Chemistry is key to Season

I have enjoyed the offseason and all the changes that have occurred. Like many, I was sad to see some players leave (Baron, Barnes, Pietris), but also excited to see others come (Maggette, Turiaf, Randolph, Marcus). To be honest, it has kicked up entertaining and interesting “Post” on this site (that many people are complaining about too much) in a time that is usually not as busy in compared to in-season. I understand a lot of points about this trade and that signing, and many points are valid, but at this time I feel the roster is pretty much set and the focus that REALLY should be talk of is about CHEMISTRY.

Teams have flourished with great rosters and also with suspect rosters as well. The 2008 Celtics were criticized due to the lack of depth they were left with after the major trades with Ray Allen and Garnett took place, and we all know how that ended up. My point is that the roster is set and we all have never seen this group play together, and the key to the season is in the hands of coaches and players to build that chemistry to get the most out of their collective abilities. I for one am interested in how it all will play out, due to the “odd” roster that has been assembled.

The dubz have implemented a core that is still guard/forward dominated (Maggette, Harrington, Wright, Randolph, SJax, Hendrix), but players such as Maggete and Hendrix (up until now are unproven and inexperienced) do bring a “physical strength and toughness” that lacked last year and seem to be a better balance in the roster then what was there last year. We also have the youth, we have the “Potential” as well as some experience and leadership, but in the end it is a team game. I see the success of the team to be defined by the way these professional athletes can become cohesive and refer to one another at a level where it becomes instinct and fits the Warrior style.

Let’s be truthful, this is a team that is not defined by positions, since the majority of them are going to be playing 3 to 4 positions throughout the season. Even the rookie Randolph stated that he views himself on this team as a “Point-Forward”, only with the Warriors! I have always liked that approach because I feel that it somewhat keeps the game more open for players due to the fact that they have so many options in all the different matchups they will face. The Dubz are freestyle basketball, a form of “controlled chaos” that is entertaining, but also can be manipulative and effective….if done right. That style is overwhelming for opponents, but only when done with a specific attitude and swagger, something I feel was largely missing from last season's squad.

I want to see the Dubz get out and “Run Hard” and play that “Scrappy” style that causes chaos for opponents, that is trademark Dubz game. This style though, only can work when the rhythm is right, with players all on different pages, that style brings large leads that are lost in the span of 5 minutes (and vice versa). That has been mentioned as the allure and appeal of the Warriors games, yet me personally, I would rather see the Warriors demolish teams in an all out slaughter. When the Warriors are on the F.L.Y. and the game is beautiful, but all last year I did not see that same fight and desire together that provided the special run the year before. I figure it is hard to maintain and there are many other factors involved that probably were explanations, but I just feel that even though the Warriors roster can be tweaked her and there, but if the mind, passion and chemistry aint right, then no significant change is going to happen.

Don’t play for just the paycheck, leave that to us “common folk” who are stuck in that world, these players play a game as their career and get PAID large! Go out and worry about pride and be competitive for the sake of wanting to win every time! I kind of want to see the technical’s and ejections (sometimes when the time calls for it), I love that passion and fight. It should be looked at as an insult if an opposing player throws one down hard in our gym, or if the other teams bench is laughing and enjoying themselves during the game. If any of that was happening, that is when the beast comes out and goes insanely HARD! I know I may sound like just some average fan, but this is still a game from what I understand, and when the hoop game starts, all that other stuff gets pushed to the side and a true player and athlete should just think the same; Win, don’t lose, Win! I’m telling you, do not worry about the blend of players, just hope that these current Warriors find a way to ball together and stay determined for all 48 minutes! The ability and skills are all there in each individual player, so the next step is turning all that into one beautiful beast of a team!

The game needs to become fun again and that “fire” needs to be installed in every player (and coach too) so success can be associated with Warriors basketball!

excellent post....

that’s exactly how i feel. okay, we lost some players picked up some new ones. i like most of them, and i know there are a lot of complaints, but i like ur attitude: get over it and move on and now we hav to talk about if this team does have the chemistry to play good basketball with each other

by MeTaLLiCs0naTaS on Jul 29, 2008 5:01 PM PDT   0 recs

The most important thing...

you said, is stay determined for 48 minutes. I think that may have been the biggest difference from th 06/07 squad.
There were times during a game when you could see the that the aggressiveness wasn’t there for stretches. like you said, we could score quickly, but also let teams back into the game quickly.
I am hopeful that with the addition of Ronny, the bench guys are ready when they get called on. it would be great to see that rub off on the staters as well. because with the way we play defense when we arern’t totally focused, teams can get back in gaems in which we get off to double digit leads.

Great post

But I think you messed up when you said “Maggette and Hendrix (Up until now are unproven and inexperienced.” Just thought I’d point that out.

by boomdizzleness on Jul 29, 2008 5:38 PM PDT   0 recs

we had the best chemistry when j-rich was on the team

if you want to talk about chemistry just watch our team when j-rich was on the team.

obviously chris mullin and the warriors organization has no regard for long term chemistry and only regard for long term profits.

we’re not gonna win a championship until monte can prove he’s the man and even when he has proved he’s the man on the warriors it will be a couple years after he’s proven until we will ever win a championship.

baron was the man, but once the core of baron monte and j-rich was broken then we had nothing but playoff hopes and no championship dreams.

by azntigar78 on Jul 29, 2008 6:06 PM PDT   0 recs

The chemistry with JRich was great

Unfortunately, but for a brief month-long stretch, the team mostly sucked. But for a total choke by the Clippers v. Sacramento at the end of 06/07, we’d be looking at a 15-year playoff drought.

Championship dreams, indeed…

You also have to factor in that for more than half a year, we still had Dun Dun & Murph

So you really have to look at that playoff team as two different teams, one from the beginning of the season and one at the end of the season.

by Mr. Monday Night on Jul 30, 2008 5:24 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually, better to look at it as three teams. They were more or less a .500 team with Dunleavy and Murphy. I know it’s easy to think of them as being worse, but at the time of the trade, they were 1 game under .500 through 39 games (and no, it wasn’t “more than half a year”—it was a shade short of half the season).

Then after the trade, they stunk. They stunk after the trade for a couple of months, almost all without Richardson and about half of the time without Baron too. They looked out of it, lost, unable to do anything right.

Then Baron and Richardson came back and played collectively the best ball of their careers and the team was really good for a short period of time.

[You could actually say that they were 4 different teams if you wan to count the ultra-short-handed loss to LAC after the trade but before Harrington and Jax reported.]

You'll have to see

A lot of leadership from Jackson, Maggette, and Turiaf to have any solid chemistry. It takes time to develop it and all these youngsters simply are going to need time to make that happen. You might see it in January, though, because they should adapt to each other fast.

This years team is riding on a lot of

the hypothetical. We are hoping and assuming that the young players from last year and this year will play up to expectations, our expectations. We expect them to come in and play solid quality minutes. I believe that BWright will do that, and many feel he may steal the starting role. But that is probably not going to happen because Harrington will have the opportunity to be the 1st or second outside shooting option, though it may appear that AL outside may hurt our o-rebounding, Maggs and Jax(mostly maggs) have serious offensive rebounding skills, and Monta had a number of 10+ rebounding games more towards than end of the year. The guards, especially Monta will feel the need to replace Baron on the glass.

As Monta’s end of the season rebounding, mid-range jumper, and improving patience have shown, Monta has all the tools to quickly learn to be a legit Iverson type PG, who can also become a better passer, defender, and rebounder that A.I. Monta will be quicker and a better scorer than Iverson. Also Maggette who likes to take the ball and drive, Jax who can catch and shoot, pass/run offense or drive, AL who can (and I feel this year will)be productive from distance and close range, will all be crucial factors to aid monta’s success. Plus I feel Nellie’s system is the best for a score first, fast and athletic PG to learn in. Also look for Biedrins to improve in ALL areas of his game. Easy 12ppg double double center.

I’m also excited to see if Maggette’s scoring and D will pick up in Nellie’s system( D in nellie’s system???). That’s right, team D!! Something that will be crucial to our success. We will have Jax be our killer D man, Monta will play only PG’ s for the most part, and Maggette can rely on the team oriented zone and less man than what the clipps play, cause he has proven to be a sketchy one on one defender. D will definitely still be our low point this year. Safe to say that our bench has more D withTuriaf, Wrights length, and Buike. But that’s the beauty of having this team coached by Nellie, the mix and mis-match factor that Nellie enjoys.

The picks this year probably wont be as good as we hope, and both Beli and Morrow are up in the air, as well as Marcus Williams. But we will have a very solid starting rotation with a group that complements one another very well, especially on offense. And our first 3 men off the bench will likely be(no particular order) Turiaf Buike and Wright. That inserts D and rebounding while slightly sacrificing the O. But I feel that we will be needing those things more than O, considering the scoring ability of our 1st unit.

Another reason I am optimistic is that this will be more of a team oriented team vs. a star oriented team that was last years team. Nellie seems to thrive when he has more pieces to go to vs. one savior. Thats why I feel Nellie isn’t very bummed losing Baron. Also the media wont be able to basically label us “so and so’s team,” that will go a long way into building the chemistry of this team. Not to mention that we wont have a player that will want to carry the team by itself and try and do to much and make bad decisions, Baron’s main flaw(although Maggs or Jax are candidates). 48 wins is the best a Baron Davis ran team with a stellar supporting cast can do. Now I wanna see how many wins a Nellie ran team full of athleticism, talent, deepth and commited players can win. Plus we still have a 3 headed monster on offense. This year wil be exciting, and we’ll have a better idea of what to expect after 7-10 games

Great Post!

I couldn’t agree more! I’m cautiously optimistic about the Warriors offseason, but fully acknowledge that quite a few things will have to break their way to even consider being a playoff team. Having said that, I’m as excited for the beginning of this year as I have been for any, and I’ve been a Warriors fan since I was 8 (1975!). Your post really nailed the intangibles that will play a major role in the Warriors success, or lack thereof, next year!

Good Post.

I hate it when players taunt and talk trash to other players and they get called for a t.
Just let them play.
Like let that be between the players. That gets each team pumped up.PASSION TO WIN
Team that’s getting taunted- Hey man there taunting us we can’t let them do that.
Team who was taunting- Come on Come on We the best (sounds cheesy)
Also gets fans involved.

Team Chemistry:

I love how Matt played on the court.Always doing anything to win
I love that back pass he gave to jack or that swing pass to j rich in the corner on fast break.
He even had Believe on his neck.

He kinda made the team chemistry on 06-07 well, not really

Buike is Hella buff. Does He take steroids?

Yeah I think it was a four way thing with BoomJ ason,Jax and Barnes feeding off each other’s energy. What a dumb thing to break that up, should get a GM fired!

remember though....

that team was gutted with the trades and the main question was “who else is left to help the big 3”. When one of those 3 got injured at a point in the season, I remember being surprised at how the Celtics as a team still not just won, but dominated with their bench players (the question marks). The chemistry was a right and had a blend of stability, encouragment and confidence that every player captured as a whole….....You can’t say that bench was not suspect at first.

by ineemoney21 on Jul 30, 2008 7:41 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Pierce

I think we gotta give more credit to Paul Pierce. When Kevin Garnett went down with an injury during their championship season, he really carried that team. Yes, the bench played very well but Paul Pierce picked up most of the slack. Ray Allen, whom I like very much, seemed more like a role player than a big part of that team for stretches. Pierce was the real leader along with Doc Rivers from the bench that created that chemistry which held that team together and kept them playing at such a high level even when KG was out.

wow

that was a really great post. +1. Last year didn’t seem like it had as much intensity it did in the 06-07 season.

by pnoib0y on Jul 30, 2008 10:24 AM PDT   0 recs

Are you kidding me

Jackson is the only leader on this team.

Monta is raw but looks like hes gonna take a nap on the court, he looks to soft spoken.

Turiaf, good god, you need game to have leadership, yelling and chest pumping dont cut it.

The warriors wont live and die by the 3 anymore.. monta and maggette arent really 3 pt shooters so at least the warriors wont take as many bad shots.. hopefully.
