Karl Malone vs Lebron

In case you missed it, one of the Olympic commentators compared the Mailman to Lebron the other day.  I looked it up

Mailman: 6'9" 259 lbs.

Lebron:   6'8" 250 lbs.

This comparison knocked me out.  I would have thought Malone was way bigger and taller than Lebron based on my memories of the 90% post play with 10% 15 foot wide open jumper

Malone was great, but he moved like he had 50 pound weights in each shoe.  As Lebron gets older, you have to think he will develop more of a post-up game just so he can grab a breather and get some easier points on the offensive end.  Running all over the floor for 48 minutes isnt going to make sense anymore.

Is there any doubt Lebron will be the best player ever?  Who cares what the stats say about Oscar Robertson, Wilt, and whoever...none of them played an all around dominant game like Lebron is developing.

Does anyone disagree?

Um

What about that one guy Michael Jordan?

by dajrichshow on Aug 19, 2008 11:42 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

MJ!!!

being the greatest is about heart…..michael carried his team……….

until Lebron has 6 NBA Finals MVPs, he’ll never be on the same level as michael…

though i did like what he showed in that one dertroit series…..

the thing with MJ is that whenever the game called for it…He would rise his play to the occassion…and while Lebron shows flashes of that same determination, nobody compares to an MJ level……..

by BroyTheTruth on Aug 21, 2008 5:53 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Assuming he stays healthy

There’s no doubt he’ll be better than Malone. He’s probably better than the Mailman already. The Mailman was basically a one-trick pony who had the good fortune to play with the 2nd best PG of all time.

There’s plenty of doubt LeBron will be the Best Player Ever. You can throw out the stats altogether and note that Bill Russell led his team to 11 championships in 13 seasons (How many does LeBron have again?) Or look at the stats and see that LBJ still isn’t quite in the class of Wilt, Bird, Magic, or MJ.

If I had to guess, I’d say he’ll be in the same “tier” as Magic and Bird, a half-notch behind MJ, when all is said and done. (Dominant Big Men — Russell, Wilt, Shaq — is really almost a different category).

LeBron v. Kobe

who is better RIGHT NOW? I’d argue LeBron, but I’d like to hear what some others think

by sam23 on Aug 19, 2008 12:24 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Easy IMHO

Kobe by far as a pure player, but Lebron as a teammate

by pinkycheal on Aug 19, 2008 12:52 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

that word "pure"

ambivalent, overused, almost irrelevant. what exactly does “pure” mean these days -_-

by dso on Aug 20, 2008 8:36 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kobe is better

…he is a little bit more skillful than James, but of course he has been around the league much longer. Not to mention the luxury of being coached by Jackson.

by JCKAZU on Aug 19, 2008 1:06 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i'm with you on lebron

he is just too dominant on the offensive end. kobe is better on d, but lebron just destroys the opposition on offense. if my team is down ten points going into the fourth quarter, there is no way i don’t take lebron over kobe to lead us to victory. he just cannot be stopped most of the time.

by cap'n hack on Aug 20, 2008 12:52 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree

Ill take Lebron in just about any scenario unless its a team in need of getting one defensive stop.

by sam23 on Aug 20, 2008 1:17 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

but

Lebron still can’t make a final shot. I would have Lebron destroy the defense with his 3 step jump hella high and slam it. than last 3-5 seconds have Kobe take the final shot.

So I don't have a signature well these words would do! Who knew that upgrades can have downgrades too!

by 24k state fan since 87 on Aug 20, 2008 1:58 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

that's not true anymore

the guy has made his fair share of clutch shots in the past couple years. i guess some perceptions never die. kobe might be more clutch, but that’s because there might not be anyone more clutch than kobe, not because lebron can’t make the last shot.

by cap'n hack on Aug 20, 2008 8:21 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kobe is a better shooter and a better on the ball defender. I would say that Lebron is a better finisher at the rim and a better off the ball defender (He is looking like Marcus Camby coming over and blocking shots from the weak side in the Olympic games). Given that Lebron is as good as he is now at 24 and Kobe is 29 and will be 30 on the 23rd of this month, I see Lebron passing Kobe as the better player in the near future as he gets better and Kobe’s age starts to catch up to him. But as for RIGHT NOW, it’s Kobe by a small margin.

by NBA on Aug 21, 2008 2:50 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Celtics

Would probably disagree.

In the finals, Pierce and Posey were able to manhandle and contain Kobe physically. They were basically helpless v. LeBron.

As an aside, I think people kinda forget about P2 ‘cos he’s not on Redeem Team, but in the finals he outplayed Kobe; and over the course of his career, he’s been just about as good of a player as Kobe. If you twisted my arm, I’d rank the top 4 NBA wing players:

1. LeBron
2. Kobe
3. Wade
4. Pierce

But it’s really, really close. I think if Pierce took care of his body the way Kobe does and MJ did, he could actually be #1.

Don't mess with ^^^^ !!

by Sleepy Freud on Aug 21, 2008 3:41 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Pierce

I agree about Pierce’s fitness. His body doesn’t scream “elite level athlete” to me. It could be holding him back from being mentioned in the same breath as the others more often.

I pray i never have to use a gun again...

...unless i'm at a strip club parking lot...

...and somebody tries to run me over with their car...

...But how often does that happen??

by ssmokinjoe on Aug 21, 2008 8:40 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

interesting point

Pierce is pretty damn good, but I wouldnt put him in the league’s best player discussion just yet. I dont want to overreact to one amazing playoff run.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

by kenntoe on Aug 19, 2008 12:40 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yea

thats kinda what I was thinkin. If he develops a more reliable outside shot, THEN he could possibly take a break a little more.

I care what the stats say

Oscar averaged a triple double. is that not all-around game enough for you?

by BobbyLeeHurt on Aug 19, 2008 1:47 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just for fun

A few of Wilt’s best all-around seasons:

1961-62: 50.4 PPG / 25.7 RPG / 2.4 APG (+ maybe most hilariously, 17.0 FT attempts per game)
1966-67: 24.1 PPG / 24.2 RPG / 7.2 APG (+ shot 68.3% from the field)
1967-68: 24.3 PPG / 23.8 RPG / 8.6 APG (+ led NBA in assists)

Don't mess with ^^^^ !!

by Sleepy Freud on Aug 19, 2008 2:58 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So does it show

How weak the competition was or how good he was?

by dajrichshow on Aug 19, 2008 5:15 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No,

but the stats are still really sick
24 and 24 with 8.6 assists. Thats good no matter what

I think we’re past the days of one player dominating the floor like in Wilt’s days. As time goes by and the players get better, it’s turning into more of a team oriented game instead of it revolving around one player. Don’t get me wrong, we will still have superstars leading teams, but not dominating the stats sheets like in Wilt’s days.

i dont think so

this is what i think

greatest champion- bill russel
greatest stats- oscar robinson
most dominant- wilt chamerlain
greatest of all time- Michael Jordan

but i would take LeBron in a 1 on 1 competition over all of them because of his freakishly athletic body and skills

but it is tough to compare players in different eras, such as Wilt was 7’1 275 in his prime going against a lot of teams whose other centers were about 6’6 210 i think if u put shaq in Wilts era he would put up the same numbers, maybe even better ones put LeBron in that era, hes got 3 inches and 40 pounds on his oposing teams center while playing the SF position i dont think he would have a problem puuting up 45 ppg and 15-20 rpg

ur opinion also depends on your age i think ppl ages of 15 and up will all say Michael Jordan because they lived during his era and i dont think they want to call anyone else the greatest of all time kids around the ages of 10 and under now i think will all be convinced that LeBron is the greatest of all time (especially if he wins some championships) cuz there the ones that watched him play
LeBron has the potential to be the greatest player of all time, but its going to take about 5 championships but as of now its definitly MJ

Kobe>Lebron?

How can you justify that? At 23 Lebron is accomplishing WAY MORE than what Kobe had done at the same age. Kobe is in his prime, while Lebron is still expanding his game. I don’t see how Kobe fans can say he is the best player in the league. He is the best scorer in the league, but best ALL-AROUND player? Hands down it’s Lebron James. Look at their career averages, nowhere near the same in apg or rpg. Similar scoring, with Kobe having the upper hand on 3’s and ft %. I’m not a Kobe hater or a Lebron fanatic. Kobe doesn’t make his teamates better, while LeBron does. Individually Kobe might shine over LeBron, but in the end I would, like any smart person, pick Lebron to be on my team rather than Kobe.

- iBall, do you?

by iBallGSW on Aug 19, 2008 6:12 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

to be fair

the question I posed was who is better RIGHT NOW, not who was better at 23. I think LeBron is still the better player, but its not like you cant make the argument for Kobe.

by sam23 on Aug 20, 2008 1:16 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

well

at the time he not the primary player Shaq was. if you were put at 23 and your 2nd best option is not really that good you have to take control. The Lakers had a lot of options so Kobe did not have to dominate. And now he is showing what he can do with a weak team. But Lebron has the potential to become great he just has to have somebody tell him his jump shot looks retarded . I really think he should start shooting left handed because if you see vids of him he does everything left handed except shoot, thus the 60 something FT%, but oh well probably someone on team USA will teach him he is shooting better and talking a lot with Kobe.

So I don't have a signature well these words would do! Who knew that upgrades can have downgrades too!

stats and the mj comparison

MJ never had a great team, but he did have Pippen and Rodman (anyone who underestimates the rodman factor is crazy) along with good position players. If Lebron can get together with a similar team, I think you will see the Lebron legacy equal that of MJ.
As far as Kobe goes, he is great. period. I think it is hard to see Kobe as equal to MJ or potentially Lebron though because of his character flaws. Those do make a difference to me despite his ability to do crazy shit on the court.
Big O and Wilt, were great, but had a lower quality of competition on the court, you cant argue that. They would have been great if they were playing now, and I think we can throw Bill Russel into that mix, but they would not have been the dominant forces they were. I can easily see Lebron in the post against any of of those guys – either faking and driving around them or hitting a fade away Hakeem style.

Yes, He drove shaq away from the lakers. Because of his abrasive personality Kobe will never earn the respect of his own teammates like MJ did so he’ll never be a consistent winner. Lebron probably has a better personality to build a team around but I’m worried about his desire to go play for jay z, that seems sorta distracting and counter productive for his basketball game?
