Sources: Monta Ellis interested in the Knicks
It's happening guys. It's happening. If there's one team out there that will throw ridiculous amounts of money to someone, it's the New York Knicks! They're starting to gain interest in Monta, and Monta supposedly has interest in them and playing for D'Antoni. I could see him going there, it would be better for his future considering the coach and the future of that team is looking brighter now with better management.
http://www.newsday.com/sports/basketball/ny-spknix045751758jul04,0,1521258.story
The source said the potential of an Ellis-Jamal Crawford backcourt "would be dynamic" in the Mike D'Antoni system. Both players averaged 20 points per game this past season. A person close to Ellis said the lightning-quick guard "would be very interested in the Knicks" and especially playing for D'Antoni.
Oh and if you think we're free from the Knicks wrath:
A person with knowledge of the situation said nine teams have made inquiries about Ellis. The Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers have shown the most interest.
Summer of HELL for the W's.
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Dear Abby
Im Monta Ellis, i have pimples and barely 22. I have a concern. I have just been handed the keys to the family business by my big brother who left town. I could leave town too because some company is offering me a lot of money just a little bit less than what I would make if I stayed home.
I could stay home but with my brother leaving, Im just scared that people might see that I cant really do the job well. I mean i did great last year because my big brother allowed me to have fun while working and he made everything easy for me. All the attention was on my big brother who has a gregarious larger than life personality which allowed me to blossom. Dunno if I could succeed when all the attention is focused on me. What will i do if two or three people are badgering me? where do i pass the buck to?
Do I really have what it takes to run this company on my own? Or could I go out of town to that new company and be part of a team where I could blend in and do my job instead of staying here and be the one they expect me to be not?

NY media mention this “person close to Monta” that he “is very interested” to play to the Knicks. According to that source, everybody wants to play for the Knicks. Can’t they be more creative for once?

Hmm. NY has the MLE to offer. Cleveland has the MLE to offer. Miami has the MLE to offer. How exactly are any of these teams going to throw money at him?

i'm still wondering
why we havent signed monta yet! if mullin love him sooooo much wats taking so long? do they want to lose our best player? again?
by hyphy cowboy on Jul 4, 2008 10:20 AM PDT 0 recs
They are probably waiting on Brand. If we signed Monta before Brand’s decision than we have to withdraw our offer. However, if Brand is signed first, than Monta can be taken care of easier.

It's all about trying to fill out the roster before resigning Monta
In order to sign players, the Warriors need to be under the salary cap. In order to resign Monta & Beans, the W’s need to be under the luxury tax cap (and they don’t really need to… the owner is just too cheap to exceed it).
Anyways, no signing can commence before July 9.

Again, they need pretty much all their salary cap room to sign a Brand. So until he makes a decision and the W’s still have hope, they have to keep as much salary cap room as possible. I’m sure Monta understands. He’ll get his chunk of change.

A) it’s still the moratorium. We can’t sign anyone yet. No one can. Baron hasn’t signed anywhere. Brand hasn’t signed anywhere. No deals are legal yet. It’s all just in principle.
B) as soon as we sign Ellis, his new salary is on the books. Right now, he counts for a bit less than $1mil towards the cap. When he signs, that goes up, up, up. It eats away at the cap room we’ll have once Baron departs for the Clips. Signing him early would be S-T-U-P-I-D.
C) We can’t lose him if the team is willing to match. We retain his rights as a restricted free agent. The worst case scenario is somone else making an offer to Monta that he signs an offer sheet to because this puts him on our books immediately. See b) above.

What are the players options in this situation?
If NYC wants Montay and Montay wants NYC and prefers to play there for less how can he make it happen? Sign a one year deal? Sign and request trade?? etc. ????

If he wants to go somewhere else and is willing to take less money, he has to accept our qualifying offer, play here for another year at the minimum and then walk in a year as an unrestricted free agent. He has no other option if he is hell bent on leaving GS. He can sign and request a trade, but it’s a request.
If GS wants him in a GS uniform this year, there’s zero he can do about it save quit the sport altogether.

luxury tax
is no longer an issue when it comes to the knickerbockers…. could be a ploy but be concerned….
all ny has to do is trade their moveable assets to teams that are almost there or rebuilding ones to clear a lil bit more of salary… hey if baron left town anything can happen right?

Um… I thought Monta wanted more than 10 mil a year, while the are like WWAAAAAYYYYYY above the cap. They would need to trade all their bad contracts to get that much under the luxury tax.

is 5 mil isnt it? Zach randolph to the Bobcats for a pack of cigarettes and Jordan’s old UNC practice shorts? to the Grizzlies? Malik rose to the nets? i dunno but if i was monta , NY is definitely an option. Why stay in Oakland when I could be EXPOSED as a better Tony Delk?

So you’re telling me he’ll get less exposure in NY, the media capital of the world. If he goes there we’‘ll hear about him every night on espn for the rest of his long and promising career. Do you really think he’s Tony Delk, when the last guy to come around with Monta’s skillset is Allen Iverson? Notice he is only 22. Sure he has his faults, but thats just being picky and its over looking all the stuff he can do spectacularly.

ok dude
im not gonna go into an all out flame war with you because the last time i did it (about how fans affect player’s performance etc,) it went into overdrive.
Monta is a talent yes. Dont get me wrong I LIKE THE KID. But is he really a number 1 guy? When I mean number 1 someone you build around? Someone that would grab life by the horns (sorry dodge), someone you would seek out for interviews? The alpha dog is he? someone with a strong enough personality to be the MAN? If i could give Monta’s talent to stephen jack maybe….How much are you willing to pay for this kid? 15 mil? Baron’s effect in his game can never be discounted. Has Monta ever seen a double team? Ok i admit comparing him to Tony Delk is being an ass but Iverson really?
In NY, he will be one of the guys to be blamed if they continue to suck…..Randolph, DiAntoni, Walsh, Marbury, Crawford, etc. here?? Him and him alone….

Oh my god instead of bringing up facts you’re now giving weird scenarios and bashing his personality. He saw plenty of double teams when two years ago both Baron and J-rich were injured and he was able to keep the team afloat enough for them to make that miraculous run. If there is one trait we all know Monta has is his boldness. He goes into the lane can get knocked down, hurt and laying face down for 30 minutes like last year. Yet, he still goes into the lane, and develops a mid range jumpshot and is now an offensive machine.
Stop being so god damn biased!!!

Haha, Maybe he shoulda gone to college before trying the NBA?
Montay’s got talent but not Iverson type talent. Iverson has great ball handling skills, a good long range shot and excellent court vision. Montay is more of a slasher/see the basket score type of guy, if it isn’t there he don’t create it.

Clear a little bit more room? Have you seen where they stand right now? They don’t have many moveable assets and they’re about 50mil above where they’ll need to be to make an offer for Monta. These rumors are all a product of the self importance of the NY tabloid papers and the drooling idiots who read and write the rags.

“could just be a ploy” – agents. its NY afterall, how the hell did they get Ewing again?
but with that said what is Monta’s market value? Is 11 million a year too much? 15?? Are we willing to pay this kid 13m for 6 years? whats a reasonable number for the folks around here. I say not more than 10. i think this is a much better contention point for everyone around here

true, knicks aren't afraid to exceed the cap, but...
because they’re already WAY above luxury cap, every new dollar they spend counts them another dollar in luxury tax. so to get Monta for $10MM, they’d have to actually spend 2x that ($20MM) per year, all told. not inconceivable, but big time money… unless they get the ONE game changer for their franchise, their top priority still has to be TRADING AWAY salary. or at least holding their breath until “star”bury goes away.

Nah, If we were too lose Monta coupled with the failure to sign a big name, we shouldn’t be in the NBA. Drop us to the D-League or the PAC-10. Make my 4th of July and sign Monta right now. To see this all blow up the past week was enough.

For sure
Monta is worth way more than Kevin Martin. Martin did average 3.5 points more than Monta(23.7 for K-mart, 20.2 for Monta) but here are some other facts: Monta is a better rebounder, passer, and is less turnover prone than K-mart, and the numbers are drastically different in the second half of the season. Not only that, but K-mart relies on FT as over 50% of his offense and only thrives if the refs are whistle happy. And the big thing is Monta as improved at a better rate than k-mart and is 3 years younger. Monta has never been given the keys to running the point before, so we should not be so quick to judge, especially when people were claiming he wasn’t athletic enough for the nba, just a few years back.

Mid-Level Exception
This allows a team over the salary cap to sign one player up to a given amount, the mid-level. In other words, no big contract, just a medium-sized one.
