Where is the playing time for Buike?

Looking at the Warrior's roster, I'm worried that there isn't going to be enough minutes to go around for Azubuike. Even if Marcus Williams doesn't get significant playing time, which I fully expect he will when the Warriors need a true point guard, Buike is still buried behind Jackson, Maggette, and arguably Harrington.

And if Marcus Williams forces Nelson's hand, sliding Monta to off guard, then Buike may never play. I just wish we'd never have signed Maggette.  He's a redundant piece, and just might be stifling the growth of Buike, whom I'd personally rather see out there than Mags.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

he also played the 4 last year

i think that he will probably be the first option of the bench because he gives nellie the most flexability with his line up. more that williams does

be the change you wish to see in the world.

Buried behind SJax,Mags and Al?

Those will probably be 3 starters. So I don’t get how that would actually be “Buried” behind them, he’ll get good role player minutes.

And I also don’t get how Mag is a redundant piece either? He attacks the paint hard and is a pretty good shooter who can consitently create for himself?

Buike will get some PT...

His minutes may be somewhat spotty but he will definitely get more than last season. If monta plays the 2 and marcus plays 1, then buike will be more screwed but not totally. Look at the bright side, row-knee turiaf will have something to cheerlead for on the bench…buikes biceps! Maybe he and buike can do the robot while cheering on monta?

Don't forget about Magette...

and his bulging biceps. At least the crowd will always get a gun show.

hmmm

It’s all about depth…

Remember last year against the Lakers? Buike played exceptional defense against Kobe, which means Nellie will probably use him to guard the elite guards n the league.

We also have to remember that Buike’s injury played a role in his lack of minutes last season. So if he remains healthy, hopefully we’ll see those MONSTROUS dunks that he had the beginning of last season, the whole year.

And if he doesn’t play that much, he’ll definitely be useful for teaching BWright and AR how to build some MUSKLE. okbye

yes

you’re right-mags is redundant/superfluous. but he creates for himself and won’t need monta to be a traditional point guard, either, to be effective. i remember someone saying long ago, that it would be interesting if we could get maggette, and retain bukie, because of the whole “gun show” thing…but yes, the team is very, very deep

Buike is are backup swingman. He is the Pietrus of last year,

except he wont have to play pf. He is our first option for the 2 and 3 spots. He is going to get more pt than Randolph who is his only competition for PT as the backup 3, and he is going to get more PT than Bellineli who is his competition for the 2 spot. He may even replace AL or whoever if Nellie wants small ball and move Jax to the 4 and play wiht the other starters. Buike Turiaf Wright and Wiliams are coming off the bench regularly, thats the plan this year, depth.

I wish people

would stop hating on Maggette. He is a “poor man’s” Paul Pierce (which is still really good). Look at their stat sheets over the past five seasons. The only area in which Paul Pierce is markedly better is in Assists.

To clarify, I’m not saying that Maggette is as good as Paul Pierce. I’m just saying he is a really good player and shares some similarities to Paul Pierce.

Depth chart and mins/game

Buike was the 6th man last year, in terms of MPG, and he will likely be this year too. Actually, if Harrington, Jackson, or Maggette are ever hurt, I would guess that he starts some games (he had 17 starts last year)

Last year’s depth chart:

1. bd / cj watson
2. ellis / buike / belinelli
3. jax / pietrus / barnes
4. harrington / cro / bwright
5. ab / webber / pob / kosta

This year’s current/likely depth chart:

1. ellis / cj watson / marcus williams
2. jax / buike / belinelli
3. maggette / randolph / morrow
4. harrington / bwright / hendrix
5. ab / turiaf / kosta

Last year’s minutes/game:

1. Stephen Jackson 39.1
2. Baron Davis 39.0
3. Monta Ellis 37.9
4. Andris Biedrins 27.3
5. Al Harrington 27.0
6. Kelenna Azubuike 21.4
7. Mickael Pietrus 19.9
8. Matt Barnes 19.4
9. Chris Webber 14.0
10. C.J. Watson 11.5
11. Austin Croshere 10.4
12. Brandan Wright 9.9
13. Marco Belinelli 7.3
14. Kosta Perovic 5.4
15. Patrick O’Bryant 4.1

Using the same numbers as last year (which won’t be exactly right, but it’s as good a starting point as any), and guessing at who Nellie will play, here is a possible projection for playing time this year:

1. Stephen Jackson 39.1
2. Monta Ellis 39.0
3. Andris Biedrins 37.9
4. Corey Maggette 27.3
5. Al Harrington 27.0
6. Kelenna Azubuike 21.4
7. Ronny Turiaf 19.9
8. CJ Watson 19.4
9. Anthony Randolph 14.0
10. Brandan Wright 11.5
11. Marco Belinelli 10.4
12. Marcus Williams 9.9
13. Richard Hendrix 7.3
14. Anthony Morrow 5.4
15. Kosta Perovic 4.1

projected minutes..lol

i love cj but not for no 20 minutes a game! they didnt give up a protected #1 for marcus to bury him on the bench..and maggette better play more than 27min a game for 10 mil!!

Jackson:maybe
Monta:of course
Biedrins:around 35 mins sounds better
Maggette:32 mins sounds right
Harrington:25 because turiaf and wright deserves pt too
Buike:15 mins
Turiaf:20 sounds good
Watson:5 mins maybe less williams is way better
Randolph:6 mins just because hes just a rookie unless he shines in the second half of the season
Wright:13 mins
Belinelli:maybe 5 beacuse of all the guards on the team unless nellie decides to run him at point during the game
Willliams:14 because hes a TRUE point
Hendrix:5 mins maybe more in the utah and hornets games.at least the games where we need a “banger”
Morrow:maybe less than a min because he isnt really known except for the summer league but hes a great shooter and might find a place somewhere on the team
Perovic:can we just get rid of him already ahaha send him to europe or sumthin

by ceejayybreh on Aug 18, 2008 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i'd be surprised

if cj, randolph, hendrix, belinelli, morrow or kosta got even half the minutes you are projecting. marcus will play way more and so will maggette. is the math on those minutes correct? it seems like that’s too much pt to go around.

by cap'n hack on Aug 19, 2008 12:54 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The problem is that the 7.9 minutes are going to come in only 20 games

Look at BWright last year. He played in 38 games and got 9.9 minutes on average. If you average that over 82 games, that’s less than 5 per. Hendrix will probably get 7.9 minutes/game, but in only 15-20 games. Heck, Belinelli even got 7.3 minutes/game in 33 games.

I still think it’s silly to project minutes on a blog for a team whose coach is notorious for doing crazy stuff. For all we know, he’ll try to get a mismatch by throwing out Randolph/TMNT/Wright/Turiaf/Beans…

by Dubs fan in Boston on Aug 19, 2008 6:47 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

With Nelson’s rotations and lineups, the 5 position “depth chart” isn’t terribly relevant. We’re still more likely to see lineups with 3 SF/SG types than we are to see the tail end of either the PG or C/PF depth chart.

I do reasonably see Nelson using Biedrins for 38 minutes a night. Nelson has rarely if ever used any center that often. I would be shocked if he averaged more than 34 minutes a night for the season.

by jae on Aug 19, 2008 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Plus

Beans still won’t be able to stay on the floor that long. And with Turiaf (a real backup center!) backing him up, Nelson will have less of an excuse to leave Beans out there in foul trouble. I too think 34 is on the high end.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Aug 19, 2008 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Harrington

isn’t likely to see time at SF, we need him elsewhere regardless of how well Wright develops and how much Turiaf plays – it would be very rare to see three of our four bigs (AB being the fourth) on the floor at the same time

wouldn’t worry about KAz’s time, but Marco’s time should be pretty limited unless injury opens the door – he’s the one buried, and rightly so

by hardcore on Aug 18, 2008 4:11 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Correction

Andris Biedrins played around 27 mpg.
Leaving that extra 10 mpg for other players.
also,
I think WIlliams is more likely to come off 2nd rather than 3rd for the point.
Watson isn’t as good a passer or scorer.
Have they even signed Hendrix? lol. I sorta forgot about him.

1. Marcus Williams got buried in Jersey’s depth chart and ended up as the 4th stringer behind Harris, Dooling, and Armstrong. It’d be nice to project him as a real impact player for us, but chances are that he probably won’t be. A solid backup point guard? Hopefully. Our starting PG of the future? Doubtful. Besides, we don’t want to see Monta or Williams defending shooting guards anyway. Trust me, we don’t.

2. Belinelli hasn’t shown us anything. He’s essentially the same dude he was last season, which was essentially probably the same dude he was in Europe. With the way he’s been shooting the ball around 40% in the league means he’s on his way out of the league after his contract expires. Azubuike is definitely in the best position to be the first guard off the bench.

3. Don’t even get me started on CJ Watson. As much as I want the guy to succeed, he’s still only a fringe 15th man-type guy.

So don’t worry, Azubuike will probably get the same amount of PT (if not more) that he has been getting.

by YaHeard on Aug 18, 2008 4:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

rough minute distribution

Ellis 38 / Williams 10
Maggette 24 / Azubuike 24
Jackson 36 / Maggette 12
Harrington 30 / Wright 15 / Hendrix 3
Biedrins 30 / Turiaf 18

by YaHeard on Aug 18, 2008 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

wut about marco belinelli morrow and especially randolph who is sure to get a little pt beacuse of the latent he displayed in the summer league. with nelson as coach noone can predict the lineups he will use on the court or the minutes the players will recieve. just hope all the players get the minutes they deserve.

by ceejayybreh on Aug 18, 2008 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

how can people judge Belinelli...

when they haven’t actually seen him in any other role but basically garbage time. if you go on youtube and look him up…you can find videos of him in Europe. the dude can ball. not great on defense…but aside from jackson and harrington…its not like anyone ELSE on our team is.

i think what also added into belinelli not doing great in his minutes were one…it was garbage time. two, nelson’s refusal to play rookies appeared to have him press and try to hard when he WOULD get in. (wouldn’t you be pressing and trying a little hard even you got in and thought it might realistically be the only playing time you are given for weeks possibly?)

i think everyone needs to chill and reserve judgement till Belinelli is given actual playing time and can play his normal game.

by dannyschmanny on Aug 19, 2008 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

In garbage time, he has not shot the ball well. He’s billed as a shooter, yet he misses too many shots. The rest of his game hasn’t looked impressive enough in limited minutes to make me think that more playing time will cause me to appreciate it more.

Highlight videos can make anyone look great. Youtube is a poor scouting tool.

The myth that Nelson won’t play rookies has been busted time and time again. Do we really need Jamie and Adam to attack it? Nelson plays rookies when the rookies can play.

Kelenna Azubuike

I believe we’ll use Kelenna in the 2nd unit along with Marco, Brandan, Marcus, and Ronny. Until Anthony Randolph proves he can develop his body more, we’ll see Kelenna playing lesser minutes. So far, I see Anthony Randolph rounding out the 10th, 11th, or 12th spot.

by Phil T28 on Aug 18, 2008 6:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

we should use buike or otherwise...

the 3 mil or watever wer paying him will have been wasted and buike has the potential to be a very solid player in this league

by Azubuike is the G.O.A.T on Aug 18, 2008 10:47 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

With maggette on our team we are a potential playoff team but without him it takes away another guy that can take over the game at any moment. Sure azuibuike is a great player which i would like to see develop also but if we wait on him then we’ll be using another year on player development. Wouldn’t you rather see the warriors with someone who has already made a name for himself as our starting shooting guard rather than a D leaguer who has yet to really showed his true potential. Im not doubting that kelenna could lead the team im just saying that id rather risk everything on maggette rather than buike.

by ceejayybreh on Aug 18, 2008 11:04 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

who said anything about relying on him to lead the team? we already have monta, maggette and beans (and ofcourse captain jack) for that. maggette is a starter. buike is a bench guy. the concern was where there would be minutes for him. but he is basically gonna get the immediate minutes off the bench in the 2 and 3 spots that went to barnes/peitrus last year.
buike showed…even being injured last year that he can have an impact off the bench. steadily got better at driving the lane, was great on late game 3’s etc.
so yes…id much rather have him being young, already a good player with a room to get even better coming off the bench than someone else that would probably turn into a bust anyway.

by dannyschmanny on Aug 19, 2008 11:39 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I liked Buike last year…until the end of the season where he missed alot of BIG shots in big games. He’s kind of an over-rated defender too. He has good athletic ability, but with an aloof type of game. I think he’s going to quickly be passed up by Morrow. On the plus side, he can play 3 positions pretty well, so he may get a few minutes there. I don’t think he should take time away from anyone like Wright, Turiaf, Morrow, or Randolph though. I also think CM should think about trading away Al Harrington, and/or Bellineli. I don’t see either one of those two getting any better, and Marco has already been outplayed by 2 rookies!

by cmullin on Aug 19, 2008 10:27 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

oh my god

can we get rid of these azabuike idiots. Maggette is so much better than azabuike it is not even funny. and please how the hell would harrington be taking away playing time from friggn azabuike.
