Warriors might sign Turiaf to offer sheet

According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the warriors are reportedly to sign Ronny Turiaf to an offer sheet for 4 years at 4 million dollars per year. I don't know if this is true or not, but generally Stein is a pretty reliable source of information.

"Although Golden State still has a huge hole at point guard after also losing Baron Davis to the Clippers, sources said that the Warriors are also preparing to sign Los Angeles Lakers restricted free agent Ronny Turiaf to a four-year offer sheet in the $4 million-a-year range, which the Lakers would have seven days to match." -Stein

But

Lakers are already 4 million over luxury and only have 10 players signed. So is Turiaf really worth 8 Million to them just for this year?

yes.

he should be a warrior by next week.

by Dubsack on Jul 9, 2008 12:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Anyway...

(and this is a reach), Baron backs out and works a sign and trade to the Lake Show?

Baron/Harrington for Turiaf (S&T)/Odom (last year of contract)/another player to make the numbers work (Ariza?/Mihm?)

Baron’s happy, goes to a real contender and back to LA. They don’t lose anything for except more money for Turiaf (more luxury tax). Warriors get the guy they want, and rent Odom for a year.

We would be looking at:

Ellis, Maggette, Jax, Odom, Biedrins

Wright, Turfiaf, Belinelli, Randolph, Hendrix, Watson, Buike

Warriors also targeting Dooling?

by GState21 on Jul 9, 2008 5:26 AM PDT up reply actions

If Turiaf has signed an offer sheet, this can’t happen. Offer sheet prevents a sign and trade.

by jae on Jul 9, 2008 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Do they really?

A few years ago… Joe Johnson signed an offer sheet with Atl and asked Phx not to match. Instead of letting Johnson go for free, they matched and received Diaw and draft picks in compensation. Isn’t this a similar situation?

ehh

I dont love Turiaf, but I guess we could use his size, hustle and boarding. Just that I was hoping that would be the role Hendrix would fill. Kinda hope L.A. matches this deal hindering their chances of adding another piece. Wouldnt it kinda rule out Vujacic returning though? Please dont tell me we have interest in Vujacic…if any one player could force me to abandon Warrior fanship is might be him.

by sam23 on Jul 8, 2008 11:59 PM PDT reply actions

lol

i don’t love him either but i do love his size hustle and boarding!! and he can finish fairly well. Turiaf is so much thicker than hendrix is Turiaf is a beast.

by Agent Zero on Jul 9, 2008 10:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh man...

If the Warriors signed Vujacic… I don’t know what I would do. I would just blur him out of games… find some way to paste a picture of Thunder on his face when he’s in team pictures or is playing in games. Vujacic is probably the MOST ANNOYING PLAYER IN THE WORLD!

by Mr. Monday Night on Jul 9, 2008 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

scary thought

heard Kawakami suggest the Warriors might be trying to bait the Lakers into retaining Turiaf at that salary when their real target is Vujacic. I really doubt thats true, but it still makes me incredibly nervous. I HATE Vujacic in the same way I hated Rick Fox and his slimy hair ‘do….maybe more.

by sam23 on Jul 9, 2008 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

he is exceptionally annoying but...

wouldn’t you want a guy like him (not him under any circumstances, everyone hates him too much), to piss off all of the warriors opponents and their fans? seems like the guy everyone throughout the rest of the league hates, but the home fanbase loves are a huge part of the great teams of this era. think rodman, fox, or bowen, or hell any of the spurs. naturally, these guys generally are not transferable from team to team (except rodman for some reason).

by cap'n hack on Jul 9, 2008 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Well... NO!

I wouldn’t want Fox or Bowen either. Both were important pieces to their championship teams… But I would be able to sleep at night knowing we had a Pietrus instead of a Bowen. They basically play the same type of game (defense… treys… bad ft%)

Vujacic… he’s just a different kind of annoying. Worse than a Mike Dunleavy Jr. kind of annoying. I stand by my comment of replacing Vujacic with Thunder in my mind should he come here.

by Mr. Monday Night on Jul 10, 2008 8:54 AM PDT up reply actions

if you asked lakers and spurs fans

a question like this before they got bowen or sasha, they would have said ‘no’ too. and don’t get me wrong, bowen is his own deal, he is dirty to the point where he isn’t the just team pest, he should be suspended with consistency. bowen tries to injure players routinely. i don’t want anyone like that on the team. but an obnoxious, in-your-face, jerk who would rile everyone outside of the bay up would be fun. it’s just that he needs to be a home grown, obnoxious, in-your-face, jerk, so we can all grow to appreciate him. even if no one else can.

naw Rose is a local guy

and Beasley had character questions. Heinrich isnt THAT bad. He’s not worth the contract he’s got, but he defends well and has a high basketball IQ. He cant shoot though and thats a major concern now considering we dont really have many guys who can hit from outside playing in a system that relies on the outside shot a lot.

by sam23 on Jul 9, 2008 11:16 AM PDT up reply actions

So...

Why didn’t we take Leon Powe two years ago? Why didn’t we grab Hardin? You’re way overplaying the “local guy” factor here. It’s not that important, just something ESPN likes to talk about.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Jul 9, 2008 11:22 AM PDT up reply actions

it wasnt a huge factor

but it probably played a role. That and Rose had just played in a national championship. And played a premier position. And the character questions around Beasley.

would anyone have guessed the lakers were a finals team with the supporting cast kobe started out with last year? no. he certainly didnt either by trying to be traded. truth is you never know, as long as you have a star, a team that can be scrappy and get the job done, and has chemistry. but thats why they play the games. you never know what is going to happen.

by dannyschmanny on Jul 9, 2008 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

to be fair

if gasol doesn’t come, they might’ve missed the playoffs. after bynum’s injury, they had gone on a losing streak till gasol joined the team and they were 32-8 w/ him.

By “scrappy” do you mean “had an undervalued Bynum who was much better than Kobe gave him credit for and when he went down, managed to replace him with a bonafide upper tier post player in Gasol, thus improving the ~.500 team they had been over the last few years (and returned to in the interim between Bynum’s injury and Gasol’s arrival”?

The team wasn’t anything more than middle of the road with Kobe and the “scrappy” players. It was the 7 footer in the middle, 7 footers significantly above average players, who were the difference between the .500 Lakers and the NBA finalists.

by superk1ng on Jul 9, 2008 12:28 AM PDT up reply actions

i dont like his contract

But i think Hinrich’s bad year last year was a bit of a fluke. The entire Bulls team had a terrible year and Kirk had 3 very good years and was even 2nd team all defense in 06-07. Maybe his awful year was the result of all the bad feelings going around on the Bulls. I mean his career isn’t over at the age of 27 is it?

That said, terrible contract.

by Nellieball on Jul 9, 2008 12:39 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm betting that

NJ is definitely interest in Al for two reasons.

1) He’s a Jersey boy.
2) His contract expires the year Lebron becomes a free agent.

The question is who do the W’s get in return? Yi movement!!! LOL

by joestar on Jul 9, 2008 12:41 AM PDT up reply actions

nenad krstic

he’s due for a renewal this year, and a raise, if they don’t want to take the hit, they could swap him with big al. al could probably fill a similar need (boards + midrange game) as a temp space filler until 2010. then they can decide if they want to keep him long term or let him expire.

question is how much they value nenad.
he’s young, and has a euro big man game…

by b.radley on Jul 9, 2008 9:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Depends who you ask...

I have read quite a few people who’s opinion I respect say that he doesn’t have the handle or the passing ability to play out on the wing regularly. I know Mullin threw out the notion that he could play the 4, 3 or even the 2 but I think that most of this talk is just because he is incredibly skinny.

The fact is that at this point he is too small to play the 4 and doesn’t have the skills to play the 3. So either way he has some work to do before he finds any significant time on the floor.

doesnt have the range to play a lot of minutes at the 3 right now

would be more accurate. I wouldnt be surprised if he starts out in Bakersfield to get some run. Our active roster spots seem to be filling up surprisingly fast actually.

by sam23 on Jul 9, 2008 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions

you are probably right...

but I have read a few guys who have watched him play more than I have that say his skills are overrated. They say that his handle and passing will be very good if he is a PF but not good enough to play on the perimeter all the time against NBA SF’s. Most people agree that he doesn’t have a shot outside of 15 feet. I’ve only seen him play twice so I can’t really comment with any authority on the subject but I guess we will find out in the next year or two.

My main point was that there is quite a bit of variety in the scouting reports on this guy. Some say he’s a three some say he’s a four but almost everyone says he won’t play much his first year. I would agree that some D-League run would do him some good.

Career 8.0 reb/36 — solid but unspectacular. Slightly better than Al Harrington (7.1) but nowhere near as good as Biedrins (11.7).

Otherwise, though, his #s are pretty good. Nice block totals (2.6/36 career), A:TO (nearly 2:1 last season), FG% (50 career), etc. He’s always a total pest, too: type of guy that’s annoying as hell if he’s on the other team, but endearing if he’s your guy.

I like this signing.

I’ve seen Turiaf play in LA, and he’s a real hustle and energy guy who will cheer for his team the entire time. We need Turiaf to add extra depth at PF/C. $4 million per year is definitely steep for someone who will probably less than 20 minutes per game, but like I said, we’re thin in the post and definitely could use muscle, defense, strength, rebounding and toughness at the 4 or 5. What we signed Turiaf for was a lot, but if it was anything lower, I think the Lakers would easily match.

I like the signing, though. Turiaf gives us depth, hustle, and rebounding which this team desperately needs. Now we need to sign a backup point or convince the Bulls they should get Al…

I’ve watched a lot of Laker games and I think he will be good for the team, despite a bit steep contract at $4 million/year. The Lakers are over the luxury tax, so we might have been able to get him for a bit less, though.

Farther than I had heard

I heard Turiaf was a possibility (mentioned him in last night’s article), but I didn’t realize things were so far along. He’ll be a nice backup PF/C, and I doubt the Lakers match. He would cost them $7-million next year because of luxury taxes!

Hope we still take a shot at Livingston....

At 6’7 with a sick handle and nice court vision, why not try and get him cheap? He needs to get in with MJ’s conditioning coach and work on strength and flexibility. The kid is young enough to recover and, with today’s technology anything is possible.

Good Signing

I’m not sure if there are real Warrior fans (who actually watch the games) posting on this topic, but this is a good signing for the Dubz…why?

We need big guys who can rebound, provide energy, block a few shots and defend and Turiaf can do that. Did you see him against the Warriors last year? He has range from about 15-18 feet, gets a lot of rebounds in his limited time and provides the hustle that any team would love.

We don’t need scorers anymore since we just signed Maggette. We need more depth at PF/C and Turiaf is a good backup to Wright just like Pree said. Sure $4 million might be a little too high for a guy who didn’t play a lot of minutes (b/c of Paul Gasol….hello), but Turiaf has been improving every season and it won’t be any different in the years to come for this guy and I’m sure he will get 15-20 minutes a game with the Dubz.

This will help the Warriors!!!

Its a little expensive, but we need a player like him

To all the GSOM-ers that were pushing for Joey Dorsey, Happy Bday!, We just signed a better version of him. He’s bigger, more polished, better dreads, and he’s French, tres bien!

4 Million is a quite a lot IMO, that’s going to take away from our ability to sign a big FA in 09 or 2010, I suppose Foyle’ contract coming off the books next year will help negate that though.

also

I can see why some people think this is a precursor to Al being shipped out, but maybe Turiaf is going to be slotted for more backup at the Center position. If Al was returning, I wouldnt be suprised to see the dubs pick up a low risk/ high reward type contract in Livingston

by q00pster on Jul 9, 2008 4:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Turiaf = Energy off the bench

Every Lakers game I watched this year(and they’re everywhere down here in Bakersfield) he was the first one off the bench to high five everyone, doesn’t take a play off and goes after the ball like the best of them. Perfect bench player, and I agree we might have overpayed a bit, but this isn’t Brian Cardinal. So let’s not react like it is. The Dubs do have to overpay to get good players to come to the bay. We got Maggette for cheap, and this signing just balanced it out.

thank you, finally a true fan

this is a decent signing by the warriors. i hated turiaf everytime the lakers are on tv, that’s because he’s the one doing all the dirty work in the low block, tipping away put backs, changing shots, hustling for rebounds and even has a decent jump shot. him and Hendrix will complement each other, giving the Warriors more variety in the line up. Hendrix is more defensive minded, a little more raw offensively; while Turiaf is a little more skilled offensively, can hit some jump shots like U. Haslem. Both will provide much needed engery at the PF position. This will make practices more competitive, driving both players to play their best.

Turiaf = Lack of Confidence

Turiaf is soft, he played at a mid-major on the college level against weak opponents. He has been more pom pons and high fives with the lakers then a solid player. The Warriors drafted Hendrix to snap rebounds and bang down low, have a little patience and confidence in your draft. If everything works out, Wright/Hendrix/Randolf/AB will be soaking up all the playing time, and we will have an overpaid big man with chicken legs on the bench. Plus, why has Monte’s deal not been worked out. In my opinion the front office is taking far to long to come to terms, they are throwing money at middle of the road talent, but are staling on superstar potential. Don’t piss Monte off, he is the next Arenas without the attitude.

by dso on Jul 9, 2008 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions

It's not a lot of money for a big man.

It’s a really good signing. You all keep forgetting that there are lots of big guys in the NBA who make more than Turiaf and are old, not going to ever get better, and no better than him. Rasho Nesterovic made 8M last season. RASHO NESTEROVIC. If we signed him for 4M, all of you would be crying for Mullin’s head, yet EVERY SINGLE GM IN THE NBA is willing to pay top dollar for decent big men.

Big men are a rare, valuable, commodity. You can’t just pick up some 6’10” guy off the street. You can do that with 6’5” guys. These guys get paid top dollar, the fact is that Turiaf is a decent youngish player who is being paid LESS THAN THE MLE. That’s a good signing. If the Lakers weren’t over the luxury tax already, they’d match the offer in an instant. He’s not going to be an everyday starter, he’s not going to be the savior of the team. He’ll be a solid, solid guy off the bench. We’re talking about a guy who came off the bench for 20 minutes a game for the WC Champions. Open your eyes people.

Good post.

Turiaf was always my favorite Laker by a mile, glad to see he’s coming up North.

by Gob on Jul 9, 2008 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions

The biggest problem with Turiaf...

He is nowhere near 6’10. He is a undersized power forward and a heavily undersized center. He does bring hustle & energy, but wasn’t that the reason why we drafted that Hendrix kid? He has a similar type of game, albeit with way less experience. I’m just not sold on this signing if we’re going to look toward reloading for the future unless Mullin is just putting a team together just to make a “competitive looking team.” A nice free agency crop is coming next season and a nice draft class is coming out as well. I just don’t like the direction of these rumors.

by Mr. Monday Night on Jul 9, 2008 9:54 AM PDT up reply actions

Dude... seriously

http://www.nba.com/playerfile/ronny_turiaf/

The guy’s 6’10” 250. What about that is undersized. I don’t know why you think it’s unnecessary to duplicate talents. Turiaf and Hendrix will both be on the bench a lot. I would really like it if everybody stopped clammoring for ROOKIES who aren’t even assured a spot on the roster because they were passed over 40 times by NBA teams. Hendrix is an interesting prospect. Let’s get him on the practice floor in training camp and see what he can and can’t do before anointing him the starting PF role. The Celtics played more NBA basketball games this last year than he’s played college games in his entire career. He’s not experienced, he hasn’t been completely focused on basketball, and he doesn’t have what it takes to jump in and play right now. Maybe in the future.

by the evil monkey on Jul 9, 2008 11:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Without shoes.

Pre-draft measurements are generally a couple of inches short of what the NBA lists. Michael Beasley measured out this year at 6’7” sans sneakers. So Turiaf’s an inch taller than Beasley, with bulk and a 7’2” wingspan. That’s perfectly adequate for an NBA PF.

Sign ^^^^ !!

by Sleepy Freud on Jul 9, 2008 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions

So's everybody else

I thought about preemptively addressing that issue…

It’s the NBA. I bet 10% of the players are listed at their true height/weight. I like how you linked a quote from Mullin on Beans, but mysteriously missed the link on Turiaf… regardless, his pre-draft measurements were 4 years ago. Do you really think 4 years of an NBA exercise regimen isn’t going to put on 12 lbs? My weight oscillates almost that much monthly…
And Beans was only 18 when he was drafted, his body was/is still growing up which prevents filling out.

i’d much rather took a flier on carl landry. who by pre-draft measurements is only 0.25 inches shorter and 10 lbs heavier. the rockets appear to be a borderline luxury tax team. and he at least can shoot (w/o embarassing himself) from outside of 3 ft.

by the evil monkey on Jul 9, 2008 11:27 AM PDT reply actions

Remember that not all players want to play for any team. Yeah, usually money talks louder than anything else, but we have no idea what sort of conversations really go on. That someone posts that he’d rather have Landry (and I would too, for what it’s worth—he’s a better player) doesn’t in the slightest mean that Landry had interest in coming here or we had any realistic shot.

Similar to Turiaf, Landry’s restricted. Similar to LA, Houston is near the lux tax (but not similar to LA, they’re currently under it). In fact, they’re almost I can very easily imagine this sort of conversation with Houston. “So, look, we’re thinking about taking a flier on Landry. You gonna match 4 at $17mil? Ok, fine. No need to go further and interfere with your negotiations then if you’re willing to go that high.” Or perhaps there was a call to his agent who said that Landry wasn’t interested in GS, seeing as how Nellie seems to glue big men to the bench in favor of guards. Or maybe the alleged offer from the Pacers is still being floated out there so Landry’s not going to sign an offer sheet yet when he thinks a bigger one is coming.

Bottom line: wanting and being able to get are different things.

by jae on Jul 9, 2008 11:42 AM PDT up reply actions

We should get a SG who can handle the rock and play good defense to pair with Monta

Let’s wait till Kobe’s contract is up, he’d be perfect. Plus he’s got that killer instinct.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Jul 9, 2008 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions

agreed. my point is

that by going for Turiaf, we take out this possibility altogether. as far as bench players go, Turiaf is at least my 3rd choice behind Childress and Landry.

by the evil monkey on Jul 9, 2008 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Childress doesn't play the same position

And JAE already wrote in about why we can’t get Landry. I’d like to have Kobe, LeBron, and Dwight Howard, and I’m sure Cohan would be willing to break the bank to bring those guys in because it would make good business sense, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

Landry cannot be had for what we’d be willing to pay for him. End of story.

To quote JAE
Houston is near the lux tax (but not similar to LA, they’re currently under it). In fact, they’re almost I can very easily imagine this sort of conversation with Houston. "So, look, we’re thinking about taking a flier on Landry. You gonna match 4 at $17mil? Ok, fine. No need to go further and interfere with your negotiations then if you’re willing to go that high."

We don’t have a pile of money or cap space sitting around. We have to sign Monta, Beans, and hopefully Kaz. We have a limit to what we can spend (which I bet Mullin determined to be 4M) and that’s it. If we can’t get Landry for that, we have to sacrifice Monta, Beans, or Kaz. I’m sure they looked at it. We can all agree that if Landry could be had for the same price as Turiaf that we’d take Landry. That’s not the discussion. I don’t know what your problem is with my reading comprehension. Please explain in simpler terms so a simpleminded gent like myself can understand.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Jul 9, 2008 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions

we are wasting our time.

my point was that we jumped the gun. when the difference between having and not having Turiaf and/or Magette is for all intents and purposes, the difference in having a high or low pick in the lottery.

i never said you were simpleminded. i think you’re reasoning is currently impaired b/c i proved you were wrong about Turiaf being 6’10”, 250.

by the evil monkey on Jul 9, 2008 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

And I think your reasoning is impaired

Because Houston would match any reasonable offer for Landry. Houston has much more incentive to match than LA. LA has two potential all star big men who’re getting 35 minutes a game. They don’t need much to back them up. Houston, on the other hand, has an injury prone Yao and Luis Scola. Yeah, they need to keep Landry around.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Jul 9, 2008 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions

that's not the point

i would of held out until Landry either resigned. Houston didn’t draft Joey Dorsey for nothing. I think they view him as insurance for Landry leaving b/c they don’t want to go into tax territory, which they’ll be in for what we offered Turiaf.

there is no need to get this riled up just because i would of preferred mullin waited. he’s been trying to blow his stash and ruin everything he’s done cap wise the last few years just b/c he’s upset that BD bolted.

by the evil monkey on Jul 9, 2008 1:06 PM PDT up reply actions

So what if Landry to an approach like Varejao did last year? Sat and waited, not signing offer sheets elsewhere and not getting an offer from Cleveland.

You’ve have waited, doing nothing until he signed?

Really, we have no idea what sort of inquiries were made about players. We do not know if Landry simply X’d GSW off the list of places he was willing to entertain offers. If he did, if he gave no reasonable reason for Mullin to think we had a realistic chance give the barriers (and there ARE real barriers) then waiting, just waiting isn’t smart. Yeah, it’s possible (not unlikely) that Mullin did something far less than optimal, but it sounds like so many people believe that all things are possible if only the Warriors ask. Ain’t so.

by jae on Jul 9, 2008 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah, if it were me, i would of waited.

i might have reevaluated if our young players faltered badly in summer league. if i lose turiaf so be it.

by the evil monkey on Jul 9, 2008 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Of course, if you would have waited, would you have done the same if Landry’s people already indicated that they weren’t interested in your squad? At what point of slim to no chance to you give up and move on?

by jae on Jul 9, 2008 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions

heh, now you're just using speculation

meaning we are going nowhere.

on a sidenote, if i were his or any other team’s agent, i would at least talk to the W’s as a bargaining agent to drive up my client’s price. so i find it hard to believe that Landry’s camp would outright refuse any Warrior inquiries.

provided the lakers don’t match, doesn’t signing Turiaf also likely take us out of any chance for Childress? he does have some bay roots.

losing out on turiaf isn’t the end of the world. though he helps our d, there isn’t a point to having a group of big men that aren’t adept at creating their own shot and yet have no facilitator to create said shot. his impact will be minimal.

just because we needed him the last 2 seasons doesn’t mean we should get him now that we’ve lost baron.

by the evil monkey on Jul 9, 2008 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t bet on Childress being on the radar, but I doubt that they were looking that way to begin with, and certainly it seems less likely after Maggs signed.

by jae on Jul 9, 2008 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

And

As a fan, you can say “Screw this year, let’s get a high draft pick”. But people have to pay rent and salary and run a business. Just giving up on this year would be giving up on a lot of revenue.

but usually extra salaries

mean less revenue. isn’t that why sterling used to be so cheap till public ridicule caused him to change his ways? ppl would of came out regardless to watch the kids develop.

even if it meant going over the Luxury Tax?

i have nothing against Turiaf.

the point is we bought the PS3 at the 1st store we found (say Turiaf) instead of looking for a discount (say Landry) or waiting for the price to go down (say Childress).

hopefully, you understand i am not saying Landry is a discount or that Childress’s price will go down.

by the evil monkey on Jul 9, 2008 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions

We don’t actually know this. We don’t know what sort of conversations went on. Offers aren’t the same thing as accepted offers. We don’t know how much shopping went on last week, how many offers were tabled by agents and players without teams making media gestures.

But one thing I’m quite certain of: Childress wasn’t available for what we offered Turiaf. He’s guaranteed more than that on his qualifying offer. His price will not come down below 4.6mil and likely will be much, much more.

Landry? That’s more of an unknown, but at the price we spent on Turiaf, I suspect Houston would go into the tax and pay dollar for dollar over (which would amount to having to pay about 5 mil to retain him. Landry has incentive to stay with Houston in that he’s a year closer to Bird rights if he does. Houston has incentive to match. Frankly, I’m somewhat surprised that Turiaf wasn’t scooped by someone else at the MLE. Big men get overpaid. Getting one who is close to average at that price isn’t something that happens every day.

by jae on Jul 9, 2008 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions

yes, this is basically what you said last post in a different way.

my thing is that at the risk of possibly losing the opportunity to sign Magette and offer anything to Turiaf, i’d of liked to see the Warriors wait and see what happened on the JSmoove, Childress, Landry fronts.

I still think drafting Dorsey was a hint that the Rockets may be alright w/ losing Landry and going w/ a Scola/Dorsey pairing instead.

yes it’s unknown and risky in terms of losing Magette/Turiaf, but i think you would agree that’s not a big loss. actually, their signings mean less minutes for our young players which i feel hurts the team in both developing and evaluating in the long run.

you probably have a better grasp of the business end of things more than i could ever hope to, but i would assume that losing out on magette/turiaf wouldn’t hurt cohan’s bottom line (even though the bandwagoners, aside from monta fans, would be long gone) .

by offer

i am referring to the fact that the Lakers can match.

i meant to put this at the end of my post, hence the bold, the preceded to forget about it.

by the evil monkey on Jul 9, 2008 1:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I am sitting here wondering that myself.

Why didn’t anyone else make Turiaf and offer for 4mil/4yrs. Remember I am an optimist and 2 yrs from now, this guy would be probably signing a contract for about 6 mill/yr. Total bargain here people!

by nuttinbutnet on Jul 9, 2008 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Do we know that no one else did make a similar offer?

by jae on Jul 9, 2008 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Good point….we don’t know this do we? It’s just suprising to see to how many bad contracts are out there right now, and we get a PF/C that should give us 18-20 min of pure defense per game for 4 mill/yr. i actually think he is has mid-range game also.

also suprising that we like to bitch about every contract we give. imagine this site if we had signed luke walton instead for what he is making right now. DAYAM…turiaf is a dam bargain.

comparing jon starks or jim jackson to maggette

is reeetarded.

maggette hurts. when he slashes into the lane, it’s like watching a linebacker playing basketball. he’s no softy like starks… and jim jackson, maybe he was a great player with kidd, but when your starting pg is bimbo coles wtf can you do.

danny fortson and turiaf is no comparison either. wake up yo.

by dso on Jul 9, 2008 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions

um... i was comparing them to extreme Warrior's when they sucked examples to make a point

but don’t sell jim jack short. he actually avged like 19 points, 5 assists, and 5.5 rebounds in his 31 games w/ us.

outside of ex-W’s, a Stackhouse type is probably Maggette’s best comparison though Stack was more of a 2-guard in his heyday while Magg’s is more of a 3.

and Turiaf is your typical defensive energy big man off the bench guy.

by the evil monkey on Jul 9, 2008 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions

point taken, except classifying fortson as an energy guy

is wrong.

the elf gm had this ridiculous idea that if you averaged 10 and 10 you deserved elite money, even though he soon realized that fortson just squatted in the middle, played no d and collected his own rebounds to pad his stats, intentional or not.

good signing

he’s annoying as hell to me but he’s the type of player we could use

by AJC3317 on Jul 9, 2008 12:20 PM PDT reply actions

hes definitely the most annoying player

on the lakers (besides maybe sasha and his crying) and the dude jus goes with one bad hair style after the next….Ronny, when its not working time after time, it might jus be time to cut it all off.

Turiaf

Rumor: Turiaf has been told he’ll be a backup center more than a power forward. He played that role with the Lakers last year. I think that just goes to show how important Hendrix is, but it’s a nice rotation with Biedrins, Wright, Hendrix, and Turiaf. Very young and ripe. I’d like one more vet, but it probably won’t happen since Jack plays a lot of 4.

After a great big lunch

and happy hour… I’m not as irritated by this signing as I was earlier. Now I certainly don’t think that Turiaf is worth $4 mil/yr, but he is a high energy player who can conceivably pick it up on the defensive end as well as on the boards when the game starts to grind. There are a lot worse signings (Maggs @ $10 mil/yr) but that’s a different story. I hated Turiaf as a Laker, and I really don’t see him in a Warrior jersey just yet… but things will be ok.

Ahh... I remember the D Fish signing like it was yesterday...

I was like “WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING!!! 5 yrs @ $36 mil?” Yeah… and he didn’t grow on me until the second season. Fisher did jack up a lot of shots during his first season until Baron came in. Whatta trade. Ahh… then the Dunleavy trade nearly made me… yeah you get it. I think I’ll like Turiaf’s game more than Fisher’s game.

be interesting to know if u were one of the guys last year who wanted to resign barnes for the MLE? once again how can we complain for 4 million? as pree said, he is young and fits in with this young line up. let see how they develop together.

by nuttinbutnet on Jul 9, 2008 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions

He has more assists than turnovers. That’s rare in a guy who plays in the post. His assist rate indicates that he’s adept at finding the open man. It shows he picked up the triangle offense, that he’s able to be aware of where other guys are on the court. He’s not going to set the world on fire, but he’s not going to cost you games because he’s missing thumbs. His FT% has climbed each year. It’s respectable for a big, which gives you some situational opportunities to use him late in games if Biedrins doesn’t continue to improve in that department.

Not a single player is “worth” what they’re paid in any cosmic sense, but in terms of NBA economics, Turiaf’s pretty close to ‘average NBA player’ (maybe a bit below, but likely not at his peak) and this salary is below average NBA salary. It’s too low to be an albatross, and if he improves, it’s a bargain. My guess is that we don’t think much about him or his salary once the season starts, provided he’s even here and the Lakers don’t match.

by jae on Jul 9, 2008 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Turiaf should be a great addition...

I’m just worried about the Hendrix kid. I was really high on him coming out of the draft. Him & Turiaf are very… very similar players. The only difference is Turiaf is proven and Hendrix has yet to play an NBA game yet.

by Mr. Monday Night on Jul 9, 2008 9:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Well "the only difference"

is so big I would take the “only” out of the sentence

by buky on Jul 10, 2008 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Barnes...

Hell no I didn’t want to resign him. Don’t get me wrong… I didn’t mind him being on our team. The “human turnover”’s game just didn’t appeal to me the way that Pietrus’s game did. Laugh all you want… but I would rather play Pietrus over Barnes in any game this season. I would have rather let the W’s keep Pietrus than Barnes… even though it doesn’t look like either one is returning.

Please note that I did NOT say that I would have signed Pietrus for the MLE… I’m just saying that for the price that we got him at last season… he was worth more than Barnes was.

Everybody loves Chris...

Jason (Boston): Chad… 4 years/$17 million for Turiaf? Seriously? That’s what an eighth-man who gives you 6 pts, 3 boards, and a lot of tossed towels during opposing free throws gets paid?

Chad Ford: (1:31 PM ET ) Agents everywhere have small shrines to Chris Mullin in the back of their offices.

by Spee-D on Jul 10, 2008 10:35 AM PDT reply actions

Everybody Will Love Turiaf...

I don’t get why everybody is so down on Turiaf? All last year I kept reading on this site how the Warriors lacked inside defensive presence and rebounding. Now, they go out and get a HIGH energy guy who can come off the bench and play some D and block some shots. Don’t get me wrong, Landry, Powe, Bass and company are good players, but they are all undersized. Turiaf is a legite 6’10” and can actually play center and defend against bigger opponents. Just look at his PER numbers, they are very good for a bench player who will be making only 4 mil! That is nothing in the NBA, what a bargain. They are a ton of worse contracts out there floating around.

I applaud this signing, one of Mullin’s best, i truly believe. And everyone else will believe by the 10th game of the year and see just how much he will mean to this team.

"he fills a need"

Exactly. I think that just about sums it up. Maybe this year we won’t spend so much time complaining about guys like Turiaf killing us inside.
