No News Is Good News...
As far as I can tell the longer it takes to hear from Brand, the better. I hope someone responds and tells me , intelligently, why I am wrong. I have become far too optimistic about this Brand deal. I have written mutliple times this week about all the talking heads having it a for gone conclusion that Brand will sign back with the Clippers. I have argued that the amount of money he would be leaving behind is enormous, and it would be a huge gamble to try and win with the Clippers who never will compete for a title as they are constituted now. Let alone, have no history of wining or building a winner or commitment ot building a winner. Add all this on top of the gamble that Baron is both motivated and healthy.
My point is this, reports have Brand in Philidelphia trying to bring the 76ers into the bidding. Now, there is no way in hell that the CLippers will match any offer. Sterling has spent more recently but has never and wil never go into the luxury tax. Why would Brand try and drive up the price if he is just gonna go to LA and take what they offered in the first place. And more to my point, If he is waiting until Wednesday to sign and not make a verbal agreement, one would think it is because he wants to not get anymore backlash fromt he media. He would take a double hit both with a verbal agreement with the W's and then turn around 4 days later and then sign officially. It only makes sense to wait and go through it once. If he was signing with the Clippers why wait, just do it now and stop all the questions and stress. He is obviously considering the offer, and the longer he waits the more likely, in my mind, that the Warriors actually land a stud PF that will put us into contention and crush the hopes of Baron all at once. Baron got his $ so he isn't hurt, but finally we get the upper hand and wouldn't that be a great story.
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Clippers deserve better from Brand, Kaman
Getty Images
Typically for the Clippers, at the end of what should have been a gorgeous summer week, we have been left with two gloomy thoughts. Elton Brand as a Golden State Warrior. Chris Kaman as a German.
The poor Sterlings just can’t seem to get any Gluck, their best player threatening to walk away from his reputation while their most promising player takes complete leave of his senses wrote Los Angeles Times columnist Bill Plaschke.
“It’s always something,” said Coach Mike Dunleavy.
In this case, two somethings, both of which should be nothings. Brand should not sign with the Golden State Warriors, not even for $20 million more than the Clippers’ offer, not if he is true to his image and his word. Kaman should not play for the German national team, even though his grandparents were German, because stronger loyalties should lie with his health and his $52-million Clippers contract.
After the celebrated agreement with Baron Davis, neither of these things should even be an issue.
Shouldn’t the rest of the fellas be excited about the arrival of a star?
Isn’t this how the Boston Celtics just won a championship?

I hate when writers say people shouldn’t take the money, cause lord knows they would shine my shoes for 5 bucks.

who knows...
Brand could be waiting this out for any number of reasons. From a public image standpoint, given the fact that the guy probably has one more contract to sign after this one, he might not wanna spite teams by acting like he is not even CONSIDERING a maximum type offer. There could be dozens of other reasons why he is waiting. We don’t know. There are a couple of things we do know, however. First, he was QUICK to come out and say he was only opting out to give the clippers more cap room. He surely would have been able to decipher the fact that other teams would be offering him huge contracts when he did opt out, yet he still said he was going to sign with the clips. Next, my opinion is that he pushed the clips to sign b. diddy and forced their hands in a contract that will cripple their payroll 3 years down the road. Bottom line, a whole bunch of people did a whole bunch of things based on his word and the general consensus is that he is a man of “character”. The factors just don’t weigh in our favor. Don’t get me wrong I would LOVE to see this, but i think the best way to do it is to convince yourself its not gonna happen, and if it does then…yeeeeeeeeeee! and if it doesn’t (which it probably won’t) then… Oh well.
P.S. on the off chance we do get him, I say we send him packing to Miami and get Marion year asap.

“It was just to clear room to get another player, but you have to understand. They drove a dumptruck full of money up to my house. I’m not made of stone!”
No offers can be official and the cap figures aren’t out. Brand doesn’t know the actual size of the offer that the Clippers can give him yet to make a reliable decision, though waiting does seem to suggest that money is factoring heavily it it all.

Could he be waiting while they try to work out a deal with another player? Maybe they have better cap situation before he signs?

He has nothing to gain by saying anything at this point. If he returns to LA, they don’t have dough to get any other players, so it’s not an advantage of him coming back so they can continue to upgrade. The Clippers cap situation is such that they’re in worse shape until after he signs under almost all scenarios.
Remember. No one has signed ANYWHERE yet. The deals are all in principle until Wednesday. Nothing is yet binding.

"They can trade me," Bonds said. "I don't think they will, though. It's not like I want to be traded, man. I'm a Giant. I'm stuck here till the end."

well...
im guessing the wait has more to do with the holiday weekend. i agree with sarangc, were probably looking at a 10% chance we land him, but mullin had to at least thow him and arenas(before he re upped) a bone strictly for PR image.

Kawakami...
...who I think it’s safe to say knows more about the W’s dealings than anyone, says the longer Brand is silent, the more obvious it is that he is trying to find a way not to come to the W’s. If he wanted the $, he would’ve taken it already.
by Lifelong on Jul 6, 2008 7:31 PM PDT 0 recs
Well, I’ll agree that Kawakami has a better ear in the Warriors’ office, but I’m not sold on his powers of contract deduction. Since he doesn’t appear to understand much about the CBA, I’ll avoid reading too much into his prognostications regarding contracts. Brand doesn’t know what the offers really are at this point. He has no way of judging the net loss by returning to the Clippers yet. It’s always about money to some degree. How much money is the question and that isn’t something anyone has the answers to yet.

Who’s making him come to the W’s? If he wants to stay in LA he can just do it.
If the plan is to get Boom and Brand together for a run then my guess is there’s another piece of the puzzle waiting to fall into place and it will make sense when that happens?

Mullin on tilt
come on brand is coming off an injury too. Why throw all this cash around to lure Brand. He shouldn’t have have lowballed Baron. Don’t get me wrong I love Brand’s game but look our roster. Biedriens, Wright, Harrington, Jackson, Hendrix, Randolph, plus Brand. We have no PG. unless Mullin is going to trade someone, then it will make more sense. The two hardest positions to fill are PG and center. Baron is a top 5 PG. Brand is not a center. A good player but will he make our players better ?
by sonny parker on Jul 7, 2008 9:28 AM PDT 0 recs
Will Brand make our players better? Probably. Talent wins in the NBA. He’ll provide something we don’t have now, a post presence who can be depended on to score. He’ll probably do this without taking much away from Biedrins’ offense. Since he rebounds, he’ll allow the defense to be more effective when they aren’t able to grab steals since you need rebounds to complete defensive stops after missed shots. We’ll still need some point help, but there’s not much on the free agent market there. Better to see about a trade than toss money after third rate “solutions.”
