Is it just me or is our bench a little crowded now...

Okay, stay with me for a sec...

Last year, our bench had Croshere, Hudson, Pietrus, Barnes, BWright, Belinelli, Kosta, Watson and Buke.

Croshere: Vet, knows his role
Hudson: Injured most the year
Pietrus: Complained but ultimately knew he wasn't a starter and he would get spot minutes
Barnes: Knew he had a bad year and just took the minuted he could get from Nellie
BWright: Rookie. Didn't expect many minutes the way Nellie coached. Still raw and knew it
Belli: Rookie. May have been frustrated but same as Wright.
Kosta: Knows he needs to improve. Kept mouth shut
Watson: Happy to be there
Kelenna: See Watson

Aside from our starting five, only one or two players really had beef if they weren't getting enough playing time. Fine.

This year, a different story. Marcus Williams, BWright, Belli, Kelenna, Morrow, Turiaf, Hendrix, Randolph, Kosta

Williams: May have a personality issue and is eager to prove his worth so will want to play a lot.
BWright: Has shown some improvement and wants to show his worth as well. May stay silent but will secretly brood.
Belli: Knows he can shoot and wants to prove it this season. Again, will prob stay silent but will think Europe is a whole better than Nellie's bench.
Kelenna: Just got a 3 mil contract and got a taste for the NBA now. Doesn't have an attitude, but obviously wants a bigger role.
Morrow: Happy to be here
Turiaf: Great energy guy who got a decent amount of play for the Fakers. Even started over 20 games. Again, great personality but will want his PT.
Hendrix: Knows he needs to improve but will want to battle with Turiaf for that bruiser position
Randolph: Summer league has added to his gargantuan confidence he already has and will want to prove that he can be in the running for ROY. Mucho playing time comes with that.

Now, while I am all for adding tons of depth to the bench and I think a crowded bench is way better than none at all, I just don't see enough minutes out there for all of them. That could create a problem. I really hope it doesn't, but I can see it happening with a few of those egos on the team.

I am hoping Mully is going the Pritchard approach and stockpiling assets to maybe make a splash in a trade somewhere down the line....

What do y'all think?

I would think

That Randolph would at least start in the D-League, given the depth we have at three with Mags and Bukie.

DONT EVEN

mention his name and d-league in the same sentence again! he’s no POB. come on now! he’s too good for that

come on now! he’s too good for that

He’s what 19? You like 19 year olds to come into your work place and tell you how hot they are? Let him earn his time with some grunt work in practice and garbage time then we’ll talk.

IF THEY GOT THE GOODS

than why not. it dont matter how old you are son. if you have game, you play. thats how it is. and he’s not telling the warrior coaches how “hot” he is. he already showed it in the 2 summer leagues. he already walked the walk. if anyone has to earn anything, its that rose kid who went first in the draft and didnt do s h i t in any of the games.

he already showed it in the 2 summer leagues

Then he’s summer league ready. Far from NBA ready as Bellinili showed last year! After a season of practice and garbage time with the big boys we’ll know what Rudolf’s got.

alright

dood got some skills already. They should sents baby rocky and Brandan Wright down to d-league for little. They looks kinda lost last season.

by warriorfan4life on Jul 27, 2008 10:08 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Depends...

I would rather have him dominate the d-league and build his confidence versus being inactive in the nba every night. Nelson said he was committed to playing the young guys but if the more experienced players step up and all of a sudden we got a shot at the 8 spot I don’t think Randolph will be getting a lot of playing time.

by sarangc on Jul 25, 2008 6:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

THAT WOULD JUST

kill his confidence. i’ll tell you this, when you get drafted by an nba team, you wouldnt wanna play in the D league. he’s suppose to dominate but what if he dont???? then that will bring his ass to the ground

by ADOBO on Jul 25, 2008 7:33 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

If he doesn't dominate the D-League...

...what does that tell you about his chances in the real league?

Depending on the person, the D-League can be a good or bad thing. Since he’s young, SKINNY, and plays a stacked position for you guys, he’ll either ride the bench (can kill confidence) or will be sent to the d-league (can kill confidence).

It’s up to the front office to know what sort of kid he is and figure out which way he’ll thrive.

D-League isn’t automatically a bad thing, so don’t look at it that way. It will give him a chance to PLAY, learn defense, and show what he can do when playing his own game. The bench doesn’t allow that.

He’s got talent for sure, but is very young and still raw. Gotta give him time.

NO

You have to remember that every single one of them want to prove they can play BUT none of them, with maybe a few exceptions, have shown that they can.

Unless Nellie stubbornly continues to play one player over another despite that player continually playing bad (i.e. POB, where we obviously could’ve used a center, yet Nellie has to be held at gunpoint before he tries if POB will work), I don’t really see much trouble.

I’m actually hoping that with all these added players, we’ll actually get a CONSISTENT bench we can rely on.

The summer is not over...

There still are “considerations” in the minds and on the board – to enact before the season starts…

by streetballer on Jul 25, 2008 2:39 PM PDT   0 recs

looks very crowded, Nellie

will likely play whoever produces and plays well, in the doghouse: Wright, Bellie, Kosta: Randolph > Wright
Buke > Bellie
Turiaf > Kosta
11 man rotation;
Monta/Williams
Jax/ Buke/ Morrow
Maggette/ Randolph
Al/ Hendrix
Biedrins/ Turiaf

by shootda3 on Jul 25, 2008 2:40 PM PDT   0 recs

I just don't see enough minutes out there for all of them

i hope that our bench players get minutes. i hope that nellie doesnt go back to his 6 man rotation again. going the pritchard route of stockpiling assets wouldnt be so bad

by Rach on Jul 25, 2008 2:40 PM PDT   0 recs

Let’s also not forget, we were UNUSUALLY lucky in terms of injuries last year. Depth is always a good thing.

by onlxn on Jul 25, 2008 2:54 PM PDT   0 recs

Wow...

that’s a good problem to have. I can see Nellie staying up at night trying to figure out how he’s going to distribute the minutes.

by joestar on Jul 25, 2008 2:57 PM PDT   0 recs

What do y'all think?

I thought you’d never ask! They all get paid to be here and shut up. Sitting on the bench is part of learning when you are young or part of being average if you are older. They can have some great practices with this group which should translate to decent play. It’s not a team I’d put together but it should be fine.

A crowded bench is a good thing.

If they don’t play well then they don’t play and there’s someone sitting on the bench waiting for their chance to prove themselves.

by DubsFanByTheZoo on Jul 25, 2008 3:12 PM PDT   0 recs

Yeah, the Spurs bench is crowded and that seems to work for them.

by Nellieball on Jul 25, 2008 3:19 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Way too early to pencil in anyone or make calls about Hendrix, Randolph, Wright.

Kosta and Belinelli haven’t shown me that they belong in the league. If Belinelli can take some pointguardish minutes, he may play some. If not, he’s toast.

I’d not be surprised to see Harrington traded with another warm body for a single player.

by jae on Jul 25, 2008 3:15 PM PDT   0 recs

it is very crowded

but you have to remember, some are going to suck and some are going to be good. I am not sold on brandan and belinelli, i don’t think brandan is ready for the nba. i think anthony randolph, buke, and turiaf will make the rotation, everyone else is a huge question mark.

by Foulacy on Jul 25, 2008 3:18 PM PDT   0 recs

kosta

kosta iz back n euro and i dont tink hendrix will play that much and morrow. plus randolph will get time but probely start at bakersfield

by thomasjustyn on Jul 25, 2008 3:42 PM PDT   0 recs

definitely a crowded bench

but this bench is DEEP

its a good problem to have. nelly wont play his 6 man rotation, because he wont have to. the biggest problem i see is the SG and SF spot.

SG: Jackson, Belinelli, Morrow + maggette, monta, and Azubuike will all play here too
SF: Maggette, Buike, and Randolph + jackson for when someone else is playing SG

morrows obviously never gonna play but my biggest concerns are wit marco and randolph. both are going to want to play and both probably deserve to play…but theyre not gonna be able to start in front of steven jackson or corey maggete

None the less, we should all be pumped up for this “crowded” bench problem we have…this team is going to be a good TEAM…no true superstars as of yet but filled with a bunch of great players

by 3Kings650 on Jul 25, 2008 3:58 PM PDT   0 recs

so who gets traded then?

7guy and in 2 spots.

by Rach on Jul 25, 2008 4:29 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Crowded is good!!!!

I would rather have a crowded bench then a depleted one, BW better tart performing more. If he does not want to get bumped by AR. Marco better start hitting his shots if he does not want to gt bumped by Morrow, the gu can hoot the lights out…

by DubsFanFromChi-town on Jul 25, 2008 4:11 PM PDT   0 recs

Players Dictate Their Minutes With Their Play On the Floor

Especially with Nellie who will go with any matchup he think he can exploit at any time. I like the bench because we have a combination of shooters, bruisers, tall, short, etc.

by terryteagle on Jul 25, 2008 4:29 PM PDT   0 recs

Would YOU?...

rather have a crowded deep bench or at short one?
if we have injuries im glad we have some players to fill in right away.

by warriors1 on Jul 25, 2008 4:32 PM PDT   0 recs

last year our bench sucked

this year our bench is basically the same players who will have improved

minus the old ass weak fools

adding a solid point that we have needed for so long.

yes it is just you

by Agent Zero on Jul 25, 2008 5:37 PM PDT   0 recs

last year we also

were saying how good our bench was at the beginning of the year but our bench was horrible IMO last year. and one of our best bench players Pietrus who wasn’t that good is gone.

by Agent Zero on Jul 25, 2008 5:39 PM PDT   0 recs

a depth chart does NOT = depth

in addition to the many fine points above, there is no such thing as too much talent & while things look “set” there is still Aug, Training Camp, etc. – wouldn’t be
surprised to see another move or three …

There is no depth until it is proven – not to us, to Nelson:

Proven NBA talent: Ellis, Jackson, Maggette, Harrington, Beidrins, Turiaf, & KAz = 7 players Nelson has confidence in what they’ll do on the court and will play

UNproven: Wright, CJ, Williams, Randolph, & Hendrix, (Morrow? is he signed?)
- out of those 5 we need TWO to step up and contribute, preferably one of the PGs and one of the forwards, which would give Nelson 9 players in rotation. Very few NBA teams have a 10 man rotation in meaningful minutes.

Waiting to be relocated (imo) – Belinelli, Kosta
Some would add Harrington here, I would not – we do NOT have enough proven depth in the forwards to lose him without replacing him with another big (unless we’re tanking the season for the lottery). Maybe as jae mentioned there is a 2-for-1 in the future involving Harrington, but if so that 1 better be a legit PF if we have ANY hope of ‘08 playoffs

by hardcore on Jul 25, 2008 6:11 PM PDT   0 recs

a crowded bench is a good bench.

better than a nonexistant bench.

by dso on Jul 25, 2008 7:01 PM PDT   0 recs

trade a bunch of them for a star!!!!

maybe we can pull off a kupchak… if not, it’s not really a bad thing though, competition means more energy because everybody likes pt which means more wins. plus if we have any injuries, knock on wood…

by thedagger on Jul 25, 2008 7:34 PM PDT   0 recs

All I know is we were making a lot of excuses for Nelson, saying that he had no bench last season (even though I think if he would have played Wright or Belinelli earlier in the season they could have been able to contribute). This year we’ll see if he couldn’t play his bench or if he was too stubborn to.

by belilaugh on Jul 25, 2008 8:59 PM PDT   0 recs

This is so negative and a lot of it is wrong. Anthony Randolph does not have a “gargantuan confidence ” after every summer league game he talked about what he needs to improve on. Wright was fine all year character wise, he even said that he accepted that he was a rookie and would not play much. He will have more minutes this year and he knows that because Nelson said it so why would he be upset? You are saying that it is a burden now that we have a lot of young talented players on the team. This is ridiculous.

by clauser6422 on Jul 26, 2008 1:50 AM PDT   0 recs

stockpiling for a trade

this of course would only work if:

1. Josh Smith wanted out of Atlanta and demanded a trade.
2. Josh Smith wanted to play for the W’s and forced Hawks management to negotiate with Mullin.

Al Harrington, Bradnan Wright, Marco Bellinelli, and Kosta Perovic
for
Josh Smith + 2nd rounder.

Smith’s contract $12mil x 5 years with player ETO

The Hawks need to fill roster spots. They add 3 players: a solid vet, two 2nd year 1st rounders with (questionable) potential. And a 3rd string Eastern Conference center.
They lose, of course, Josh Smith.

The W’s lose a few guys who might work out or not. They gain another chance at the playoffs.

by miguelito on Jul 26, 2008 5:03 AM PDT   0 recs

It is going to be interesting but here is one thing we know, Kosta is gone. So looking at our team here is what it looks like:

Monta / Williams / CJ
Jackson / Belli / Morrow
Maggette / Buike / Randolph
Harrington / Wright / Hendrix
Beidrins(?) / Turiaf

If I remember right only 12 can suit up at a given time so the obvious choices to not suit is Hendrix and Morrow. Hendrix has a good possibility of going to the D-League first but we may want to keep him up so that for teams with bruisers he is available. Randolph will not get sent down unless something drastic happens and his wings come off and he falls from grace. Morrow will not sniff the court.

At some time this year it will be decided who gets dealt and the first to go looks to be Harrington. With Randolph coming with the shooters touch and Morrow some extra 3 pointers plus Hendrix to Bang down low, Harrington has got to go. Randolph will go to the 4 to mess things up every now and again but be a 3 most of the time. And if Beli does not beat out Morrow you might even see them packaged together for a future first rounder, young talent, or a solid vet.

Lastly CJ could very well be out of GS if the warriors feel they don’t need him. Monta needs to step up and Marcus most definitely be better than advertised for that to happen. But i do remember that the coaches one knock on CJ during summer league was his inability to run the team like a true point. This makes him a less electrifying Monta.

So really we could see a lot happen in one year. I am excited and hop that we do well enough where we don’t need to make deals.

The illusion and meaninglessness of the "depth chart"

So post after post puts together Warrior depth charts as if they really run a 5 position lineup. This gives the illusion that some guys might play who will not likely play.

Monta and Williams will presumably get most, if not all of the PG minutes.

SF and SG are not terribly different positions in the the modern NBA. As it stands, there’s three guys who will see the majority of the minutes there in Jackson, Maggette and Azubuike. I expect there will be lineups with all three on the court at the expense of a big man. (I expect this is more likely than Belinelli getting reliable minutes). Anything beyond this is most likely going to go to Monta shifting back to the 2. Belinelli may be the #2 off guard on that chart, but I don’t think that means he ever gets more than garbage time unless he can show some ability to handle point-guardish duties.

The distinction between PF and C are mostly artificial as well. One or two of the lot will play at a time. It’s tougher to determine which ones it will be, as we haven’t seen what Nelson thinks of Turiaf or Hendrix or whether or not he’s actually willing to play Wright. Listing Wright as the #2 PF may indicate that he’ll play a bunch, but he could also be buried behind Turiaf, Harrington and Biedrins for less than 96 minutes worth of playing time.

by jae on Jul 26, 2008 1:43 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs
