Let's be honest. This has been a terrible offseason. Someone give me hope

Come on everybody. I know we should be optimistic about our young guys, but this offseason has been a total dissapointment.

No matter how you slice it, Baron leaving is a big hit to this team. We lost our leader, our best player, our fire. The worst part of it is taht he wanted to stay and our managment decided that there is better things to do with our money than waste it on an injury prone 29 year old.

So, in a state of panic, we decided to offer MAX money to GIlbert Arenas who is a) injury prone (maybe even more of a concern since he is just coming back from multiple surgeries) and b) probably a less impactful player, and definitely not worth $40 mm more and c) there was no shot he'd sign with us.

Next we offer max money to an injury prone Elton Brand. If we had landed him it would've been a great move, but we knew we probably wouldn't. This move wasn't entirely bad though b/c we helped get Brand thinking and aided in shipping him to the East.

I really don't understand the next move though. Why do we sign Corey Magette to a 50 mm deal when we wouldn't give baron 65??? WE are stacked at the 2 and 3 and Corey Maggette is a downgrade at eitehr spot. Maggette is a poor defender, an average rebounder, and a mediocre shooter. If our lineup was set I think he'd be a great piece coming off the bench, but with the young guys on our roster and the money we offered him, he's going to expect to start.

Why would we lock up our money for the next 5 years to a guy who has never been a winner and plays a position that we are already set with?? The reason he scored 22/game is because he was taking all the Clippers shots.

I know we didn't want to look like we were coming out of the offseason empty handed, but I wouldve much rather thrown money at Josh Smith, Okafor, and possibly Iggy hoping to land a good young piece for multiple years. If we landed one of them it would've been great, and if not we wouldve had the cap space to add a few young guys with potential (ie. Livingston and K. Brown maybe telfair) and given our young guys the chance to play and get better. We also would have a chance to make a signing next year or in 2010 as our team is growing into its prime. Instead, we locked up a good chunk of money for 5 years in Corey Maggette, who in my opinion will not improve a team unless he's a 6th man.

Next we sign Rony Turiaf??? I hate this move too. Ronny does have heart, energy, and a big body, but he sucks!! He looked good in college, but I don't think his skill set is good enough to be a solid big in the NBA. He is clumsy and erratic. His best quality is his energy from the bench (honestly I'd rather have kept Sarunas!!)If we had filled out our lineup and had extra money leftover, I'd like him coming off the bench, but I'm frustrated that we wasted more of our cap space on an UGLY cheerleader.

Don't get me wrong, I'm optimistic about the Dubs future and think we have a good young core, but I really don't like the moves we're making. I hope both of these contracts don't go through and Baron comes back. I really think that if we signed Baron to his 5 year deal and then dealt Harrington and picks we couldve landed a big that would've put us in the thick of things.

Before Baron left we were a playoff team (assuming wright and bellinelli improved and w/o SJAX suspension). If we signed Baron for a little less, and traded Harrington, we'd be a real playoff team. Maybe we wouldn't be a legit contender, but we'd almost guarantee ourselves a chance to make a run. ANd most importantly we'd still have a young core growing behind them.

At this point, our team is worse than it was last year. I think we are a fringe playoff team at best and it is probably more likely that we wil take 9th or 10th in the West. We locked up money on average players and haven't improved our young core.

If seen us make dumber moves before  (ie. Foyle signing, dunleavy+ murphy deals, getting rid of JRich), but that doesn't excuse us from making more dumb moves.

When we lost Baron I was really dissapointed, but still had hope that we had a future. Maybe not this year, but in years to come. Our recent moves have taken some of that hope away.

Somebody tell me where we go from here...

first of all

we are not stacked at any position. Our only dominant scorer is a tweener that needs to play the point, Monta at sg long term hinders this team greatly. Second Maggette is such a physical, athletic force. He is also very talented. He does what hardly anyone on this team can do and that is create his own offense (which is primarily going to the hoop strong, which hardly anyone does on this team, and which is a much more efficient way of scoring as opposed to jacking up threes)

Baron is a huge loss, but he had to go. he just doesn’t fit in with the long term plans of this franchise. As we are such a young team right now, we are not in a position to contend, or even make the playoffs for that matter, even with Baron right now. Most of our players right now will fulfill there potential in 2-5 years. The only logical reason to keep baron and pay the money for him would be if we were going to contend or be a perrenial playoff team right now, but seeing as how our young players will be good in 2-5 years we don’t want to have an old, injured Baron making 15 million per in 3 or 4 years on the bench.

Dude, come on

We couldn’t pay that kind of $ for Baron. He would cripple us in 2 years when we no longer have Baron, we have a guy who looks like Baron and plays like Derrick Fisher without a jump shot. He wasn’t the answer long term but he wanted long term $. Mags will be a good add, going to the hoop, unlike Baron and don’t forget Baron was on a contract year too. He knew he was re-signing or opting out so he had to have a season like he did to get paid long term. Iggy is not leaving Phillie and J-smith is good, but the same player as Mags with the exception of his shot blocking. but he soen’t attck the rim like Mag’s and we will never sign a quality big as you suggest, go to my post “response to please read” and I tackle that subject and more the same stuff you were talking about.

How can you say we wouldn’t make the playoffs with Baron right now?? We would’ve been 7th in the West this year if Sjax didn’t get suspended. If we add a quality big man or even some more bench players we could maybe get a 5 or six spot in the playoffs (suns could drop off and rockets weren’t muc better than us). We also wouldn’t have to give up our young guys. Your telling me that Maggette for 5 years is better than Baron for 5 years. They are the same age and are both injury prone. Baron gets to the hole, is a winner, and is a leader. I’d rather see Buike get more tiem than pay maggs 50mm.

In my opinion Baron still has at least 4 more serviceable years in him. Maybe he trails off a bit in year 4 and 5, but at that point our youngins wouldve matured and baron could be the elder statesman.

And even if Baron didnt’ fit, I don’t think Maggette does eitehr. The reason adding Iggy or Jsmith would be a huge boost is that it would add defense. Maggette may get to the hoop, but he plays no D and isn’t a great shooter. Yea he can score, but we have no problem with that.

I guess what I’d liek to see us do now is sign Livingston instead of Dooling, let monta get time at both 1 and 2 and see what we can get for AL other than Kirk hinrich.

chill out

Maggette is a good signing. He provides stability to our offense. He rarely takes bad shots, plays within himself – doesn’t try to do too much, he drives hard to the basket and gets fouls and knocks them down, he’s got a big body that’ll help him get some rebounds. Great wing defenders are hard to find in the league, we should be fortunate to have at least one in Stephan Jackson. The Warriors aren’t stacked in any position. Maggette is a versatile 2/3/4 guy that doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, not much to complain about his game.

Did you really think Baron is planning to stay after Nellie leaves next year? He was destined to end up in LA anyways, why not start the post-baron era one year early and get a head start?

Mullin is trying make this roster as versatile as possible. Our team was too one-dimensional in the past, the pieces he is adding will make this a better team. Warriors will be able to match up well against different types of teams. Give it some time, let the team develope chemistry, this should be a fun team to watch.

baron davis

why does everyone jock this guy? Seriously he gave us 1 good season, and 90% of these boards talks about the guy like we’ve lost an all-star. Facts about Baron Davis: He’s NEVER played for a winning team thats contended for a championships. Since the 02’ season, heres his record for games played

02-03: 50 games played
03-04: 67 games played
04-05: 18 games played with NO, then 28 games with GS
05-06: 54 games played
06-07: 63 games played
07-08: 82 games played last season (which isnt surprising since it was a contract year)

He’s widely known as a coach killer, and while I thought Nellie was a tough enough coach to contain him, the end of last season proved that even Nellie was getting fed up with him. He only did so well in GS because we formed our offense around him, and Nellie gave him free reign to shoot whenever the spirit moved him. While Davis helped give us some of the best warriors memories of the last decade, he wasnt THAT good, he wasn’t worth that much money, and he was a short term solution to the long term problem of rebuilding this team into a contender.

Excellent point

I couldn’ have said it better myself! thanks for speaking truth.

by JacobMiller on Jul 9, 2008 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Another fact

Magette has only had 4 of 9 seasons where has played more than 70 games. Do not forget he is injury prone as well.

Ok first of all Baron has made the playoffs 6 times, and the second round 3 times as the leader of his team. Maggette has made the playoffs once as a role player. Baron maybe hasnt gotten close to a championship, but much closer than maggette.

Also look at how many games MAggs has played since 01 vs. Baron

Mags Baron

01-02: 63 games played 01-02: 82 games played
02-03: 64 games played 02-03: 50 games played
03-04: 73 games played 03-04: 67 games played
04-05: 66 games played 04-05: 46 games played
05-06: 32 games played 05-06: 54 games played
06-07: 75 games played 06-07: 63 games played
07-08: 70 games played 07-08: 82 games played

Cmaggs total: 443 games since 2001
BAron’s total: 444 games since 2001

So why is Cmaggs more reliable than Baron????????

by scwarrior24 on Jul 9, 2008 11:16 AM PDT up reply actions

that is hard to read but the left side is corey maggette and the right side is baron

by scwarrior24 on Jul 9, 2008 11:16 AM PDT up reply actions

NO MORE COMPLAINING!!!!

I see why every warrior fan is entitled to their opinion, but it doesn’t mean we need like 10 of these threads, where pretty much everybody is saying the same thing. Except yours was pretty long and well thought out..but still. Why is everybody being so pissy about whats going on. No games have been played, so who are we to judge? I say we should all save the negative judgment until after things have played out, give the team a chance before you doubt them.

by celicadriven27 on Jul 9, 2008 11:02 AM PDT reply actions

You guys are killing me

Get off baron davis’ jock. He played one full year for the dubs and it was a contract year. We went as far as we were gonna go with him. Talk to me in 3 years when his contract is crippling the Clippers cap and they are trying to dump his ass. I know its crazy to say it, but be patient damnit. I give Mullin the benefit of the doubt. He traded DunMurphy for Jackson and Harrington. And that is the real reason we are in the position we are and NOT baron. So please get off his nut sack.

by getoffbd'sjock on Jul 9, 2008 11:30 AM PDT reply actions

You might say I’m whining, but honestly, why would we give management the benefit of the doubt, we’ve made the playoffs once in 15 years. We have all the right in the world to complain and get pissed off about our situation. When we make consistent playoff trips, I will give Mullin the benefit of the doubt, but when our team gets worse over the offseason and claims to be building a contender withotu a superstar, I am going to be pissed.

That is the problem with a bay area sports. We give our owners the benefit of the doubt where other cities woudl have their heads. I love how we stuck with the warriors through and through and always filled the arena, but lets stop being so damn optimistic. Lets be realistic. Our team is worse than we were last year and now we have significant salary tied up with maggette for 5 years while we wait for our young players to grow into a team, which is anything but a sure thing. Even if they reach most of their potential, what says we are going to be a contender?? I am pissed and I have no shame in sayign so.

by scwarrior24 on Jul 9, 2008 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions

A couple points...

1. You cant blame “the last 15 years” on Mullin. He did not trade Webber, draft Fuller, and sign Foyle and DunMurphy. He has been the most successful general manager we’ve had since the early 90’s. Thats why he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

2. Things Mullin has done-trade Speedy Claxton for Baron, Traded DunMurphy for Jax/Al, drafted Monta and Kosta in the 2nd round, and drafted Beansy. Thus, we would not even be having these discussions about being relevant or contenders IF IT WERENT for Mullin. We would still be the laughingstock of the league.

So when Mullin makes a calculated decision to not pay a 29 year old point guard with two bad knees who played only one full season since the millenium (in a contract year no less) and has the worst shot selection of any “elite” player, 13 mil a year for 5 years, I will give him the benefit of the doubt, given the circumstances.

by getoffbd'sjock on Jul 9, 2008 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions

i never said maggette was better

my statement was merely on the value of Davis to this franchise. Maggette as a signing makes a ton of sense IF Monta is going to play the PG. Now if monta cant handle the 1 guard and we end up signing another point guard, then we just signed a 50million dollar role player. Most importantly, BARON DIDN’T WANT TO PLAY HERE. We can kid ourselves all we want about how it was because of the front office and we were “lowballing Davis”. Reality, Davis wanted to end his career in LA. He is an aspiring producer with Hollywood connections in the movie industry, and is well connected with many of So-Cal’s elite celebs. His decision to go to the Clippers was not as hard to come to as many may believe, and the Warriors would have had to GROSSLY overpay him to even have him consider staying with the Dubs. And we are talking about that much money the only question i have is, Can he win us a Championship? No…at his BEST he will get us as far as his career has ever gotten him, out of the 1st round, and humiliated in the 2nd, and you don’t build your franchise around players like that.

Here's some hope...

Parking goes up $20 dollars at the arena next season!
