Stephen Jackson: The Return of the Malcontent
I knew he could not be a saint for ever. Now it seems he deserves to have a long term contract equivalent to Monta or Biedrins. Stephen may need to hire a smart agent because I do not believe he will last long here if he keeps making these claims. This is one of the reasons he was run out of town by the Pacers.

I hope Stephen can realize to keep it quiet and have another trouble free, productive season. Where are the Warriors going to get this money. I am sure we will have to extend Wright and Randolph along with our current salaries. I don't want Jackson being a key part of our team in 3,4,5, years. Along with Harrington they both should not be here in 3 or 4 years. However giving Jackson a reasonable 2 year 16 million extention now would give him more motivation now and we could raise his trade value overall. Therefore we could make Jax play up to his potential and before that extention begins then trade him. Or we could trade him back to a team like the Spurs next year looking for an expiring contract and a piece to give them one more championship and a contract that is expiring so they can pursue other options in free agency or opening up positions for draft picks. There are many options for the warriors with Jackson. One we cannot afford is a replay of his tenture with the pacers for the last 3 years.

tough decision
real tough. I think you either let him walk in 2 years or trade him at the next sign of dissatisfaction. remember, if we are winning here, he will be fine.
by Foulacy on Aug 23, 2008 2:18 PM PDT 0 recs
winning might not be the only issue
the pacers were very good when a certain unpleasantness occurred. i think it has more to do with the fact that the fans and his teammates respect him as a basketball player and a leader. he has shown that when given responsibility, he will do what he needs to do to prove that he’s earned it.

And how much winning do you expect?
The team is starting to turn back into the rebuilding phase around Monta, Andris, Randolph, and Wright. Winning 40-45 games would probably be really good. Stephen Jackson knows this is his LAST chance at a good contract, and being relatively underpaid (but underpaid for his own problems he caused himself) doesn’t make it easier in his mind, I’m sure.
He wants to get paid and that will be a priority. Winning will be nice, but I’m not sure if this season is about winning and I’m sure Jackson is aware of that.
The next deal is likely Jackson’s last NBA contract. He really needs to make it count. I don’t think these statements help him, but he’s gotta try something— I just don’t think his rep has truly been repaired and a lot of his redemption might be seen as mostly situational; as in, not easily duplicated on another team.
And I doubt he’s in the longterm picture for the Dubs, and again, Jackson can see that. He’s in a tough spot and needs that money.

Sorry but the poll shows the fans disagree with you
I’m gonna take a guess that you’re a recent fan… which is all good, welcome to the Warriors but please understand Jack is the heart and soul of our team and is completely changed now that he’s in the Bay Area and not in redneck land.
Are you from the bay or redneck land? Kinda hard to tell.

actually are you the red neck
because at the moment the last option which i suggested is at 27 percent. this is the most chosen option so people dont disagree with me. and i was saying there were many options with jack so i wasnt be ing a hater.

actually
the 28% means that most people DO disagree with you. 72% of them to be exact. more people chose that option than any of the others, but most people don’t want that do happen.

in two years he’s not on the team if we let him walk, and maybe that is the right call, i have no idea what the future holds for our beloved captain, but trading him now is dumb. the guy asked for an extention, he didn’t punch monta ellis in the face or spit on andris biedrins. he’s not being disruptive or a malcontent, leave the guy alone and let him lead the team.

oh
and when can we expect your next trade idea? it seems like you’d love to see jack out the door, so how about something along the lines of: stephen jackson, CJ WATSON, and marco belinelli, for caron butler and deshawn stevenson? you’d have to work out the details for me, as i am not nearly as adept at throwing random nonsense that i’ve loosely and illogically justified into the trade machine to see if the salaries match as you are.

+10000000000(that's nerd talk for "I agree", I think)
the headline for this post seems a bit racist. A reasonable request by a veteran player to be compensated for increased production is met with calls of “malcontent” and for him to “keep it quiet”. yessuh, massuh! he’gon’ work real hard fo’ya and ain’t gon’ say nu’un!

Seriously dude
montadaboss, you need to think a little more when you make a post. Don’t say anything that could even remotely be construed as racist, otherwise we’ll come after you. It deeply pains me to hear the word “malcontent”.
Bimbo, I was also made fun of a lot in high school for being good at math and taking programming classes. Words like “nerd”, “geek”, and “dork” were the primary cannon fodder for the athletes that used to make fun of me. Hearing those words reminds me of all the swirlys, wet willies, and being laughed at in the cafeteria. Please apologize to me and my other friends who were blessed with a good mind instead of a good throwing arm. I think I’m gonna cry now…
I hate Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappelle, and Russel Peters because they make fun of white people like me. They also make fun of other kinds of people, which hurts me deep down because my ancestry is so mixed that I don't know what my official "race" is... so I get offended for all races!

Jackson
is more productive to us than to any other team and other teams know that. He’s old. Not very many teams want Jackson and even if they did they would not give us anything that would be worth more than Jackson on our team. Let him walk in 2.
by DuikeBuike on Aug 23, 2008 5:36 PM PDT 0 recs
what players don't really seem to understand
is that salaries are not retroactive. that’s why they call them contracts. the team and the player (whatever the sport may be) agree on a certain amount of money over a certain period of time, based on what the team thinks the player is worth and based on what the player thinks he deserves. then the player plays out for that time period for that amount of money, regardless of how well he actually performs. i don’t care who you are, baron davis, stephen jackson, adonal foyle, there’s no such thing as being paid for “what you deserve” or “what you did in the past”. a team will pay the player and give them an offer based on how think he will play over that period of time. that’s it. anything else is being a financially irresponsible organization.
phew. ok. that being said, i’m ok with extend jack beyond the next two years, but not for what he’s asking. yes, he played a big part in the dubz’ return to the playoffs, and has been an integral part of the team. but even so, there is no guaranteeing that he will be a legitimate all-star in the foreseeable future. and should therefore not be paid as such. he’s getting older, and surely not more productive. the warriors should not and cannot afford to give him a significant contract extension.
so all that being said, extend him for a fair amount or let him walk in 2. if he shows real signs of being angry, threaten to trade him. i actually think that he will realize that there is no other organization that he wants/can really be a part of, and be as thoroughly appreciated.
by Run Dubz on Aug 23, 2008 8:56 PM PDT 0 recs
i dont think this is a situtation
where you can wait on. mully has to do something to care of this situation. either extend his contract with a fat raise or trade him. if mully decides to just let his contract run out jax will probably go from being the heart of the team to the cancer on the team.
be the change you wish to see in the world.
by Rach on Aug 23, 2008 9:33 PM PDT 0 recs
possible, but unlikely
Players have something to play for, even if they don’t get the contracts they want. Jackson has a bad reputation for being volatile and difficult to coach. If he wants to get even a halfway decent offer in the next 2 seasons, be it the dubs or any other team, the last thing he will want to do is drag a team down for not giving him the contract he wants. He could try to go the Davis route, but unfortunatly for him he’s a swingman, and the league is chock full of players with similiar skill sets as him at the position he plays. The thing that allowed Davis to get his big contract extension was that he plays point, and point guards are a dime a dozen (good ones that is).
To sum it up, aging malcontent swingmen aren’t exactly sought after, if he wants to get the best deal possible, he should just shut up, play his best ball, and let the dice roll where they will.

Jax is not a malcontent, he’s an experienced player who don’t take no shit. He’s earned his right to speak out. If he’s complaining then something is wrong. Jax knows more about basketball than all our youngsters put together. The team would do well to listen to him.

if him complaining means something is wrong...
then the refs have never made a correct call. While Jack is taking full advantage of his first amendment rights with the refs after a sloppy lay-up attempt, the opponent is putting together a fast break on the other end facing a warriors defense sans Jack (a defense already known for its inefficiency). I do think he has leadership skills but he does not lead by example, because if that was the case Monta would be chucking up contested threes and ruining fast break opportunities. Trade him for Tony.psd. Tony has demonstrated leadership skills, is respected in the GSOM community and could probably put together a comparable FG %.

Did I miss an article or something?
I don’t understand why people are saying that his attitude is “on the down side” right now.
Has he said or done anything this off season to make anyone think his loyalty to this team has wavered?
All I’ve from Jack this off season is the opening of his whatever-charity foundation.
Aside from that I have heard to salary-posturing from him, so why are people on this site either paranoid about his ability and output on the court or worried about his personality and demands?
I think this off season, like any other off season, is making fans paranoid and anxious.
Nothing is changing. Let’s just wait until the season starts.

huh?
"I knew he could not be a saint for ever. "
What has Jax done?
"… I do not believe he will last long here if he keeps making these claims. "
uh, WHAT claims?
“I hope Stephen can realize to keep it quiet …”
Maybe I missed something, but there’s zero link to any act, claim, etc. that would warrant this post – are you just stirring it up to stir it up or is there something tangible you’re reacting to? Where’s the beef?
Mullin’s recent history is not to overpay to extend vets long in the tooth, I’d expect the same here. But with all our youth now I don’t see any reason to hustle him out the door (or Al for that matter).
by hardcore on Aug 24, 2008 9:44 AM PDT 0 recs
yeah
a link would be great here. i haven’t seen anything about this outside of GSoM. and if it turns out that the only thing the guy said was “i want a contract extension” (which is the only claim made here), why would that be upsetting? if he started saying things like “monta ellis is a punk, i should make twice what he does,” then there might be a problem, but saying he wants more job security doesn’t upset me.

He will Realize his "REAL" Value and Resign
I think he is a product of the system and he will eventually realize it. I do like the idea of him being a veteran coming off the bench at 32. He has heart and when he wants to, can shut players down and hit a big shot. Just sit back and enjoy the ride – things will come together.

I think Kawakami has it about right — Jack doesn’t have much leverage here. The only way he gets a big contract, here or elsewhere, is by continuing to prove he’s a reliable commodity, not by grandstanding two years out.
Interesting that Jack makes it sound like the Warriors are open to extending him. I hope they’re not… I love the guy, but that is absolutely not a commitment we need to be making right now.
My guess is that he gets no extension and that he sucks it up and has a solid year anyway. He’s no fool.
by onlxn on Aug 24, 2008 5:09 PM PDT 0 recs
MT also wrote
Jackson was emphatic about his happiness in being with the Warriors. He said he was excited about the direction of the team and is looking forward to next season.
“Losing B.D. hurt me,” Jackson said of Davis. “That’s my boy — my brother more than my teammate. But the team we have, I’ll definitely be the first to say that we’re better than we were last year.”
This is NOT a malcontent, this is a veteran angling for some sweetner in his deal. Whether Mullin will, should, or could extend him is debatable. I agree with onlxn above: Jax’s no fool. He’ll play hard & well for either a trade or his next contract, or both.

The NBA is a business and Jackson wants his cut
Jackson is our leader and the veteran of this team. The NBA is a business so being the 5th highest paid player on the team gives him the opportunity to go in now and have his agent work an extension before the season begins. He is not trying to create any problems for the team. He just knows this is the time to make a move for more money before he hits 30. You can’t blame him for that.
by I miss J-Rich on Aug 26, 2008 10:19 AM PDT 0 recs
if he isnt trying to create any problems
for the team then he wouldnt have gone public. he would have gone to mully and kept everything in house. if jax really believes what he is saying when he was talking about his contrabution to the team and how he made this team so much better and deserves to get paid more because of it then he shouldnt have felt the need to go to the media.
