Why not Marbury....
Its been brought up here a few times, trying to aquire Stephan Marbury, but was meet with a negative reaction. In light of the injury to Monta Ellis, I wanted to revisit the subject.
First off, a trade of Al Harington, Stephan Jackson, and Kosta Perovic for Marbury straight up works. Marbury makes 20 million for this upcoming season so we would still be under the luxary tax if we made the deal.
The Knicks would be intrested in this trade because NY is done with Marbury, and since Jack, Al, and Kosta, all come off the books in 2 years they would still have their salary cap room for Lebron. D'antoni would definetly make use of both Jack and Al. We could probaly weasel a draft pick from them as well.
Marbury is a talented player, theyres no doubting that. If he has his head right he can definetly be a very good player in the NBA, and with Nellie as his coach he might be able to be a nice replacement for Baron. He's only 31 years old and has an expiring contract. When Monta comes back he will be able to stay at the 2 and pick up the point slowly. Again the guy is only 31, if it doesnt work we let him walk at the end of the year and we would have cap space again next off season. If he works out maybe Mulson can convince him to be a veteran mentor for us and maybe he accepts a multi year deal in the 4 to 7 million range.
pg Marbury, Williams, Watson
sg Azuibuike, Bellineli, Marrow
sf Maggete, Randolph
pf Wright, Hendrix
c Biedrins, Turiaf
Loosing Harrington severly weakens our front court. If Biedrins would get injured we would really be screwed.
Mullin probaly wont do this seeing as he is really into Marcus Williams at the moment, and said he wont make any knee jerk moves. Plus I would think the club would want to hang on to Captain Jack, I think this whole contract thing was blown out of proportion.
What do you guys think?

Lookin at it now,
we are giving up quite a bit for an over the hill head case, but I would still think about it. Why not go full youth movement this year and try and pick up a decent big man in the comingup off season, if BWright doesnt pan out. Maggette(and Marbury ofcourse) would be the only guy over 25 on the roster. This year is no playoffs, or one and done if lucky, lets focus on next year and the year after that.

Because the lineup you flashed up there would vie with the Gizzles and Thunder (aka OKC) for the worst record in basketball.

with al and jack,
We’re not doing anything anyway. Why not ‘tank’ and let youngsters play, see who develops, and get a good draft pick and pick up another solid player in the offseason. Being the 9th or 10th seed is worse than being last in the conference.

Like I said,
the goal isnt that Starbury shows up and takes us to the promise land. Its that we get a guy who can play point guard at he nba level. Something Williams or Watson or even Ellis has shown that they can do. We get a better draf pick have a bunch of salary room again next offseason and build our team for 2 years from now.

Your insane
I wouldn’t trade jackson for marbury str8 up. R u kidding me??? Harrington and Jackson are huge parts of the offense (especially with Monta out) and you want to get rid of them for an over the hill, head case. Hell no. Give me Jackson at point over Marbury any day.
Now if we could rid ourselves of harrington and kosta for Marbury, that would be a deal to consider. Otherwise… keep our team the way it is.

who cares if we’re worse. good, let’s be worse then. Get a better draft pick, have a huge expiring contract..the bottom line is that it isn’t wise to give jackson the extension he’s looking for, and since it’s gonna piss him off when he doesn’t get it..well there’s your team killer right there.

Boo, Captain Jack for Starbury!

Well...
The thing you have to ask is are we going to be happy with mediocre this year. Even with Monta out for a while we won’t be the worst team in the west. We will probably finish two or three spots out of the playoffs maybe worse, maybe better depending on injuries and the development of our players.
With Jack and Al nearing the end of their contracts and probably nearing the end of their ride with this team is it so bad to take the bad lumps this season and maybe get a high draft pick? Let’s face it, this trade wouldn’t be about Marbury, it would be about trading away our vets and tanking. This would give our young guys more minutes get us a higher draft pick and probably make us painful to watch in the process.
Is it worth it? To me as a fan who enjoys entertaining basketball, probably not. But if I was running the team I would never be afraid of being really bad for a year or two to stock up on youth and take a chance at lucking into a franchise player. The thing you want to avoid is just barely missing the playoffs every year and never really getting much better or much worse. We’ve seen plenty of that around here in the last decade.
In the end I probably stick with what we have for this year and hope for the best (after all Jack and Al will be expiring contracts next year). But to be fair this trade isn’t as ridiculous as everyone is making it out to be. This is just about long-term strategy, rebuilding vs retooling vs rebuilding next year or the year after. Like I said, I’d rather just watch the guys we have now and see if an opportunity arises next year, but would it really be so bad if we handed the team over to the young guys now? I don’t know…

thanks olympic mike,
you said what i was trying to say. Im not saying i would do it or wouldnt do the deal, but we are looking at probaly missing the playoffs this year. Why not free up some cap room and let our young guys play. We could get a great pick and have serious cap space in the offseason again. Does that outweigh being really bad for a year, I dont know.
Plus who know’s what Marbury has in the tank. Maybe a healthy motivated Marbury brings his A game and the team is just as good as it would have been with Jack and Al.

“Plus who know’s what Marbury has in the tank. Maybe a healthy motivated Marbury brings his A game and the team is just as good as it would have been with Jack and Al.”
That isn’t olympicmike’s point. If you dump the heart and soul of the team (Jackson) as well as 3 PT gunning big man in (Harrington), then you’re basically teaming Don Nelson that this team is full fledge rebuilding mood. Therefore, you’d be banking on the fact that Marburry doesn’t find his “A game” and plays like he has the past 3 seasons.
Here is what John Hollinger has to say on Marburry:
SEASON FG% FT% P/40 R/40 A/40 TS% Ast TO Usg Reb PER
2002-03 .439 .803 22.3 3.2 8.1 52.0 24.7 9.9 27.2 4.6 20.12
2003-04 .431 .817 20.1 3.2 8.8 51.9 28.2 9.8 26.0 4.6 20.41
2004-05 .462 .834 21.7 3.0 8.1 57.5 27.3 9.5 24.6 4.4 21.97
2005-06 .451 .755 17.9 3.2 7.0 53.2 26.2 10.8 21.9 4.9 16.52
2006-07 .415 .769 17.6 3.1 5.9 53.9 23.7 10.5 21.1 4.6 15.36
2007-08 .419 .716 16.5 2.9 5.6 52.7 23.7 10.1 20.1 4.2 13.84
2006-07 season: Marbury got off to a horrendous start, averaging just 10.1 points per game in November and shooting under 40 percent from the floor the first two months, but he started looking like the Starbury of old down the stretch. Marbury averaged 21.7 points per game after the All-Star break and hit 37.6 percent of his 3-pointers to help his numbers recover.
For the year, Marbury had a fairly efficient campaign. Although he shot only 41.5 percent from the floor, he ranked 15th among point guards in true shooting percentage because he had the ninth-best rate of free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt among point guards, and because he hit a career-best 35.7 percent of his 3s. Marbury also ranked in the top third at his position in usage rate and turnover ratio.
He did not pass very often. Marbury’s assist ratio was nearly the lowest of his career and ranked only 50th among point guards. One reason: The Knicks played an inside-out offense and Marbury can’t throw an entry pass to save his life.
The other interesting note to his season is that the long 2-pointers evaporated from his game. Marbury had taken 27.3 percent of his shots from that distance a season earlier, but last season it was just 14.5 percent. Not that we can blame him, as he had the worst shooting percentage on non layup 2-pointers of any player with more than 200 attempts. Instead, he took more 3-pointers and more shots in the immediate basket area — a good idea on both counts, and one that helped improve his TS%.
Scouting report: Marbury isn’t as explosive as he was in his prime, but he still is one of the strongest drivers in the league when going to his right. His ability to go to the rim is a great weapon at the end of the shot clock, although sometimes he overdoes it looking for his offense instead of the dish.
Marbury has improved his catch-and-shoot game the past couple seasons, partly out of necessity it seems, and his high-arcing 3-point shot has to be respected. Opponents still prefer to let him shoot from outside rather than go to the rim, however.
Defensively, Marbury has the strength to handle matching up against shooting guards in a small backcourt, something he was asked to do frequently last season. He does a reasonable job staying in front of point guards too. However, his intensity comes and goes and his help defense is nonexistent.
2007-08 outlook: Last season’s strong finish was an encouraging sign, but the big picture probably hasn’t changed much. Marbury is a 30-year-old who has been dependent on his now-declining quickness, and thus is turning a new corner in his career. Like his backcourt mate from last season, Steve Francis, he has to accept that he’s no longer the go-to guy and adjust to being his team’s third or fourth option.
That’s going to entail a lot less dribbling and a lot more spot-up shooting; he also might be asked to guard somebody once in a while. His improved long-range shooting last season is a good sign in that regard, but we’ll see how he handles a further reduction in shots now that the Knicks have another post scorer to feed.
Most similar at age: David Wesley
And you want this guy on the Warriors? Like I said above, only if you’re tanking to get a top 3 pick.

right that why i said
plus, as being an additional point. The goal of the trade would be to give our young players the oppuruntiy to play and having some major salary room. I just was bringing up the point that Marbury used to be a really good player and still might be decent.
I dont like the phrase tanking, i we keep the team the way it is, whats the big picture. Highly unlikely we get into the playoffs, and we are waiting 2 years for Al and Jack to get off the books, Why dont we fast forward the process and bring in a servicable pg a the same time. Again, Im not saying im all for it or agaisnt but I think it would be a decent route to take.

if marbury is getting 20 million, im not even willing to pay 2 million for him, and he sucks
but with his salary i dont even think we have the cap space, it would have been cheaper to get Josh Smith or Iggy

toying with the idea
is fine -
sure, if he’s bought out of NY and we get him on the cheap and Nelson’s game
or, if Nelson’s leaving anyway and we’re dumping salary
but I just don’t see Nelson tanking this season when he’s so close to the record, and he’ll look at maybe needing two years to get there, which coincides with Jax & Al
course we all thought 08-09 would be the final year for Nelson and Baron together so nothing’s set in stone, still, if Nelson’s staying i don’t see us tanking or dumping vet salaries.

well
think back to the JRich trade – I don’t agree with everything Mully does (!) but he’s at least got the cajones to make unpopular deals, and take risks (Baron was not a sure bet, the Indy trade, etc.).
there’s a decent argument to be made to go young and build for the future, which I embraced pre-Maggette signing and could have included salary dumps along the way (which I didn’t suggest at all), but after the Maggette transaction it’s clear Mullin doesn’t want to completely bottom out to rebuild. Is that out of a desire to stay within striking distance of playoffs? to keep the fans interested? and/or to give his mentor and friend a chance at a hallowed record? All the above with a heavy % on the last would be my guess. He does owe Nelson some for riding in and saving his bacon two summers ago …
there’s virtually no way Nelson moves Jax after having lost Baron, Monta’s injury, and not being impressed with CJ enough to play him more last year. Ya, we added the Nets’ castoff third-string PG and may be scouting another castoff (& still injured) one in Livingston, but Jax is the only proven option Nelson has right now. Exchanging him for Marbury wouldn’t be a more comfortable fit at PG imo. In the full ct it could be CJ, or Williams, but when the team has to set up in the half court Jax will have the ball to initiate …

This speculation sucks
People on this site were saying that we were gonna be possibly a 5 or 6, at least in contention for a playoof seed. Now we lose for likely the first month of the season and everybody wants to tank it. We have a talented young big man and a talented young guard. Also(hopefully) a talented young bench. So before we even see this team in training camp we’re going to discuss trading one of our best players and another very important piece to our team given the veteran aspect and 3 point shooting. This is ridiculous WE BELIEVE alright.
Marbury, seriously? The fool was good for maybe 2-3 years, but you’re saying trade Cap’n Jack, AL, and Perovic for that guy. I might aquire him for a draft pick, maybe, or maybe just for Perovic and Watson. But giving up 2 of your starting 5. For a guy in a position that we may not even need, thats straight dumb. Everybody has already trashed this trade, but its hard to hold yourself back. Its like trading your hands for cancer. BAD IDEA
by droppin gsw _knowledge south bay style on Aug 29, 2008 5:04 PM PDT 0 recs
WE BELIEVE????
Seriously, this team has so much potential. I know being a Warriros fan and having so many years of dealing with “potential” and having it not work out is frustrating, but give em a chance. Mully and Nellie seem pretty stoked on all these fools, and if its cool for those two, its cool with me. Honestly, losing Monta at this stage of the season with this squad is better than if we would’ve lost Baron for a month maybe two last season. Baron is, as far as I know and seen, a better pg and at this point a better player than Monta. But our TEAM is so much better this year, give em a chance
I believe, do you??
by droppin gsw _knowledge south bay style on Aug 29, 2008 5:09 PM PDT 0 recs
This trade isn't all bad
If somehow you wouldn’t lose Jackson, this could maybe REALLY help in the longterm.
Without knowing your cap situation, I’d imagine you’re right at the lux tax level, just below it. A contract expiring the size of Marbury’s would get ya cap space after this summer again, and hopefully add a good player. You’ve been trying to trade Harrington for forever; cap space isn’t a bad trade off.
Plus, this team isn’t likely to make the playoffs, especially with Monta now out. My opinion, it is much better to be a bad, even horrible team with a PLAN than to be a mediocre team just coasting along. What’s the point of, year in year out, hoping to be an 8th seed?
Getting worse sucks in the short term, but puts you in a great position to really add an impact player in the draft. It’s how my Blazers got on their path to being good again, and now that hopefully Mullin has learned from his mistakes the Dubs can do it as well.
I don’t expect this to happen, and I am not a fan of Marbury. But I am fairly positive you’re not going to win much with Harrington and Kosta, and if you make a move that puts you in a position to become good in the near future, I’d do it.
No point in being mediocre. Ya need flexibility that an expiring deal gives ya, and a great draft pick. You want your guys to play hard in the meantime and hopefully surprise ya, but in the long term you need some more draft picks to build around Monta, Randolph, and Wright.
Plus, those guys are for the future, not the now. It’s not a bad idea to sacrifice the “now” to give those three a lot better team in the future.

I would rather stay put...
and give the young guns more minutes to play and see what they are capable of doing. I think this is a good time for Nellie to find the right combination. Also, the camaraderie among the existing players is very good. I don’t think Marbury’s attitude will be good for the players. You put one bad apple and who knows what can happen. I for one think that this Warriors team will be better than last. The acquisitions outweighs the losses. We have to give the young players the chance to showcase their capabilities. Since the majority (Nelson included) are not expecting the team to be in the playoffs, what do we have to loose… NONE! There is only something to gain. We will surely know which ones are talented and which ones are bust.

Why not trade Harrington and Jackson and whatever else you wanna give up

i wouldn't be opposed to picking up starbury
and neither should warriors fans (see: Baron Davis). the problem is your asking price…we should be able to fleece the knicks because they’re desperate to forget about him and put a new face on the franchise (see: Baron Davis). The difference, of course, is that he’s on the wrong side of 30. gotta think about the future for this team. the delusional folks that had us pegged for even competing for a playoff spot now face reality—we are a well below average team without an all-star player to hang our hat on, in a league driven by stardom. unless mullin finds another nitwit trade partner (see: indiana pacers) it’s going to be lean years ahead. but hey, at least tickets might be cheaper…right…?
