Jackson: A Worst Case Scenario

First of all, let me say that I am hopeful that Jack and his contract situation don't become a major issue during the season. I don't expect him to get any sort of extension before the season starts and I would think that once the season starts Jack will be just as loyal to his new teammates as he has been to all of his other ones and man up and play hard despite his perception that he is underpaid.

BUT, what if he does take it personally and can't get over it? I'll warn you that if you are not in the mood for hypotheticals stop reading now. This is all going to be pure speculation based on the idea that Jack will become a problem in the locker room and need to be moved. Let's be honest, I'm a little bored and there really hasn't been anything to talk about for a while.

So, here are a few ideas if things get ugly, like real ugly. It's important to keep in mind that these trades would be made under some duress (or perhaps before things completely  deteriorate) so they won't be ideal. Some are more optimistic than others, so take it for what it's worth.

#1

S. Jackson, M. Bellinelli

for

J. Terry, 1st Rnd pick

For GSW

Pros: Well, Jet would work pretty well in a backcourt with Monta. He could help handle the ball and facilitate the offense when need be. He would also space the floor and help open lanes for Monta and Maggs. He could play either guard position which Nellie would like. A mid-to-late first Rnd pick would always be nice (if we could get one out of them).

Cons: His contract is longer than Jack's so this would essentially kill any flexibility that we would have in 2010. Defense would definitely be an issue. Monta and Jet would likely be very soft and undersized on the defensive end.

For Dallas

Pros: They are definitely in win now mode this year and they don't really have a SG who is ideal for their system. Jackson would definitely make them a stronger defensive team and he plays well in an "iso" type system where he can space the floor, attack the basket 1 on 1, or post up. Plus it frees up some salary in 2010 at which point this team would probably be in rebuilding mode.

Cons: We all know what makes Jack less than ideal. After Howard's trouble they might not want to take on another guy with "character issues".

#2

Jack, Marco

for

Q. Richardson, D. Lee

Note: Lee is kind of a wildcard here. D'Antoni is reportedly not very high on Lee but he has received a lot of hype during his time in the league. This is kind of contingent on the NYK deciding that Lee doesn't fit in with their future plans. With the new management in NY I really have no idea what these guys are looking to do.

For GSW

Pros: We get a shooter to space the floor who has in the past excelled in an up-tempo system in Q-Rich and an extremely talented (if offensively limited) rebounder in Lee. We would maintain our financial flexibility if we don't decide to extend Lee at the end of the year. Of course if he turns out to be as good as a lot of people think he could be we would be happy to extend him.

Cons: Defense. Q-Rich is a big step down from Jack. He hasn't played well in quite a while. Lee could create a bit of a logjam in the front court (might not be a bad thing). Also, Lee doesn't make a whole lot of sense next to Andris offensively, so he might not make much sense long-term.

For NYK

Pros: Jack is definitely an upgrade over Q-Rich. Assuming that D'Antoni won't make much use of Lee, this trade would make them a better team. Plus, honestlly, Jack was born to be a Knick, right?

Cons: Are they really ready to give up on Lee? Is Jackson in NY a recipe for disaster? Are you really still reading this?

#3

S. Jackson, A. Harrington

for

A. Daniels, N. Young, A. Blatche, E. Thomas, 1st Rnd pick (maybe)

For GSW

Pros: Can you say youth movement? Al has reportedly quietly asked for a trade already so it would make sense to move them together if possible. Daniels would play well alongside Monta with his ability to run the offense and guard the opposing SG and be a positive veteran presence on the team. Young is an exciting young player who would fit in well in Nellie-ball and score in bunches. Blatche is a long athletic forward oozing with potential and is locked up for a few years at a very reasonable price. Thomas writes poetry and is politically active... yeah that's about it.

Cons: Well this would seal the deal. No playoffs. Definitely a step back with some hope for the future. Nick Young might not make a whole lot of sense next to Monta long-term in that they are both undersized SG's at this point in their career. We are giving up the two best players in the trade, and under normal circumstances you never want to do that.

For the Wiz

Pros: Hey, a line-up of Arenas, Jackson, Butler, Jamison, Anyone, with Harrington as a 6th man sounds pretty potent to me. They could win a lot of games with those guys. They get rid of Thomas' contract.

Cons: Are there enough shots to go around? Are they willing to part with their youth to commit to this line-up?

Conclusion

Well, after taking a look at some possibilities that might still be on the table if Jackson becomes a problem, I'm hoping even more that this is a non-issue. We are already on shaky ground and being forced into a trade this season could spell disaster. Let me make it clear that Jackson doesn't really have any leverage here beyond becoming a malcontent, but the fact that he might not be a part of Mullin's long-term plans might also compel him to trade him now while he is coming off of a career year (mostly thanks to high MPG and a ton of FGA's). Also, I can't believe that I wrote this much about such a vague hypothetical topic. Dang, I'm ready for training camp.

Questions:

What do you guys think we could get back for Jackson if Mullin decides to make a move this year?

Does this situation scare you?

Did I really just spend that much time writing about something that will probably never happen? Should I go to bed now?

have you ever heard of a...

“The self-fulfilling prophecy is, in the beginning, a false definition of the situation evoking a new behaviour which makes the original false conception come ‘true’. This specious validity of the self-fulfilling prophecy perpetuates a reign of error. For the prophet will cite the actual course of events as proof that he was right from the very beginning.” (Merton, Robert K (1968). Social Theory and Social Structure. New York: Free Press, p. 477.)

In other words, a prophecy declared as truth when it is actually false may sufficiently influence people, either through fear or logical confusion, so that their reactions ultimately fulfill the once-false prophecy.

Yep, the one L version is the Bizarro skeptic. If you want real quality skepticism stick with the original double LL version, in better stores near you.

I'm waiting for the Skeptic 2.1 release

The 1.0 is good and all.
But the 2.0 version is very, very buggy. Hoping the developers can fix some of those and release a patch pronto.

Anything is Possible

I really do believe that anything is possible at this point… for me… I really see this as a great opportunity to move players like Al & Jack because of our youth movement. I believe in giving as many minutes possible to the younger guys so that they can get real game time experience… players such as Hendrix and Randolph might not have to go straight to the D-League after all and may seeing the floor sooner than they think…

What do you think of a trade scenario with Michael Redd going to GS and Harrington & Jackson going to MIL?

I know its a ridiculous stretch but it doesn’t seem like Redd is completely happy on the Bucks and probably wants to move since the wins aren’t coming in… In Redd you get a tremendous shooter with clutch capability… A player that can definitely break zones just by shooting and of course this would spread the floor for players like Maggette and Ellis easily…

Works out on Real GM

First, why do we want Redd and his mammoth contract?

Second, why do we want Redd, who’s on a long term contract, in if we’re going to a “youth movement”?

Fail.

If you want to get rid of them...

Trade them for a crappy player or two and draft picks. That’ll enhance the youth movement… not that i believe in the youth movement.

Trading Jackson & Harrington

Frees up space for a new starter and there are more minutes to be allocated… You can put more players in the rotation since Harrington & Jackson are no longer there… You can just throw everything down the drain… You need something back… and I’m not too crazy about taking back more draft picks… that only keeps you running again hoping you get more steals in the draft… when will we stop? When everyone grows up? That’s going to take a while… and why would you want to trade for crappy players? That’s dumber than what I said… that = no positive for the Warriors… we might as well just keep Jackson & Harrington if were just getting back crap…

We want Redd because he’s F’ing good. He breaks zones and can be a lights out shooter, a clutch player… someone who can contribute immediately and can keep us possibly in playoff contention… I believe in the youth movement but only to a certain extent that I don’t want to just die and start the whole thing over.

P.S. I was just in Boston it was nice and I liked that Newbury St. I spent a lot of money there

Stop crying about it alright?!?! GO MULLIN.

by jeppalepala on Aug 25, 2008 9:10 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't believe in the youth movement

Redd shot just over 36% from beyond the arc last year. Worse than Jackson and Harrington. Ok, so he’s shot just over 38% for his career… which isn’t really all that great. He’s not known as a great defender, nor does he pick up any steals/blocks. He rebounds alright, and in general, he’d be a valuable piece on the team. But he’s going to make over $45M over the next 3 years. That’s a lot of money. And what for? If we’re getting rid of Jackson/Harrington to free up minutes for the young guys, we’re in full youth movement mode. That’s not when you want to trade for an overpaid shooting guard to take minutes. You’d want to trade for a couple of overpaid guys that come with draft picks. Bringing in Redd is counter productive in that sense.

Jax+TMNT>>>Redd. Redd, IMO is very overrated and overpaid.

PS. Newbury st. is… OK, good in the summer for a stroll. Glad you enjoyed it.

BTW,

real quick the basics of the ‘contract dispute’ is that Jack is now the 5th highest player on the team with his contract in the mid 7million range. He basically stated that he had a big hand in getting the franchise back the playoffs and getting us 48 wins last year, which he had. Since he cant renogatiote his deal, per CBA rules, he is looking for a contract extension for 2 years out for finacial security. The Warriors havent commented on the issue.

Jack

Things are going to be okay with him .. he seems to be in a better place and I wouldn’t take his words too seriously here. The team is going to have a hard time justifying an extension for Jackson – I think they’ll be looking to trade Al and see what they can get back contract wise before they go there.

by pree on Aug 25, 2008 11:29 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Thanks Pree

I’m glad to hear some positive news about Jack. Things can tend to get carried away when there is nothing else going on.

To be honest this whole post was basically my way of (in a round about way) showing how important Jack will be to this team this year. The more I think about the options we would be limited to if we traded him the more I hope that this is a non-issue.

Thanks Pree,

havent seen you around for a bit, but judging by the quality of posts lately, Im not entirely suprised. Im hoping we can keep Jack this year, without extending him, and if it really becomes an issue, try an move his expiring contract next offseason. Pree wondering if you can shed some light on a few questions a few of us got, should we expect Kosta to report to training camp, and is AMarrow and CWatson going to make it past training camp.

Olympic Mike,
good post Ive been wondring about this as well. Im in the mind frame, that we keep both Jack and Al, unless a sweetheart deal pops up or they really become locker room malcontents, and move thier expirig contracts next season or let them expire themselves. I like the Dallas trade the best, but I dont see us dealing with the Mavericks. The New York trade makes sense as well, but Q is a large contract for a decent player at best and DLee is overrated and wouldnt work well with Beans(officially our franchise center now). I doubt the Washington gives up some many young pieces for 2 players when they are so close to the luxary tax and would have very little flexibility to sign some other players to fill the gaps.
Anyway good post, even if it might all be hypothetical, It was well written and a good read.

Ellis to the rim.

Took some time off

I enjoyed the Olympics and wrote only a few things here and there. It’s good to clear the mind of the hustle and bustle of the NBA for a while .. agents call you every day and there’s not really a chance to relax. After Summer League, we get a chance to just sip mojitos and wonder if enjoying this tropical beverage makes me less of a man or something. Good times.

In any case, I have no news on Kosta, sorry. I’ve heard the speculation that he’s headed elsewhere, but the Warriors aren’t going to just give up his rights (like they did with Jasikevicius) unless there’s monetary savings involved. Considering Duffy’s past, I don’t think that happens. We’re talking about a guy that held Varejao out for .. what? A couple million? Not even.

Things look good for both Watson and Morrow, but training camp dictates all. The Warriors are brining in anohter guy that has a shot: more on him tomorrow :)

Sigh.

I’m gonna be real here because this is starting to get ridiculous. What is the point of being capped to the brim with a team that as of right now is unproven. I hope he doesn’t get an extension because he doesn’t deserve it. Yes, the 48 wins were great. Too bad you played with the best point guard in the league to get those. Monta shot lights out last year too. Don’t count your chickens, Jack. You’re far and away my favorite player on this team but you aren’t worth anymore than you’re getting paid.

I like the first one, but only if Jack is a locker room killer. This Stephen Jackson stuff is just a bunch of bull, people just want controversy. When he goes to Training Camp he will be find, I hope so.

Marcus Williams, just watch. This SIG won't be deleted till Warriors make the playoffs.

by AKA JustPlainOldDubsFan on Aug 25, 2008 6:49 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't like any of the trades...

Jackson is the veteran presence in the locker room… and thankfully he’s a highly vocal one. With this team being as young as it is, there is no reason to trade to trade the veteran who bridges the gap between young and old. Him and Harrington serve a large purpose on this team, with Jackson being the obvious better of the two.

I highly expect him to receive at least a two year extension at his current salary. It really isn’t much to ask given what he does for this team and he does deserve to get paid (at least more than Corey Maggette does). I have no idea why people here are stressing about giving someone who deserves to get paid what he’s actually worth.

by Mr. Monday Night on Aug 26, 2008 10:20 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i juuuuust been dying to ask this

Why do people put trades up when nobody likes them?! its not like the Warriors and Chris Mullen are like “hey I need a new trade idea let me go to goldenstateofmind.com read what they are saying and ill do it!” and in the history of gsom has anyone’s trade idea came about and worked?! I know its a slow time here but come on when I keep reading trades that have noway of forming its like wow. And most of the trades you guys put are just made to help out the Warriors, and sometimes just make the team worse off in cap and talent. Some of you guys just put in it the trade machine and be like OHHHH THAT WORKS! when nooooo it does not. I don’t know I just felt like saying it, sorry that it went on this one but its the most recent one.

So I don't have a signature well these words would do! Who knew that upgrades can have downgrades too!

My point...

I’m not usually one to post trade ideas, but my main point here was meant to show what bad shape we would be in if we were forced to trade Jackson. I wasn’t advocating trading the guy, just taking a look at what we could get for him if our hand was forced. In the end it wasn’t a pretty picture. I’m not sure if you actually read the post, or just used this as a space to vent (which is understandable). But since you did respond to my post I thought I’d clarify the point of the post because apparently you missed it.

what you meant i was just venting here cause it was the latest one. i was not dissing you man. i just knew more people would go to the new one and yours was it. i did read your post and i know it was not all on trades but it had one. I was gonna just make a fanpost but as you know these days everything is getting deleted and sometimes it won’t make sense why they did it. which right now is now me venting about something else lol. but yeah sorry for the misunderstanding.

I'm a long time.....

site reader, but dont post very often, OM, usully has insightful comments and posts. This isnt a grabage lets trade Al for Udonis Haslem for Sean May, or trading our trash for an All Star in David West. Jack does not look happy and wants an extension, and I think most of us agree, shouldnt happen. So this is a topic of concern. Obviosly, atleast I hope, Mulson are not visiting this site for advice on running the team, But this was a well written post about a current issue with the team that promotes friendly banter on the topic.
