Monta out 3 Months

Monta's going to be in street clothes for awhile.
Just reported on ESPN.com that Monta Ellis is going to be out at least 3 months!
In the latest blow during a difficult summer for Golden State, ESPN.com has learned that Ellis -- just awarded one of the biggest pay raises in league history -- will be sidelined at least three months, possibly four, after suffering a severe high ankle sprain in his hometown of Jackson, Miss.
Uh oh...
This was supposed to be the duldroms of the offseason, nothing going on. All the free agency and trades seemed to finish in July. Then BAM, out of nowhere comes this story.
So what does this all mean?
Monta won't be back until at least the start of December meaning he misses the first month of the season and training camp. If he misses more than that, we may not seem him back on the court until January 2009. And we may not see him fully healthy until next season. With that beginning schedule loaded with road games and without our #1 scoring option for up to a 1/3 of the season, you can kiss the playoffs goodbye. Hanging around .500 without Monta? I'll pray, but it's doubtful.
I'm not sure where the Warriors go from here. Without making any moves, it means that Marcus Williams, Kelenna Azubuike, CJ Watson, and Marco Belinelli get a chance to prove that they belong in the rotation. I'm sure Nellie will give each of them ample opportunities to show what they can do. Corey Maggette and Stephen Jackson should get a slight bump in minutes as well - not good for the wear and tear over the course of a season.
Someone's going to have to step up, whether it's one of those bench guys, Maggs and/or Jax, or Mullin with a trade.
Geez, what if we see Nellie go big? Jax at 1, Maggs at 2, Al at 3, BWright at 4, Biedrins at 5. Okay not likely, but what if?
Thanks to bojangles408 for posting this so quickly. I hid the fanpost to keep this on the main page and not have duplicate stories. Check out his original fan post after the jump.
EDIT: Geez I didn't even see dong4ce's post already rec'd to the top of the recommended fanposts, see Sources: Warriors' Ellis is out at least 3 months because of ankle injury. Lots of good comments over there. Thanks for posting that dong4ce! Uh interesting screen name.
WORST DAY OF OUR LIVES: MONTA INJURED
What we've never wanted to happen has now just happened and will possibly ruin our whole season. It looks like we need to start thinking long and hard about our new guys...
Monta has a serious ankle injury and it doesn't look good. Out for at least 3 months.

Is the season over? Can Williams be our guy? Watson?
Now is the time for our rookies to show their stuff...

hang on...
a slightly conflicting report on warriors.com…
it says that yes, monta had a grade 3 high ankle sprain, but is out 3 months after a surgery to repair the ligament. while he is still out 3 months, i consider this a slightly better scenario, because he has already done the surgery.

by the way. can we PLEASE change that picture?!?! brings back bad memories and suggests monta is paralyzed (again)!!

Recovery Time
It’s two six week stages. Six weeks of imobilization, six weeks of therapy. After 12 weeks, he can start his on court conditioning. But he’s going to be out of shape and will have to practice the PG plays. So, it will likely be a few weeks from there. Probably closer to four months, which would mean missing about 1/3 of the season.
I’m sure that this is what Mullin and company are weighing right now. If Monta misses a third of the season, do the Warriors re-vamp their season game plan? Trade Jackson and/or Harrington?

Repost from the other thread
Wow…
This is horrible news. This was going to be the most important training camp of Monta’s career. He was about to have the keys handed to him and now this happens. We had no proven point guard on the team before this injury, all we had was the hope that Monta would impress us yet again with his ability to always seem to live up to our high expectations. Now we have Williams, who while being hyped up coming into the league has never proven that he can run a team and certainly wasn’t brought in to handle the full-time starting PG spot, and we have Watson, who while showing much promise for a D-League guard hasn’t even proven that he belongs in this league.
Am I hopeful that these guys will surprise us? Well yeah, I have to be. I’m a Warriors fan who hopped on the “band wagon” near the beginning of a 12 year playoff drought. I know how to enjoy watching a sub-.500 team and find the silver lining. But Monta was our future. He still is, but it looks like this might be one of those years that a player can never find his rhythm. We were already asking a lot of him to make the transition to PG but to come in a month or two into the season and take over at point while coming off an ankle injury… dang that’s really a lot to ask.
This may be a year that we get to see a lot of the youngsters. Not what Nellie had in mind for his final (maybe) season as a coach. I just hope that the boys put on a good show for 82 games because that is all we get to see of them this year.

It is safe to say...
that we will miss the playoffs. We’re not as good as were last year, and Stephen Jackson missed only the first 7 games last year. Monta out for at least 3 months, you do the math.
by Golden Boy on Aug 27, 2008 1:33 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Emotional reaction...
I’m sure this is an over reaction, but I can’t help but think that it might be in our long-term best interest now to see what we could get for Jackson and Al. I’ve recently said that it would be a bad move to trade Jack but with this news it might be time to embrace a youth movement.
If we could get some prospects and/or draft picks and some salary relief (although two years remaining isn’t bad at all) I might make that trade now. We weren’t a title contender by a long shot and now we aren’t even a playoff contender (barring a miracle) so would it be so bad to roll the dice and see if we can find someone who could be a real difference maker in the future. We already have some promising young guys. If we can add a few more you would think that at least one maybe two of them could be future all stars.
Ahhh, I don’t know… I want Monta back.

Half way excited
Maybe we would have made the playoff, or maybe not. But this forces Nellie to give Marco and Marcus significant PT, which they need, to prove their need to this team. However I wish it had happened to TMNT cause then it would force Nellie to play Wright and AR, who are the future of this team.

Livingston?
We’re working him out on Thursday…
A possibility for the Warriors could be Shaun Livingston, who Mullin said the Warriors will watch work out on Thursday. Livingston has recovered from his devastating leg injuries and is fully participating in basketball activities at Tim Grover’s facility in Chicago. Livingston is said to be looking for a guaranteed deal which the Warriors could theoretically give him if they waive either Watson or Summer League shooting sensation Anthony Morrow.
Obviously not the immediate answer, probably can’t even play immediately, but if Monta’s injury pushes Mullin & Co to make an offer, this could be a good thing in the long run. Many of us have been drooling over a (healthy) Linvingston/Ellis backcourt for a while now. Could be a force to be reckoned with in ‘09/’10.
Latest on Livingston…

This was already a rebuilding year
We were already rebuilding, so ow Marcus Williams gets to step up into his role and prove why Mullin traded for him. Someone should tell Maggette that it is time to earn that big $10 mil per year contract we just signed him to. It is still bad new because I love wantching Monta, but at least we can see what the rest of the team can do and ge t asmall preview of the future.

jeez, don't panic
“With that beginning schedule loaded with road games and without our #1 scoring option for up to a 1/3 of the season, you can kiss the playoffs goodbye.”
Now is NOT the time to panic and declare the playoffs are out of reach, nor is it time to have a fire-sale of veteran players.
It IS the time to appreciate the Maggette signing, to appreciate the Nets deal bringing another PG in to add to Watson. It IS a time to appreciate the KAz re-signing. For those who pine for more opportunity for Marco, well if he doesn’t get time now he never will. As for Jax and Maggs they’re going to lead the way. On the road, experience and poise count more than emotion – Al, Jax, Maggs are going to be the poise. Maggs will help keep us in games attacking the basket and getting to the line. KAz’s role grows, and we need one more bench guy to step up (Wright?). Then Monta returns and it will be like the biggest mid-season pickup ever for the roster, fueling the playoff drive.
Though I’m not usually the optimist on this site, just had to balance the scales a bit. Stay away from bridges if you’re that worked up about a month off for Monta.

Why make a push to trade
First, who would want to pick up Maggette and Harrington who each have a $10 mil per year contract? If people wanted Maggette at $10 a year, they would have offered it to him in the offeseason. I dont think that we can move those 2 guys for a big name player.
Second, why make a big push right away to get a temporary replacement for Monta that will go back to the bench once Monta returns? We have more swingmen than any other team, so moving players around wont be a problem. We know Maggette isnt shy about putting the ball in the hoop and will probably pu tup big numbers since he no longer has coach Dunleavy holding his minutes back.
Finally, we just picked up a PG in Marcus Williams. Not a superstar, but not a bad option to have running the point until Monta returns. Monta hadnt exactly shown that the PG was his role yet, so its only temporary until his return.

its not the end of the world! if you look at the team this year compared to last, we have more scorers than people to ride the bench. im pretty sure they’ll be ok if he’s projected to miss that much time.
and you’ll never know with these injuries. he may come back sooner since he’s still young. and we all know what happened with the dirk injury, he came back way sooner than expected

Well Monta does have
a history of healing fast, and he is young so I think that the three months is probably accurate. He may even only take 4-5 weeks to get through what is expected to be two 6 week rehabilitations. I think he returns for the Blazers game, or if we’re lucky he may be back to face the Clipps as a backup. Monta off the bench at 80% is like a Ginobili like 6th man.

Good News for Marcus Williams
is we play Tor, NJ, Mem Twice, Sac, Minn in that three week span. We also play N.O., Por Den, and Det, also that first Clipps match up. I already got tix to opening night, so I was looking forward to Monta vs CP3. But now I’m looking forward to Andris vs. Chandler, and hoping that our new depth will shut down D.West.
This could possibly be a good thing for the rest of the team. They all know this is Monta’s team and this will give them a chance to build chemistry together without the safety blanket of their best player. We still have plenty of scoring, and their will be more minutes for M.Williams and Azubuike, probably for Belli, Watson, and Randolph as well. M.Williams is a pass first pg who drives well and shoots well, I’m glad we have a solid backup. We are going to need AL to be strong in the post on O and D, especially if he is starting. I’d like to see him come off the bench as a counter to Posey and if Wright is ready , he would be a better fit for the team on D and Rebounding. His length against Chandlers and Biedrins’ strength and quickness against West poses an interesting match up down low. Turiaf would also be a tough match up for West, but we don’t have a backup center, but you never know with Nellie. I was excited for this game to begin with, then I read the Monta news, and I was tempted to sell my tix, but now I’m even more excited to see our new talent and depth log minutes against an elite NBA squad. Plus Monta will be well rested by the end of the season. If our talent and depth is what we hope it to be, this may not matter a whole lot in the scheme of things. Go to opening night and cheer on those new Dubz, the Oracle can elevate games!

I am optimistic.
I think this is actually one of the best things that could have happened for the warriors. It gives us a chance to establish the new players we’ve gotten, as well as establish the roles of the logjam we have at the 1 and 2. Why are we forgetting that we have totally capable players at the 1 and 2 to help stop the bleeding? Marcus Williams is going to have a legitimate chance to prove his worth. We’ve already seen Kelenna play. When given the opportunity, he more than filled the shoes that J-Rich left behind. That’s fact. After Monta took his job (deservedly), his game slipped.
Relax, guys. We should be able to stop from bleeding too much. Monta gets back a month into the season (if its 3 months, and not 4.) And we’ll be off to the races.

Maybe now Nelson might go deeper into his bench...
This sucks but at least some of the bench warmers might get a chance to get some real burn. We all know Nelly likes to ride his thoroughbreads – like he was REALLY gonna take advantage of his “newfound” depth. With his need to win now, he wasn’t gonna dip into that bench of unproven talents unless he REALLY needed to. I guess now, he needs to.
I sincerely think that had buki not lit things up the first week that the dubs were w/o Cap’n Jack last year, he would not have gotten as much playing time the rest of the year as he did. Same with the ‘07 Matt Barnes. I bet he doesn’t even see playoff action if it wasn’t for BD’s & JRich’s injuries that year. This injury gives an extended opportunity for an unproven commodity to show his worth(or show that he’s a bust). If a guy shows that he could be productive in real NBA games, he might just earn a regular spot in Nelly’s short list.
The Warrior aren’t going to make the playoffs, but at least it will force nelly to not be so shortsighted that good, young players don’t waste another year wallowing at the end of the bench. Some of those guys could turn into some real trade bait this year.
And who knows, we might have a real shot at Lebron in 2010, because of what transpires this year.

not necessarily, yes absolutely, jury's out, not a snowball's chance in hell
unfortunately I’m worried that Nelson would react just the opposite – he has one fewer player he has confidence in and my actually shorten the rotation even without Monta … KAz did indeed take advantage … jury’s out on the playoffs – last year is not predictive of this year, there’s no real reason to think the West will be that insanely good across the board two years in a row … not even going to comment about LJ coming to oaktown

How about AR at the 1?
Jax at 2, Maggs at 3, AL at 4, Beans at 5

AR’s ball handling are better than most bigs he’d usually be matched up with, but imo a good defensive big guard would embarrass him in the full court
my best guess is more point forward from Jackson and pray he (a) doesn’t get hurt and (b) doesn’t decide this is his big chance to hold out for more $

why
cant monta be injured this season and not the next? Rubio is not coming out till ’10-11!!! There is no way anyone can spin this into anything positive. The Ws are flirting with a 12 win season…..

Oh come on!
Warriors are still better than most of the East, still better than OKC, Timberwolves, etc., even without #8. They’ll win more than 30 games. Probably no playoffs but expects some good, surprising wins over quality teams as well.

Livingston news?
I know they had him play for them yesterday. Has anyone (Pree) heard any news on how the tryout has gone and if they think he is worth signing?

Monta's injury sucks, I hate injuries they mess up all your plans
At least that lady behind him in the photo has nice boobs. I like boobs.
I alway try to look for the bright side if things.
The first day I ever met him he said: "Hi, I'm Ritchie White. I'm on probation."
