Future of Captain Jack

There have been several reports floating around that Nellie [jokingly] said he called captain Jack several times and has gotten no response back. Mullin himself said that he has not been in contact with him. He followed it up by saying he did not speak to him last offseason either. Last season's off season, was not like this one's however. I cannot imagine how the only captain left on the team would not have one conversation with the GM or Coach or players after all the shake-ups. This worry's me a little bit. Think about it. Captain Jack has seen the dubs treat two captains, fan favorites, and two players which gave the team their heart and sole, like garbage. Potentially, his good friend Al might be gone as well. If history is any indication captain jack won't be offered a deal after his contract is over. The problem is we need his leadership to progress the young guys, but, how much leadership will he show knowing he is going to be thrown under the bus next year. Don't get me wrong, he will still have to play great so he can get a good contract next year BUT what incentive does he have to go the extra mile behind the scenes and help our vast amount of young players.  How do you think it will play out.

How does Captain Jack feel and how will the situation play out next season?

P.S.- I don’t feel bad for anyone who makes that much money playing a game. (in the minds set of Gary Rad. )

I agree

It’s just entertainment. It’s not a matter of life and death. Doctors should honestly make more than pro athletes.

Captain Jack

should be the only captain. Maybe maggette as a co-captain.

Doctors do make more than most Pros.

In the long run doctors make way more than a majority of the players. Average pro career is 5 years, and avg salary in the league is about 2mil. Then you factor in that 40% of the retired players go bankrupt in 5 years.

Even the 2 mil number is skewed because of the huge contracts for some. Example in 2005 Peyton Manning made more than the rest of his 65 teammates COMBINED.

by joestar on Jul 24, 2008 6:57 PM PDT   0 recs

ummm, no

doctors DO NOT make over 1 million a year – even the higher end surgical specialists. They often have the overhead expenses of offices and staff salaries that Pro NBA players don’t. And non surgeons seldom make over $500,000/year. The high end salary of an Emergency Room physician is around $250,000 year. In 20 years, that comes to 5 million. Pros can make that in 2 years.

People go into medicine because they love it, not because they want to make alot of money. If they want to make alot of money, they get a law degree from a good school, join a big corporate firm and work their way up to partner.

by centerre on Jul 24, 2008 10:02 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

average salary

...in the NBA is about 5.5 mil.
...in the MLB is about 3 mil.
...in the NFL is about 1 mil.

and i’m not sure what doctors you know, but even the top surgeons dont make more than 300K/year MAX. the average is much closer to 175K/year. that’s good money, but not even close to pro athletes. and doctors don’t usually get endorsement deals either.

by Run Dubz on Jul 25, 2008 1:47 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Dude...

I did say doctors make more in the long run. Doctors have 30-40 year careers. Average pro career is 5 years, in the NFL it is like 2.5 yrs.

Plus most of those numbers are super skewed, due to the mega contracts. The average incomes don’t fluctuate as much in the world of doctors and surgeons. It usually is from 130-350K depending on specialty, and location. But in the the major sports you have a few players making HUGE amounts of money and most making below or around the average. However, since they’re average, their careers won’t last long.

It is actually easier and better to become a doctor than a pro athlete. The odds of making it pro from high school is incredibly small. Something like .003% for the NFL, and only slightly better for the NBA. This makes you wonder why so many kids want to become professional athletes.

Hey, if you guys don’t believe me that’s fine. But at least do some research from primary sources and not from ESPN.com.

I’ll take working for 2.5-5 years to make what a doctor would make after years of education and 30-40 years of working. That sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me.

It’s actually PLAYING for 2-3 years so it’s even better! No work involved!!

It is actually easier and better to become a doctor than a pro athlete.

easier? Than 4 years of undergraduate work followed by 4 more years of medical school and a 3-5 year residency before you can take the licensing exam? And this is something EVERYONE has to go through—even someone who graduates high school at the top of their class. They are not going to hand you a medical degree out of high school because you’re 6’11” and can sink baskets. Look at how many pro NBA players got there right out of high school. Aside from that, being placed in life or death situations where your judgment call may land you a nice fat malpractice suit? Being at the mercy of HMO’s when it comes to determining how much you will be paid for a procedure regardless of your cost?

The probabilities of becoming a pro athlete versus a doctor are lower because the number of pro athletes in comparison to the number of doctors in the country is marginally lower and so you’ve got a supply/demand thing going on, but your minimizing both the educational requirements as well as the payoffs for doctors with that kind of statement.

Hey, if you guys don’t believe me that’s fine. But at least do some research from primary sources and not from ESPN.com.

well, let’s see, does my 10+ years as a medical recruiter and law degree count for anything?

by centerre on Jul 25, 2008 11:24 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think...

the point of all this was to say over the course of a career the money might be close, but either way, becoming a doctor is something a lot of people can work towards, demand or not. Being a pro athelete is a fanasy. We all know it. So your analogy of being given a dgree because you’re 6’11 and can sink baskets is not accurate… High schoolers who are 6’11 and can sink baskets are not just given NBA contracts. But even if they were, NONE of us will ever be a 6’11 high school kid sinking baskets.. Its a fantasy, even for the few 6’11 high school kids who sink baskets, if there’s that many across the country that even exist… THat option is as real as being a millionaire musician or entertainer. We all have to work for living and watch the rest on tv. Its not real.

Good post...

Poor title. I totally agree we should be concerned about where Jax is in his head and if the Warriors are keepin the communication lines open (sounds like Nellie is). But we don’t need to feel sorry for him just yet…

by in for life on Jul 24, 2008 7:24 PM PDT   0 recs

i tried

to get Pree’s attention about the same subject matter. Maybe he can get an eclusive with jack and kinda probe his mind a bit on what he thinks about all the wheeling and dealing this offseason.

His mindset and demeanor this upcoming season is essential to whether the warriors are going to win 25 or 15 games. hopefully mullin knows how to massage Jax’ ego a bit. I wouldnt be surprised if after we start the season with a 5 game losing streak, Jax would do an Artest and demand to be traded.

I THINK

he’s right about that. we wont win too many games with this line up. baron was the heart and soul of the team and he ran sh!t. they dont have that person and i am just hoping that we get one of the top 3 picks next draft so we can get a center that has offense and not just score off tip ins and BD droppin dimes to him. I suspect humble pie for you my friend in about 6 months!!

Yes Baron was good, but collectively, our squad is much deeper now! We have at least three guys than can shoot over 20 points a game, thats no different to last year, but now we are packing some much bigger power behind these guys!

Not really, Boom got his 20 plus made the other guys better. Unless Marcus Williams turns out to be better than he looks we aren’t gonna play as good as last year. Remember we lost pietrus and Barnes and gained more rookies. Not good!! If Montay and Magette don’t get hurt and Jax don’t get discouraged we’ll be decent but not much fun to watch.

we have a more well balance team with more capable scorers

it’s not just 20+ ppg guys, we actually have a deep team, most capable of either something we need. I disagree about Boom. He was our heart and soul, yes, but he made too many mistakes, took too many stupid 3’s and could have been a much better distributor if he didn’t choose to score as much as he did. Plus he ran out of steam in the last part of the year, part of the reason why he stunk it up in the crucial games against the Mavs and Nuggets and why Nellie benched him in the second half of the last one.

You’ll find out that the growth of Monta, emergence Beans, Wright and Az, as well as the new pieces through the draft and FA will get us at least in that 32-42 win range, which I think may even be a bit conservative. They will likely be over .500. Playoffs is a crapshoot of course with a young team in the West.

by Don't Mess With The Cohan on Jul 29, 2008 9:36 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

YOU'RE RIGHT

we do have 3 guys that can score 20. but one of those guys(M.E.) have to start distributing the ball which may have less chances to shoot because he’ll be passing. its like asking kobe or wade to to play the point which they dont want to do. they need someone like a derek fisher who dont demand shots. lets face it, we signed monta to put up points and not to pass.

jack is close to being traded

just finished reading this article and it said jackson is close to being traded for diaw. could be a rumor or could be true

by ADOBO on Jul 24, 2008 8:40 PM PDT   0 recs

If I had to guess...

I’d say that Jack is not a happy man right now. it is seeming clearer and clearer that the W’s are going young and in a new direction. I’m not certain but I wouldn’t be surprised if Jack and Al got moved together. I don’t know if either of them are up for riding along on the youth movement. We’ll see soon enough I guess.

I would not like to see it, but I think you may be spot on here Mike. I have to say, I think there was quite a bit of joking and messing around in the “Baron, Jackson, Al and Monta” foursome and now with baron gone and a likely look to Monta to really step up and take a big role in this team, maybe management consider Al and Jackson a distraction?

Personally I think that would be a huge mistake and really feel Stack can become the sole Captain and glue that keeps all this promising talent together in the early days while they gel and my gut feeling says Al will have a better year this year!

Either way, I am looking forward to it and I hope our squad is now set!

Am I the only person who finds this speculating a little silly?

Jack’s a smart guy, and a veteran, to boot. He’s been on five different NBA teams, not to mention a CBA team and teams in three other countries. I think he’s aware this is a business.

I think he’s probably aware that the Baron/front office relationship was complicated on both sides, and that a parting probably made the most sense for everyone one. I think he’s probably also aware that, no matter swell a guy Matt Barnes may be, he’s not a great player, and that it was smart of us to negotiate him down last year. I think he’s aware that while it might be nice to play with your friends, it’s never a sure bet.

I think he probably understands why the front office deemed this youth movement necessary. I think he probably also understands that there is now a leadership vacuum on his team, and that consequently he’s more important than ever. Further, I think he understands that presenting himself as a leader could only help in improving his leaguewide image and getting a big contract next time out.

Stephen Jackson isn’t a Warriors fan… he’s a professional. The events of this offseason, seen through the eyes of an objective professional, make sense. There’s no indication that he’s unhappy, and no reason to think that he would be. He’ll now be the unquestioned leader of a rising young team. He was just unceremoniously run out of another NBA town a year and a half ago… I really doubt he’d have a problem with his status here.

"no indication that he's unhappy"

Well I hope your right, but there have been rumors that he is not returning Nelson’s or Mullin’s calls. His best friends on the team (Baron, Barnes, Al) have either left or are reportedly asking to be traded. He is a smart guy, but he is loyal to a fault. If he feels like the team is not doing him or his teammates right he could ask for a trade.

I’m really hoping that at most this is just a natural emotional reaction and that he will settle into the logic that you presented but I could imagine that he is pretty upset right now. BTW you are right, this is all rumor and speculation but when there aren’t any solid reports coming out, that’s all we have to talk about. I really hope he is back next season, but nothing would surprise me at this point.

Don't worry about it

Look, Jackson loves the Dubs- they love him. He has a right to enjoy his off season and wait to talk to folks when he gets back. When he is here – he gives his heart and soul to the team. He probably will miss certain guys – but he knows its a bizness and won’t put all the blame on Mullin like GSOM posters do.
My only concern is around playing time, if we are in true rebuilding mode does that mean we hand the reins over to Randolph – say mideason? If we know we won’t likely make the playoffs next season – why not develop Randolph and have SJax come off the bench?? If it looks like this team could make playoffs – then stay with it is at is – if at the mid point we’ve won 15-20 games, may be time to see what the kiddies can really do.

I think you're wrong

I actually think Jax will be a Warrior for the rest of his career, he feels welcomed by the Fans and likes it here, he has cleaned up his act and become a solid leader and I think the Organization has noticed that, I highly doubt he will be traded cuz even tho he had the best year of his career, teams still see him as a troublemaker and wont offer too much value for him…..The only thing he might be upset about is that people are looking at Monta to lead the team now but Captain Jack is staying, after all, who’s got more heart than Jax ????

by Monta08 on Jul 25, 2008 10:53 AM PDT   0 recs

I agree with your points but...

Everything you said here applies equally to J-rich and Baron, and the team didn’t retain them

Jax ain't mad

he’s the Captain and he relishes that role and hella grateful to Nellie for annointing him captain.

Jack will get nasty next year.

Monta will average 28 points a game, Corey will get his 20, Andris will average 16 pts, and 12 rebounds a game, and Belly will be knockin’ down threes(when he’s not tripping over his own feet and crashing into the scoreboard), ...50 wins, playoffs, and still the best looking team in basketball, it will be beautiful.
