IS THE NBA REAL?

was just reading about tim donaghy this morning and all this hoopla about him had me thinking: "is the nba was still real?" Three things come to mind that we all should have realized this was happening before tim donaghy even said a word about all these refs fixing games.

1. Rasheed and Mark Cuban paid millions of dollars in fines trying to open our eyes. They knew all along this was happening and nobody listened. Rasheed was quoted to saying that "the NBA is as fake as the WWE." he paid a hefty fine for that. When the Mavs lost to the Heat in the finals, Cuban got fined for complaining way too much because you couldn't even look at Wade without getting called for a foul.

2. Stan Van Gundy Paid A LOT for going public and saying he got a tip that the refs were going to call fouls on Yao on purpose just to keep him in foul trouble and on the bench in a Playoff game.

3. How come small market teams never win it all? Its always the big market teams that end up with the chip at the end of the season.

While I do think they're some...

shady crap going on, and I think Stern is just trying to cover everything up….

Spurs?

It's hard to say...

especially number 3. The teams in big cities generally get more packed houses in their stadiums (if the team is successful). The more money they get, the better players they can get, leading to more success.

This is not to say I think the NBA is completely real, especially after the whole Donaghy fiasco. Maybe Stern’s hiding something from the fans that really deserves to be out in the open. Until they decide to tell us about their “shady” dealings (if any), we rely on these conspiracies of how players, coaches, and owners alike have to pay millions when they complain.

This is false.

This isn;t about small market vs. large market.

It is about whot he NBA decides to market adn therefore give preferential treatment. Ever notice how KOBE and his ilk always seem to get the calls? The NBA does tend to dictate the temas it wants at the top. This is fact and very suspisious officiating goes along with it. Mr. Stern time to come clean and clean up your sport.

It is more about who rather than where.
At least in the case of someone like LeBron.

The 2002 WC Finals should have been the Kings series and that is a blight on the NBA. Just before the minute three mark in video two there are two loose ball plays, Webber gets manhandled out of bounds, by Shaq I tihnk, but saves the play for a Turkoglu shot where Shaq has position above Divac and Divac gets a behind the back foul. Where was that the play right before?
At minute five Kobe, I think, just barrels into Pollard when the Kings have possession and gets an offensive foul call. Moving screen I guess, but Pollard wasn’t even playing against or even remotely setting a screen against anyone. And the play right after, is that Bill Walton, “That’s not a foul.” And Divac’s final foul call was painfully removed from the contact on Kobe, I presume it was. And Kobe plainly leveled Bibby on the in-bounds after the Kings went back up by one.
Ugh. Free throws 7/9; 19/24.
This is just absurd.
I’d just like to hear how these officials can justify these no-call/call decisions.

Wasn't it

Jeff Van Gundy not Stan who was talking about Yao? And Derek Fisher belongs in the WWE with the way he flops when the wind blows in his direction.

All I gotta say is....

The kings were one hell of a team back then. Lets, all of us, as fans, give Bob Deleany as much hell as we can at dubs games this season. If for nothing more than our hatred for the Los Angeles Fakers.

OUTRAGEOUS!!!

are you insinuating that a corporation that sells it’s product for advertising revenue would somehow tamper with that product to make it more marketable!? inconceivable! seriously though what’s really offensive is that this dialogue only began because one ref got caught. he’s like the lee harvey oslwald of tampering; a small-time decoy in a vast conspiracy that reaches to the very top of the chain of command. of course, this will never be adressed in any meaningful way, because it can’t. professional sports are too deeply entrenched to be uprooted to some kind of impartial, non-corporate entity, and as long as there’s money to be made, nothing will be fair. the role of business is not to peacefully coexist with the populace, catering to it’s wants and needs. the role of business is to rape a pillage, to murder the poor and innocent, and to destroy everything that stands in the way of profit. so is the nba real? of course. is it somehow “legitimate” or “fair”? what are we five? the dispenses legitimate sport about as much as a court dispenses justice. it’s a fairy tale

I'm keen on the professional basketball club The Golden State Warriors. I don't fancy other clubs.

Bob Delaney

Im all for the movement to boo the shiet out of him, hated him even before he completely screwed the warriors when fisher flopped and pulled down Monta with the game on the line and out of no where, and out of position in comes Delaney to call an offensive foul, horrible call, the guy was a former snitch so screw him.

by pbra17 on Aug 3, 2008 4:24 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Sure, call him a bad referee if you want

(Even if you’re going to use just one sequence to judge him by)

But why is being an undercover is cause for resentment? Why would you be in favor of allowing organized crime to run rampant? Celebrating criminal activity is moronic.

Where to begin?

May I suggest that people proof read there Fanposts before they submit them? I mean c’mon… The grammatical errors can be pretty distracting. Also, Stan Van Gundy never coached Yao Ming nor said anything about the way he is officiated. I’ll give the benefit of the doubt that mixing Stan and Jeff Van Gundy was just a mental error. I just wish people took a little more pride in the way they articulate their thoughts on here.

Also, just wanted to remind y’all that a small market team has won about 40% of NBA titles in the last decade (Spurs). I’m not so sure if that argument holds up.

yeah

yeah it rigged one way or another. Rememeber when warriors lost to the mass or the game fisher pulled monte and monte got the foul. Its been rigged. Money is the NBA. Why is only one ref caught where are all the others who were involved and why doesn’t the NBA apologies for past games and for the fans and teams that were on the losing end of this scandal.

if the dubs dont win......

if the dubs dont win the championship this year…..the nbas fake. jk. seriously though, why do you think the lakers and celtics have won 31 nba titles…..? i don’t know when this fixing game stuff started to happen…i happen to think earlier than most people think…......david stern should resign or there should be some coup to take over the nba and clean out the league by firing all the referees….....are we as fans really naive enough to think that there was only one tim donaghy out of all the nba officials….? and are we naive to think that the problem is not much deeper and does not lead up through to the top with stern? why do you think he was so quick to shut the case and claimed there were absolutely no other refs in question?

think about it…all sports are fixed. umpires in baseball hold the game in their hands by dictating the strike-zone…and the black sox scandal from the 1919 world series proved it. and i have no doubt in my mind that not only franchises, but commissioner selig knew about performance enhancers but why was nothing brought up for at least a decade? because homeruns and power sold money and helped the game to recover after the strike. the only reason roids were uncovered was because whistleblowers had the guts to bring the issue up.

why did nfl commissioner roger goodell destroy the patriots tapes so quickly before congress could get its hands on them? and why do you think the nfl and matt walsh came to terms so quickly? do we now really believe that the patriots are as good as they were last season…and did they really deserve any of those superbowls?

fans are quick to forget these things and the commissioners, owners and referees involved know this. those who fix games know that there will always be controversies involving fraud and fixed games….but if the storyline they want plays out, it won’t matter anyways. additionally, fans of the teams that win are natural buffer-zones in terms of negating the question of fixed games…

the only time that fixed games can be overcome is when players and teams beat the odds and truly dominate the other team. if the games or series are close, id bet on the man deciding who wins or loses. the good old days of sports is over, and its now about ratings, popularity and good story lines over good old playing ball.

that’s why i love the dubs style of play as a style that counters fraudulent calls by referees….when a team has big men as its focal point, the refs have an easier time controlling the game because most fouls occur in the paint. when you have a drive/dish/perimeter and run-gun style, the control of the game is in the hands of the team because foul calls are not as obscure as in the paint.

you only win when you put in.
-J.

I remember watching this game and saying the NBA was fixed.

It’s interesting that Bill Walton doesn’t announce games any more, I always liked his blunt honesty on the horrible calls of the officials.

It's all about the killer cross-over baby!

by ADOBO on Aug 4, 2008 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

There's fake and then there's greedy

30 teams. 80 games each. ~2400 games.

I think for the most part the front office doesn’t care whether the Bobcats beat the Raptors in December. Or whether the Warriors beat anybody (apart from a few pungent ‘We Believe’ moments). But are there meetings with Stern & co. where they decide what’s best for the fiduciary health of the league and their own wallets? Almost certainly.

In the WWE, there’s scripts and rehearsals and entire outcomes decided beforehand. In the NBA there’s moments, there’s crossroads, and there’s a devil at those crossroads making deals. I would be greatly surprised to learn there’s a wicked conspiracy wall chart somewhere that shows exactly how many plays Kobe gets free passes on for the whole season… But did Jerry West and Kevin McHale talk to the front office before ‘deciding’ to release superstars to the dynasties? That phone call was not in a script, but we’re pretty sure we know what Stern said to them.

Most of the time we can be reasonably certain that the referees are letting them play. But when there’s other factors in the mix, the fix is in.

And in response to those who say only big market teams win, I have a better four word answer than ‘The San Antonio Spurs.’ It’s ‘The New York Knickerbockers.’

by Ormolov on Aug 4, 2008 10:24 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually

“Spurs” is a better answer to those who say “only big market teams win.”

“Knickerbockers” is a better answer to those who say “big market teams always win.”

San Antonio is the #37 media market in the country. Sacramento is #20, and the Bay Area is #5 or 6, ahead of Boston, Detroit, and Miami. As the Kinks sang, “it is time for you stop all of your sobbing…”

Unless I'm reading this incorrectly...

Portland, OR is 23, while Green Bay, WI is 70. There’s another city called Portland, which may be where the confusion is.

where the hell did that come from?

Always something convoluted in these paranoid conspiracy theories :>)
I like to keep it simple and the simple answer is usually the parties involved are not smart enough to pull off a glorious scheme so it’s just a coincidence that a ref is a crook and stern is a jerk.

I was questioning what being jewish had to do with Stern’s ability to run the league or not… And I agree the conspiracy theories are silly too.

Yup

And Portland winning 13 games in a row last year was fixed. So was Houston when they won 22 in a row. without Yao.

BTW, San Antonio is small market? Its a pretty big city with a large payroll. I dont know if I would consider them small, maybe extra medium.

Put a little mustard on it

Fixed games and cheating refs

Man, I started watching those Lakers/Kings links but couldn’t bc they just reminded me how p*ssed that series made me them first time around. All those phantom calls on the Kings. Maybe I’m biased as a Laker hater but does anyone remember I think it was 2000 Lakers/Blazers- the Blazers were loaded that year 2 deep at every position- there was a game either game 7 or a closeout game for the Blazers, Portland had like a 25 point lead in the third quarter and it just evaporated and they could not buy a call.

Seems like the whole small market team thing only really comes into play in the west when LA is involved bc all the other good teams are small and medium markets for the most part. In both those cases the Blazers and Kings had great teams and were seemingly outplaying the Lakers but it seems like NBA got what they wanted – Shaq, Kobe and the LA market – into the finals.

I also feel like Jazz and Spurs get way too much love from the refs, even though I realize Jazz lead the league in fouls (they better the way they play). I think this is more a matter of coaches (and vets in the Spurs case) knowing how to play the refs. I realize I am a biased as hell fan who hates the Lakers, Spurs, Jazz, Fisher, Bowen, HOrry, Sloan so I’m curious if others have had the same impression as me.
