relax....dont do it
all i gotta say about signing Elton Brand, Josh Smith Andre Igoudala is this.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyl5DlrsU90
Lets stay put, renounce every free agent we have right now, sign vets to one year minimum deals and then go for the perfect point guard to replace Baron with or without Nellie as coach.....
DERON WILLIAMS
This is the guy we should be shooting for just like how the nets are maneuvering to snag Lebron James from the Cavs. If a season of 12-70 is the price of getting Deron, why the heck not. Im no capologist by any stretch of imagination but can they really pay Williams when they have Boozer, Okur, Kirilenko, Harpring to enormous contracts? They also have to pay Millsap something.... What we should do is trade Utah some of our pieces to severely handcuff them thus increasing the odds of them having the cap space of re-signing Williams. Why would Williams sign with us? Who wants to live in Utah anyway?? That alone should give us a fighting chance.

Utah will not let him go
The jazz will not let Deron leave because he is their most important player. Plus Utah is already going to offer him a contract. Its better to go after iggy and smith to help our team now than to wait for something that is not going to happen.

He's their Most Important Player, to be sure
But unless they can shed some salary, or someone opts out, they have five guys — Boozer, Okur, AK47, Korver, Harpring — on the books next year for $50M. A guy like DWill probably starts at $15M, likely pushing them past the luxury threshold (67.8 last year). That’s a tough place to be for a small-market team.
Also, Utah can’t be the funnest place in the world for a young African American dude; and Jerry Sloan, while a fabulous coach, is also a bit of a Nazi. I could totally see Deron Williams seeking his bliss elsewhere. Now whether that place is the Bay Area … who knows. A lot would have to go right. But I think ‘Teego’s strategy is a totally legit one. The downside is that we probably suck for a year. The reward, if it pans out, is that we’re instantly a 50-60-win force to be reckoned with in the West for years to come. I dunno, that sounds pretty good to me.

is this...
where I put +2674848???
I mean cmon people what other goddamn options are there?? If we suck this year, then go all out for Williams next, I would be happy with it instead of these half assed sign Gilbert for max, signing Igoudala etc etc. If we can’t sign him, ok but at least we tried! And since we sucked, it wont be that bad because in a point guard heavy draft, we HOPEFULLY can get someone who can play the position.
I would border into tampering if I was the Ws. In the 2 visits of Utah this season, how about slipping Deron a few free drink/entrance coupons to Mitchell Bros?

I love Deron's game
but I dont see Utah letting him slip away. I think theyd be much much more likely to let Boozer slip away to Miami than let Deron come here. I dont know if its worth being awful this year to have a 10% or less chance at landing D-Will. Especially in a year when the top of the draft doesnt appear to be very strong.

yeah except
he’s not gonna leave utah under pretty much any circumstances, and he definitely wouldn’t leave to come to a 12-70 team

dont over exagerate
12-70 i dont think so more like 30-42

with this lineup?
i hope i was really exaggerating….and with our luck i could totally see an injury or two to Monta…which is very likely on how the kid plays and the gaziliion minutes this kid has to play just for us not to lose by 20 every game..
Wake up people we are now the worst team in the league. just envision a football team with a placekicker as the quarterback or a baseball team with an infielder as a pitcher playing with a bunch of clueless college kids

I’m not a capologist either, so I think the Warriors should trade Stephen Jackson for Lebron James, as well. I mean, they play the same position and the Cavs have been struggling to find the right pieces to their team and we’re in rebuilding mode so I think it’s a good trade.
yeah

yeah dude
im 12 and im fiddling with the trade machine and use the warriors in 2k8 with kobe, lebron, dwight howard, chris paul and chris bosh as my starting five…and of course you are so smart…
all im saying is, if there’s one person deserving of max money its Williams, not Gilbert, not Brand. So if something happens, like Sloan clashes with this kid, and asks to be out, wouldnt it be nice if we have the space available to sign him? Thats why its called FREE AGENCY. So why is Chris Paul signed to an extension and not Deron?

sleepy dude i just found out that you have been also advocating dwill. sorry i ddnt mean to steal ur thunder or anything but i just went over to the consolidated free agent thread today and saw ur posts there. So i guess we should spearhead the “Bring DWILL to the BAY movement?”
the dwill idea was born out of my curiosity about cp3 signing an extension. as a side note, ddnt CP sign for 4 years and Baron for 5? wow someone got screwed and im happy its not us

check your numbers
4 yrs for 68 mil equates to 17 mil a year on avg. Plus it ends when he’s in his prime so he’ll get an even bigger deal then.

u mean who?
cp was a great extension im talkin about baron getting 5

actually the player that is probably the odd man out in the jazz scenario
is millsap (unless larry miller is willing to venture into luxury tax territory)
plan B would be boozer if he opts out next year (as expected) wants too much money and sloan figures millsap is just as good for less money.
plan C would be trading okur.
plan D would be cutting brewer, almond, miles, fesenko and hoping to get millsap for cheap.

and if boozer walks
that should be another reason for Williams to bolt…

you do know
that no matter what, Utah can offer him much more money, right?
by sam23 on Jul 4, 2008 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
this time next year
lets say Deron says Oh I dont wanna play with the Jazz anymore since Boozer is leaving…I wanna play with a “contender” (or whatever the F that word really means) wouldnt it be nice that the warriors would be one of those teams that can accomodate him?
Instead of seeing the rants im anticipating to see like “AHHHHHHHH WE SHUD SIGN DWILL FOR REALLZ SHIIZZAAAAA” when we spent all our money the previous season for Okafor, Igoudala, Josh Smith, Monta, Biedrins

"Can"
Sure, if they want to go way into luxury tax land. Unless they can shed AK-47 or Boozer opts out, they could find him hard to afford. And as Vonteego points out, if Boozer walks, that makes Utah an even less appealing place to be long-term. I mean, if you were a studly 24-year-old black PG, would you want to spend the bulk of your career in Utah — even with Boozer?
I think there’s a great chance he bolts. Again, where he ends up is a total crapshoot. But, man, I’d love to have some big piles of chips some shiny dice to throw onto the table. You literally couldn’t design a better player to complement and lead our motley young core of Monta-Biedrins-Wright-Randolph-Hendrix-Belinelli-Azubuike.
That said, unlike ‘Teego, I’d gladly shoot our wad early on Josh Smith or Andre Iguodala. I think both those guys are close enough to elite and close enough in age to the core to make it worth blowing our shot at DWill. Brand, meh, not so much, given the age and injury history. Arenas, no freaking way. I still can’t believe that anyone in their right mind would offer him 5/$100M. If it happened, it must have been a case of pure PTSD.

and those deals are made up by Arenas/Brand and their agents, respectively.

I just think Utah
will do whatever it takes to keep DWill. Theyd be crazy not to, and I dont think it would be all that difficult for them to clear the cap space if they arent willing to go into the luxury tax for a year or two. I dont think we should go overpay someone like Maggette, but adding a guy like Smith or AI now is much better than holding out for a slim chance at DWill. I think he’d be great here, but I thinks its almost as much of a pipe dream as thinking we can sign LeBron in 2010. When he re-signs with Utah or goes to a bigger market team (Miami?) we’ve spent a year in the cellar for nothing and are even more likely to blow our wad on someone even more undeserving than Smith or Iggy. I’m not saying we absolutely must spend the cash, in fact if we cant land J-Smoov or Iggy, the best option is probably to put that extra dough towards lowering ticket prices, but lets not put all our eggs in a DWill in 2009 basket.

Dude, have you been to Boston?
Yeah, it has an embarrassing history of racism and segregation, but that’s before most of you guys were born. These days it’s basically the East Coast version of the Bay Area: liveable, cosmopolitan, educated, politically progressive, racially diverse. Massachusetts has a black governor, and it beat Cali to the punch in allowing gays to marry. Really, it’s about as far from Utah as it gets.
I think people here make too much of the “Utah=racist” meme, but it’s silly to think the state’s pervasive whiteness is no factor in a black player’s decision to ink there long term. Just look at the procession of white dudes who’ve featured prominently on that team: Stockton, Eaton, Ostertag, Crotty, Legler, Hornacek, Korver, Harpring, AK-47, Okur, Kosta Koufos, etc. ... Even the Mailman, their most prominent black star, was more a wannabe cowboy rather than a cool urbane dude like Deron.
I mean, I’m sure the savvy basketball people there realize how irreplaceable Deron is and will pay what they can to keep him. But it’s silly to think that, all other things being equal, a black player wouldn’t rather be almost anywhere else.

thats not really a fair argument Sleepy.
by sam23 on Jul 4, 2008 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, that's true
I think Boston really has evolved in recent years, but historically I’m sure it has been perceived as a less extreme version of Utah (even despite the prominence of Bill Russell, Sam Jones, KC Jones, Maxwell, Parish, DJ, Reggie Lewis, etc.) I imagine Boston, like Utah, still wouldn’t be at the top of a black player’s list — again, all other things being equal. IIRC, there were reports that Boston’s reputation as a “racist town” was what initially caused KG to dismiss the possibility of playing there.
I guess the point is that “free agent” really does mean FREE, and that there are invariably factors in a player’s decision about where to play that go beyond the $$$.

YES
Derek Harper refused to go to Utah. Nobody blames him. Don’t forget, these are the same fans that spewed racial slurs at Stephen Jackson and J-Rich during the Dubs’ series with the Jazz:
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4176/is_20070511/ai_n19117642
I couldn’t stand watching that series. So winnable, yet so unreachable. But that didnt annoy me as much as their uncreative, racist fans. Come on now, can’t you come up with anything better than t-shirts with “WE BELIEVE” crossed out? And chanting “WARRIORS SUCK?” I think I heard more creativity from Bay Area high school crowds. Another message to Jazz fans, tucked in polos and jerseys with New Balance running shoes from Big 5 are not stylish. Yech…

Good God....
If that isn’t bad enough, the treatment they gave Derek Fisher in their series against the Lakers this year is just evil:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/22893-utah-jazz-the-most-disgusting-fans-in-the-nba
Now, when D-Fish came back and killed the Warriors last year, I was as pissed like every other Warrior fan, but if you look at it from the POV of a casual fan, his return and performance was one of the feel-good moments of the playoffs (not for Warrior fans of course). Out of everyone, Jazz fans should respect him and thank him for that. He left Utah with Larry Miller’s (Jazz owner) blessing so that he could be in a major city so his daughter could get treatment. The racial slurs on J-Rich and Jack are one thing, but chanting “CANCER” and grabbing your eye is just inexcusable.
by dindin on Jul 4, 2008 9:06 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Im sure several warriors fans
have done things at games that would make us ashamed as well. I dont think its fair to dismiss an entire fanbase, city or state as racist simply because it has a reputation for being predominantly white or because of a few isolated incidents. That sort of dismissive stereotyping is nearly as ignorant as tossing racial slurs and insults.
