Warriors Sign Andris Biedrins
ESPN is reporting its sources confirm that Beans is en route to a 6 year deal valued at ~$63MM. The 5th year is reportedly a player option.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3507385
Figured I'd go ahead and get the discussion started with an official post. I'll remove the (?) when the Warriors confirm.
So we know one thing: signing Beans significantly limits our options for acquiring new players. We're now officially over the salary cap.
Anyone want to weigh in on what this means to our options for landing a big time RFA?
UPDATE (FJ): Twisted Lister posted this in a recent fanpost, "Biedrins is locked up!":
Well done, Mully!
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/07/27/SPO0120GQU.DTL&tsp=1
This solidifies the make-up of the Warriors for the next five seasons. I'm very happy they took care of business & didn't let the Euro-League BS rumors become a big factor.
Any more moves up Mullin & Nelson's sleeves? Do they trade Harrington or keep him or are they done for the off-season?
Thoughts?

WHY???
see, why do you guys have to erase the first biedrins post and put this one up? there were a lot of comments on the other one already.

Huh?
I didn’t erase anything, and as far as I know I was the first to put this up so I don’t see how any other post could have more comments. I mean, there are other Andris posts live but not ones specific to him getting signed…

warriors are done with signings this offseason. Matching Azubuike was officially their last move, after that, extending the contracts of Ellis and Beidrins were the only moves left. Signing Morrow doesn’t count because that only guarantees him to training camp.

The contract's for $63 million.
It seems reasonable, considering we were expecting to sign him for about $10 million a year. Here’s to another 6 productive years with Andris as GS’s starting center. Welcome back, AB!

Long time reader here
rarely a poster.. i love reading EVERYONE’S take on our beloved dubs on this blog site.. i check the site multiple times a day religiously. That being said, it’s like Nazi Germany here with how posts are to be handled and how they’re always deleted. I was reading from that other ANDRIS post that had roughly 100 comments and that’s gone too.
I’m glad we retained Andris, as big men are such a commodity in the league, especially in the west with 10 or so powerhouse teams.
Is anyone here worried about a slide in Andris’ numbers and production this year. I’ve been watching clips and highlights af Andris from the last 2 seasons and it seems that he got a lot of baskets from the pick and roll with Boomdizzle and from Baron attracting so much of the defense’s attention. Or maybe his stats will improve because everyone has to contribute to fill the hole baron left, offensively and defensively? Thoughts, opinions?

eh,
people suck at checking whether someone has already posted the same diary they’re about to post.
Also, the diary they deleted with the comments had like one sentence w/ the link and then filler etc. The mods prefer more substantive diaries (such as this one). At least we finally have a rec system. I wish people used recs more carefully and didn’t rec diaries that suck.

That's true
And, I’m more-or-less used to way things go around here now. I’ve never been to blog where people are called out so frequently (and I’m not talking about the mods), but that’s just the way GSOM is. I love this blog, but, at the same time, it’s pretty a harsh place. If someone posts a weak fan post, like ten people call the poster an idiot. That’s just how it is here.
Over a Athletics Nation people tend to be a little more tactful, but poorly conceived fan posts are decried their as well. However, if you want to see the alternative, go to a Raiders blog! I love the Nation, but WOW! There’s some crazy, illiterate diatribes floating around Raider’s blogs.

Don't like the admins interfering with free speech of W's fans
Not that it’s guaranteed since the site belongs to the powers that be, but what they don’t realize is this has become somewhat of a community for W’s fans, and deleting the speech of W’s fans effectively shuts them up on the internet until someone else creates a better site.
If they don’t want ppl posting multiple threads of the same topic, they should just change to layout and organization of the site to encourage posters post correctly. C’mon use a little creativity besides threats. There will still be some idiots who still won’t get it, but at least you won’t have the admins “regulating” posts, which saves them time to actually add content themselves. What is this place coming to? I suspect that Chris Cohan is the owner of the GSoM site.

You still don't need two posts for the same thing.
I don’t think changing the layout is as easy as you suggest. Although they already did, twice if i’m not mistaken. The recommendation button is great for weeding through the CRAP that gets posted nowadays.
Funny, a year ago people were crying for a mod to weed out and delete bad posts/diaries. We got one, booted him from the site and are now back to where we were a year ago.

Who said changing the layout was easy? But they need to work on a format the works better than this. Other sites are able to accomplish this, so why not GSoM? Good on content, but they could use some help on the technical side.
I haven’t seen many sites where ppl complained as much as they have here, which indicates that something is obviously problematic. Do you really see most sites where admins/mods encroach on postings as much as this one and ppl complain as much as they do? As long as posters aren’t abusive or spamming, I don’t see why posters should be put through CRAP policies like deleting a thread with 100+ posts. That’s pathetic for an Internet site.

That's a little over the top
deleting the speech of W’s fans effectively shuts them up on the internet until someone else creates a better site.
No, it just shuts them up here. Even if the right to free speech applied to restrictions besides the government, deleting conversations here doesn’t prevent anyone from saying whatever they want somewhere else.
I know it’s a web phenomenon that people feel like they can bellyache like paying customers about things that are free, but this takes it one step further… claiming eminent domain of an audience over someone else’s free site!
You aren’t ENTITLED to squat here. I’m thankful the GSOM guys have made this site.

You must be a law student or attorney. So are you?
Only a law student or attorney is capable of taking the literal definition of the minutia, obfuscating the primary point of the post. Eminent domain, give me a break! Who’s claiming free speech? I’m saying that they shouldn’t manipulate posts like they’re doing if they want to maintain a relevant site for the W’s community. See the prior Nazi comments. Ppl will walk otherwise. If you want to talk about hyperbole, why don’t you look whine about that Nazi comment? I’ll bring your cheese in a moment.
So please get off your mental masterbation and stop complaining about other people’s complaints. I suspect your next post will analyze this statement further. Proceed…
By the way, I still say that GSoM needs to make changes or will become less relevant over time except for asinine posters like achiappanza who equate everything to legal concepts. You’ll see…

I’ve decided that despite the snark, there’s a genuine question in there.
“Eminent domain,” while a legal term, is well-known to anyone who was a fan of Oakland sports in the ‘80s. Do a search on “eminent domain raiders” and catch yourself up.
Most likely, you’re just too young to have been there. But I could be wrong. After all, you pegged me for a lawyer and that ain’t right.

I'm glad he's back, but I'm not too sure about the money
I guess it’s just me, but I’m still under the impression that his improvement is due to the Nelson system and, as someone has brought up, Baron’s playmaking. He’s definitely got energy and knows how to finish, but his lack of shooting range/free throw skill and disappointing defensive numbers are still a concern. Out of all the signings this month, this is the one whose salary I’m worried about simply because he’ll be making Monta/J-Rich/Maggette money.
But hey, the guy’s still young and we need a decent center, so hopefully the improvement continues—just like Monta playing point, we’ll just have to wait and see if the price for Biedrins is worth it.

We were already over the cap.
We were pretty much already done with signings. This didnt change any of that. Glad they got it wrapped up.
Only moves left will be if they find the right deal for Al.
We were never rerally in the RFA market ever since the Maggette signing. Even then most players will be matched by their original team, so they were most likely never coming here.

Thanks for merging the articles, give us one good place to talk about this signing.
Jae, since your the resident cap man, any idea how they structured the deals. How close they put themselves up to the lux cap. (Even though its not a too much of a big deal at this point, since lux cap in basketball is applied at the end of the season, instead of the start) But wondering, still where they may stand.
by The Golden One on Jul 27, 2008 11:11 PM PDT 0 recs
If they structured the deals with standard raises factored in, we’re about $4mil shy of the lux tax, which is plenty of room to operate with if there’s need to sign another player or two at the vet min or need some working room in a trade.
If they ‘frontloaded’ to the degrees possible for Monta and/or Biedrins, they’re within a couple 100k of the lux tax.
Best reports I’ve seen indicate the former. While I’d like to see them front load to some degree as it makes things easier in the future, there’s business and basketball reasons for not doing this.

That's an awful lot of money for a player with limited skills IMHO
Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy, but his skills are utilized at pretty much his full potential under Nellie’s system. He’s a pink and slash to the hoop kind of guy. He gets a lot of put backs and is somehow left alone on the weakside when BD or Jacks would drive and draw the defense. Although his free throw shooting is improving, I don’t see him shooting a much better percentage than he is now. Plus, his shooting range is really limited. I really hope that he develops his post game.
Let’s hope he earns that money…I’m really pullin for him, really. Just my 2 cents.
We Believe!!!

Long as he keeps statying within his abilities.
He is worth the money in my eyes. It’s rare to find an athletic 7 footer with the abilities he does have and knows how to stay in his limits. We have enough shooters and people that want to shoot all the time. Having an effective player that only takes shots when he knows he can make it (highest fg% in the league) really works well for this team. So for our team I believe it was a really good deal. If he waited for next year when he was a unrestricted free agent. Many teams would have lined up to pay even more for him, just because he is rare in the nba these days.

Not a bad contract... Biedrins is well worth it.
I’m very happy with the signing. Locking up Biedrins and Ellis for the next 6 years to reasonable deals is a way to build a great future.
People forget how young Biedrins because he has been so productive/consistent the past two years. He has tons of potential left and to lock up a big man with GREAT HANDS after have Damp and Foyle for 10 million and change a year is a steal.

BEFORE U B*@#H about 10.5 million for a Center in the NBA, consider the following:
Player Age Pts/ Reb/ Bs 2008 Salary (millions) (new contract #’s: )
Biedrins, A.(22) 10.5/ 9.8/ 1.2 $10.5 *Blatche, A. (21) 7.5/ 5.2/ 1.4 $2.8Blount, M. (32) 8.4/ 3.8/ 0.5 $7.9

Jefferson, Al (23) 21/ 11.1/ 1.5 $2.4
Kaman, C. (26) 15.7/ 12.7/ 2.8 $12Milicic, D. (23) 7.2/ 6.1/ 1.6 $6.5Miller, B. (31) 13.4/ 9.5/ 1 $10.5
Ming, Yao (27) 22/ 10.8/ 2 $13.8Mohammed, N.(30) 7.8/ 6/ 0.7 $5.6Nesterovic, R. (32) 7.8/ 4.8/ 0.7 $7.8Noah, J. (23) 6.6/ 5.6/ 0.9 $2.1O’Neal, J. (29) 13.6/ 6.7/ 2.1 $19.7!!!O’Neal, S. (33) 13.6/ 9.1/ 1.4 $20!!!
Oden, Greg (23) 15/ 12/ 2 (maybe) $4.6
Okur, M. (29) 14.5/ 7.7/ 0.4 $9Perkins, K. (23) 6.9/ 6.1/ 1.5 $4.5Przybilla, J. (28) 4.8/ 8.4/ 1.2 $5.6Thomas, K. (35) 6.3/ 7.2/ 0.8 $8.1Wallace, Ben (33) 4.8/ 8.4/ 1.6 $15.5
I struck through the names that just don’t come close to AB value;
u see any equivalent (or greater) production that young? D. Howard/ Bogut/ Bynum/ Chandler/ Al Jefferson/ maybe Greg Oden- each will be/ have been paid more after 3rd/4th year extension
u see any aging players commanding around $10.5 or more- Camby/ Dalembert/ Dampier/ Big Z/ Kaman/ Miller/ Ming/ Shaq/ J. O’neal/ Okur/ Wallace
What 10.5 million pays for:
1. 11th leading rebounder in the League
2. Rebounds per 48: 1. D. Howard 18 2. Camby 18 3. Biedrins 17.2
3. FG% 1. A Biedrins 63% 2. T. Chandler 62%
My point: excellent signing, perhaps a bit much, but worth every penny.
There is only about one good center per draft and one great one every 3-4 years.
AB is NOT great.
AB is good. Right now 7th Center in the League (DH, YM, SO, GO, TC, MC, then AB)
We got him at a fair price w/ time and security to grow.
If he’s putting up 35 min/ 15 pts/ 12 reb/ & 2 Blcks by 2010-11 we got a steal!!!
by NaturalBornBaller on Jul 28, 2008 12:24 AM PDT 1 recs
very nice post
i, too, had my doubts about paying too much for biedrins, but you pretty much put my worries to rest… i disagree that he is the 7th center in the league, but i very much agree that the growing aspect cannot be overlooked. the guy is 22 years old. barring any sort of injury, virtually every good nba player with a drive to get better (i believe AB is easily one of those guys), get better between the ages of 22 and 28. so the warriors had to lock him up long term now,
i say the steal of that list is dwight howard (6 mil), but he will be making something like 16-17 after next year i think (contract extension already signed).

Thanks for that info.
My first reaction was a sigh of relief after seeing that AB was re-signed by the Warriors. It was peace of mind for me that we locked up our young center for years to come. The second was hmmm… that’s a lotta money and we probably overpaid him a little. Still, there was the strength of the Euro in addition to other teams offering S&T deals. I have no doubt AB will get better and think he’ll get more touches with Monta at PG. I dunno. Just a gut feeling as I think Monta will pass more than jack up the 3-ball.

Perfect deal
http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9611
This is an absolutely perfect contract – he got what he wants and, from what I’m told, the Warriors will be in good shape with their cap flexibility in the future once Al’s deal mercifully comes to an end. The Warriors have young depth that they can develop and they have a core of guys locked in for the foreseeable future that are proven contributors – and you still have some money left to play with under the tax threshold.
Plus, AB will continue to develop. I know that some may feel that the money is a bit much since he has no offensive game, but .. (I don’t say this often because of journalistic integrity and stuff like that) .. but I believe in Biedrins. After practices, I’ve seen him work on his game for an additional 45 minutes, specifically focusing on things like pick-and-rolls and free-throw shooting.
Any objective observer of the Warriors over the past two seasons should be able to see the tremendous growth he’s shown in both aspects of his game. He needs to keep working on being an off-ball scorer, but also needs to now show that he has some individual skills as well (believe it or not – I’ve seen AB sink 15-footers in practice, but I don’t know if he’ll EVER take one in a game!).
Anyway, I’ll have more on the Warriors’ offseason on Tuesday afternoon .. we’re working on grading every team’s offseason at HOOPSWORLD this week, and I’m due up on Tuesday afternoon with the Warriors’ grades.

haha, but nice post pree, as usual. i haven’t addressed you personally before, but just wanted to let you know that i (and i’m sure many others here) really enjoy proper/professional journalistic postings/articles from a dubz fan.
thanks and keep us updated!

Eh
It’s not like they were BEAUTIFUL shots, but he hits them. They looked a lot like his free-throws: sometimes, they’re pretty nice, but other times, you wonder how the hell they go in.
And you’re welcome – I’m just doing my job. Interacting with you guys here and on the HOOPSWORLD boards (which died but are back now), is what keeps me sane. Getting the same stuff from the team gets boring, so you cats keep me refreshed! So thank YOU!

Excellent Signing
This deal is a bit better than what I had expected. If AB does go on the market after the fifth year, it’s essentially a 5yr/$52mil deal. A tad better than the 5yr/$55mil I was expecting. Mully is definitely following through on the W’s offseason priorities.
1- Resigning AB and M-8-E#2- Signing a player to make up for Boom’s scoring (Maggette)
#2b- Resigning Bookie
#3- Signing a PG (Williams)
#4- Signing a big man who can rebound (Turiaf + Hendrix) 5 on my personal priority list would be to trade “Clueless” Al. I don’t care if it’s just getting future draft picks in return, but getting rid of his salary and inconsistency would be a major plus. There are enough shooters and rebounders on the roster now to make Harrington expendable.
BTW, my profile picture is AB signing my Warriors t-shirt, not his new contract….. I am so ready for the upcoming season. Welcome to a new era of Warrior basketball, fellas!!!

Give Al A Break
Let’s take it a little easy on Al. I think he is a very good player and has a very unique skill set for a man his size. It just hasn’t worked out so well for him in Oakland. I think Nelson expected more from him in the area of rebounding and defense and the inconsistency in his shot has lead to limited playing time. For most teams, Al would be a starter.
I’d like to see him traded for a player that could put this team over the top and into the playoffs and also send him to a team where he can thrive but I wouldn’t be willing to give him up for nothing. He still has a role on this team and if he plays the way we all know he can, he will have a huge impact in the upcoming season. I think we as Warrior fans can’t throw in the towel on Harrington just yet. I am sure Mullin is looking at trade options for not just Al but just about anyone on the team. No one is untouchable. But don’t expect Mullin to toss away a valuable asset in Al Harrington without getting equal or better value in return making the team better.

I Prefer Al Break Something
Look, NBA, I don’t believe that my negative opinion of Al somehow contributes to some negative karma that will prevent the Warriors from winning games. And I don’t think any GM’s in the league are at all concerned with my opinion. I don’t think me voicing my honest opinion of Al does anything other than make me feel better. Al is 6’9” and rebounds like he’s Webster, he’s not a very motivated defender, to put it nicely, and for all his supposed skills, is not a good ball handler, doesn’t try to get to the hoop and is not a good passer. He is a very good shooter for his size and helps space the floor. I don’t think he’s worth the money, though, for that one skill and he’s going to be taking time away from Randolph, Wright and Turiaf. Although he’s only 28, this is his 10th season in the league. What you see is what you get. Of course I’d like to see Mully get as much back as possible for Harrington. Who wouldn’t? But at this point, I’d rather see him traded sooner than later. I can’t take anymore boneheaded plays when Randolph and Wright are sitting on the bench.

One positive you get with Al is experience. Rudolph and Wright on the court will raise the bonehead plays to hew heights, better on the bench till they get some seasoning. Wright should be close to game ready by now, Maybe Rudolph by next year?
I wouldn’t mind trading Al but I want something better in return, I wouldn’t do it just to watch rooks play, I can see that in college ball!

This year seems like its gonna be really experimental, might as well let the rookies get some burn

EXPERIENCED BONEHEAD
You’re right, they shouldn’t just trade Al so the rookies can play, but that is one of a few reasons. He’s overpriced and would be taking minutes from other players besides the rooks. Besides, I’d rather see the rooks make a mistake than a 10 year vet, because there is a chance that they might learn from that mistake.
