Warriors Match Clippers Offer To Azubuike
http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/53731/20080724/warriors_match_clippers_offer_to_azubuike/
So Mullin decided to match the offer, I don't know if it's a good move for that kind of money (probably a bit much). Anyway, at least we won't see Buki develop with another team. So those of you likes Azubuike's game (or arms, lol) can rejoice!
Does that mean the deal with Evans fall through? I doubt they're going to sign another player that plays the same position. I think we can expect Monta's and Biedrins' contracts soon.
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Evans thought that W’s are cash cow
I agree with you. I think after the way W’s went on the shopping spree this summer handed out contracts, he thought he could make a real good penny here. I’m glad we sent a message that we are still responsible. Azubuike is a great player that will bring lots of energy. Love them matching the offer.

So Long Maruice Evans
We hardly knew ya’.
Sounds like the $six million deal was Evan’s for the taking, he just got a bit greedy. Let’s see if he does better elsewhere.
I’m more comfortable with signing Buike. The $milion more per year is worth the potential improvement over Evans. Right now, they are fairly even players, but Kaz is 5 1/2 years younger. Also, the deal is fair value (thanks Clippers!). Buike has an OK shot at being an above average player, a pretty good shot at being an average player, niether of which is Evans.
by San Francisco Slim on Jul 24, 2008 1:47 PM PDT 0 recs
I definitely think that extra million is worth his upside at his age, Evans is already who he’s going to be in this league, buike has some room to improve still. Just as Michael Jordan once said, you get paid on Potential in this league.

I'm happy
I was intrigued that Mo Evans was a good defender, so I thought IF we got him at a discount to Buike it would have been ok, but I’d much rather have Kelenna. More potential, and we can’t let the Clips get two of our players.
The roster is just about full! We’ll see what Mo gets elsewhere.

Not really
There were whispers that they would let him go when we were in Las Vegas. They seemed rational because, frankly, Azubuike does nothing to help this team become a playoff team again. It sounded to me like the general consensus was that the Warriors would let the kiddies play and grow and develop .. with Azubuike back, that likely isn’t going to happen for Randolph and Belinelli.
I’m still trying to get a read on what the Warriors are trying to do this offseason. There’s been a lot of activity, but I don’t know how it will translate to achievement just yet. I feel like there’s something else that has to happen .. another shoe left to drop, if you will. I know they were trying to do things last week, but I don’t know where those discussion are now.

Working on it ..
I felt like the Harirngton chip was going to be cashed .. they must be at a stalemate. Mullin loves him, Nellie is indifferent. I thought they could get a few pieces for him, but now they don’t need that. The roster is basically set after re-signing Monta and Andris. I can’t see much more change on the horizon.
The minutes will break down something like this ..
Monta (25) / MWill (18) / Watson (5)
Jack (30) / Monta (10) / Azubuike (8)
Maggette (35) / Azubuike (13)
Harrington (25) / Jack (5) / Wright (12) / Hendrix (5)
Biedrins (25) / Turiaf (20) / Wright (3)

Stop making me do math to add up to 48! I don’t think Williams will start – if that happens, the team is going to have to be forced to moving Jack. There’s too much talent at the 2/3 to have Monta there as well, know what I mean? He’s GOT to develop that part of his game.

If he doesn’t then signing him to a long term high price deal will not look too smart? Seems like the compromises in play making and defense to keep him are hardly worth the benefits? Couldn’t we get more return by spending the money on a power forward instead?

It’s true—the roster will be a bit of a mess if this doesn’t pan out. But I think given his youth and potential, Monta would be extremely tradeable, as would a number of other parts of our team… I think it wouldn’t be hard to retool, if it became absolutely necessary.

It's possible
I think Turiaf will play the 4 against premier post players like Boozer. But I don’t see it being consistent. Mostly because Turiaf played the 5 for the Lakers after Bynum went down.
I think Wright will get a chance against those guys first and when he gets bumped around, Turiaf will be inserted sooner and sooner as the year goes on.

Wait wait wait
Nellie’s going to go 11 deep? Maybe I miscounted but I doubt he’s playing 11 guys. And where’s Marco fit in? Then he’s going 12 deep? I don’t think so. Either way, 11 or 12 deep, Nellie don’t play dat.
Hendrix? I don’t think he’s averaging 5 minutes per game. Maybe 5 minutes per game that he actually plays in but he’s only going to play maybe 15 games.
And I’m sure CJ and/or MWill are going to get a bunch of DNP-CD’s in there. He’s not going to sit Monta or push Jax or Maggs minutes too low.
I’d have to think Nellie’s rotation is not going to be more than 9 guys. Maybe early on he tries 11 but after awhile (15-20 games?) he’ll roll with the guys he trusts.
And as a side note, what do you think: if Beans is only playing 25 minutes a night, is he worth the 9-10 mill per year he might get? I mean if Turiaf is getting paid half of what Beans gets but plays 80% of the minutes, seems like Beans is asking for waaaay too much.

In nellie's system
does beans play only 25 min. other teams would be happy to pay him that much and play him more minutes. also i don’t think u can compare salaries with a starter and back up by looking at minutes. if so than i think all starters make way too much.

it’s a simplistic analysis but it just looks odd to me. if my backup is playing nearly as many minutes as my starter, why am I paying my starter so much? I’d rather play beans 30 minutes and turiaf 15.

Hendrix
The team absolutely loves Hendrix and says he’s ready to play now. I’m sure there will be games where one guy gets a lot of PT (like Biedrins). Hendrix and Watson aren’t going to get much PT .. just threw them in there. You’re looking at 8-9 deep with those two as throw-ins. Wright is the other question mark .. I don’t think he has showed enough, but i think he’s got to get some time.

I'm a little wary
You’re much closer to them than any of us, but I’m a little wary of Mullin and Nelson saying they love a guy and he’s ready to play. If I recall correctly, they said that last year, that Lasme was going to contribute more than Wright and that he was ready to play.
Hopefully Hendrix is ready to play and their enthusiasm for him is genuine, but I have a hard time taking serious what Nellie and Mullin say about a 2nd rounder until it actually happens.
I hope you’re right about Hendrix though.

I certainly hope that the staff doesn’t assign PT according to where someone was drafted and instead uses their ability to play the damn game as the primary marker.
Wright’s limited minutes worked out reasonably well last year. There was a problem when he was on the court with Biedrins, but Wright showed he could do some things. Belinelli, not so much.

Don't forget ...
... AZ is still a little kiddie, too. Belinelli is a definitely never going to happen because he can’t play defense in the Summer League much less the big leagues. Still, its interesting how you see future development in Belinelli, who had EU experience to go with NBA time, and none for AZ. Maybe, you need to look closer at his stats. Certainly, you remember how he shut down (OK, frustrated) Kobe for a while. He will always be a better rebounder, defender, cutter, even perhaps a better shooter than Belinelli. Personally, I think I would rather see Belinelli in the D-League and give other people on the team a chance to succeed in the NBA .
Also, nobody knows how things will translate until they conclude – we can only guess.
BUT, there is tremendous upside in KA. I see that in my crystal ball!
BTW, this is only a comment and my opinion.

AZ is no kiddie to me
He may be young, but you know what you’re going to get from Azubuike, not necessarily the case for Belinelli. I know a lot of folks around here think Azubuike is going to develop into a major stuf and I don’t necessarily see THAT, but you do know what he’ll give you – tough defense, versatile scoring, mediocre outside shot, nice mid-range game, dribble-drives, etc.
He’ll be better across the board, but I don’t think it will be earth-shattering. I saw what he is working on in his game – it’s his jumper – and I feel as though he gives the team stability in his depth.

So... you're saying he's valuable at $3M & 15-20mins
But for a team that’s not going to the playoffs, that’s not much. I know he’s gotta take care of his family, but from a basketball perspective, he’d be better served elsewhere where there isn’t this giant Monta/Jax/Maggs roadblock at the 2/3. We’ll see how things turn out I guess. He is still young though, and Belinelli thus far hasn’t shown much of anything outside of SL and garbage time.

that what we have seen from buike is what we will get. i know he is young but u watch a player and realize his potential in the future. buike’s upside isn’t as grand as alot of people think. Bellie has more upside, and i was hoping to watch him display it this season. i guess that won’t happen now. perhaps bellie will never be as good as buike is right now, but now he probably won’t even get the chance to try as a warrior.

I respectfully disagree
Last season at this time we had just as many potential rotation players. There were the eight actual rotation players (the starters, plus Buike, Barnes and Pietrus), plus the veterans Croshere and Hudson, plus the hyped rookies, Wright and Belinelli, plus POB, who was the one of the stars of training camp and pre-season. As it turned out, Nelson wasn’t particularly happy with any of his bench players last season (at times he liked Buike and Pietrus) and even stopped playing his favorite altogether, Barnes.
I don’t see the situation being any differerent at this time. There’s no guarantee that anybody will play past the first 8, and even then some of those guys won’t play. Although Wright is the head scratcher. A lot of talent, length and potential, but he’s not a practical fit, particularly for Nelson.

Figuring Nellie out ..
Figuring out Nellie’s rotation is always tough (maybe impossible) because he sees matchups differently than anyone else I know. But, I do feel like it’ll be hard to keep Wright and Hendrix off the court for a few minutes, at least.
The bulk of time will go to Monta, Jack, Maggette, and Azu at the 2-3, but this team has a bit more depth with Turiaf and Azubuike than last year’s. Could Nellie really turn to a no-back Croshere? Thud wasn’t ever really an option in my book and they even resorted to bringing back Webber, that’s how desperate things got. AB/Turiaf is nice enough .. a rotation of Harrington/Wright/Hendrix is questionable, but Nellie might be okay with it now that he says he’s more committed to playing the youngsters.

I agree with everyone else on this site
Buike has an upside, Evans does not, for that reason I am pleased, not to mention he knows what Nellie wants so he only has to learn better, not less. Obviously Nellie likes him because he started him early last year before Jackson came back. He should only get better. I think too many on this site worry that they paid “too much” for this player or that, but that is the NBA today. Hell, every team is paying too much, look at Harrington’s contract, that is too much, and soon enough Monta is going to get too much, the same with Biedrins. The only danger is cap room hell, and nothing in these contracts put the Warriors in danger. Next year, Foyle’s buyout is off, and Harrington can disappear to someone if necessary. I am very happy with this matching offer.
