Spanish Team Controversy

Here is the original post:

Here is the Spanish Team's response...

Here is a great post that I agree with totally by Wojnarowski who I normally can't stand....

I'm surprised that there has not been a post about this yet given the amount of Asian Americans in the Bay Area and on these boards so I wanted to get the feed back on the situation.

I personally detest how the situation is being handled by the Spanish Team, the NBA, and the media.  I would like to see not only penalties, but serious and formal apologies by the people involved.  This is totally unacceptable...

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I don’t understand how these Spanish players don’t see where the controversy is when it is blatantly there, How is this supposed to “inspire the Olympic spirit” as Gasol said? This is showing discrimination and the Olympics stand for acceptance. Seeing this made me lose a lot of respect towards Jose Calderon, Pau Gasol, and all the other Spanish players. Seeing things like this makes me appreciate living in San Francisco, where everyone’s so accepting of each other, no matter what our differences are. PLUR everyone, PLUR!!!

Utterly Dissapointing

Disappointed in the Spanish team for doing it and not apologizing for it –
In the end it may not have been a huge deal if the Spanish team, any member of the team, had said it was mistake and we regret it. But they don’t they just say “I don’t get what the big deal is”
Disappointed in FIBA for calling it a Non-issue
I can’t understand how an organization that calls for the international appreciation and proliferation can look at something like this and say that it isnt even an issue.
Disappointed again for the Spanish team not realizing that this is offensive
The coach compared it to dressing up taller if he played a team that was bigger than spain, which just goes to show how out of touch he is

Pretty sad...

The fact that nobody who is involved seems to understand why this might be offensive is just sad. I’m surprised that there hasn’t been some action taken by FIBA or the IOC. I don’t really know what an appropriate action would be but I’d at least like to see someone with some authority coming out to condemn the ad.

As far as the NBA and Stern goes, I could be wrong, but I don’t really see how it would be appropriate for him to do anything beyond releasing a statement condemning the ad. This was a national team not an NBA team.

BTW does anyone remember what if any action was taken when Shaq made those remarks mocking the Chinese language. I remember that there was an uproar, but I’m not sure if anything really happened. I think he apologized at least.

you can be sure that really nobody until resonance of this picture (you can find same Spain women’s team photo too) didn’t realize how ugly and dumb it is (some don’t understand even now) -things are different in USA (multicultural country with long discrimination traditions) and Spain (pretty mono national country)

i guess (just my guess) this photo should mean ‘i m a Chinese today’ -a la Kennedy’s ‘i m a Berliner today’

dumb & ugly -but IMO overreacted

Hmm...

Yeah, it’s hard for me as someone living in the Bay Area to put myself in the shoes of someone in Spain. I can understand if there was no offense intended but I think the simple fact that it did offend should warrant a sincere apology. From what I’ve read the reaction from the players/coaches has actually varied quite a bit. Gasol, while not completely understanding why it was offensive, seemed sincere in his apology, while Calderon and the Spanish coach seemed bothered by the fact that the media was even asking them about it.

I guess what I would love to see is Spain explain what exactly was intended and apologize for any offense, intended or not, instead of blaming the media.

hypocrisy...

I can understand how Chinese people may feel insulted…I probably would in their shoes… furthermore the spanish team really lacked cleverness when they made this photo shoot…. they could have handled this in better fashion…

however…. does it necessarily mean that was there intention ? no…we simply assume (once again) that our perspective is the right one… I applaud criticism but it doesn’t always have to be cynical.

And I don’t see the press making that big of an issue concerning 8 year old kids enslaved in sweatshops or China’s Imperialist policy over the peaceful nation of Tibet so it’s once again a story of hypocrisy and conflicts of interests…

agreed

While we in the Bay Area are correctly more aware of sensitivities, I think the Spanish didn’t see anything wrong. Every country and area is not as diverse. I don’t think it was an intentional mocking of Chinese people. I believe they were trying to say “We’re all Chinese” as a celebration of China hosting the Olympics and their team being part of this incredible spectacle.

There are two sides here. The Spanish team should have been more aware of their action and seen that this could possibly offend. But there also is the side that says, do we have to analyze everything to death? Do we have to be so politically correct, that nothing is acceptable anymore without looking at every possible outcome and reaction to our words and actions? Isn’t intention important here? I’m guessing the Spanish team didn’t plan to offend 1.3 billion people.

A bit off topic though it got me thinking:
The interesting thing is in America as we try for racial equality and tolerance and unity, we actually perpetuate our differences. Why African-American, or Asian-American? What’s wrong with American? If at any time that pride should come out it’s now during the Olympics.

I was in the Dominican Republic last year and met this guy who kind of looked like kobe. During our conversation I asked him what his background was (he was obviously part white, part black, and probably part native). He said he was Dominican. When’s the last time you got that out of an American that wasn’t a redneck? Usually, it’s something like “I’m Filipino-Spanish-German-Irish-Native American, and 1/32 jewish”.

I tottaly agree. Why do we always see things in offensive kind of way? My first reaction to the picture was “they are going to China so they want to show they feel part chinese”. Does anyone remembers Spanish team wearing japanese headbands after they won the world championship title in 2006? Why didn’t anyone make a big fuss out of it then? Maybe because it was a sign of appreciation for japanese culture?

That is a different story

putting on a country’s traditional garment means showing respect to that country. Have you seen kids making fun of the Japanese by running around with a Japanese headband and proclaiming that tthey are Japanese? Probably not. But you have probably seen people squinting their eyes to poke fun at Asians right? Making fun of the Asian slanted eye has been a way to degrade Asians for as long as Asians been living in the U.S. That is why people are upset. If the Spaniards were wearing traditional Chinese robes in that picture this wouldn’t even be an issue. Imagine if the Spaniards painted their faces black and painted their lips red to show respect to the USA men’s basketball team. You think the Kobe is going to be mad about that? Damn right, he is going to be furious. Why? Look up “Black Face” on Wikipedia and you will understand that meaning and history behind that word. Certain things are just inappropriate when it comes to communicating with a foreign country.

to play devils advocate....

I know that it is seen as bad taste but, the idea that the photo is offensive is based on the idea that Asians have unattractive eyes. If Sweden was hosting the Olympics and Angola took a picture of all of its players wearing blonde wigs it would be hilarious, because blonde hair is not perceived as unattractive. Personally, the way that Asians’ eyes look, to me atleast, is just different. If someone was coming to my country to play and did something to look like me, I would see it as just a harmless gag, just like with this. It’s just a harmless gag.

There has just been so much racism in our world’s history that we sometimes lack the ability to chill out and not think everything is a hate crime spurred by raging racism. In my mind the world was a much more racist place in the past, when people openly used racist jokes to degrade other races and cultures. Obviously racism still exists and it probably always will on some level, but soon or later we are all going to need to lighten up and realize that we are a much more accepting world today. This photo wasn’t done to degrade Asians, specially the Chinese. It was just a little gag showing an aesthetic different between the Spanish and Chinese teams.

Dint they say they did it to honor the chinese olympics? If so taking offense seems kinda cheap? You don’t have to like gifts but you should accept them in the spirit given? To me it’s about like someone toasting my irish heritage with a drink, yeah I’ve heard it before, so what?
I don’t expect or want players to be my role models for anything.
Lots more important things in the world to worry about. Why can’t the press jump on things that really matter? I just saw the numbers for the contracts let out to Cheney’s friends due to his iraq war, now there’s something really offensive.

A gag???

Obviously it is not a gag because the players have said that they did it to pay homage to the host country. If you are are not a minority then you do not understand how the rest of us few. I happen to be Chinese and have experienced these so called “gags” all my life. I am also a counselor for a elementary school and the some of the kids even make fun of my race, by using their fingers to slant their eyes or humming an oriental tune. I never get overly sensitive about it, but I had to tell these kids that it was inappropriate. I do agree that some Chinese do have slanted eyes, but I do not believe that I am one of them, yet these kids still made fun of me, not because of my eyes, but because of my race. Are these kids trying to show me respect by acting like me? I highly doubt it. The school that I work at is predominantly Hispanic and these same kids have talked behind my back before in Spanish. I took 3 years of Spanish in high school so I knew what they were saying. Over the summer program I was working with a fellow female Chinese counselor. One of the students asked me to take her to the restroom because she was scared after listening to a scary story told by other students. I told her to ask the female Chinese counselor and the student said to me,” Eww I don’t like her because he has does eyes.” Again I had to lecture her about this issue. Now I know these are kids and they don’t know any better, but shouldn’t the Spanish team have more common sense than the kids that I work with?

It is also true that some Chinese eat dogs and I am not going to deny it. Well the Chinese eat almost anything, but don’t people from certain parts of the U.S. eat road kill such as opossums and raccoons? You can argue that a dog is used as a pet, but so is a guinea pig and people from South America love eating deep fried guinea pig. Just put it this way, if you are poor and hungry you will eat just about anything. Now Im just trying to counter any dog eating comments before it happens, but the question to you is will it be okay for the Spaniards to take of photo of the team attempting to eat a dog because it is a fact that some Chinese do eat dogs? Do you think that is a gag? Do you think that is offensive? When will you draw the line?

I believe that I am a pretty chill guy because you can joke with me about anything. I have watched comedies that poked fun of Asians before and laughed about it. Remember that movie “How High” starring Method Man and Red Man. Remember “three inches of hard dick.” I thought that was hilarious. I didn’t get offended by any of that because it was a comedy. When it comes to the Olympics, the way you present yourself to another country is very crucial because it can make or break your relations with that same country. There is a time to be humorous and there is time to show professionalism.

Your comment about the idea of Asians having unattractive eyes is just ignorant. It just shows that only you believe that Asians have unattractive eyes. If Asian eyes are perceived as being so unattractive why are so many white men dating Asian women? Maybe there is nothing unattractive about it? In the case of the people Angola putting on blond wigs to pay homage to the Swede’s, it wouldn’t be funny if the people of Angola painted their faces white and then put on a blond wig. Your reaction would probably be like “what the F were they thinking.” Isn’t there also any idea that pale white skin is unattractive? gag or not people have to be aware if their actions will offend the next person especially when dealing with foreign affairs. You wouldn’t dress up as a fat kid to your obese cousin’s birthday party and expect him to welcome you with open arms would you? Of course not. I am not trying to pick a fight with you. What I am merely doing is to help you understand that there is a time for gags and there is a time to just keep your mouth shut.

Your comment about the idea of Asians having unattractive eyes is just ignorant.

i did not say that Asians have unattractive eyes. I said that is the idea that would make the act insulting.

I said,”Personally, the way that Asians’ eyes look, to me atleast, is just different.” Because they are different! Every race is different! I’m not implying any difference in equality and yeah I am attracted to Asian girls just like every other race.

Also, this isn’t just a “minority” thing. Everyone, even white people, have to deal with social prejudices.

by dancingchiapet on Aug 14, 2008 12:01 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okay

I want you to understand that the social prejudices that white people go through fails to compare to the prejudices that minorities go through. I know we all go through prejudices. If you ever decide to live in China you will probably face some type of racism yourself by hands of the Chinese, but then again, some Chinese will probably show you more respect than some Americans, simply because you are a white foreigner. Nevertheless we all face racism, but it is not all the same. Gasol may not be racist and you may not be racist, but certain gestures are just inappropriate because of the connotations and history behind it. If Gasol and the Spaniards truly believe it was harmless then they should just apologize. Simple as that. It is the fact that they just kept on defending themselves that pisses me off. If the gag isn’t funny no matter how harmless you think it is, just apologize to the people you have offended.

I am not upset with Gasol or the Spanish team. In fact hours after reading about the controversy I watched the Spain vs. Germany game on NBColympic.com just to get a glimpse of Ricky Rubio. Their reason behind the gesture just doesn’t make much sense to me. How can they not think it is offensive? I guess now they know.

by Snake Eyez on Aug 14, 2008 12:45 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I want you to understand that the social prejudices that white people go through fails to compare to the prejudices that minorities go through.

That’s all relative. I use to work in Oakland with 95% Black people and I use to go to school with 70% Asains. I’ve been the minority serveral times in my life.

I don't mean to start a flame war, but...
In the case of the people Angola putting on blond wigs to pay homage to the Swede’s, it wouldn’t be funny if the people of Angola painted their faces white and then put on a blond wig. Your reaction would probably be like "what the F were they thinking." Isn’t there also any idea that pale white skin is unattractive?

Just because it would likely be executed poorly and they’d end up looking like idiots doesn’t make it offensive. Laughable, yes. Offensive, no.

You wouldn’t dress up as a fat kid to your obese cousin’s birthday party and expect him to welcome you with open arms would you?

A nice carefully picked example, but I’ll disect if I may…

If your cousin was a 49ers fan, and you showed up to his house in 49ers gear even though he knows you don’t care about football, would he open his arms to you? Heck yeah! He’s PROUD of his 49ers fanhood and would enjoy seeing you embrace that.

To quote a little known man named Ghandi:

“Imitation is the sincerest flattery.”

Freaking Ghandi, man. I guess he didn’t know.

In your hypothetical situation, the only reason the fat kid would not like imitation is because he sees his fatness as “unattractive” and doesn’t like to have attention drawn to it. If the fat kid didn’t see his fatness as unattractive, he’d enjoy seeing people trying to be like him (and probably get a good laugh at their poorly executed imitations). Heck, back in the middle ages, being fat was a sign of wealth and was considered rather attractive.

Your comment about the idea of Asians having unattractive eyes is just ignorant. It just shows that only you believe that Asians have unattractive eyes.

Actually, that’s a reading of the response to the picture. Whatever the reason, Asians didn’t like having attention drawn to the way their eyes are shaped in this picture. Maybe its because idiots keep coming up to them and saying “ching chang chong chong” with an oriental melody while making peace signs (because they don’t know it’s really “V for victory”) and sqinting their eyes and that gets annoying and patronizing after a while. Maybe it’s because Asians themselves think the shape of their eyes is less attractive. Who knows, but it’s clearly something that the Asian community doesn’t like other people imitating.
If people like the way something is about them, they usually like to show it off and see other people noticing and imitating it. If they don’t, they like to hide or ignore it and don’t like to see other people noticing or imitating it.
The Spanish basketball team clearly was ignorant of these things. However, I have numerous Asian friends who like making fun of themselves/other Asian people by going around squinting their eyes and making “V for victory” signs and posing for pictures. Anything that’s OK for some people to do, but not others is just confusing… I don’t know what I’m saying anymore, but basically people need to just chill out, not react negatively to things and educate the ignorant.

Predictable outcome
I’m surprised that there has not been a post about this yet given the amount of Asian Americans in the Bay Area and on these boards so I wanted to get the feed back on the situation.

I actually looked up GSoM for that reason. As far as my actual feelings about it, they fall in line with most of what dancing chiapet said. And I know its not common practice but I’ll also reference a Truehoop comment made by jbock37

I don’t see the problem with this, it’s hilarious that Spain posed for this picture. They were not insulting the way Chinese people look, they were just playfully acknowledging a common Chinese facial feature. If it was really meant as racist, Spain wouldn’t be playing in Beijing. I really think it’s a shame that people have fallen so deep into the politically correct memory hole that they cannot see the difference between racism and a joke. Yes I do believe racist jokes exist. But this is not racist, it’s a simple joke. Nobody is really offended by this; perhaps “theoretically” offended, which basically means “because people have told me such humor is politically incorrect, by the theory of political correctness I am offended even though in reality I am not.” A racist joke involves a reference to past harm, such as a joke about blacks and slaves or a sexist joke about women. But simply acknowledging a difference, that is neither bad nor good nor harmful, is not racist. It’s FUNNY.

And what’s this “Now they know they were wrong.” Don’t put thoughts in other people’s minds. Try to persuade, agree to disagree, I’m all for that. If people are not convinced by what I’ve written and still think the picture is racist in nature, then fine, but I disagree. All of this just shows the pressure of an international culture that has no respect for freedom of expression, speech, and humor. If everything that MIGHT offend someone is WRONG, then I guess we’re all wrong every time we speak.

I also think it be ridiculous for the NBA to do anything, because
1. Its not directly related to the NBA
2. Fining people for things that ‘might be’ offensive is hard if not impossible. Even, if all parties agreed the incident was offensive, how would you determine the severity of the fine. To my knowledge there is no such measuring stick. Futhermore, is emotional damage even punishable, under civil law? (not a lawyer)
3. I think it would be a violation of the 1st amendment, since no libel was incurred or contract violated. As I believe those would be the only grounds for punitive damage. (once again not a lawyer)

Would it still be the same if the Spanish team took a picture with their lips folded to make it look like they have big lips?

What if LeBron James stretched out his eyes during an interview to make his eyes look chinky, would that be okay?

Ignorance won't buy much sympathy from me...

I wonder, how many of you guys who have posted in this diary, who believe that the media is overreacting, are ACTUALLY chinese. It’s their opinion, IMO, that means more than anything w/ re: to the subject.

I ask this to you, have you EVER felt the sting of racism. I’m Black & Asian and I’ve spent quite a lot of time outside of the bay area, so you know I HAVE. I have an islander look so a lot of white people that I’ve hanged out with won’t think twice about dropping the n-bomb, or making some blatantly racist comments around me. DO you have any IDEA how irritating that is? Its gotten to the point where I just stopped trying. Most of it is downwright IGNORANCE, as most of these cats have’nt spent much real life time w/ people of color. I’m pretty sure they didn’t mean any malice by it… but does that make it feel any better? HELL THE “F” NO!

why is that offensive?

I probably can’t tell the difference between a handful of races but that’s not a matter of disrespect, its just that there are so many combinations of races in our country that its almost impossible to be able to accurately identify what everyone’s ancestry is. I’m part norwegian and people will ask me if I’m german. Keep in mind Nazi’s went through some of my past relatives neighborhoods. Why should I be offended by that? It says nothing about me as a person, no negative judgement on me.

I think a misidentification of ethnicity is a silly thing to be offended by.

I am amazed about how many of you are missing the point...
1) It is not up to the offenders to decide whether it was offensive or not, whether it is logical or makes sense. Take it at face value, if a whole group of people (mainly Asian Americans) are extremely offended by the gesture, just apologize and move on. Do not defend or try to justify your actions which are intolerably racist and offensive. The, “well I have black friends” argument makes me cringe every time I hear it. 2) This is not a derogatory gesture because Asian people are embarrassed about their eye shape (well some are, but that is more a pressure of European imperialism). It is derogatory because that gesture has been a used in a mocking, patronizing way to make fun of, not only just Chinese people, but also of all people of Asian descent, as if all Asian people look the same and have the same culture. Let me put it another way… if the Spanish team painted their faces black and started tap dancing, and black people would obviously be offended, is it because black people are ashamed of their skin color? No, people are offended because of the systemic racism and mocking of black people and culture that came from the minstrel shows 2) It is a complete double standard as Adrian W. pointed out. When it comes to making black people wearing suits and not being “thugs,” the NBA is all about handing out fines. Suddenly when the white Europeans do a racist gesture the NBA does nothing and try to put it on the hush hush. Come on…

Speaking of amazement.

A lot of you need to calm down and realize the world doesn’t exist through american eyes. And I say calm down in that you need to think!

When I was in Japan you would see actors in commercials and otherwise put on the blackface and play a sort very weird routine obviously indebted to that wretched step’n fetch it shit. If I saw that in America, I’d be mad as hell, because I would know exactly what the cultural connotations are. Yet in Japan, the bile that accompanies the american situation isn’t present, largely because there just isn’t the cultural baggage with it that there is in the U.S. No doubt it was culturally ignorant, but that is precisely the point—it is a different culture, and thus falls more or less into a lot the ethnocentrism that pervades all cultures. Most Japanese would find it funny because of the silliness on display, not necessarily even associating it with black people. This isn’t to defend the practice of this in Japan, only to make the point that systems of cultural signification do not always carry over to others!

Take the case at hand. Sure, asians in america recognize this to be a derogatory physical sign via mocking, because that is what it generally signifies here. But is this so in Spain? I don’t know, but given that there aren’t many asians in Europe, let alone Spain, there is good reason to think (so much so that ‘likely’ is a fair term) that there is not a more or less parallel system of signification here, given the very different ethno-cultural histories.. I do no know that many asians I know from Japan, Korea and China did not automatically even register the thing the Spanish team did as mockery, and found myself having to explain how it was used in america usually.

Just because something is offensive in one culture in no way means it carries over to be offensive in another. Some things do carry over—but a lot doesn’t.

I'm Chinese

and personally I’m not at all offended.

It seems that the best argument that can be made against the gesture is that “Chinese people have been made fun of for this in the past.”

In 100 years, I hope, nobody will find this kind of thing offensive. Because by then, racism will no longer exist. It is a testament to the prevailing atmosphere of racism, perpetrated by “political correctness”, that there is such a strong reaction to this. To be politically correct you basically can’t acknowledge racial differences. Well, like it or not, all races are fundamentally different, whether it be hair color, eye size, or vertical leaping ability- and it is a key part of our respective cultural identities.

Racism only hurts because we allow it to hurt, because we buy into the idea that it is bad to be different. By condemning the team, by saying “don’t do that, it offends Asians” we are adding the message that “Asians, having squinty eyes is embarrassing.”

Affirmative action also sucks because it keeps me from getting into colleges.

your reasoning is wrong

racism is racism, is not correct

to put focus on someone’s racial difference is not inherently racist

i.e. mexicans often have darker/tan skin
they’re ancestors lived in a sunny area closer to the equator; compared to someone from cloudy/rainny england where the english ancestors had less sun on their skin
there is nothing negative about that

it is only racist when the purpose is to be insulting/imply a unequallity

Their cultural unawareness shouldn’t even be an issue. Its not like Spain’s a 3rd world country. They have the internet there. The AD firm responsible for those pix is sponsoring the National Team that’s defending its Olympic title, for Christ’s sakes. I doubt they are unable to do their do-diligence on the subject of what’s culturally appropriate. They’re spending the whole summer in China. Wouldn’t it make sense for them to learn what they can about the country and its populace before arriving there? There should be no reason for their blatant ignorance.

but every nation and every culture is pretty self limited -as Spanish as American -it’s understandable that Spain can’t impose their opinion that “here is no any problem” but also is not understandable why Americans are trying to force their standards of co-existing as most important

even if you feel offended -swallow it and look forward -i’ve got to do like that not just once or twice in my life -if i m white it doesn’t mean that i m not familiar with discrimination (all my nations history in about last 800 years is about discrimination) -sometimes people seems to be ignorant just because of different cultures -if reasoning of some insulting action was not evil intention and you know that then why to keep to be mad?

The intent or whatever wasn’t suppose to be offensive, but left some people feeling offended. So making the gesture may not have been intended to offend anyone, but it did, so the Spaniards should realize that and stop defending themselves w/ the “it wasn’t intended to be offensive” card! It definitely was more out of ignorance or stupidity than just blatant racism which people seem to be confusing here.

but at least I’ve thought about it, instead of accepting what society tell us.

Seeing a photo that emphasizes cultural facial features and automatically taking offense, for no reason….. I’d say that’s social conditioning. “THAT’S RACIST!” is not a reason. When the word “racist” no longer exists, that’s the day we stop being offended at every silly little gesture.

Whatever, you watch a movie like Scary Movie and you see an entire scene about “hey, you’re on the wrong set, I’m the token black guy in this movie” “oh, my bad, here’s your beer”. Is this racist then too? Why didn’t anybody put up a fight about it? Oh, yeah, the Wayans’ brothers directed it, and they’re black so it’s ok to make black jokes. Anybody seen “Avenue Q”?

So, if that's true

— and I suspect it may be — what are you whining about?

Seriously, I don’t begrudge anyone their passion on this (non?) story, but I think you may have touched on one of the reasons I personally don’t find it particularly upsetting. Racism is rarely commutative: in these situations, power dynamics are everything. The reason it’s OK to drop the word “honky” in mixed company, while the N-bomb is so poisonous, is the power imbalance: honkies haven’t been enslaved, oppressed and discriminated against in this country for the past 300 years.

In this case, there is no power imbalance: China is a more powerful country than Spain, both economically and militarily. To an Asian-American who has lived their life amid a white majority, the gesture surely stings a little. To a nation of over a billion that’s poised to become the #2 player on the World Stage, it just isn’t the same. Indeed, from everything I’ve read, the Chinese hosts didn’t take it badly at all. I suspect this response, from a Chinese fan at the game, is pretty typical:

Huang Shiren, a fan at the Spain-Germany game, said at halftime he hadn’t heard about the picture. When shown the photo he didn’t recognize the gesture.

“Are they looking at something?” Huang asked.

Chinese, more than 90 percent of whom are members of the majority Han ethnic group, tend to be highly sensitive to political slights against their nation, but less attuned to racial and ethnic slurs seen in the west. Huang, a Han who works for the city government, said all seemed well in relations between the two countries.

“Spain and China don’t have any problems between them,” Huang said. “This should just be about sports without any of that other noise.”

Further, as Lat and others have said, it’s pretty clear no malice or insult was intended. I dunno, that’s a pretty big deal to me.

Obviously it was a stupid and ignorant thing to do. But I agree with Skeptic and others who have said (in so many words) that there are way better things in this world to get your undies in a bunch over. In the end, what you choose to get upset about is kind of a zero-sum game. While people worry about stuff like Britney Spears’ kids and the Spanish team photo, millions of people in Africa starve, our criminal war of aggression on Iraq lingers on, and we continue to pump greenhouses gases into our fragile environment at obscene rates.

Again: perspective.

Don't mess with ^^^^ !!

by Sleepy Freud on Aug 14, 2008 10:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's what you think

It is understandable on why the people of China do not take the connotations of making a slanted eye gesture as being degrading. After all why would a fellow Chinese act out that gesture to another Chinese when both of them have similar features? Many people of the main land have never even seen a foreigner in person before or interacted with them. Some white foreigners might even be treated like a celebrity. I was at the Forbidden city last year and a group of 20 Chinese students were crowding around taking pictures with a 6 foot white male. I doubt that guy was a celebrity and the look on his face suggested that he was flattered and overwhelmed by the celebrity like attention.

You can’t say that there is no power imbalance when comparing China and Spain. Yes China is a rising power and yes China has a stronger military, but that does not erase the suffering and oppression the Chinese have faced over the last century by foreigners. The past lingers on in the minds of most Chinese especially the older ones. The Chinese were also known as “the weak of the east” back in the days. Things have obviously gotten better since then, but China as a whole is still trying to show the world that they are no longer the “weak of the east.” That is the reason why China spent billions of dollars to build the stadiums and to create that amazing opening ceremony. China wanted to impress the rest of the world. China wanted other countries especially the west to know that they are not just a country filled with peasants and sweat shop workers. In reality China’s current population is still made up of peasants. What you see in the Beijing Olympics is just a small fraction of China. Remember China is a huge country. Poverty is a huge issue in China, which the government should address soon, so therefore Spain, a high income country does have a higher status than a developing country like China.

I am glad that everyone agrees that it was an ignorant thing to do. I am not here to pick a fight and unlike Ballin, as a Chinese American born in China, I don’t want China to take over the world and I don’t hate the Spaniards. I just want them to stop defending themselves, understand the history of China and just apologize for that seemingly harmless, but somewhat idiotic gesture. I mean the American athletes who wore a face mask after arriving in Beijing apologized immediately because they didn’t want Chinese officials to think that they were protesting. I believe the Spaniards can do the same.

If they're all so hurt by the past oppression

Why don’t they hurl insults (or rocks) at foreigners instead of crowding around and taking pictures of them? I really, really, really think this is a case of the media stirring up the PC police more than anything else.
I just want people to chill out and stop taking themselves so seriously. So, you think the Spaniards made fun of you, great. Go walk around talking with a lithp all day and see how fun it is. Or, next time you go out to a club, walk in naked, or whatever.

Besides, your use of the term “white man” offends me. It confers a relation to the oppressive slave owners of the past 300 years. We’re beyond that, or at least I am. I’m Caucasian. Yup, that's what I think

Which is, you know, why I wrote it.

And I can say there isn’t a power imbalance when comparing China and Spain. I just said it. I’ve been to both places: obviously Spain is a “richer” and more developed country, on a per capita basis. But I think that advantage is dwarfed by China’s huge population, crazy economic growth, and strong military. We might want to ask someone in the US State Department to be sure, but I think it’s fair to say Spain doesn’t have a power advantage over China, in the same way that White Americans have a power advantage over Asian Americans. The fact that most of the offense taken to the photo seems to be by ethnic Asians living in predominantly white countries, rather than the Chinese themselves, seems to be evidence of this.

I would also add that the Chinese, like the Japanese, Europeans, Africans, or anyone else who has seen real suffering in last 100 years (war, starvation, fascism, etc.) have a perspective about this kind of stuff that we fat, spoiled, whiny Americans tend to lack.

Otherwise, I mostly agree with your points. I just think the passion of the negative reaction in this thread is disproportionate to the gravity of the offense. The team apologized, right? It was a dumb, insensitive thing to do. Now let’s move on.

"We are special"

Maybe, but then, as Americans, we’re not particularly objective are we?

And even if we are special, it does nobody any good for us to act like it. When Bush criticizes Russia or China for their wars of aggression and disrespect for human rights, I wonder if he even has the slightest clue how unbelievably hypocritical he looks to everyone else in the world.

I think what you call “American ideals” are better termed “basic humanist ideals”: basically, peace, love, compassion, justice, equality, etc. For a country that —

• Built itself on the genocide of an existing population
• Got rich by ripping people from their homeland and forcing them into slavery
• Made itself the dominant force in the world by nuking and firebombing millions of innocent civilians
• To this day, tortures and kills innocent civilians to suit its needs

– to act like it has some special claim to these humanist values, is pretty rich, dontcha think? Not saying we’re any worse than any other country in the world — we’ve mixed in a whole lot of good with our evil, and in the final tally, every country’s committed their share of horrors. But if there is a God, and She believes in peace, love, and equality, She sure as hell don’t think we’re special.

What makes this a special place is that we’ve been able to keep ourselves relatively free for 200 years and that folks can come here from all over the world with a dream to make their life better and have a pretty good chance of succeeding. I’m not saying we’re better than everyone else, just that there’s a special attitude and vibe here that works for those who want to work hard. Trouble is it works too well for those that want to exploit >)
But I guess you cant have one without the other? Where else can you have the opportunity along with nice california weather? Everywhere has it’s own problems.

Don’t be so paranoid. Who would want to record everyone 24 hours a day? what would be the point? Who would they get to monitor the tapes? If everyone is being recorded imagine the logistical mess it would be, the govt. can’t even account for all it’s computers. Get out and enjoy life, time is wasting.

Perspective?

A considerable portion of Spain’s residents are racist.

If the photo was an isolated event from a society who really does see the difference between “harmless gag” and “racist taunt,” I’d be right there w/you guys that this is no big deal. Unfortunately, the reality here is that Spain is indeed a backwards country when it comes to race relations, and what is acceptable in the public eye. This is part of a pattern of open, culturally accepted racism in the country. Ask Theirry Henry. Ask Lewis Hamilton.

Again: I agree that this photo, by itself, is a seemingly innocent and “oops” moment. But put it all together. This isn’t a matter of PC, stepping on our toes, etc. It is a flat out epidimic in Spain. As much as the world likes to snub their noses at the US, we’re all in the same boat when it comes to cultural insensitivity. See FIFA’s ads against racism to get an idea of what I’m talking about. Thank goodness we are past that stage in our cultural development, where we don’t have to see Stephen Jackon PSA’s pleading that you don’t throw bananas at him or yell monkey noises at him during games.

Unfortunately- we don’t get a lot of world news in our america-centric media. Lots of stuff going on so there isn’t always time to highlight world issues in a mainstream fashion. In this case- many folks here are missing the point that this is not an isolated incident.

1. A considerable portion of Latvia’s residents are racist.
2. A considerable portion of UK residents are racist.
3. A considerable portion of Australia’s residents are racist.
4. A considerable portion of USA residents are racist.

etc.

-every nation and every culture has got “A considerable portion of residents who are racist.” -and it not depends of nation religion or race -reasons for racism are the same all around the world -ignorance stupidity and isolation

dunno why but USA mass media are trying to stick this photo with monkey chants in soccer games etc. -like they want to claim Spain as totally racist country where racial offence is commonplace
-inner mechanism of pride for your identity can work in ugly way if you’re uneducated ignorant and isolated and soccer hooligans are different story

racism is common in every country and every culture because initiator of it in latent way lives inside of every person -no matter what color of skin or eyes he or she’s got

Yes, Yes China is filthy because it is still a third world country. Majority of the people are still uneducated and poor but that does not give anyone the right, especially the Spaniards to poke fun at them. Shit…an Asian country like Singapore with 3/4 Chinese population is one of the cleanest places in the world and much cleaner than the United States, so would that justify the Singaporeans for degrading the US.?

well,

Considering it’s not unusual for entire soccer stadiums in Spain to mimic monkey sounds and chant racist slurs against opposing football (soccer) players who happen to be black, it doesn’t surprise me that may Spaniards are struggling to understand why the ad is offensive. There justification usually boils down to something like, “but, that’s how they look.” I’m sure Europe (in general) really is more progressive than the United States, but things like this incident (even though Spain doesn’t represent all of Europe) shatters the myth that European’s are more cosmopolitan. They just dress better.

Like it or not, minorities are held to a higher standard, because that is the only way to beat the powers that be at their own game.

If you are a minority, which I assume you are, I know you’ve probably had to deal with some ignorance, but that doesn’t give you an excuse to throw that ignorance right back. And by ignorance I am referring to you referring to the collective whole of white people as a single entity, and assuming that there is not a single white person who understands racial bullying or insults. I’m a white Jewish male, and I’ve had the word “kike” used in my face, so I think that gives me a little perspective. But the funny thing is, all that usually does is cloud people’s judgment and cause them to not think objectively. Those that can brush off the petty comments and actions and rise above it with an open mind are those who’s “perspective has any merit.” You do not seem like you’ve been able to do that, so maybe you should look in the mirror.

You should read what people in Europe say during their soccer tournaments

After Turkey beat Croatia to advance 2 months ago, here’s an article I found regarding their next opponent, the Germans:

"We have redefined what football is all about. The diehard spirit of falling behind and owning the opponent regardless of circumstance of difficulty. The English look at us and they weep with joy for avenging their defeat at the hands of Croatians. The Germans look at us and quake with fear not seen since the trenches. The Spanish look at us and envy our inhuman determination.

Go ahead Kraut.

Score a goal. Score 2 goals. No no…. Score 5. Doesn’t matter anymore. We are above and beyond your petty numbers and statistical morale mongering.

We are Legend.

And we will defeat the Germans this Wednesday as well. It’s time they tasted some crushing defeat like their favored kin before them, the remnants of old fart Europe being trampled and outclassed by the new, the insane, the indomitable: the Turkish."

Imagine Americans spouting this. National pride or racism?

this is a stupid conversation

If China was that offended they would not only suspend the Spanish team from Olympic competition, they would suspend the other teams too and tell Spain to take a hike.
Dont forget that while there is an Olympic governing body that oversees the Olympics, all the athletes and fans are under Chinese law while in China. China can do whatever the fuck they want and you cant say shit about it. You know their stance on human rights.

I dont mind a good conversation on racial issues, but I dont like people trying to tell someone of another race that they should or shouldnt be offended, and to what degree. That is just as ignorant as what the Spaniards did. That whack attitudes we throw at each other on basketball topics should not extend towards a serious conversation like this. He also made a few hilarious comments about the “un-cute Chinese kid / cute Chinese kid” scandal, which in my view is marginally more disturbing than Spanish-Team-Photo-gate…

You think you had a difficult childhood … imagine your government got together and decided you weren’t cute…

(Then when they showed the photo of the so-called un-cute kid, who’s clearly just as adorable as the other one, he hid behind his desk and said “oh my God … she’s HIDEOUS!!!!”)

Blame game...

When did this post become an anti PC diary? If I’m not mistaken, the main topic was team spain’s not-so-cute pix & their cavalier attitude about it.

Sure, some people can be a little racially sensitive; but that isn’t the point. The point IS, that their gesture offended someone – regardless of how indifferent you feel about the subject. Its an emotional thing & people’s personal experiences shape their own feelings – another thing that makes everyone so unique from each other. Different things sets different people off, so don’t belittle other people’s sensitivity towards racial slights; I’m sure there’s something someone could say to you that could set you off [just imagine someone talking ishh about your mother]. EVERYONE has fighting words. Just because these words aren’t yours doesn’t give you the right to criticize others about theres.

The whole point is that the did something that can be deemed offensive. Regardless of whether or not they meant harm by it, they should just man up and apologize for it. Not blame the media for blowing it up.

The real question is...

Where do we draw the line? Just because some people have been run over by buses does that mean we’re not allowed to use the phrase “they just threw him under the bus” anymore? Or what about “If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you do it too?” If we tiptoe around every single f-ing thing we say, what’s left. Oops… I can’t say left anymore, because 2,000 lefties die every day while using products made for right-handed people.

People need to have tougher skin. Somebody once said “sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me”. This should be extended to pictures, etc. It’s one thing when somebody doesn’t give you a job because of the color of your skin, or your weight, etc. It’s another thing when somebody takes a stupid picture of themselves. Be the bigger person, please.

To say I’m pissed off is an understatement. I used to have respect for everything Spanish, but I’ve slowly lost it over the years, starting with Luis Aragones, telling his players to chase the ‘monkey’ Thierry Henry around. What did he get? A little POS fine, and a slap on the wrist. Can’t teach an old racist new tricks anyways. Then of course, Spanish football is marred with some of the most racist fans in the World (notwithstanding those in Eastern Europe). These fans are absolutely horrible, enough for Samuel Eto’o once to pick up the ball, and stop the game because they kept chanting monkey noises at him and throwing bananas on the pitch. Then, this happens.

I’m Asian, and my eyes are my most identifiable feature. What’s done is done, and they should’ve apologized. The fact their apologies have been half-assed shows lack of intent, and shows the messed up nature in their head. Pau Gasol and Jose Calderon, especially, I’ve lost complete respect for. Playing in Asian communities like LA and Toronto, you’re gonna jepordize that by attempting to justify your actions? Are you serious? Garbajosa’s statement was the worst of all – he flat out refused to apologize and he thought it was funny. Serves him right – now that he’s out of Toronoto his true colors really show.

There will never be an apology out of the Spanish. In due time I’ll let it go, but right now, I’m steaming so much, my head isn’t on straight. I’m just glad I don’t live in that crappy second world developing POS craphole called Spain.

Someone said retaliation – why should the Chinese team stoop to their level? Yao Ming is a leader, not a clueless tall inbred punk, like Gasol.

it's just a picture

it didn’t cost anyone a dime. it didn’t break any bones and won’t leave any scars. it’s just a picture. there’s a lot worse things out there in this world than a silly picture of a bunch of fools – things like Russian killing people in Georgia for example. Everyone needs to keep things in perspective. Seriously, toughen up.

Left hand, right hand, it doesn't matter. I'm amphibious.

Look it does not have anything about being tough

I seriously doubt that anyone on this forum or the world is crying about some idiots doing some racist expression. What people are pissed about, myself included, is the complicity and tolerance of this kind of behavior. As the poster 4 topics above pointed out there have been almost no repercussions from to any of the players above. We want the stupid behavior to end, then stand up and say something about it.

Nice.

So it’s not the vulgar gesture people are upset about.

What people are upset about is anyone who would rather try put the gesture in perspective than flip out about it.

Personally, I choose to “stand up” when I detect real malice on the part of the offender (or “abuse” as Henry and Ronaldinho put it). In the absence of malice, I choose to take a more nuanced view.

Everyone’s entitled to their own personal emotional reaction on this. People, on either side, who think everyone else has to share their reaction: chill out.

and...

Yes no one is getting lynched, hell no one is even getting fired from their job, but again you let this behavior go unchecked it propagate and multiplies. These athletes are not only role models for children in their own country (and their own country seems to have a large problem with both overt and covert racism), but people all over their world. Even if they truly did not know what they were doing, which I highly doubt, they are spreading this negative stereotype and malicious gesture. This is again not an emotional reaction. I know in all reality racism and prejudice will never be eliminated, but at the least we can we try to dissuade people from that kind of stupid behavior and thought.

by outqast on Aug 17, 2008 8:21 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Hm.

Your central argument

you let this behavior go unchecked it propagate and multiplies

Sounds suspiciously close to the “slippery slope” argument people use to work themselves into a frenzy over communism, terrorism, gay marriage, etc.

Part of being a responsible citizen of the world is being able to distinguish between real problems/threats facing the world (war, hunger, violence, environmental degradation, etc.) and the latest fake problem / non-story drummed up by the media to fill dull news cycles and work people into needless tizzies. In some ways, prioritizing among these problems is more important than choosing the “right” side of a trivial issue.

I agree that the gesture sucked. Out of curiosity, what kind of punishment do you have in mind for the offenders?

Do you logically think the Spanish team would want to piss off the Chinese by insulting them before visiting them and playing games with them? That sounds pretty emotional to me? The rational explanation is that Spain is clueless and got some bad advertising agency advice. There’s lots of real problems with racism in the world but I don’t think basketball players are a big part of it? My guess is the Spanish team has gotten enough bad press to think a bit more before taking a photo of their next overseas trip?

Another take...
bad advertising agency advice.

I’d say the advertising agency knew exactly what they were doing. Vanna White famously said “Any press is good press”. Now, I don’t know who the ad was for, but I’m damn sure that every Spaniard knows now…

Do you logically think the Spanish team would want to piss off the Chinese by insulting them before visiting them and playing games with them?

Why do u always ask questions that are soo stupid where the answer is ridiculously obvious? Who in their right mind would want to piss of the host country when about to go to the olympics?

the point is they took a pic like that and people were offended. now they need to be educated and i think they were. even tho it sounds like most of them could give a shiet. quit defending them.

and all these remarks bout this slant eye gesture being only offensive in the US……..that’s CRAP. if any race in this world besides asians, wanted to make fun of an asian, that’s the first gesture that would be done and u know it.

I suppose u know of all the accounts? correct me if i am wrong but didn’t spain get booed when playing the Chinses basketball team. the sportsmanship thruout these olympics has been so great where no one team was booed. yet they booed spain. Go figure.

and regarding the cinese not taking offense, read these posts dawg. some of them are obviously chinese and are taking offense. last i heard chinese americans r still chinese.

by nuttinbutnet on Aug 18, 2008 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, at least by every account I've read

Including this one (posted above, but in case you missed it):

The controversy hasn’t been reported in China’s entirely state-owned media and Chinese fans at the 18,000-seat Beijing Olympic Basketball Gymnasium cheered for both teams during the game with no sign of anti-Spanish sentiment.

If you have some other sources that indicate any kind of public outcry in China, I’d love to hear them.

Otherwise, I’m left to imagine that the majority of people making a huge deal out of this are spoiled, hypersensitive Americans with a bit too much time on their hands.

And last I heard Chinese Americans were still Americans. ;-)

Well...read this one..
Our own Pete Thamel, who covered Spain’s victory over China earlier today for The Times, writes in from Beijing to point out that
The typically sedate Chinese crowds vigorously booed the Spanish basketball team at times in Spain’s overtime victory here on Tuesday night. It’s unknown whether it has anything to do with the publication of insensitive pictures in which the Spanish men’s and women’s team appear to be mocking people of Asian descent by pulling back their skin behind their eyes.

as mentioned, i don’t think they booed any other teams…even those who played against them. i’d show u the link but i don’t know how to….LOL. i ain’t the most computer literate homey.

also read this one

The Organization of Chinese-Americans has released multiple statements condemning the picture. George Wu, deputy director of the group, said, “it is unfortunate that this type of imagery would rear its head during something that is supposed to be a time of world unity.” Response in Beijing has been muted so far.

yes they are americans, but they are also chinese, and that’s the point.

hypersensitive? maybe they have a reason to be? ever thought of that?

can we rec the next 4 or 5 post so we can be done with this one? i have a habit of of reading every new comment and until this one is gone, i will continue to read it and defend my stance on the issue.

If it’s obvious why do I hafta point it out? Why does everyone come up with these conspiracy theories instead of looking for the simple solution? When you get a splinter in the finger it’s best to squeeze it out and move on than spend a month complaining that the splinter was out to get you.

something off the topic, i don’t care if he is only 17, i watched the spain and croatia game last nite and rubio sux. he is only compared to pistol pete cuz they have the same haircut. he lacks athleticism in every manner to play in the NBA. bellienellie has more potential than rubio. i knew all this talk was the same kinda bull crap when adam morrsion was going to be the next larry bird.

What a revolutionary idea

Just because a player looks like a past great, doesn’t mean they will play like them… humm, I think you’re on to something. Just don’t tell mass media, it’ll ruin their mojo. Kinda like you never see players compared to other players of a different race.

I think it all just boils down to, “People are stupid”, not some, all people (well, except me of course ;-). Larry Bird had a terrible mustache, and he’s white, so Adam Morrison must be like Bird. I saw a black guy in the locker room the other day and he had a huge !#$, all black guys must have huge !#$s. People who believe stereotypes (especially the one about white guys being small. White guys are really, really huge, trust me, we are… 510-884-3327 for any ladies out there) are especially stupid. You can either ignore their stupidity and stand above it, or you can get down in the muck and fight a lose-lose battle with them.

People love Rubio cuz he has a cool friking name. I wish I had a name like that.

Oh, and splinters are, by nature, unthinking beings. If you’re getting lots of splinters for one reason or another, it’s your fault. Maybe it wasn’t the best analogy ever, but the point was: “The simplest explanation is often true. Trying to convince yourself of a more complex explanation is usually a misguided waste of time.”

nice response dubs, i thoroughly enjoyed it.

is it true what i hear bout how unfriendly boston folks are? i live here in socal and had some coworkers from boston just transfer here. they tell me its absolutlely 100% true.

Definitely not as friendly as Bay Area folks

But not unfriendly, either.

Basically, in NY (my current residence) and Boston (my hometown), the default setting on people is a few degrees colder than in the Bay. But if you make a little effort to be friendly, you generally get friendliness in return. Unless of course you’re wearing the wrong team’s colors. Wear a Yankees cap in Boston and all bets are off…

Ouch.

Yeah, I grew up with a few fvcktards like that.

With them, the Yankees thing is basically a pretext. even though I’m a Sox diehard, they’d gladly do the same to me for my swarthy looks, my exotic sounding last name, my gay friends, my left-leaning politics, whatever.

OK, nuttinbutnet’s friend is right, it’s way better in the Bay. I never got anything but a gentle ribbing for wearing a Sox cap in the Coliseum, even in 2003 when we graciously ushered the A’s out of the playoffs (punctuated by Derek Lowe’s classless gesture to Tejada). The worst team-related intimidation I ever witnessed in the Bay Area was when a cute Stanford co-ed would wander too close our Cal student section, and be greeted by a chorus of lusty cries of “TAKE OFF THAT RED SHIRT!!!!!”

I hope you noticed the sarcasm wasn't meant to be insulting to you...

Just to those idiot media folks.

Like Sleepy said, in Boston, it’s freaking cold for 5-6 months of the year. This leads to people moving quickly when they’re outside and not stopping to say “how are you” to strangers in the winter. People get in that mode and don’t switch out of it so much during the summer. Doesn’t mean they’re mean, or aloof… unless you’re a Yankees fan.
