I guess this is why they keep raising ticket prices? I can't tell who's dumber. The Warriors' front office and ownership who has been to the playoffs ONCE in the past 14 years thanks to a plethora of silly blunders or fans like us who keep them floating in green despite their obvious incompetence.

Seriously considering
boycotting games. I am a dedicated fan andI live in Monterey, and it’s a 2hr drive to the arena. I never get tickets unless they are lower bowl. Watching the prices increase over the years was okay when we had a playoff caliber team. I am not interested in dishing out $150.00 a seat, $50.00 in gas and $100.00 in food and beer to support a club that raises prices and can’t keep fan favorite players in town. There was nothing more fun than watching Baron and J-Rich dominate the court, (respectively). (Not a J-Rich trade harp).
I am not saying that I won’t go. But I average 5 games a season. If they look like they are going back into a drought, then why should the fans pay? Ya rebuild. That’s great. I’ll be watching in HD from home on my 60”. I will be a fan with a plan. Not willing to dish out the extra $10 mil to help the team? Might have lost the star player because you weren’t willing to spend a little? Well guess what? I am not willing to dish out $400+ dollars to fill your pocketbook! LOWER TICKET PRICES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tough situation...
When the renewal option came in for this season, it jumped so high I had to decline my renewal. No harm done, I’ll go 2 as many games as I can… with the rise in price of just about everything- I’m sure it has fans limiting the number of games they go 2 next season regardless of our current situation.
...It’s been like 2 months since I actually bought a full tank of gas… lol, 20 bucks barely gets me up half- and I drive a scion :-P

Not that it’s a bad thing :) But aye honest to God if you’re a Warriors fan a true Warriors fan you’re going to still go to those games because you love them so much. I guess I must be blind but ever since I was little even if we were definitely going to lose the game I’d still watch the whole game just to watch these guys play. I guess its too much pride.

Nothing? I think the 06-07 season was remarkable.
Also, last season was pretty great, any other year (literally) that’s a playoff team. I don’t consider that nothing considering what the team did with Jamison, J-Rich, Nick Van Exel or Speedy Claxton for that matter. You can’t place a value on a series of moves solely on who we have now because of them and disregard any and all success and enjoyment we got a long the way.
Would you give Baron the contract he got from the Clippers? That’s what it would have taken to keep him. Anyone remember that the contract he just opted out of was uninsured because of his injury history?
Would you have kept Gilbert? Me too, And so would the Warriors if the were legally able to match the Wizard’s offer. Hence the Arenas rule.
Richardson for Wright and cap space and the unused TPE? I don’t think that was a such a bad move considering he was a somewhat redundant piece and also what they had in Ellis and what they thought they had in MP2, Barnes, Buke and Belinelli. Not a bad move to trade a replaceable part for an athletic big with braces and some trade flexibility.
Jamison for cap space? Ok, maybe not. I didn’t like that move then either and I hate Njara’s stupid ass hair. Oh, and his game too.
So that was somewhat dumb. The Dampier, Foyle, Dunleavy, Murphy, Caffy contracts were pretty bad. The Mitch Richmond for Billy Owens trade was the worst.
I would argue that the Warriors have actually become smarter and have made fairly decent decisions recently. Especially since Mullin got his new brain (Nelson). So I don’t think you can attribute letting Baron get away to the long string of bad moves that preceded the Baron Davis acquisition. That culminating in the 07 playoffs, IMO, represented a break from the string.
And yes, I did read your Cosellout post about how the Knicks decision to disregard the luxury tax is actually pretty smart considering their marketplace. I agree with a lot of that dude writes. The fact is that Cohan doesn’t allow Mullin to go into the luxury tax. Sucks for us, but those are fairly standard parameters. It doesn’t make the franchise stupid.
BTW: They raise ticket prices because fans (not me) keep buying them. So, who’s dumb?

My bad
Bad and confusing wording on my part.
I will NEVER forget the 2k6-2k7 season. No matter how terribly run this team is, no one can ever take that away from us:
Unbelievable, Unforgettable, and Unstoppable Baby!
It was remarkable.
You can’t place a value on a series of moves solely on who we have now because of them and disregard any and all success and enjoyment we got a long the way.I agree completely. I mean that they just lost Baron and got nothing in return just like Arenas. At least with J-Rich they got a good forward prospect although the jury’s still out.
BTW: They raise ticket prices because fans (not me) keep buying them. So, who’s dumb?
Guilty as charged.
Don’t get me wrong I love the Warriors, but they aren’t exactly owned and run by the best the NBA has to offer. I consider the Bay Area an elite place with some of the brightest and most competent people in the world. There’s a lot of skill and pride. Aside from Don Nelson that just isn’t true with Cohan’s Warriors. It’s an embarrassment.

I'll agree with the relative talent aspect
The Warriors don’t seem to have taken advantage of the fact that the front office salaries don’t count against the cap. Mullin was clueless until Nelson arrived. My hope is that Mullin actually learns from what Nelson has been telling him to do as a GM and makes better decisions going forward.
All they have to do is look across the parking lot and see what the A’s have done with a superior front office.

Dumb and Dumber: St. Jean and Mullin
Who do you think is dumber? St. Jean or Mullin? Draw your own conclusions.
What the Ws need is to sever its umbilical cord with the Run TMC era. By that I mean for them to stop hiring people like St. Jean, Nelson and Mullin to run the team into the ground. Nelson doesn’t coach rookies and tries to wring every last drop out of the vets. There’s no balance to his coaching. St. Jean was a nice guy but practically retarded in the way he ran the team. Jason Caffey for $35 million????, etc…... Mullin drank from the breast of St. Jean and is following in his footsteps. Inability to keep guys like Jamison and Arenas, but lavishing big money on guys like Dumb-leavy and Murphy is what’s wrong with this team. They have a knack for signing those who shouldn’t be signed and letting go of those who are now helping other teams to the playoffs. It sickens me to see this pattern repeat itself every few years. I started following the Warriors back when George Karl was coach and even though they sucked, they never pissed me off like the teams from the past 10 years. I want everyone out!! Nelson, Mullin, anyone who has anything to do with Run TMC. No more of this Nellie brain-washed front office thinking. It’s incredible the amount of praise lavished upon him for virtually destroying the Warriors the first time around. Looks like he’s at it again. I don’t blame Baron for leaving. The Warriors front office is a bunch of disloyal and ungrateful SOBs. Baron brought the fans so much and unified so many people and gave Oakland something to be proud of and now, everything is gone and we’re back to square one. This new found stinginess Mullin has taken up is pure idiocy. He’s much like the subprime market: first, give anyone and everyone max dollars (Foyle, etc.), then something happens, and all of a sudden, cut off everyone, including those who are legitimately good for business (BD). All the vibration from those buzz cuts over the years have turned Mullin’s brains into mush. Ungrateful, disloyal and cheap. Sounds like Billy Beane, but at least the A’s are competitive most of the time and knows how to bring along young talent.
I’m telling all of you, Webber has started a new curse on the Warriors. Baron was our knight in shining armor and he broke it. But too bad Nelson had to bring Webber back to fulfill his fantasy, therefore, cursing the Warriors once again. A hero shall rise from the ashes 14 years from now to save us once again.
1993: Webber arrives, Webber leaves, Warriors miss playoffs, Nelson abandons team.

What kills me
Two things that bother me the most:
1) During the past few seasons, when Baron was out, the Dubs seemed incapable of initiating an offense. They would lose 20pt leads like fat kids lose healthy lunches made by their mother…when in fact they traded their tasty 4 piece meal for a bag of chips and a soda…..but we really didn’t get anything for Baron but cap space….which is kind of like empty calories. Anyways, this was because of leadership and control. One thing that was great about Baron was that he actually had something of a college education, (2 years @ UCLA), which was respectable. No offense to Monta, but his knowledge revolves comlpetely around basketball. Will the players respect him based solely on his talent? They do for S-Jax…to an extent.
2) We can’t watch games right now to see how the dubs deal without BD.
Who are going to be the Team Captians this year?
S-Jax
Monta
Harrington (if he’s not traded and Barnes doesn’t com back) + (might pump him up enough to take control at the 4, that and competing for minutes with Hendrix and BR)

psuedo sob story
To be honest, the current assault/whining by some here, directed at the current GS front office, is getting pathetic, and is largely undue.
I’ve been a die hard warriors fan for as long or longer than most here, so I understand the ‘expect the worst’ mentality (even when it obscures reality). But we must not put the past sins of the front office onto the current: Mullin et. al does have a mixed record, but for some time now (maybe since the baron trade) it has been generally good, and to the minds of many who actually know what they are talking about, good as of late, including the baron situation.
Yes, it does suck that we lost baron for nothing, as we won’t be very good in the immediate future. But if we had to pay what the clips had to, in order to keep baron, then I say our loss stands to be addition by subtraction, and here is why:
(a) (b): (a)This team is built for 3 years from now, not right now. And it is being built to be a championship contender, not a dangerous low seed (b), which is really what we have been the last few years. The west is deep, and if 50 wins doesn’t make you a contender, and you have to go all out all year to guarantee you get in to the playoffs at all (and even then might not), then it is probably better to reload. Take the current A’s into consideration: Beane figured that the AL west would be rough this year (didn’t turn out to be true, but everyone thought so), and in any case, with the money detroit, nyy, boston, laa, and seattle were throwing, it would be tough to compete, and the roster as it was was good, but not going to compete against those teams. So he traded haren, swisher, and is really looking to next year, or more likely the year after that. Though we aren’t trading baron, the situation may well be quite similar. The baron, sjax, monta, harrington core wasn’t going to take us far enough, and the monta, biedrins, wright and randolph core is extremely young and could really turn out to be devastating, and hopefully it will be.
c: Baron, as fun as he is to watch, and as good as he can be, isn’t worth what he thinks. Yes, he played a lot of minutes, but compare him to other stars: it really wasn’t all that bad: he requires more rest time than some others. Also, which is more likely:(a)he plays near full seasons the next 4 or 5 years at a high level, (b) he plays well, but misses 20 games or so every year or every other year, or© his body totally breaks down. Given his history, b and c seem far more likely. Remember, if BWright and Randolph pan out, they are going to have their payday toward the middle to last years of the baron contract, and if baron is b or c, then, it is an immovable object we do not need, at all!
d: Monta may yet turn out to be a decent PG. I think the jury is still out here, as he showed some real PG ability the last quarter of the season, when he was the warriors best player. Remember, monta initiated rather often then, and showed a much nicer handle, and consistent vision than he had previously. Now I don’t know if he will turn out to be PG, but there is enough potential here to pan out as a PG combo guard, and not just a small 2, so we shouldn’t pigeon hole him too quickly.

Please take a look at the list.....
I respect the fact that you have your own opinion regarding this issue. But please take a look at the list below and explain to me what would give you the idea that the Warriors front office knows how to retain talent? They’ve squandered so many high picks just in the last 10 years alone with no return on investments that to not hold the them accountable is sheer lunacy. To think that the Warriors can grow its current core into something better than what we had the past 2 seasons is nothing but a pipe dream. The front office has always been the poster boys of incompetence. What big name FA would want to sign with a team like this?

Vince Carter – gave him away with cash
This comment speaks to your whinyness. You’re telling half truths and white lies just to support your opinion that the FO has been and still is stupid and worthless. We TRADED Vince Carter for the guy we really wanted, at a lower salary no less. And Jamison was/is no slouch. Would you rather have that impressive talent that got bored in Toronto and started telling his opponents what plays his team was running just so he would get traded? Please.
Mistakes were made, there’s no denying that. Foyle was given an overly huge contract, as were Jason, Troy, and Dunleavy. All of the bad contracts are off the books except Foyle’s which will come off next summer. Stop living in the distant past and realize that the drafts have been significantly better since 2001.
We lost Gilbert because of a stupid rule. Stop griping about it or blaming the FO. Not everything is their fault. A lot of the mistakes were their fault, but there have been few mistakes made going forward.
Finally, after Baron plays through 3 injury riddled seasons with a few spats with Dunleavy Sr., I don’t expect to see you lauding the FO on not signing Baron to a long term contract. I don’t think it’s coincidence that Baron played a full season in this past year, a contract year for him. Is Baron the Edgerrin James of the NBA? Humm… let’s see:
Promising career derailed by a series of injuries? Check.
Helped rebuild a downtrodden franchise (Colts/Warriors)? Check.
Left because of $$ issues to team with an even worse history of losing (Cardinals/Clippers)? Check.
Humm…
by Dubs fan in Boston on Jul 7, 2008 6:59 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually, we traded Carter for Jamison and had to pay $500k in the process. Jamison, as the #4 pick, received a larger salary than Carter, picked 5th, though in neither case was the rookie deal nor the 500k significantly limiting in what it allowed the team to do. It still looks like that was a swindle, small as it may have been, by Nelson who supposedly scared the Warriors into making a deal with Tor to take Jamison 4th when they were ready for Carter at that slot, and meanwhile Nelson was pondering the swindle of the century in swapping Tractor Traylor for Nowitzski. It didn’t really matter in the long run, but it did make Warrior management look like the incompetent boobs they were at the time.

“Would you rather have that impressive talent that got bored in Toronto and started telling his opponents what plays his team was running just so he would get traded?”
No, I prefer a 32 year old journeyman headcase PG like Van Exel and Popeye for Jamison. That one was classic St. Jean.
“Mullin et. al does have a mixed record, but for some time now (maybe since the baron trade) it has been generally good.”
Let’s not forget, AL (coming off the bench and nearing the end of his tenure) was the centerpiece of that trade. Nobody expected Jackson to have such a big impact. In fact, most of the people on here were ready to run him out of town before he had even arrived. So Jack is a total accident and not due to Mullin’s “genius.” And hiring Monty to coach? Another blunder. Getting Baron for next to nothing was nice, but ain’t karma a b**?
“Mistakes were made, there’s no denying that. Foyle was given an overly huge contract, as were Jason, Troy, and Dunleavy. All of the bad contracts are off the books except Foyle’s which will come off next summer. Stop living in the distant past and realize that the drafts have been significantly better since 2001.”
Distant pass? Buddy, this is happening right now. It’s like clockwork. The drafts might be good, but what do we have to show for them two, three years down the road?? They’re great at drafting all-stars for other teams, but not very good at retaining and building around talent.
“Stop griping about it or blaming the FO. Not everything is their fault. A lot of the mistakes were their fault, but there have been few mistakes made going forward.”
I’m not saying everything, just 95%.
And “rebuilding” is not a word that applies to a franchise like this. It applies to teams that have been relevant. Lakers have rebuilt, the Heat is rebuilding. I don’t have a word for what the Ws are doing…...But please continue playing the role of the devil’s advocate because I’m enjoying this discussion.

overstating your case (by misrepresentation) again.
you say
“Let’s not forget, AL (coming off the bench and nearing the end of his tenure) was the centerpiece of that trade. Nobody expected Jackson to have such a big impact. In fact, most of the people on here were ready to run him out of town before he had even arrived. So Jack is a total accident and not due to Mullin’s "genius." “
Well, you are filling in information you aren’t privy to. Some Media members (not all) thought that the centerpiece was Al, and nobody expected Jackson to have that impact, but that doesn’t mean the warriors and Mullin thought so. It does appear that Al was the centerpiece, but that doesn’t mean the warriors were just taking on stephen’s contract to make the deal work or so; they could have just as easily been enthralled with his game (and very well might have been). And no one is saying genius here (a strawman fallacy, btw), only that the trade has worked out, and that is to Mullins credit, and it is, no matter how you want to misrepresent things.

What was he most famous for up to that point? Being a great player (which he has turned out to be) or for the motor city brawl and the nightclub shooting? Even if he wasn’t a throw in, let’s not pretend he was as coveted as AL in that trade. The fact is, he’s turned out to be a great team leader and a model citizen. I do commend him for both.

a few things
first off, the issues I was addressing does not include the question ‘does golden state know how to retain talent’. Rather, it is what is the wisest move given the current situation of the warriors and the nba. Nevertheless, I will address your question anyhow.
For one, you have to break the list down into front office regime eras, and then keep in mind that it is fallacious to blame one regime for another’s errors unless causation can be demonstrated (yes cohan remains, and yes he deserves blame, but that is a somewhat different issue). Let us look at mullin era, at least since he has been the main one calling the shots(2004):
you are rushing on the belinelli reference, and there is only rumors that kosta is gone. Your list also fails to include BWright, since he doesn’t fit what you want to say.
As for many others, they were a part of the package that brought s.jax and harrington (ike, murphy, dunleavy), and as a trade, that isn’t a a loss per say.
Also, your inclusion of biedrins and ellis as FA’s may make your list look better, but it isn’t really relevant, as they are unlikely to be gone. Kelenna could be included along these lines as well.
you should then include dfish who was given away for salary cap space (proved to a be a wise move though).
This isn’t to say mullin is spotless, of course, only to address the question you raised. It seems (some of the contract offers rumored of-save brand-not withstanding) that Mullin has learned from his previous error of giving overly rich contracts, but he made many mistakes with his early contracts. The trades have worked out well, so far (jury out on bwright), and draft has worked out well except for POB. (kosta is a ?? at this point as well, and is a 2nd round pick so not much loss if he doesn’t pan out).
by haverecords on Jul 8, 2008 1:31 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
no need to answer anything.....
The erratic offers to Arenas and Brand says it all about Mullin. Not exactly cool under pressure. He knows he has season ticket holders to answer to. We lost our marquee gimp, so let’s try to sign another gimp. He’s lucky neither one took the bait. We’ll see how Maggette pans out….he might actually be a good signing. I’m done bagging on Mullin. You’ve stated your case, I’ve stated mine. All questions will be answered in the up-coming season…..

This team is built for 3 years from now, not right now
Too bad they can’t delay the games for 3 years then? The fact is we gotta play in real time not future time, three years from now what will your mantra be? Wait till 5 years?

Forced
No, Hopefully my mantra will be “ah, I remember those short-sighted fools”...and their forced skepticism.

"ah, I remember those short-sighted fools"...and their forced skepticism.
You can’t have that one, it belongs to Al Gore.

I hope we really, really suck this year, and that the younger players all get a lot of minutes so we can see what we have, and that we trade Harrington (who hopefully will play better in this contract year) for something that will help us in the future whether it be a pick or a player, and that we don’t get screwed in the lottery.
And then, our return from Baron opting out will be a point guard for the future, possibly Holliday or Rubio, (I think Holliday may be 6-4 too but I know Rubio is, so we could get that big PG to pair with Monta) and a more game ready group of players which translates to more depth.
I really think CJ Watson could be something, probably just a backup, but a good backup and putting him in the starting PG role would guarantee a lot of losses, a lot of experience and more ping pong balls.
Of course, this is all before the season. The problem is that when I watch the Warriors play I still won’t be over last year’s odd phenomenon of expecting them to win. It will be hard to adjust to a losing team, but I think it will pay benefits in the future. 2010 to be exact, when we hopefully are turning the corner right when the fabled offseason comes up. I’m still dreaming LeBron big.

The preseason tank?
Don’t you think that would be a little too obvious? I advocate the Miami tactic of firing the coach so Mullin can be the coach/GM and then leave the team to go watch March Madness, you know, to scout talent and stuff (cuz we can’t afford scouts).
Should we play Monta/Beans and the rest of the starters extra minutes during the preseason so we can complain that they’re getting tired and worn out when they “tweak a hammy” in January and sit out the rest of the season?
Sigh… the world is not coming to an end.
