Losing My Credibility? Zach Randolph .. gulp ..
Alright .. so .. I can't believe I'm about to do this .. but let me preface this with the following:
1) I went to the Gnarls Barkley tonight in concert and that does tend to get your mind to wander, especially with that funky rendition of "Transformer" that wasn't as upbeat as I liked ..
2) It's 3:10 AM as I write this and I'm fully hopped up on the "adultified" beverages that presented themselves at the concert ..
3) It's 3:10 AM ..
If anything, at least this might begin a nice discussion, even if it is about how stupid I am?
I was kicking the idea of the Warriors being done with their roster in my pseudo-blog (required reading it is not .. trust me .. I just now have started to consistently drop thoughts whenever they come and I don't want to be edited) now that Biedrins is all squared away.
Thinking out loud, I asked myself how nice it would be for the Warriors to have a nice two-way guy at the 4 like Tayshaun Prince or Josh Smith or Ron Artest or someone in that vein. I figured in my head that having a two-way big would be really great - the Warriors could then start 3 two-way players: Stephen Jackson, Person X, and Andris Biedrins. Considering the deficiencies of Ellis and Maggette on that end of the court, that'd be a great balancing out of the roster.
So my mind started churning, which is dangerous because I need to save that energy for more essential things like being able to make sure the dog is fed.
As I was going through the list of guys that are available that Nellie would actually use, I was trying to parry it all down to people that would actually play defense. I didn't get very far because - duh - big men that are offensively versatile (read: can shoot) and play on both ends of the court are really rare and certainly wouldn't be available for peanuts.
You typically either get the big guy that bangs around and can't shoot or you get the one that can shoot and is afraid of the paint. Anyone that does more than that is paid eight figures and has a secure job.
I was thinking if the Warriors had the pieces to pry Rasheed Wallace off the Pistons' hand, but I just don't see it happening. His contract is nice for them and as much Dumars wants to shake things up, he's too good to make a silly move.
So I sort of gave up and was about to call it a night, but Zach Randolph's name just kept sticking in my head. Would I trade Marco Belinelli, Al Harrington, and Kosta Perovic for Zach Freaking Randolph?
NO WAY .. well .. actually .. maybe? Wait .. NO WAY .. actually .. maybe .. I think .. maybe I would?
Does he play defense? No.
Is he really committed to winning a championship? I've got doubts, but no proof either way.
And then I stopped asking questions and starting to just take it for what it is. Zach Randolph had a really bad year with the Knicks, but he's talented, versatile, productive and should be entering his prime ..
But wait! He's such a locker room poop-smearer, isn't he?
Oh .. but so was Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson .. and look what Nellie did with them.
With the right motivation, this guy can easily score 20 points and grab 10 boards a game. I know, his shooting percentages are pretty crappy and he doesn't make the players around him any better. I also understand that adding him would mean you have two guys in the starting line up that are black holes in he and Maggette - pass to them, and team play is basically dead.
But could Nellie get through to him? Can he, in his swan song as a coach, maybe - just maybe - turn Zach Freaking Randolph into a middle-classed man's Dirk Nowitzki? The Warriors already have the poor-man's version with Al Harrington.
I don't know .. I really don't. I went from thinking that this was absolutely ridiculous to actually considering it and when that happens, I dwell and wonder if there's anything to my shift in thinking.
What do you think of this lineup?
Monta Ellis / Marcus Williams / CJ Watson
Stephen Jackson / Kelenna Azubuike / Anthony Morrow
Corey Maggette / Anthony Randolph / JAE
Zach Randolph / Brandan Wright / Richard Hendrix
Andris Biedrins / Ronny Turiaf / Sleepy Freud
I’ll go ahead and say it – I would do it. It might be a little bit of a lateral move, but I’d actually role that dice as long as no picks need to be traded or nothing else crappy comes back. Maybe send the cash so the Knicks can buy Kosta out. They’ll probably buy Al out too, but that’s their problem. Walsh gets his All-Italian squad set up in Marco and Gallinari .. and then he can trade for Bargnani next season before the Raptors give him an extension they don’t need to give him. And this offer is sure as hell better than the 2nd rounder the Clippers offered for Randolph.
There has to be a reason everyone was excited by Randolph moving East last season – remember? Him, J-Rich, and Rashard Lewis were moving over and the East was going to be REBORN! That couldn’t have been completely lost already, right?
Randolph isn’t all that much better than Harrington, I admit that. But you give up Belinelli and Kosta, neither of whom are rotation guys, for someone that is better than Harrington because he does more and he still has the athletic ability to maybe – MAYBE – grow into something more defensively.
So yea .. I’d do it .. I think .. but I’m open to you slaying me for this long diatribe and I’m certainly open to having my mind swayed back and centering myself on the insanity that this whole thing was.
I don't have a dog, by the way. And it’s 3:22 AM now.
And this was way too long. I’m sorry.

One problem...
...is that Randolph, unless he’s been running sprints every second since the end of last year, is massively overweight. I remember seeing a Knicks game last year and being unable to believe how heavy both he and Curry were. They were almost spilling out of the armpits of their jerseys. It doesn’t strike me as a good fit in that regard, and that’s without considering the drawbacks you yourself pointed out. When you consider that Randolph’s prime years would likely block Brandan Wright, who I suspect has a much higher ceiling than Randolph had/will continue to have… mark me down as skeptical. In all honesty, I might even rather see Richard Hendrix crashing around down low. Granted, you of all people know a hell of a lot more about the game than a fan like I might ever, but from an outsider’s perspective, a Randolph acquisition would force me to consider rescinding what I’ve maintained for a couple years now; that Mullin knows what he’s doing.
The Rasheed thing is an interesting thought (and I’m sure while he’s much older than Randolph, he’d be infinitely more useful). God knows I’m no number cruncher, but there are some interesting ways I think you could make a deal without stripping the team bare. I don’t have their salaries in front of me, but wouldn’t it seem reasonable that you might snag Rasheed for Harrington, Azubuike/Belinelli (whichever they prefer, though I don’t know if you’re allowed to trade Azubuike so soon after resigning) and CJ Watson? Azubuike can back up both at the 2 and the 3, playing behind Prince and coming in whenever Hamilton/Stuckey are off or injured. Harrington is basically a wash when it comes to three point shooting with Rasheed, albeit he’s a far less skilled player, he’s also younger on a team that’s getting long in the tooth. Watson probably won’t see minutes with us, even though I’d rather have him than Marcus Williams, and he might be able to vie for backup minutes against the jurassic Lindsay Hunter.
In return we’d get Sheed, which would leave us with this (let’s assume we have to give up Kelenna).
PG Ellis/Williams
SG Jackson/Belinelli (Morrow?)
SF Maggette/Randolph (Morrow?)
PF Wallace/Wright/Hendrix
C Biedrins/Turiaf
That’s eleven players, ten if we don’t resign Morrow, but our starting lineup begins to look like one that could actually play some defense. Depending on Rasheed’s conditioning and how many minutes he’d play, I think he could be a 15/8 guy on this team, getting open threes and working the post occasionally. That may sound a lot like what Al did, but Sheed’s got the D.
by Zack Vank on Jul 28, 2008 4:04 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't really think Sheed is all that available
And especially unless you knock the Pistons’ socks off. They’re working on getting Josh Smith for Tayshaun Prince .. not sure why they’d be willing to part with Sheed unless it makes them markedly better. I don’t know if Harrington and Bellinelli really do that (and no, you can’t trade Azubuike right now).
As far as Randolph being a fatty .. yea .. there’s no doubt about that. Really, he’s a big man. I’ve heard rumors that after D’Antoni got hired, Fatman and Robin (Curry and Randolph) were working out at Grover’s facility in Chicago. Still, great concern to have for a running team .. something the Knicks will surely experience this season, I’m sure.

I figured...
...they wouldn’t be shopping him, although if I were Dumars I probably would be. Then again, I haven’t engineered an eastern conference powerhouse, either…
I thought perhaps the Pistons would be swayed by the offer of a first round pick- coming off missing the playoffs in the super-competitive west and losing Baron Davis, perhaps they’d fancy it a likely lottery pick. Certainly another team with a more certainly high pick could make that deal sweeter, but I can’t think of many teams likely to miss the playoffs that would have any reason to acquire him. I know Dumars drafts well, so I thought that the prospect of securing the extra first rounder might be a deal breaker.
I suppose if Randolph could somehow prove to me he could hang, I’d be less concerned about it. I just have trouble imaging him being in that kind of shape. I’m also a little absent-minded as to his shooting ability; does he have an extended range shot? Cause if not, I suspect Brandan would be better suited as a run and gun, rebound and dunk PF anyways.
by Zack Vank on Jul 28, 2008 5:28 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
For some reason that still doesn't make sense to me that they would trade
Tayshaun Prince for Josh Smith… It’s simply mind boggling that they would do that… If anything I would much rather have Tayshaun Prince because he is a young star on that team plus he’s got championship experience and is a very skilled basketball player… WAAAY more skilled than Josh Smith… Tayshaun is much more efficient as a scorer and can create his own offense… he’s a premiere defender and can play point forward as well… That doesn’t make sense to me that Detroit would want to do that… They already have Jason Maxiell playing that position and he’s doing very well there too!
PREE help me I don’t get it!!!

i don't know...
i read this post, walked around a bit, and then read it again, and was still not sure what i think about it.
then, i wrote a 7-8 line post about why i think al harrington will have a decent season, and that the trade will not be worth it because the “net gain” in randolph is not that large.
then, i realized that zach randolph really does bring an additional dimension to the warriors offense, highlighted by ruthless rebounding. and then i reminded myself that i think that marco and his trade value is overrated in the nba world.
so finally, i say do it. if marco turns into a superstar, we’ll kick ourselves for it, but i think he is still too much of a one-dimensional love-that-fadeaway player. because of that, i think he is still years away from a difference-maker (off the bench, even). as for perovic? ‘nuff said.
we have a deep enough bench right now that we can easily afford to lose bellinelli (i’m still high on anthony morrow). and i say that a worst case scenario is that randolph posts his career average of 16ppg and 8 rebounds, which is more like a best case scenario for al harrington.
i dont like saying it either, but this is a trade that will make the warriors a better team.
note some logistics that could change my mind, if i considered them more: randolph has 3 years/48 mil left on his contract (avg of 16mil/per, slightly backloaded), which kinda hurts us as far as ‘10 free agency is concerned (but i’m not sure that matters much right now, for the dubz).
by Run Dubz on Jul 28, 2008 4:35 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
cap/tax/etc. question...
ok so i just crunched some numbers… salaries for next year are:
Al Harrington: $9,226,250
Kosta Perovic: $1,634,000
Marco Belinelli: $1,446,720
TOTAL: $12,306,970
Zach Randolph: $14,666,667
so the warriors will be bringing in an additional 2.3 mil, roughly. again, i have limited understanding of all this cap/tax threshold business, but wouldn’t this trade put the warriors well over the luxury tax threshold? or is there some sort of clause that allows us to not pay it?
by Run Dubz on Jul 28, 2008 4:45 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
the rule is something about
it has to be within 125% of the outgoing salary or something and it looks like that would be. but to get a real answer youd have to get the input of someone a little more knowledgeable about those matters like Pree, Kenntoe, Sleepy, Boston or JAE.
by sam23 on Jul 31, 2008 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would do it in a heartbeat!
Any player would have had a problem playing on that Knicks team last year. I give Zach a free pass on that issue. He does give us a dimension we do not have and If we added him giving up who you suggested then we are a definite playoff team. Maybe a top 5 team in the west.

how'd you go from looking for two way player to thinking about Randolph?
And then I stopped asking questions and starting to just take it for what it is. Zach Randolph had a really bad year with the Knicks, but he’s talented, versatile, productive and should be entering his prime ..
as for your description of his good qualities… how do you get “versatile”?
i dont think post makes you lose credibility or whatever. if anything, it shows how even in your more off-the-wall ideas, you present a well thought out and modest view.

Zach Randolph is versatile
His offensive game is one of the most versatile among 4’s.

by PAWarrior on Jul 28, 2008 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
WE ALREADY HAVE
a versatile 4 in al plus he doesn’t come with all that extra off the court stuff that will destroy this young team. zach puts up numbers but the off the court stuff will have a bigger effect.
by ADOBO on Jul 28, 2008 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well
Al isn’t versatile, I would argue he is fairly one dimensional in that he only shoots threes for the most part. Like I said later on, he is a player, its just whether you want to put up with the baggage. I would agree with you, probably not worth it.
Playoffs!!??

can you elaborate a bit
instead of using circular reasoning
by dso on Jul 28, 2008 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
IM SURE
you’ve heard of all the trouble zach has had with the police. gun and weed possession i believe it was. the blazers also complained that he constantly got into fights with teammates and he would always be late on game days. imagine if the team is going over the game plan already and he’s not even there yet. it’ll the throw everything off before they even step on the court. he’s really not a good example to this young team so he’s not worth all the trouble even if he puts up double doubles nightly.
by ADOBO on Jul 28, 2008 12:43 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i totaly agree with you and disagree you
a two way guy at the 4 would be great to have and maybe help hide some deficiencies that mags and monta have on d. but Zach Freaking Randolph NO thanks. i think there is one more deal left to be made and it should be made at this position but again Zach Freaking Randolph NO. i dont think that we are that desparate for a 4. it would be nice to get a more proven player but not Zach Freaking Randolph.
i would rather have AK47. i know this would never happen but he would be better hit for our style of play. so would amare or jsmith.

this post would have been deleted
if it werent by pree….
but anyway, zach randolph has a rediculous contract. so i dont get why we would give anything up for a more expensive version of harrington
harrington had a bad year last year but the dude is not a good center. shit, hes only 6’9! now that we have turiaf, he should be able to primarily be a forward
by 3Kings650 on Jul 28, 2008 9:37 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
its an original idea and well written. It acknowledges the flaws in the argument but also presents a pretty good case for a tough argument to make. I dont think it wouldve been deleted had it not been by Pree. Randolph has a huge contract and I semi hate him as a player but to say he is a more expensive version of Harrington is ridiculous. Randolph has his shortcomings but he is probably one of the top 5 post players in the league, something Harrington isnt even close to. I dont like the trade idea because I’d like to see what Harrington can do with a more well defined role, and I’d like to see Wright get heavy minutes if Harrington falls back into Nellie’s doghouse.

Very, very tempting...but no
Giving up Al, Marco, and Kosta for Zach Randolph looks pretty on paper. Heck, it’s a done deal if I was playing NBA Live. But after some thought to this intruiging proposal, I think this deal is too risky to pull off. IMO, the negatives outweigh the positives. I attended Michigan St. and somewhat keep up with Spartan hoops. Randolph started less than half the games in his only season. That year, J-Rich and Charlie Bell were the go-to guys, but with his scoring and rebounding talent, there had to be a reason why Tom Izzo didn’t start him that much (poor work ethic / disruptive attitude). In result, he left for the draft after his freshman year. How appropriate that the Jail Blazers picked him up. Then a couple of years later, he sucker punched Ruben Patterson in practice which forced him to miss the rest of the season. Not really the type of player I want on my squad, especially with the money that he’s making. Also, with D’Antoni eagerly shopping him around, makes you think that the up-tempo style doesn’t fit him. Even though Randolph has great shooting touch for a big man and is a rebounding machine, Z-Bo is a no go…

pass on this one
I think our squad is going to be full of hungry, young, talented guys who are going to grow close as the year goes on. Watching all that joy and the potential for running other squads off the floor is going to be fun. Honestly, I am a bit nervous that unless maggette drinks the Nelson koolaid he may dampen the potential for this entertainment.
Randolph would seriously slow this down as well as have the “collect my paycheck journeyman” mentality. I worry about how it impacts the chemistry and how much it limits the growth of our younger players.

Really?
I love the move for Houston. I’m not a big Donte Greene fan and think Houston will be a top 4 team in the west next year meaning the pick will be pretty late in what isnt expected to be a very deep draft. IMO, when happy, Artest is one of the top 10-15 talents in the league and he loves playing for Adelman. This is a team that made an incredible run last year to finish in the middle of the western playoff pack and now they add Yao, Artest, and Barry while basically only losing Bobby Jackson? San Antonio, Utah, LA, and New Orleans will have their hands full trying to stave off the Rockets. On a side not I kinda like the deal for Sac too, but mostly just cuz I’m a huge Golden Gopher and Bobby J fan. How do you not like this move Boston? you think Artest implodes just as Yao and McGrady get hurt again or what?
by sam23 on Jul 31, 2008 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Umm...
I think it was a brain fart. You can clearly see my sentiment “no way that pick is below 20”... umm… Yeah. I’m with you on the move from Houston’s side. Two almost second round picks (but they’re guaranteed) for a top 5 defender to bolster an already strong defensive team? Yeah… Houston’s gonna be tough this year.
by Dubs fan in Boston on Aug 1, 2008 7:16 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Artest loves Adelman
I really doubt thats a rental player situation. Houston is now one of the deepest teams in the league and they aquired a star who can compensate for injuries to EITHER McGrady or Yao by sliding to the 2 or the 4 when one of em goes down. I think its a great move. Gives Adelman a ton of flexibility-I envision a smal lineup with Alston/McGrady/Battier/Artest/Landry or Scola and a big lineup with McGrady/Artest/Battier/Scola/Yao. Gives them the potential to be the best and toughest defensive team in the West.
by sam23 on Jul 31, 2008 9:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah...
That too… he’s due for a contract, they have an entire year to extend him before other teams can get their hands on him. He’ll get market value, but Houston will almost certainly keep him.

Not for Nellieball...
I doubt Randolph would do any good for this team. When I think of a trade like this I think of the Suns trading Marion away for Shaq. I’m sorry but that team looked like a Western Conference Finals team before the trade. It did nothing but slow their team down. Shaq gave it 110% every game but he just doesn’t work in a run and gun system.
Zach Randolph is a player I see slowing the Warriors down even more. I’d rather have them trade for a mediocre SG that can run and just play small ball rather than a mediocre big man who can’t run and bangs down low.

does Action Jackson on deciding who should fit in or not. he just jack up 3’s and play overrated D. Zack could be crazy most of the time, but he is 20 and 10 pf that could help us out. But I would take a chance on him since he be whinning to get out of here if he play here. We need develop AR fast so he could play both sf/pf position.
by warriorfan4life on Jul 29, 2008 12:14 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's all he does?
So you’re telling me that Jackson isn’t our best defensive player? If not, who is? Zach Randolph’s FG % isn’t great meaning he kinda just jacks up shots also. Just because he MIGHT contribute 20 and 10 a game doesn’t justify that he is helping us more than hurting us. Troy Murphy used to contribute 20 and 10 but I think we’re better off without him.
As for developing Anthony Randolph fast…slow and steady wins the race my friend. He should take all the time he needs to develop so he can be that superstar we’re hoping he is.

No way to Zach Randolph
I agree with the majority on this post. I don’t even think Zach Randolph can dunk a basketball! Our team is known for exciting basketball and we wouldn’t want a PF that can’t dunk! LOL. If I were to trade for a Knicks forward, I would much rather have David Lee at a lower salary. Or might as well sign and trade for Josh Smith if we’re gonna take on Randolph’s salary.

This one makes a lot more sense
than you guys are giving credit for.
Zach Randolph is a much better player than Al Harrington. Zach is also very available because of his bad contract so he wouldn't cost very much. The Knicks would love to get rid of the 17 million they owe Randolph in 2010-2011 - meaning they would clear his salary for the infamous summer of 2010.
If we didn't have Don Nelson as coach I'd say no, because getting Zach, Jax, Maggette, and Monta to coexist would be no small task. But because we have the luxury of the Don, I would really be for any move that improves our team's talent level with little cost, and this move fits that description.

hmm no idea why my post came out like that
summarize: Zach is a much better player than Al. We can get Zach cheap because Knicks want cap room for summer of 2010. Therefore we can improve our talent level for cheap. All we have to worry about is improving our talent level because we have Don Nelson and he’s able to make all these misfits work together.

We're almost out of cap hell
Now you want to jump back in? I say no.
I would definitely do the suggested trade, except for the fact that we’d have to pay him 17.33M in ‘10-’11. For a player of his caliber, that’s gonna be bad. It’d help now, but would hurt later. But it won’t help enough to make us a championship contender. Not enough to risk it for, IMO.

How do you bring in Randolph and pay him significantly more than anyone else on your team, as a gamble? I’d rather roll the dice with the current team and look for someone with more upside who is cheaper.
I mean, if we’re considering paying $17.3 on Randolph, we probably should have just resigned BDiddy to the numbers he wanted…
That’s a bad contract, pure and simple. Don’t touch it.

by MeTaLLiCs0naTaS on Jul 28, 2008 11:28 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Um, not really a good idea
1. Marginal talent increase (no D, kills our style of play, not a likeable player, bad attitude)
2. Adds 2010 Salary. The whole reason the Knicks want to get rid of him is to make a FA run in 2010. Why would we give up our cap space in 2010? Adding a true superstar (IE NOT Randolph) in 2010 would make us legitimate contenders with a core of Player X, Monta, Maggette, and Beans. Throw in one of Wright and Anthony Randolph, and you’re seriously a contender.
2010:
Scenario A:
Stud PG
Monta
Maggette
Wright/Randolph
Beans
Scenario B:
Monta
Maggette
STUD signing
Wright/Randolph
Beans
Either way, Zach Randolph is not the solution, and would just be a problem.
I think Pree’s credibility is why people aren’t bashing this, which is fine, since he’s earned it.
by ohmangoAs on Jul 28, 2008 11:32 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I think it's because he openly said "This is crazy"
And we’d be increasing talent at a reasonable cost. Most of the posts that people bash are of the ilk:
“Lets trade Al, CJ, and Kosta for Josh Howard. We can sweeten the pot with a second rounder or some cash!!!”
This one A)Makes our team better, and B)Isn’t outlandish, as Randolph doesn’t fit D’Antoni’s system, and he has a bad reputation which further lowers his market value.
by Dubs fan in Boston on Jul 28, 2008 11:42 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Doesn't fit D'Antoni, but does fit the W's?
Last time I checked, we played a similar game. No way I want to ADAPT our game to ACCOMMODATE Randolph…
Look, he put up killer numbers for my fantasy team the year before he was traded. But he doesn’t fit here.

Reasonable cost?
ummm…
Do you have any idea what a bad idea Randolph is? the Knicks have been trying to give him away for a year now…
Think about this. Randolph might be what prevents us from taking a run at Wade, LeBron, Bosh, Amare, Yao, Nowitski, etc.
by ohmangoAs on Jul 28, 2008 11:52 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Grrr....
First, let me say I agree that Randolph isn’t worth the risk.
Monta
Jax
Maggs
TMNT
Beans
or
Monta
Jax
Maggs
Randolph
Beans
The second line up is much better THIS YEAR. Randolph provides the same scoring & nonexistent defense that TMNT does, but Randolph also provides rebounding (a key asset).
I agree (and if you read other posts, you’ll see that) that it hurts us long term, and isn’t worth the risk or the financial investment.
Finally, I’m not going to think about losing out on the names you mentioned above because they won’t be available. 70% will sign extensions before they become free agents (see Paul, Chris and Williams, Deron), 15% will resign with their own teams, and the rest will go to LA or NYC because their shoe deals give them an extra 15M to be there.

My stance on this remains the same
Until you propose REASONABLE trades that move us into “championship contender” mode, you’re just a whiner if you don’t support the positive moves that have been made or that are projected.
If you are actively wishing for the team to suck so much they have a chance to win the lottery, I don’t like you. If you’re rooting for your “favorite” team to lose, you’ve got issues.
I agree that Randolph doesn’t get us anywhere, but stop being such a downer.

We are all thinking of Randolph of last year
Randolph of two years ago with Portland WAS a star in the making. He was motivated, took off a ton of weight the summer before and it showed with his production.(23 and 10) But it is easy to forget the incredibly high praise he received that season because of the disappointing year he had in New York.(Where he still put up 17 and 10) A motivated Randolph is a star with incredible ability, it is just whether you are willing to risk taking on his baggage.

It was his girlfriend’s cousin that died.
In any case, that whole thing got a bit overblown – he was there for drinks and spent $106. I’ve talked to people that said he came in late with a female friend and some others, bought a round of drinks for the group, then they left (without paying, apparently).

but if you consider that Randolph lead the Trailblazers to a 32-50 record
and the same team, minus Randolph, was 41-41 this year in a much tougher NBA…
a 2nd bad sign, the Blazers had gotten steadily worse since Z-bo became a starter in 03-04, effectively replacing Sheed, until Roy & Aldridge showed up.
on the otherhand, the knicks were 10 games worse this past year w/ Randolph for Franchise being the only major difference.
since he became a starter, his team’s win totals have been 41, 27, 21, 32 and 23… that 41 featured Rasheed for 45 games until he was traded to the Hawks…
obviously, there are a ton of other factors contributing to something like this, but it’s definitely not something you’d consider a positive for Z-Bo.

Look
Championships don’t happen right away…the Celtics are the exception, not the rule (they were aided by an idiot former Celtic who screwed his own team by accepting a subpar offer for his superstar)...McHale if you’re slow
If you are a serious fan, and want a championship. The most logical road is this-
2008-2009 and 2009-2010- Fringe playoffs, build experience, develop Monta, Beans, Wright, Randolph, further. Losing a first round series or two is GOOD experience.
2010 Summer- Sign a big free agent. We’re not probably not going to get LeBron or Wade, but Amare, Bosh, Nowitski, or even Yao is possible. We’d be an attractive destination compared to other teams with similar space (Miami, New Jersey, the Cavs, all would have less talent on their roster)
2010-2013
Compete. When Maggette is your 3rd or 4th option, Monta in his prime is your #2, and Players like Beans and Wright or Randolph are your role players, you’re in GREAT shape. There’s no guarantees in Basketball, but this is a nice position to be in.
BE PATIENT. Randolph and similar junk isn’t worth it.
by ohmangoAs on Jul 28, 2008 12:00 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
we probably won't land a big free agent
it’s just that simple. most of the big names available in 2010 will be locked up to long term deals before they hit the market. it’s not as though the warriors would be the only team pursuing these guys either. i’d love to stockpile contracts that expire in 2010, but instead of hoping to land someone in free agency, use the inflated value of those expiring contracts to get some talent. if the team has made enough strides in that time, the warriors might be an attractive location for an all-star caliber guy who’s a couple years past his prime, not on the verge of retirement, but in his early 30s or something. if there’s a team that isn’t going anywhere that wants to get younger and take the risk in free agency, they’d make that deal. if the year 2010 is some sort of landmark date for the front office, that’s the way to get better.
by cap'n hack on Jul 28, 2008 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
We're not a piece of junk team anymore
a nucleus of Monta, Beans, and Maggette should be reasonably attractive 3 years from now (after they improve). Throw in Wright and/or Randolph (if they develop) and we’re really really attractive.
Look at the talent on recent teams w/ Cap space… Sixers, Clippers, Magic, etc. Not all that good.
It’s rare a team w/ talent has cap space.
by ohmangoAs on Jul 28, 2008 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
you say that as though
the sixers, clippers, and magic will be the only teams with cap space in 2010. that notion is completely false. teams are already scrambling for space 2 years in advance. the warriors should be good in a couple years, but they won’t be good enough to get a discount price on a superstar. if stat, or someone of that nature, comes to the bay for 10-11 mil. i will be shocked, and realistically, that’s about the cap space that will be around, if you’re feeling generous about the situation. it won’t be a superstar coming, even if that much cap space is cleared. the best/most likely option is a trade. free agency rarely brings a superstar to any team, so don’t build a team around the assumption that it will.

I mean, they got rid of this supposed “star” coming off a career year for the amazing Channing Frye and the right to have to pay Steve Francis a butt load of money to never set foot in their gym.
Randolph, who pretty much was one of the main reasons why the Knicks were perhaps one of the worst teams in NBA history, if not th worst considering their ridiculous payroll, lack of draft picks that would have been top 5 (thanks Eddy Curry trade).

The Trail Blazers traded Randolph (plus a couple other minor players) for Steve Francis, Channing Frye, and a 2008 2nd round pick. Frye is coming off the bench, and is decent for them, I guess. They immediately bought out Francis’ contract, with two years left, for a reported $31 million.

That and they’d just signed him to a huge contract (Won’t expire until after ‘10-’11 at 17.3M). Great young players that are ready to step in as starters combined with a bloated contract that will become untradeable in a few years, yeah they’d move him for whatever they could get. If they still had Zach Randolph under contract, we’d be talking about Aldridge, Roy, or Oden being on the market. They definitely wanted to get rid of him because of his bad attitude, but that wasn’t everything. It’s why we sold JRich for the 8th pick.

I don’t understand why everyone is so eager to dump Harrington in a trade. He’s 40% from 3-point! Now with Turiaf and Hendrix and Biedrins there should be less focus of trying to get him to rebound and he can focus on being a sharpshooter.

Alrighty
Randolph got fat last season playing under Isiah Thomas. I think it’s easy to lose all motivation to succeed when you play for a coach that you’re convinced isn’t going to be able to make things happen in a positive direction.
In any case, I don’t know if I’m convinced either way just yet. Yes, he’s fat and expensive, but this notion that he effs up the Warriors’ plans for 2010 needs to be visited.
By my calculation, the Warriors are going to have somewhere in the neighborahood of $49-million committed in 2010 with Monta, Biedrins, Maggette, Turiaf, Azubuike (PO), Wright (TO), Randolph (TO), and Belinelli (TO). Marcus Williams is an RFA that year. This is assuming that Stephen Jackson, Al Harrington, and Kosta Perovic aren’t brought back.
OK, so that ~$50-million means that the Warriors will likely have about $8-9-million in cap space, depending on where it stands. When you factor in two first round picks that will go into that, your number falls about $2-million, so now you’re looking at about $6-7 million in cap space, provided the team does nothing else.
Is that the kind of money that will bring in a superstar to Golden State?
So I’m not sure the argument that Randolph’s contract will mess up future potential free-agent signings is the best argument against him. If you feel that $16-million is too much for him as it is, that I can understand, but don’t cloud that with this notion that the Warriors will be able to do so many things if they don’t get him. The reality is that they won’t be able to with or without him.
Now, as far as him being fat, I can argue that Zeke had a role to play in that, but there’s no way I can deny that this is an issue. He’ll have to get in shape and recommit himself to the Randolph that had ridiculously quick feet for those spin moves. I like that he is able to both take opponents off the dribble and knock down outside shots and grab rebounds, but we haven’t seen it in a year and a half.
I’ll admit that. But I’m not willing to admit he’s complete trash. I have a soft spot for guys that have to endure the punishment that was Isiah Thomas as a coach and I’m willing to give him a second chance ONLY because the Warriors are giving up almost nothing for him. Belinelli is a nice player, but won’t ever be a starter on this team and Kosta is a prime buyout candidate.

Have you heard more about the details of the contracts?
Assuming no backloading, that 50M # you quote is closer to 46M. That’s 11M under the 2008 Cap. IF the cap goes up 3M over the next two years (possible) we have 14M. If we wanted to, we could also not exercise the option on Belinelli or Wright.
With about 11-14M in space, and the kind of depth of players available, someone reasonably good would drop to that range.
Also, shedding a small amount of salary (Kaz or Turiaf) should be possible.
Again, it’s not so much that I’m sure the warriors will get a star. It’s just that Randolph is too risky in terms of character, defensive ability, fitness etc. to be worth sacrificing the flexibility.

For example, amid the chaos of top-level FA's
can we be sure one of Joe Johnson, Manu Ginobili, Redd, etc. doesn’t drop to a bargain 12M?
by ohmangoAs on Jul 28, 2008 8:12 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Joe Johnson?
Michael Redd? These are the “saviors” you’re hoping to get at a bargain 12M? You need to rethink your priorities sir. We need a big man. And unless BWright turns into a 20/10 monster and Turiaf morphs into a defensive stopper, we’ll still need a big man 2 years from now.

examples man
I’m not going to plan a roster for 2010. For all we know, Monta will be traded for a big man by then (not that I’d want to do that)
The point is just the flexibility that payroll space provides. Replace those names w/ Amare or Bosh if you want.
by ohmangoAs on Jul 29, 2008 11:32 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
My main point was that I wouldn't pay JJ or Redd anywhere near 12M/year
They don’t do much on the court. They’re good complimentary pieces, but complimentary pieces or “one extra piece” as you put it below are not worth 12M/year.
That and, as I’ve said before, most of the perceived FA’s available on 2010 will be signed to extensions, half of the rest will be resigned as RFA’s by their current team, and the rest will go to NYC/LA for the limelight & shoe deal incentives. It’s a pipe dream to imagine the 2010 offseason of amazing FAs. Might as well imagine what it’ll be like in 2017 when Chris Paul and Deron Williams might be available (depending on what kind of contract they sign next).

they’re one extra piece.

ESPN (stein) plus AP
reporting 9M/yr. Not progressive. Incentive structure not yet reported. I’m really really happy its not backloaded. Even we aren’t big 2010 players, future flexibility is always good.

I could be wrong, but hasn’t Zach’s weight been a problem since Michigan St?

zach randolf
is the WORST defensive power forward in the nba. easily.

I agree with your premise that
our cap room will be great under the luxury line but our cap will not be friendly for signing FA’s. Therefore we need to trade AL this year and Jax next year as very valuable expiring contracts. It would appear that New York might be a player for us and that if wea do the right package a move for J Smith is viable. Personally If we can pick up Randoloh for only AL, Beliinelli and some laundry then we should do it. We would deifinitly be a playoff team with a post presence.

From A to Z?
4-5 years ago I would have killed for Randolph. I remember being crestfallen early in Jamison’s career when Jim Barnett, after a tough loss to the Blazers, said that Randolph, a rookie then IIRC, was by far the best player on either team.
Since then, his stock has plummeted, but his numbers really haven’t: he’s still beastly in the post, reasonably efficient from the floor (46.5% career, 45.9% last season), a solid FT shooter (77.4% / 77.2% last season), good at drawing fouls (5.2 fta/36 career, 4.6 last season) and a very good rebounder. Last season was actually his best rebounding season ever, by a wide margin: 11.4 reb/36 minutes, 18% TR pct., both very, very nice marks, miles better than TMNT’s.
Z-Bo’s obviously not a natural fit for the pace of Nellieball, but on the face of it, his refined post game would make a perfect complement to Biedrins’ slashing style (Conversely, any fool could have told you he’d be a bad fit with wastecase Eddy Curry clogging up the middle). Had his name not been tarnished by association with Isiah and the Knicks, we’d all be clamoring for him. And … he’s still only 26, just beginning his prime.
So what’s the hangup? Four things, I guess: (1) his bad attitude, (2) his lack of D, (3) his fatness, and (4) the 3/$48 remaining on his contract. #1 isn’t too much of a concern for me: any guy who works enough to rip down 11.4 rebs/36 doesn’t have the kind of attitude problems I worry about. The no-D is more of a problem, as is the fatness, especially in Nellieball. I can’t think of too many fat hoopsters who have thrived (viz. Roberts, Curry, et al.) Even superstars like Barkley and Shaq regressed fast when the spare tire started inflating. And the money is pretty daunting…
On balance… probably not. I mean, why risk tying up $16M a year in that body, when we can just slide that studly third string center of ours over to PF…? ;-)

Zach? No way.
He’s making 17mil in a couple of years. There are far better ways to spend that money.

do you seriously think
that zach randolph is a big upgrade over al harrington?? and we’d be throwing away bellinelli, losing depth, paying randolphs discuting contract. personally i think this is horrible.

ADDITION BY SUBTRACTION
I don’t think it’s as bad as it sounds! So we trade a 4 that’s undersized, can’t rebound and prefers shooting from the outside (AL), a very entertaining EURO w/ acrobatic shots, who has a low FG% (MARCO) and a big man, well that’s just a big man, who won’t get any playing time, and in return, we would get a big that actually rebounds and can average 20 PPG.
So we’d kinda slow down NELLIEBALL, but what was it that we couldn’t do in the previous year’s playoffs….? Oh yah, REBOUND! Now if we had ZACH, he would definitely provide more muscle or fat depending on his conditioning and rebounding, not to mention scoring inside. As for DEFENSE, has everyone forgotten we’re the WARRIORS and we don’t really play your typical D? We scramble and try to get turnovers and run it back! Besides, if ZACH is as fat as he really is, he’d plug up the middle…literally!
Okay, so making this trade would probably hinder AR’s development and playing time, but people have projected that he’s still got a ways to go! So would it really be that bad if he had to play behind ZACH? Worst case is we make the trade and ZACH doesn’t get PT only because NELLIE actually plays the ROOK!
In any case, how probable of a trade would this be anyway? WHATEVER! PREE’s just thinking outloud! That or someone’s hacked into his account!
GO WARRIORS!!!

This would have nothing to do with AR's development
Nothing. He’s either behind Al/Turiaf/Jax/Wright/Veteran A and Veteran B on the depth chart, or he’s behind ZBo/Turiaf/Jax/Wright/Veteran A/and Veteran B on the depth chart. He’s not seeing PT unless it’s garbage time anyways.

TRUE...
But given how “high” everyone is on him, I’m sure that’s what people would be thinking. I just came out and said it. No biggie, although I wouldn’t mind seeing what the kid can do. Just being optimistic about him.

The same people were clamoring for BWright to get PT over Beans last year
And the same people will be clamoring for Draft pick X to get PT over Randolph next year. You don’t have to be their mouthpiece.

Which would be ideal for him as they have some great Basque restaurants down there to fatten him up.

I'M SORRY
I thought this was a public forum! No disrespect, but I think I can say what I want, when I want in here. You don’t need to tell me who I should or shouldn’t be speaking for. Thank you!
And just to make amends, I do agree w/ you that those same people will be clamoring for the future picks to get some PT. That wasn’t my really my point. Who really knows how the season’s gonna pan out at this point? We don’t even know if the W’s are done w/ tinkering or overhauling the roster.

Well...
It seemed like you disagreed with the people who are high on Randolph when you put high in quotation marks (usually meant to be interpreted as sarcasm). Forgive me for misunderstanding. If you’re speaking of your own opinion, I just disagree with you on AR’s ability to contribute and see PT this year. If you’re saying something because you think other people are thinking the same thing, but you don’t agree with what you’re saying… let them speak for themselves.
