though about another shoe needing to drop. if it is about the kids then al and jax would be the next ones out. maybe they brought back buike to take jax minutes once the other shoe actually drops.

by Rach on Jul 24, 2008 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I mean .. c’mon .. Evans on the cheap for a little while or a terrible SL player? The team has to still be somewhat competitive – not sure if Robert Kurz exactly does that, right? :)

and i agree but nellie take on things isnt conventional. he would just go with a shorter rotation like last year

by Rach on Jul 24, 2008 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The moves ..

The roster moves indicate a lesson learned by running the Big 3 into the ground last season – I think he’s going to limit some minutes here and there

by pree on Jul 24, 2008 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I respectfully disagree

Last season at this time we had just as many potential rotation players. There were the eight actual rotation players (the starters, plus Buike, Barnes and Pietrus), plus the veterans Croshere and Hudson, plus the hyped rookies, Wright and Belinelli, plus POB, who was the one of the stars of training camp and pre-season. As it turned out, Nelson wasn’t particularly happy with any of his bench players last season (at times he liked Buike and Pietrus) and even stopped playing his favorite altogether, Barnes.

I don’t see the situation being any differerent at this time. There’s no guarantee that anybody will play past the first 8, and even then some of those guys won’t play. Although Wright is the head scratcher. A lot of talent, length and potential, but he’s not a practical fit, particularly for Nelson.

by San Francisco Slim on Jul 24, 2008 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Figuring Nellie out ..

Figuring out Nellie’s rotation is always tough (maybe impossible) because he sees matchups differently than anyone else I know. But, I do feel like it’ll be hard to keep Wright and Hendrix off the court for a few minutes, at least.

The bulk of time will go to Monta, Jack, Maggette, and Azu at the 2-3, but this team has a bit more depth with Turiaf and Azubuike than last year’s. Could Nellie really turn to a no-back Croshere? Thud wasn’t ever really an option in my book and they even resorted to bringing back Webber, that’s how desperate things got. AB/Turiaf is nice enough .. a rotation of Harrington/Wright/Hendrix is questionable, but Nellie might be okay with it now that he says he’s more committed to playing the youngsters.

by pree on Jul 24, 2008 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd actually much rather go for...

Louis Amundson… I think he’s been much more productive and much more aggressive than Kurz has been in the SL.

Twas a joke :)

Of course Louis is the better prospect, but there are some people that feel he isn’t going to be on the team. It’s too bad – he’s a nice player, but where will he get minutes?

I’d much rather see Wright and Hendrix play, but Louis would be a nice guy to turn to off the bench if the youngsters are struggling. I heard he wants a two-year deal, which the team might be willing to give him.

Warriors Match Clippers Offer To Azubuike

See, Evans is only in it for the money. KA is far, far too valuable to have been let go to the Clips with no compensation. So far, BD is left hanging….Brand, now Buike.

by Mr. Monday Night on Jul 24, 2008 2:00 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with everyone else on this site

Buike has an upside, Evans does not, for that reason I am pleased, not to mention he knows what Nellie wants so he only has to learn better, not less. Obviously Nellie likes him because he started him early last year before Jackson came back. He should only get better. I think too many on this site worry that they paid “too much” for this player or that, but that is the NBA today. Hell, every team is paying too much, look at Harrington’s contract, that is too much, and soon enough Monta is going to get too much, the same with Biedrins. The only danger is cap room hell, and nothing in these contracts put the Warriors in danger. Next year, Foyle’s buyout is off, and Harrington can disappear to someone if necessary. I am very happy with this matching offer.

Will start calling Ka-Buike, “The Beast.” He will throw down this season.

Glad we didn’t sign Evans—not worth the savings for the diminished toughness, rebounding, and losing The Beast to someone in the division (even if it is the Clips).

Glad to hear this. I’m not actually sure who would’ve been the better investment between Buike and Evans, but I love me some Buike.

Whatever you think of our chances this year, you’ve got to be somewhat heartened by the youth on this team.

Monta Ellis is 22.
Kelenna Azubuike is 24.
Anthony Randolph is 19.
Brandan Wright is 20.
Andris Biedrins is 22.

That’s a genuinely promising young ‘un at every position, with a sixth man, to boot. (We have other a bunch of other young guys like Williams, Marco, Kosta, Watson and Hendrix - hell, even Turiaf is only 25 - but I think these five are clearly the cream of the crop.)

How many other teams in the league have five guys that promising at 24 or younger? I’d say the Blazers have us beat on this front… teams like the Grizzles and Bulls have a bunch of young guys with upside. But at least twenty other teams can’t touch that quintet of players in terms of potential. Pretty nice feeling.

So the roster currently looks like this:

PG: Monta Ellis, Marcus Williams, (C.J. Watson)
SG: Stephen Jackson, Kelenna Azubuike, Marco Belinelli
SF: Corey Maggette, Anthony Randolph
PF: Al Harrington, Brandan Wright, Richard Hendrix
C: Andris Biedrins, Ronny Turiaf, Kosta Perovic

...with one slot to be filled, or two if we don’t retain C.J. (which we probably will).

If Monta’s a viable point guard, that’s a pretty solid team… if not, there are question marks, but we certainly have assets we could move for someone.

The dream move, as has been discussed to death, o’ course, is to package Al and a young chip or two for a quality power forward. I’d say there’s zero chance of doing that this year, but there might be a tiny chance of it a year from now, when Al’s an expiring. I think we’d be wise to hold onto him for now.

Technically,

Croshere is still on the roster (FA), but if nobody offers him anything enticing will the Dubs?

What do you think of going after Odom?

AH and something (I’d day Perovic and /or Bellinelli, Lakers would probably say Randolph or Wright) for Odom? LO would be a good fit for Nellie Ball. Could be an initiator, as well as playing some 5. Odom has a nice expiring contract.

Also, Al could be used as the main part of S &T package for Josh Smith, who apparently wants out of Atlanta. This would for sure mean parting with Wright and/or Randolph. I think the Warriors can take a few million more in salary, if push comes to shove.

I wonder if they are thinking of anything big like this.

by San Francisco Slim on Jul 24, 2008 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Odom is out of the question

Sorry, but the Lakers are trying to use Odom to bag a big fish like Artest. I don’t think Wright and Harrington would do it for them.

As far as the Smith thing .. I think Atlanta wants to wrap that sucker up because of the PR hit they just took with Childress. They are rumored to be scrambling for pieces and might even use their MLE now.

Re: Childress

Great piece today by Dave Berri on the stupidity of letting Childress go, what it says about the restrictiveness of the CBA, and what it means going forward:

With European teams entering the market, the NBA’s ability to exploit (i.e. pay workers less than the revenue the worker generates) professional basketball players is mitigated. And this means the NBA is going to have to either:

a. live with players like Childress emigrating to the Europe.

b. devise new rules so that NBA teams can pay wages that are closer to what the player is worth.

It should read new rules to overpay them as much as the europeans are willing to?

Re: Odom

What if Sac holds out for it’s insistence of including Kenny Thomas’ contract in the deal and the Lakers don’t give in? The Kings actually have a competitive team, as is, and like Artest. Do the Lakers then trade Odom to some one else? They might be interested in Harrington, who is more of conventional SF than Odom, yet has the skills to play the triangle well.

by San Francisco Slim on Jul 24, 2008 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The fact that Odom is unconventional

Is exactly what Phil Jackson liked about him!

The Lakers are in a place where they’ll only trade Odom if they can get back a “missing piece” type of player. The Artest/Thomas for Odom deal works nicely for them – Artest is the thug they wish they had on the perimeter and Thomas helps with the loss of Turiaf. I don’t know if they’ll get desperate and just move Odom for the sake of doing so. After all, they contended for a championship with that team and will only get better with Bynum coming back.

Lacks the Killer Instinct

He doesn’t have the will to bring his team to victory. He’ll help get us in the playoffs, but I’d rather try to win a championship in several years. He doesn’t show up in big games as you saw in the Finals this year. I’d rather keep Randolph and his upside. Maybe Wright and Bellie could be worthwhile (maybe not), but even if so, why get another short-term fix when we’re developing a youth movement? That’s why we won’t likely see Jax or Al here next year.

by Don't Mess With The Cohan on Jul 24, 2008 8:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Drop the Harrington in S&T to ATL.

Sorry to keep bringing this up, but why would ATL want Harrington? We shouldn’t forget that he was theirs 3 years ago. They let his contract expire. They made next to zero attempts to keep him. He was a guy who demanded the ball, scored inefficiently, and didn’t rebound when he was there. He was a guy who figured prominently in a team that stunk to high heaven. We might be able to pawn him off on a new fool who once again looks at the 6-9 frame, sees the build of a PF and somehow conveniently ignores the near complete lack of post scoring and rebounding that’s good for a 2/3 but pretty damn lousy for a 4. But I don’t think the fools who have had him already will bite again. I suspect ATL would give him the “Screw you, go play in Europe if you don’t like our offers” before taking back 2 more years of Harrington at a bigger price tag than when he sucked for them the last time.

by ffgolden on Jul 24, 2008 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The problem with your argurment

is that it is rational and Atlanta’s management is not. The key to the deal would be Wright and/or Randolph. Harrington is just an average player whose salary and terms aren’t awful and can be a decent placeholder. The benefit for Atlanta is they save some instant money and then get Smith’s $15 million slot open in two seasons.

If Smith is really refusing to play for them, or if they just don’t want to meet his terms, but the Warriors do, it’s not a bad deal. Not that it will happen.

by San Francisco Slim on Jul 24, 2008 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

not that i disagree w/ you as to why ATL would want Harrington

but, in regards to one point, the GM is different from the one 2-3 years ago. Billy Knight got replaced by Rick Sund.

by the evil monkey on Jul 24, 2008 5:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

hm.

i’m saying i agree w/ the previous poster that Atlanta likely doesn’t want Al.

but he/she uses the point that the team previously made no effort to keep Al when they had him. which isn’t AS relevant when you consider that the person making the personnel decisions, the GM, has changed since then. maybe Rick Sund, like Mully, appreciates what Al brings to the table.

by the evil monkey on Jul 24, 2008 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps Sund is as easily fooled as Mullin. What Harrington brings to the table has never been terribly substantial.

by jae on Jul 24, 2008 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

unless you factor in

without him, there would have been no Murphy/Dun trade with Indy – increasing his value to us!

statistically he may not measure up to his contract, but he’s serving useful purposes in being able to move our albatrosses, being able to play Nelson’s style (or more to the point having enough skill that Nelson can make something with). He’s enough of a threat other teams can’t ignore him the way they will when Hendrix/Turiaf & Andris are on the floor together (our current alternative) and occasionally defends other teams’ bigs well. Serviceable, not sexy statistically but with the depth we’re developing he can fill a solid role. My spies tell me he’s also a good locker room guy, and again, on a young team that also pays unseen dividends.

If Pree was correct, and if Al’s own statement about being traded is a hint that he’s frustrated, you may get your wish. I hope he stays, and if not, I hope we don’t decimate the depth of bigs by trading him for another guard.

by hardcore on Jul 25, 2008 9:34 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’s realized his value to us already. What he cleared off the table (which was good) is different than what he brings to the table. Keeping him around because he helped us get rid of Murphy and Dunleavy’s contract doesn’t make sense. That purpose is over. Now we’re dealing with him on the court, where I think the subjective “can play Nellie’s style” is overvalued.

VERY INTERESTING

About the childress signing… (has to do with Azubuike… sorta)

Here’s some stuff that I had no idea about until I read the articles.

“He just said, ‘I can’t, I can’t go.’ I tried to tell him about the money and the difference between what he could make here, and if he were to go over there they would give him an out after every year. But he’s too young. If he was in the league for maybe three or four more years it might have been different, but he’s too young and he’s fought too hard to get to where he wanted to be.’‘

ahhhh

SORRY!!

One more interesting story on Kelenna Azubuike. =) It’ll provide us fans with a little insight on Kelenna’s thoughts as he waited for whether or not the Warriors would match his offer from the Clippers.

Azubuike had his heart prepared for the end of his Warriors career and was looking forward to his move to SoCal.

“At first I thought the Clippers would be a better situation,” Azubuike said during a phone interview Friday. “I thought the Warriors weren’t looking at me anymore.”

Obviously, Azubuike found out he was wrong, which the Warriors showed by matching the three-year, $9 million-plus offer sheet he signed with the Clippers — a day before the deadline. Such required a change of heart. “I’m happy to be back,” he said. “I love the organization. I love the area and the fans.”
