About Fan Posts

Guys, gals, and whatever else there is,

Do you now see the ridiculousness of posting something about Anthony Morrow 3 times? Notice how this is a little frustrating for the admins who try to keep the site fresh with multiple topics?

Do we really need 3 fan posts about Anthony Morrow? This doesn't just apply to these Morrow posts either. We've hidden multiple posts about "projected lineups" or "filling out the final spots of the roster" - see how they're similar.

Here's a good rule of thumb because it's not just up to the admins to keep the content fresh it's also up to you: when you see a fan post that has a similar topic - it may not be identical - post a comment with your thoughts in there. Trust me, if people are interested enough, they'll read it. And if it's really important to you, rec the other person's post to get it into the recommended section - people read and comment on those more often.

Let's keep the fan post section tidy. If you think your "fan post" can be put as a comment in another similar fan post, please do that. It'll make the site better. And if your fan post has trouble coming up with the minimum word count, try putting your own opinions in the fan post - it's really not that hard to write the minimum amount.

Thanks.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

question

there are only so many players on the team. Who else are we supposed to write about? Why delete fanposts?

by bayareaballa on Jul 26, 2008 9:58 AM PDT   0 recs

Feel free to write about them in the comments of similar fan posts. Unless you’re writing something substantially different about the same player, then post your thoughts as comments.

So...

Did you delete a Anthony Morrow Fanpost? Because I still see 3 Morrow fanposts below your post. Can those be combined?

by Eggman on Jul 26, 2008 10:01 AM PDT   0 recs

My point exactly

The point of showing the 3 Anthony Morrow fan posts together is to show everyone that these 3 can be combined.

And soon they will.

I don’t mean to single out of those 3 GSOMers because there are many people who do the same thing, but it makes for a good example.

by Fantasy Junkie on Jul 26, 2008 10:07 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Also-- FanShots + Comments

Use FanShots if you just want to post a quick link, quote, video, thought, etc. FanPosts are intended to be substantive, well-researched, and high quality. If you’re the slightest bit worried that your FanPost isn’t good enough and it’s going to be hidden than just post a comment or FanShot instead.

No more warnings. All non compliant FanPosts will be hidden from now on. Like FJ was hinting at- this is not that hard.

Your "Al" post read like this...
I just signed up and been reading some of peoples comments since yesterday. i do not understand why he gets so much hate. i thought you guys are warrior fans? i know last season was bad for him but give him a break. he plays out of position (at center) which causes him to spend most of his energy guarding guys bigger than him which is not an easy thing to do and then you ask him to produce at the other end. i personally would prefer big al at small forward. GIVE THE GUY SOME LOVE PEOPLE. i hope the same thing doesnt happen to monta when he starts stinking up the point guard position

Wow… there’s so much discussion in that deleted post… Give Al some love… Why are we hating … “i thought you guys are warrior fans?”.... and “I Hope… blah blah blah!

how bout a little promotion for good fanposts to the front page

you know, there hasn’t been a lot of front page activity lately, and i know you all are busy, but it could be a good reward for someone who has created a great fan post to be promoted to front page. i know atma has done that a lot in the past, and maybe fanshots would be a good place for noobs to get started with text, it doesn’t just have to be multimedia right?

"We're Menudo," -BB

by eshock on Jul 26, 2008 3:37 PM PDT   0 recs

Actually

I’m not a fan of promoting FanPosts from the community to the front page. Neither FJ or I have done that in over in year. I don’t like doing that because:
1) it gets confusing who is actually a GSoM writer and who is not
2) we’re in some sense endorsing the person whose diary we promote and responsible for their actions and the way they treat people on the site. Someone might write a great piece of work, but be completely unprofessional and not so “Unstoppable Baby” to other GSoM community members. We learned the hard way about that in past and got burned.
3) at the end of the day the front page hosts our (founders) blog with our analysis, ideas, and opinions. With too many voices it gets a little schizophrenic.

When we have time we give shout outs to top FanPosts/ Diaries in our main blog articles, but putting them on the front page just isn’t something we do here.

An outside opinion

I see this problem on Blazers Edge and here more than any other SBN basketball site mostly because BE and GSOM have the 2 highest streams of traffic. Sometimes you see it on Blog a Bull or Sactown Royalty, but it’s less rare, in part because the posters who post on BAB and StR aren’t as new to the site and have been posting a long time, for the most part, and in part, there isn’t a ton of new traffic that wasn’t there, say, 3 months ago.

The Warriors have so many fans, and as GSOM keeps blowing up, and it will, this I imagine will continue to be an issue. Bluntly put, GSOm has 8 admins, and most sites have 2 or 3 at the most, around SBN. Matt, at BAB, is probably the rare exception, but if you’ve ever read BAB, and I have many times, there isn’t much for Matt to mod other than the comments. But to that end, Matt doesn’t control every thing every poster does, and his poster’s show good taste in what they try to post. They tend to know the rules because so many already know what’s in good taste and what isn’t. In short, there are people who understand what Matt’s trying to do, for the most part, but there are people who don’t.

Personally I think GSOM is hard to read because of the double & triple subject’s that are constantly duplicated. I try to read what goes on here, but if there are 100 comments, and only 15 I find personally helpful, it’s hard for me to take it very seriously. I have a similar problem with Blazers Edge also because of the high traffic. This is of course varied on the topics and the posters who don’t post frequently, but take the time to post something they feel is interested. That is the lone exception. Every blog has this type of poster.

Either way, and I hope people around here don’t take it personally, I come to GSOM for the art, to check out a hot topic, and hope that if I do chat wtih someone, and I have, that the knowledge was worth the time. (This isn’t a criticism, but as much the folly and peril of dealing with a high traffic site such as this.) I’m not a Dubs fan so I don’t need to come here that often. But when I do it’s a chore to figure out what’s going on on the fanpost end because of the amount of duplication. My opinion, as a Kings fan, and frequent SBN poster.

i can understand getting annoyed at similar looking posts, and the Anthony Morrow is just one example of a recurring problem

but A-Mo’s posts were posted chronologically, each in a manner that showed a change in events of the player that in some way impacted either our summer league team or our current roster.

i also realize that as the population of anything increases, the ratio of stupid:intelligence increases strongly in stupid’s favor. That being said, fan posts often carry this site when things are slow, and even if they’re not the brightest of posts, it allows for more intelligent posters to share their views in an informative, if not slightly sardonic, manner.

in other words, as much as i understand the need to filter out stupidity, i also think fanposts should be getting a bit more recognition from the admins (though i did note FJ’s recognition of fanposts in one of his early summer posts). It’s a lot better than negligence or a few bitter sentences.

by dso on Jul 27, 2008 12:13 AM PDT   0 recs

similar fanposts

i guess it could get annoying to see 3 A.Morrow fanposts if you let it get to you. i don’t mind seeing it really. in fact, i prefer 3 smaller similar threads than 1 thread with 150+ replies branching off into a bunch different tangents, digressions, and side arguments that i end up hitting ‘Z’ through a lot of it anyways. sometimes threads sprout 1 on 1 arguements that dominate the thread and goes so off topic that you have a hard time finding the spot that you wanna jump in. and when you do jump in, your 2cents will probably get lost in the shuffle and get Z’ed over anyway.

It’s definitely admirable that the webmasters wanna keep the site clean and organized. But this is a sports blog after all. Not a round table discussion at an ivy league university. Three threads on Anthony Morrow won’t dilute the site. Threads will sink into oblivion by natural selection.

I pray i never have to use a gun again...

...unless i'm at a strip club parking lot...

...and somebody tries to run me over with their car...

...But how often does that happen??

I care about the site. I care about the quality of the site. I care about the details. I care about making this site better. Since I don’t sit monitoring GSOM all day long (because I have a life and a real job) I want the members of this community to also care about the quality of the site and respect what will make this site better. It takes cooperation from everyone.

If you don’t understand why it’s important that the fan posts section only has important things, then maybe this isn’t the place for you.

You’ve spent more time moaning and groaning since you joined GSoM last week than you have contributed fool. Questioning Warrior Fans and complaining about posts with 2-3 sentences and a link that says “Go warriors Yay !”50 times. You should see the e-mails I get from old school GSoMers saying whats up with the site? It’s a bitch fest full of babies.

Yea I’ll give it up 2 the new schoolers adding new flavor of knowledge and their right 2 free opinion but dude you and your middle school friends are making this site look like Daddy day care. Start yur own website and cry over there!

Very hip and elegant.

I wish we could replace our current logo/logotype/masthead, which resembles the identity for a bad ‘80s computer repair store in Milpitas, with something equally inspired … possibly involving Tony.psd’s rad artwork?

COMMENT MINIMUM

hey admins,

is there any way to have a comment minimum before you can post a fanpost. haha i realize i just joined not long ago and posted a few fanposts, but id like to think mine are more substantiated than some of the ones i’ve seen. normally these posts are written by people who have just registered and then create a 50 word fanpost that do not add anything new to these boards.
i’d be happy to help with QA/QC if necessary haha. could we mark posts as “candidates for speedy deletion” like in wikipedia? i realize its hard to monitor these boards often as we are all busy and hopefully we have lives outside of GSoM. keep up the great work though!

Don’t sweat it, the new posters bring energy and often stick around and learn to say something useful. It’s like walking down a city street, you see all types( can we get some more hot women on here?) forgot my train of thought . oh yeah, new posters, educate them don’t drive them away.

Why?

This was the message you were sent:

Please move your recent FanPost to a FANSHOT > LINK. FanPosts are intended to be lengthy, substantive, and well-researched. Use FanShots for quick hits like this one. Thanks! —-—-—-—-—-——“Clips sign Ricky Davis http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3508759 I was surfing through the clippers fansite and found that they just signed Ricky Davis to a 2 year deal worth 4.7 mil. Do you guys think this is a good move for them, and do we have to be worried? I think this makes them much more athletic, and gives BD a good scoring option to dish to. I dunno

Too many old dudes on one squad man, camby, cat mobley, rick davis? I’m starting to kinda feel bad for BD, as much as I bleed the dubs, I want him to have a good end to his career for what he did for us in the ‘06-’07 season.

BD

will be fine. He’ll still get his numbers, still get to the hoop. I actually sense them competing in the West. We still have more firepower, but they’re not the worst team in the West. Ricky Davis will do well with BD getting him the rock

The Real Problem

Let’s just be real about the problem here. GSoM is not a site, SB Nation is the site, GSoM is simply the guys who fill in the squares for the Warriors page on SB Nation. As a result, they’ve been forced into this new ugly ass template which does not allow you to see multiple diaries/fanposts, only the few recent ones, so they had to start being soupnazi’s about the posts because there’s only so much room. Problem is, the loyal fans are used to the old format, you can’t blame that on the fans it will take them a long time to transition if they can ever do it at all.

As Dave Chappelle once said, tough break baby, always FUBU!
