Warriors the deepest team in the NBA?

I personally am a realistic person. I'm possibly the biggest warriors fan but i think realistically. You look at the Warriors bench and tell me who has a deeper bench than we do? I have feeling that we'll be subbing guys in and out this year if people aren't producing. We have Watson and Marvin Williams who I personally think will be solid point guards for the Warriors. Imagine Hendrix and Turiaf down low and how much pounding they can do down there. Than you can get a combo of Randolph, Biedrins, and Wright. Some of the longest players in the league and that would create some mismatches on both ends of the floor (including defensive liabilities) but would be fun to watch. Then Azubuike and Belinelli off the bench will be nice. I feel the Warriors are pretty solid all around but playoffs might be a reach this year. I like to think realistically and the west is just so deep that it'll be hard but definitely possible because we actually have people who can guard other bigs in the NBA now.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

We'll have to wait and see...

I would like to think we have a deep bench but you never know. Who thought the Lakers bench would be so productive last year? I didn’t. O yeah it’s Marcus Williams not Marvin. Just thought I’d let you know.

who has a deeper bench than we do?

But does the bench look deep cause the starters are shallow? It’s all relative. Superstars make their bench look bad, so so players not as much?

No offense

but that is just not true. It sounds nice, but it means nothing. The Pistons have a great bench, and the Pistons have (to some) the best starting 5 in the NBA.

it's deep

And we really need that. We have some real talent off the bench. And I’m telling you, I would not be suprised to see Monta put up 25,6,and 6. I simply did not see a bad game from him in the second half outside of that one in Sac after his bro got shot. He developes s much and hads new things all the time. Who saw that leathal mid-range j coming. I sure didn’t. I think he’s a superstar now, and there are a couple others waiting to arise as well.

According to the comminsioner of the nfl, 104 people retired last year. 7 due to age, and the rest because of Patrick Willis

did you just wake up from a coma?

it’s not 1975 anymore and al attles is no longer the head coach it’s 2008 and Don Nelson is the head coach now. nellie is his nickname and he doesnt use a 10 man rotation like attles. he likes to use a smaller rotation like 6. once in a while he will use a 7 man rotation when he is feeling adventurous. good lock to you

by Rach on Jul 30, 2008 11:58 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

last year he used a small rotation

because our bench sucked…this year hes got no choice but to get more people involved because we have so much talent

Nellie wants to use atleast a 8 man rotation, but last year didn’t feel confident in his bench.

deep bench

I agree, we got the deepest bench in the league. It’d be tough to name a more talented bench than we have. The big question is whether or not Nelson plans to use his bench at all.

HELL NAW.
i like the makeup of our team but our bench is so young and unproven. Belli, Wright, and Randolph have never even been in an NBA rotation. We lack a veteran scorer off of the bench. i think our bench has a lot of potential but this is just a ridiculous claim.

by Agent Zero on Jul 31, 2008 12:26 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no

we have a deep bench but definitely NOT the deepest bench in the whole NBA. i mean just look at portland for example, as well as the lakers, rockets, jazz, hornets etc…i hate to be a pessimist but im just being realistic here…but we do have a pretty deep bench, deeper than last year’s atleast, ill give you that.

P.S.
MARCUS williams not MARVIN williams…hes on the hawks.

Remember this squad?
JACKSON
MILLER
DAVIS
DAVIS
SMITS
Why not mold our team after them.
First the trade.
Harrington, Draft Pick 09
for
Varejao and Damon Jones or Sasha

I would put this as my starting line up, but this squad pretty damn physical. Similar to, may be even better, younger, and quicker.

PG ELLIS
SG MAGGETTE
SF VAREJAO
PF TURIAF
C BIEDRINS

My starting line up:
PG ELLIS
SG MAGGETTE
SF JACKSON
PF WRIGHT
C BIEDRINS

by gambinofam on Jul 31, 2008 12:46 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what?

varejao at sf? no, no, no. to play sf you have to have some semblence of a perimeter game. and varejao is just a poor-man’s biedrins, why deal for him? we just got another energy-defense-rebounding guy in turiaf, who will replace some of what biedrins does when he gets a breather. varejao is just a duplicate player for our duplicate player. it makes no sense. at least al can score. plus isn’t sasha’s contract awful (and i know damon jones is overpayed)? that deal is just terrible through and through.

I like the look of our team, but I don’t see depth as an overwhelming strength for us. First of all, we look deeper than other teams because our roster has coalesced faster than most teams. There are a lot of unsigned players out there… come Opening Night, most teams will be deeper than they currently look. Second of all, there are other benches that I’d take over ours… Portland, Detroit and Utah strike me as deeper teams than us off the top of my head.

Turiaf and Azubuike are EXCELLENT bench players. Turiaf fits a role perfectly, and Azubuike is arguably skilled enough to start. Marcus Williams hasn’t played particularly well since joining the league, but he’s highly regarded and there are legitimate reasons to think he’ll improve… we’ll be seeing a fair amount of him, in any event. I’m guessing these three will be in Nellie’s regular rotation, and it may only be these three.

Wright is something of an X-factor—he could get a real chance to contribute this year, or he could continue to wallow. It’s hard to know what we have in him. I suspect he’ll be an asset off the bench, but I just don’t know how often he’ll be… off the bench. Randolph is an even bigger X-factor, as he could get some minutes right off the bat, or he might start in the D-league. The use and effectiveness of this two will determine whether we have a very good bench or a merely decent one.

To me, guys like Belinelli, Hendrix, Watson and Perovic don’t count as “depth”. None of them has proven they can play a significant role for a good team. Watson kinda held his own in limited minutes last year, but we haven’t even bothered officially re-signing him yet; Kosta barely played, and by all accounts didn’t deserve to; Marco didn’t play much, and looked pretty bad; Hendrix was a mid-second-round pick. It’s fun to get excited about their potential, but realistically, every team has a bunch of guys like these… they’re essentially non-factors till proven otherwise.

It’s a fun group of guys, with a young’un with some upside at every position. In terms of this season, though, I don’t know that this bench will be a huge weapon for us. I’m guessing we’ll see an eight-man rotation most of the way.

we’ve got a lot of bodies, but they’d all need to live up to all sorts of potential this year to call this the best bench in the nba.

by cap'n hack on Jul 31, 2008 1:42 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So...

We have 15 warm bodies? Look around the league man. Everybody has as good a bench as we do. We’re not special.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Jul 31, 2008 6:42 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nellie will probably play 9-man rotation

Monta, Williams
Jax, Buke, (Morrow)
Maggette, Randolph
Al, Turiaf
Biedrins

unfortunately not enough pt for Belli, Wright, Hendrix,CJ, Kosta but definitely an upgraded bench from last season

by shootda3 on Jul 31, 2008 7:12 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So Biedrins plays

48 minutes…Nice
And after that noone will think we overpayed him since his stats for 2008/2009 will be 18 pts,18 reb,4 blk.LOL

no, turiaf slides over to the center when biedrins needs a break. you know the positions on an nba team aren’t set in stone right?

lol...marvin williams

love the enthusiasm but dude lets be real here..portland, houston, and even the lakers minus turiaf..and definately utah with just counting korver and millsap..i think ur mistaken by assuming potential makes a quality bench. (and but i do think bukie qualifies as a vet scorer with all that hes been through and what he did at the beginning of the season last year agent zero)

the rockets have a deeper bench, oklahoma city too (haha)

by chilly echo on Jul 31, 2008 8:54 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

On a realistic tip ...

it only appears deep cause the frontline ain’t as all-star caliber. If you have a bunch of interchangeable good-average players than it’ll appear that way. The only person off the bench that’s really proven is KAZ.

by D3F1N1T3 on Jul 31, 2008 12:07 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

outside of Turiaf & Azubuike

no one else on the bench has been a solid NBA contributor.

and Marcus Williams is the only other one to even get minutes. and his stats, at least, indicate he is well below the average player at his position.

hopefully one of the perimeter players, Randolph or Belinelli or CJ (if he makes the roster) or Morrow (if he makes the roster) produces.

and one of the inside guys, Wright or Hendrix or Perovic (if he’s on the team) can produce.

by the evil monkey on Jul 31, 2008 12:09 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Its still in perception mode

Given that the warriors have made many personnel changes, it does appear that we do have a depp bench to refer to.

However, these individuals are still based on hype and has yet to prove themselves in the nba. last year we had great hopes for Belli and Wright, but they’re performances were not up to par.

we are expecting alot from these young guys we just picked up. the expectations are high and we all hope that these guys will do fine, and i am sure of that. just dont expect them to be the goto bench players like how other teams got it. (i.e. posey, vujacic, kopono, etc.)

Deepest Bench

Lol, I have to laugh at the biggest fan not knowing that it’s Marcus Williams. We can’t have the best bench because most of them have proven anything yet. 3 rookies, 2 2nd year players who didnt play, 2 Unproven PGs, and a still unknown backup Center. Other than Buike & Turiaf, its what GM’s love to call “potential”. It has the potential to be good if they can perform so until than, we shouldn’t call it the deepest.

deepest team maybe...best team? no

i like what mullin has done to deepen the warriors rotation and give the lineup a much needed other dimension. with the drafting of hendrix and the acquisition of turiaf (seemingly quality rotational players), we have a dynamic front line with both the upside, youth and offensive skills (in randolph and wright), and a solid defensive rotation (in hendrix [led the SEC in rebounding] and turiaf) to back up harrington who likes to play outside the paint and biedrins whose rebounding skills towards the end of last year seemed to take off.

we are very much deeper than last year…but deeper than the lakers, utah and houston to say the least? not at all. if most of the dubs perform up to expectations, then we will be an exciting and fairly good team. but too much rides on the development of randolph and wright in the front court, in ellis becoming a legitimate 1 guard, and in his backup (marcus williams) becoming the player he was supposed to be behind jason kidd. there are too many what ifs. the only solid rotation is at the off-guard postion where you have maggette, jackson, azibuke and ellis all able to slide over and be a dominating 2.

the other thing you must account for is how nelson will use his players….he has to play williams at the point for at least 20 minutes a game…but the most important development of depth on the dubs will depend on how he will assign minutes in the logjam created by randolph, wright, hendrix, turiaf, harrington and biedrins at the 4 and 5 spots. theres a lot at stake and a lot to balance at those positions.

you only win if you put in.
-J.

I apologize in advance

But the Warriors seem like one of the LEAST deep teams, especially in the West.

This could change if any of the 2nd year or rookie(s?) play better than expected or take a leap from raw to contributor.

There is a lack of a real starter worthy PG, Marcus Williams has skill but has consistently been out of shape and has a bad attitude, and CJ Watson is a good backup I root for—but more of a 3rd stringer on a good team.

You got a lot of good wing players, but aside from FreeJack and Maggette they are either unknown or not that great. Marco should get no playing time with a rotation of Jackson, Maggette, Monta, Azuibuke, Randolph. All of them will share the SG/SF spots. Did I miss anyone? Marco doesn’t really deserve the time over any of those guys anyway.

PF and C you got Andris and then a few people playing as undersized ‘big men’ or out of position. Turiaf is all hustle and will fit in, but not a good rebounder and has no offense. Andris, hopefully, won’t get the short end of the minutes-stick from Nelson again, but after him there are no true big men who can really make a starting-worthy difference.

What you have are a lot of decent players who are all as decent as each other and no clear roles to create a rotation out of. For the team to be deep, you need Marco, Turiaf, Randolph, Wright, Marcus, Monta (as a PG), uhhh who else, you need all of them to make sizeable to MAJOR steps up in their game.

Portland has some of the same problems, as we’ll be relying on young guys who haven’t played an NBA game yet to give us our depth. Bayless and Rudy Fernandez PROJECT to be very good, but we gotta see it. Same with Oden (though I have no doubt that Oden will be Oden. He is a freak of nature).

You got guys with potential, but aside from Monta and Randolph there isn’t a lot of reason to think the others are about to explode into solidness.
