Sources: Warriors' Ellis is out at least 3 months because of ankle injury
UGH! BAD. LUCK.
Was really anticipating this season too, but hopefully with his injury history he can recover quickly.
The Golden State Warriors won't have Baron Davis or Monta Ellis in their starting lineup on opening night.
In the latest blow during a difficult summer for Golden State, ESPN.com has learned that Ellis -- just awarded one of the biggest pay raises in league history -- will be sidelined at least three months, possibly four, after suffering a severe high ankle sprain in his hometown of Jackson, Miss.
Ellis was scheduled to undergo surgery on his left ankle in Alabama on Wednesday, according to team sources, after he informed the club late last week that he had injured himself working out. More specifics about how Ellis sustained the injury were not immediately available.
Rest of it in the link.

The Sky has fallen
We’re sunk. Where was he working out? Did he keep the injury a secret? Monta should be in Oakland, working out under the tutelage of Smart or someone. This sucks, big time as I was psyched to see young Monta respond to the challenge and dominate the league playing the point. Damn.

Well one can say
This was going to be an intresting year anyway. This was going to see how well Monta adapted to playing the 1 even though he is a pure 2. We know that he was talented with Baron here but he (Monta) wasn’t our almight savior. He had to show us this year if he could win the game in clutch time…. That was Baron & Jack last year so he had to prove himself worthy of the $11 Mil A Year Contract becasue everything else in his career went off Baron. We all hope that he would put up similar numbers like last year but nothing was ever etched and in stone. Now that we have Marcus, we can see what happens from there… And hopefully he will indeed do well but we are mistaking ourselves if we really thought we were going to be in the playoffs this year. Honestly we weren’t in the picture and this makes it a little easier to see how this year will go but we can hope that Marcus, AR, Hendrix, Belli, & Wright can deem themselves worthy of being on a roster or not. We should be able to tell something by the time Monta comes back about the rest of the team but when Monta comes back we have to see how he adapts to being the big star in the spotlight….

what a burn...
Assuming he misses November, that would be 17 games. On the bright side I feel like we do have a deeper team than last year. Im excited to see if Marcus Williams is going to step up. I think he can definately strive in the Nelly offense. Will this be a blessing in disguise? Oh well, I wish Monta and healthy and fast recovery. I’m somewhat in the same boat, besides the fact that I dont get paid to play basketball. I tore my ACL couple months ago and had surgery 4 weeks ago. Surgery is definately not going to be fun for the young gun.

Severe ankle sprains can suck but he should recover.
What’s the surgery for…?
Good luck everyone, Monta should be okay. It’s bad timing, but maybe the opening for Marcus Williams establishes him as your PG of the now and the future.
Better now, than during the playoff run, also. That’s what we Blazer fans told ourselves about Roy’s injury. Monta will be just fine, don’t worry!

So theres 2 plans of attack,
Option 1,
Trade Al for Kirk Hinrich and try and weasal a first rounder from them. Hinrich like Monta can play 1 or 2, and his known for his defense. I have been totally against in the past but with 8 being injured I would be all for it now.
Option 2,
Ride it out with Williams and Watson, playoffs are doubtful anyway, lets let the kids develop and get rid of Al and Jack in 2 years, draft another good prospect, sign a another solid player and become a legitment force in 2 years.
What do ya’ll think?
Ellis to the rim.

the curse of the new max(ish) contract
option 1: nah. let’s leave hinrich’s contract alone. plus, al doesn’t fill a pressing need for the bulls (they need a real center more than anything).
option 2: looks better. this is why mully acquired williams—steady, athletic, pure point insurance in the event of the unthinkable (or, the expected if you’re a long time warriors fan).

I don't mean to be a downer
But this board’s unbridled enthusiasm for Williams is rather alarming. He is NOT a pure point. His assist marks are mediocre. And steady is exactly what he is not. He is a poor shooter and a high turnover creator. He is also not a good defensive player, based on his two years in the league. His +/- is -6.6. That’s below a rotation player. His Roland Rating is -6.3, dito. A 11.00 PER. Going into this season he is a bad player. And the Nets decided to sign Keyon Dooling for a lot more money, whom the Magic gave up on, and trade Williams. They clearly have given up on Marcus.
He’s young, not 23 until December, a little younger than Monta and two years younger than Buike. So, yes he could be decent, maybe better. But that is based on speculation not on his NBA performance. People have to understand that.

I'd say he is a pure point guard and a decent shooter
He averaged 8.6 assists/game and 12.3 points/game in his final year @ UCONN and he shot over 40% for 3PT. So far that hasn’t translated into any success at the NBA level. Still, you have to assume he has that pure-point-guard, pass-first mentality and decent shooting ability to put up those kind of numbers, even in college. He does tend to go for the spectacular passes, which lead to more turnovers. I’m thinking Nellie will put the smack down on the showboat passes and get his assist/TO ratio under control…

They’re looking to deal Gordon in a sign and trade instead.
But, I think a trade could be in the offing. I’m not sure that Mully and Nellie are convinced that either Williams or Watson can step in for Monta.

True,
but Kirk Hinrich can technically play the 2, so Ellis and Hinrich can cmpose a backcourt of 2 guys capable of the 1. But looking back at it, I would go with option 2, Maggette and Jack and the rest of the guys, should keep the team competive.

I’d like to see what a Williams/Buike/Randolph/Wright/Biedrins lineup can do and add a top 5 in next years draft, but I think its far more likely we see a even more of established scorers like Maggs, Jack and Al to compensate for the loss of Monta.

At least until a certain point.
I think we’ll rely more on our vets in the beginning than the young guys also. In the hopes that we remain close until Monta comes back to give us a push.
In that likely scenario though, i see us winning anywhere between 36-43 wins. Which wouldn’t be a top-5 pick on a wasted season.

he’s not a starter on a good team, but I’d like to see him get the bulk of the minutes this year with the rest of the young guys just to get an idea of exactly what we have and to let them develop. Then the following year we can start figuring out who IS and IS NOT starter quality.

Update...
the latest from Kawakami…
* He hurt it Thursday, was checked out over the weekend and at some point in the following days was diagnosed with a high-sprain in his left ankle plus a torn deltoid ligament.
* Surgery to repair the ligament was performed today at James Andrews’ facilities in Birmingham, Ala.
* Ellis is expected to have his ankle immobilized for 6 weeks. If that goes well, he’ll follow that with 6 weeks of off-court (non-basketball) work.
If both of those go well, in 3 months, Ellis will begin on-court work–and obviously probably will be far from ready to go in games.
That puts the timetable for his recovery at more than 3 months, almost certainly, and I’d guess 4 months is the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM.

It's not that bad
We were going to be a fringe playoff team if anything, some of the young kids can log big minutes without Monta which is definately a positive. If by some great miracle we play .500 ball we can still be in the mix when Monta gets back. Don’t count on Kawakami, he’s a pretty negative guy and I’m sure there is a possiblity that Ellis is back in the 3 month time frame.

Kawakami
has more speciifc info than Mark Stein, who reported the national version. I think it’s more likely closer to four months.
Whatever the reality of the injury’s time table, the Warriors have a pretty good bead on it, at this point in time. If Monta misses two months, the Warrirors might be 10 games out of the playoffs, so you do wonder if they will change their game plan for the season based on that.

Is a beat reporter, right?
He’s just telling you what the team and the doctors and agents have told him. He isn’t interpreting it and then telling you, he’s just saying what he is told by those who know.
So it could be 3+ months, because that’s what the team thinks.
Maybe Monta heals faster than that, but since there was surgery you want to be very careful with him. Monta is still very young, very talented, and you don’t rush your best player back from an injury just to be “ok” as a team. Let him heal and think of his entire career past this season.
It’ll hopefully work out for the better in the long run.

Wouldnt it be funny
If it turned out Baron was responsible, slipping water on the floor at his training facility in a Tanya Harding sort of way, and there are photos emerge of Monta on the floor saying “Why me? Why…”. Barons motivation became the Warriors pretty much igniting motivation for Brand to start looking at other teams… and Baron resigned to hanging with Ricky Davis and the shell of Marcus Camby and Chris “My country and my father is disappointed in me” Kaman. Laughed about that one for a few minutes before I cried that Monta wont be playing till Dec…
Take this for account: The guy is young, and has always recovered quick. I think he will be back middle of Nov, it will be a Steven Jackson situaion being out the first 6 games. Monta is a beast, SHOULD be back quick. Silver lining? Anyone who sees the potential for the W’s to look at their depth to play some younger guys. Don’t think its going to be Livingston, he is going to want a guaranteed and not going to get it, but CJ, Marcus, and the round-peg-in-square-hole Belinelli filler will allow more playing time for Morrow, Jackson and Mags on the floor at the same time, and Randolph getting early PT this season. Lets be honest… IT WOULD BE WORSE IF THIS HAPPENED TO BENDRIS THINK ABOUT IT. We would be freaking out more, and you know it…
by pinkycheal on Aug 27, 2008 12:46 PM PDT 0 recs
Trust me you do not want to see Monta playing in the mid-november
because it would mean they rushed his recovery and he would be playing on painkillers while risking not only his career but his ankle on top of it. If we suck without him then so be it, let Monta recover fully and in 2009-2010 he may be playing with a top 5 pick by his side(not to mention the other lottery picks if we trade AL and/or Jackson).

So what about Livingston then...
I’ve been hoping that one of these days we hear of a Livingston signing. Although i like Watson I don’t think he has a long term future with the Dubs. A healthy Livingston however very well could be an integral part of our future. With Williams as the #2 backup, i thought it was well worth the risk to cut Watson and bring on Livingston. But that was yesterday…
Here’s the latest on Livingston’s recovery:
Livingston has been playing full contact, full court basketball in Chicago under the guidance of NBA trainer Tim Grover, and is said to be getting his explosiveness and swagger back. Supposedly Shaun is dunking the ball and attacking the basket against NBA guys in Chicago.
…he’s not back to a 100, but is closer to 75 to 80%.
…With NBA training camp set to open in less than 38 days it’s not out of the question Shaun gets a deal – the question is will that deal be guaranteed and will Shaun get a chance to play himself back into the NBA elite. Someone could get themselves a very nice player if they take the risk.
Unfortunately, I think with Monta’s injury the Dubs are going to have to keep Watson because they need a backup PG now and can’t wait on Livingston’s recovery.
But maybe I’m wrong… Maybe because of this injury we should pursue Livingston harder. Now there are actually going to be minutes to give him if he gets into playing shape before Ellis returns.

Wow...
This is horrible news. This was going to be the most important training camp of Monta’s career. He was about to have the keys handed to him and now this happens. We had no proven point guard on the team before this injury, all we had was the hope that Monta would impress us yet again with his ability to always seem to live up to our high expectations. Now we have Williams, who while being hyped up coming into the league has never proven that he can run a team and certainly wasn’t brought in to handle the full-time starting PG spot, and we have Watson, who while showing much promise for a D-League guard hasn’t even proven that he belongs in this league.
Am I hopeful that these guys will surprise us? Well yeah, I have to be. I’m a Warriors fan who hopped on the “band wagon” near the beginning of a 12 year playoff drought. I know how to enjoy watching a sub-.500 team and find the silver lining. But Monta was our future. He still is, but it looks like this might be one of those years that a player can never find his rhythm. We were already asking a lot of him to make the transition to PG but to come in a month or two into the season and take over at point while coming off an ankle injury… dang that’s really a lot to ask.
This may be a year that we get to see a lot of the youngsters. Not what Nellie had in mind for his final (maybe) season as a coach. I just hope that the boys put on a good show for 82 games because that is all we get to see of them this year.

Faaaaaark.
No good way to spin this… this is the one big injury we’re not equipped to handle. Williams hasn’t shown himself to be ready for extended play, Jack probably can’t handle the point, and Watson’s just a guy.
But even that’s not the real issue — Monta missing a quarter of the season sucks, but this season wasn’t a sure thing anyway. Like others, I find the biggest downer of this to be that Monta doesn’t get training camp to work into the position.
I think our best lineup, given the current roster, is Jack/Buike/Maggette/Al/Biedrins. That looks to be a fairly stagnant offense, but it’s a lineup with size and speed, and everybody at least contributes something offensively, if they can get anything going in the half-court. But that’s not a strong lineup — less than the sum of its parts, given the absence of a playmaker (not that Monta’s even a proven one). That lineup will definitely lose some games.
I kind of hope the Dubs don’t make a move of any size based on this… signing a cheap guy is fine, anything more than that is an overreaction. Guys like Buike and Randolph will probably stumble into some bigger minutes as a result of this, and that’s not a bad thing. But it will, in Monta’s absence, be a fairly bad team.
by onlxn on Aug 27, 2008 1:38 PM PDT 0 recs
Making a move...
As I read it you mean making a move for a point guard to replace Monta right? While I’m sure this is an overreaction too, what about embracing the youth movement and trading Al and Jack for prospects/Draftpicks?
I agree completely with your analysis, but I can’t help but wonder if this was a not-so-gentle nudge to commit to the youth, lose a ton of games, and get a nice draft pick.
Still too early, I don’t know what to think.

Right, I was talking about a PG-centric move in reaction to this. I’m not against trading Al and Jack in the right scenario… heck, I wasn’t against trading them even before this injury. But there are a couple of issues. First one’s that Al didn’t seem to intrigue many people this summer when Mully introduced him into trade talks with Detroit and others. The longer we keep Al, the more valuable he becomes — he should be a genuinely useful trading chip next summer. I don’t want them to jump the gun for the sake of it.
Jack’s also a hard guy to move for value. He’s an odd package of pluses and minuses — versatility mixed with inconsistency, great leadership mixed with front-office headaches. I think he’s worth a lot more to us than to almost any other team. We need his versatility, both to help our young PGs handle the playmaking on offense and to hold together our defense. Add in that his value will have dipped again with his recent contract complaints, and you have a guy who wouldn’t bring back nearly as much as he gives us.
I’d love to trade either for guys that added to our young core, but both are somewhat warty guys… that’s how we managed to land them for Dunmurphy in the first place. I don’t think we’d get back value for either right now unless we packaged them with young ‘uns like Wright or Randolph. And with all the big RFAs now re-signed (not that trades were likely to be feasible with them anyway), I’m not sure how we’d make the “Young Guy + Old Guy = Better Young Guy” equation work right now.

Finish the season? I wonder if we get off to a horrible start without Monta if Nellie quits on the team at some point, I wouldnt be too shocked if that happens. I hope Monta doesnt turn into Grant Hill now, thats the worse thing about this injury, this could potentially completely alter Monta’s career, I pray he comes back at full strength and still has his amazing quickness and amazing cuts back, but that might not happen and thats scary. Screw the 3 months, take 5 months and make sure Monta is completely at 100 percent before hes on the court, were not contending for a championship this year, maybe we pull a Spurs ala Robinson being hurt then getting Duncan, and just tank this year with Monta and luck out and get a superstar in the draft next year. But with our luck we will get a Dunleavey again with a top 3 pick or Joe Smith with the first pick.

Very Good Post
We just signed this guy to a $66 million long term contract as the (for now) cornerstone of this team. The idea of rushing his comeback is absurd. As it was, the Warriors were primed for a near playoff run. My educated guess had the playoff over/under win line at 46. The pre-Monta Warriors were at something like 43 wins. And they were bascially competing with 4 other teams – Blazers, Mavericks, Nuggets and Suns – for 3 playoff spots. So, while being competitive, the pre-Monta injury Warriors weren’t likely making the playoffs.
Now, they almost for sure aren’t making the playoffs. Time to think more about long term moves, first of which is protecting and developing Monta’s game for the future.

Understanding Monta's injury
http://www.arthroscopy.com/sp09005.htm
"A Grade III (Third Degree) sprain is the most severe. This indicates that the ligament has been significantly damaged, and that instability has resulted. A grade III injury means that the ligament has been torn.
The lateral ligaments are the most commonly injured. On the lateral side, the ligaments are typically damaged in a direction that goes from the front to the back, with the most severe injury being in the front (anterior) and the least severe being in the back (posterior). Therefore, the most commonly damaged ligament is the anterior talo-fibular ligament and the least commonly damaged is the posterior talofibular ligament.
The sprain occurs when the ankle is turned unexpectedly in any direction that is further than he ligaments are able to tolerate. Typically, the sprain occurs with running, jumping, sharp direction changes, or stepping on uneven ground. The risk factors for having an ankle sprain include, uneven ground, previous untreated ankle injuries, being overweight, or using poorly fitting or worn out shoes."
ESPN describes him as having a deltroid tear in his ankle, which means he’s torn one of medial ligaments or the ones the control the foot push to the side. Therefore, I think is over all speed will be fine, same with his lift, but… I pray that his lateral movement and quick feet on defense aren’t held back by his injury. From what I’ve been able to research this type of injury should allow for a full recover. Here’s hoping Dr. Andrews can work his voodoo on Monta and get him back on the court by mid-January or early February.

Boy, this is a drastic way to get out of playing point guard :>) The good thing is he’ll have 3 more months of downtime to spend those millions. BTW, He didn’t by chance recently buy a motorcycle did he ?

Hum....
Pree good work again. Man I got ripped for posting that Warriors should bring Livingston in. If he’s even 80% percent I think we should seriously consider dropping Morrow and letting Livingston, Watson and Williams fight it out for the PG minutes.
