Will Marco Belinelli be a threat, ever?
Marco Bellineli. Love him. Hate him. No question there is potential. But how will we ever see it?
Look at most of the great shooters in the NBA. Most of them (with the exception of a few - Ray Allen, Larry Bird) all had two things which we lack : a pass first point guard and a dominant post man. These are two essential ingredients to give shooters wide open looks.
Pass First Point Guard - Baron Davis is not the typical "pass first" PG. I have a feeling Monta Ellis won't be either. Having a PG that can penetrate and create is very helpful to a shooter. I mean, if we had Nash or Kidd they would probably be setting Beli up all day with open looks. I mean, Reggie Miller had Marc Jackson, even Jeff Hornysex had John Stockton. Since we do not carry one of this types, and a pass first PG is basically extinct in the modern day NBA, Bellinelli will probably suck until we get one.
Dominant Post Man - Post man can create shots for shooters when they are double teamed. When they are good passers to boot, it makes it even more unstoppable baby. Picture Chris Webber and Peja Stojakovic. That tandem was money. Steve Kerr had Michael Jordan and Tim Duncan. I really think this team still has no post players, dominant at that. Ronny Turiaf filled a need but he is not going to command double teams on the block. Nor Jacko or Maggette. If we do not get someone who can command a double team on the post, Bellinelli will probably suck.
I want Bellinelli to succeed, but I do not think there is enough pieces around him to make him better. There have been many successful shooters without these two aspects: Michael Redd, Mike Miller, Kyle Korver, Glen Rice, Chuck and Wesley Person.
I know Bellinelli wants to be more than a shooter, I get it.He wants to play D, he wants to be a PG, etc. But he will always be known as a shooter. There are people who already gave up on this kid, but I am saying with the right parts, he would be a threat in the league.
What's everyone's take on Marco Belinelli becoming a threat in this league and with our team? Does he need help or can he do it by himself? Future Baller or Future Bust?
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

That is freaking hilarious! You always seem to come up with the greatest images.
It’s too bad that I think Marco is more likely going to be a bust. I would be happy to be proven wrong.

Like TBS pointed out, I want Marco to succeed too. (Lol, I’ve had 2-3 hot streeks last season on 2k8 with marco lighting up the 3pt line!) I’d love to see some D from him next season as well :-)

Well, Ray Allen, Manu Ginobili, and Peja Stojakovic didnt exactly have breakout seasons in their rookie/sophomore years. I’m sure once Marco gets used to the NBA level of play and starts getting some consistent minutes off the bench, he’ll start developing and blossoming into a good NBA player and live up to the potential us Warrior fans can see in him.
WARRIORS BASKETBALL!!! Patiently waiting for a title...I may be waiting for a long time...

BARON
is a pass first guard. the guy was top 5 i think in assist. give him credit man.. he averaged more assist than tony parker and people say he’s a pass first guard
by ADOBO on Aug 4, 2008 4:19 PM PDT 0 recs
Baron a pass first PG?
U really think so? Yes he was top 5 but he played the most minutes out of all those players, which means his efficiency was not too high. If Baron plays 40 mins and avgs 8 assists and Jose Calderon plays 30 mins and avgs 8 assists, who is more efficient in the passing game?
I’m not saying Baron was wack, I’m saying he’s not a pass first PG. He would rather shoot. My pass first PGs: Nash, Kidd, Jose Calderon, Andre Miller, Rajon Rondo, Brevin Knight. Not too many of those players in the league.
Besides, Baron Davis actually was top 6 in Shots Attempted. How can u argue vs. that?
Put a little mustard on it

in theory he is the right kind of guy for the system
but he is probably not the right kind of guy for nellie. its like nellie is looking for him to be multifaceted and he is not that kind of player yet. imo the future doesnt look good for rambo jr. nellie trying to find a way to use him and he cant. seeing if he can be a back up pg. maybe nellie will try him at the 4 next. let the kid be who he is whatever that is. but who am i to say i dont have over 1200 wins under my belt. good luck bellie where ever you get traded to.

it is more likely we’ll see his offensive game flurish under Nelson’s system – made for shooters to shoot – than to see his defensive skills improve. Defense is such an underrated part of the game and requires unique set of skills, anticipation, quickness, basketball IQ, etc…If can set up his game defensively by deflecting passes, taking charges and stealing, that’ll be enough for me as a fan. I would look forward to see his complete offensive game, I believe he’s a play maker type of guy. he will get chances to run the point and show his passing skills too.

Until Belinelli shows he can defend against Nba shooting guards, I feel he may never play minutes unless its garbagio time :( although I wish for the best.

if he's going to git anywhere, it's here
I don’t see Marco as a bad fit here. Like someone else said, Nelson will alow him to shoot a lot, which is what he likes to do. Furthermore, Nellie has never really had just one point guard who handles the ball. Even last year, he’d have Jackson or Ellis start the offense all the time. With how much Maggette is going to play inside, I think Belinelli will have plenty of chances to handle the ball and to get perimeter shots (see him playing PG in summer league).
Aside from all that, I don’t get all the pessimism here. You guys are all down on Wright and Belinelli after just one year. Look at what Nowitzki did in his first year under Nelson. Rookies do not do well in his system. Give it some time. From what I’ve seen of both players, they look like they can play.

passing
Beli’s passing looked promising in SL, but that dang shot selection seems as bad as ever. Dude has decent court vision though.
Hoping for improvement this season but preparing myself for the possibility of seeing Marco take the bus to busterville this year.
If that happens, maybe D’Antoni’s Knicks will take him off our hands – he’s got to like the thought of adding another Italian player to his squad.

Belinelli
I really doubt his development is really that much impacted by his teammates. The only way he’s going to get minutes in this league is if he can hit his shots, and play semi-decent defense. With his unorthodox way of shooting, it doesn’t matter if someone’s in front of him or if he’s wide open. If he’s wide open, he’s shooting it off balance anyway. It looks cool, he can get his shot off against anyone really, he just has to hit it with consistency.
But his defense really needs to step up. Even sharpshooters like JJ Reddick can’t even get playing time, who’s “perhaps the greatest shooter in NBA history” according to the BetterBasketball DVD’s (you know what I’m talking about). Belinelli can be the greatest shooter this world has ever seen, but if his defense isn’t anywhere near acceptable, he won’t make it in this league.
by YaHeard on Aug 4, 2008 7:11 PM PDT 0 recs
I hate that about his shot…it’s great that he can shoot at any time/situation, but why does he have to lunge back with off balance shots when he is wide open?
Agree about the D too – it’s so horrible that even Nellie could not justify giving him any playing time to work out of his shooting slumps.

forget all this man. he will get good looks. with screens, with running the floor, with ball movement with his man helping out when monta drives or helping out on a pick and roll when he is on the weakside, with him creating his own shot, etc.
i don’t buy this. he will get shots, he just needs to make them.

Will Marco Belinelli be a threat, ever?..... What? Why?
Just way too early to tell, either way. If it’s half full, then Marco’s another scoring prospect, who’s capable of having big games. If it’s half empty, then he’s a flawed, streaky, turn-over proned, Euro who can’t guard anybody. The idea is you improve your strengths into weapons, and you fill the holes with dirt. Rarely do players come along that are strong in most aspects of the game. If he becomes a very good scorer and +/- average defender, I like a player like him on our team. He will score and make some passes. Maybe get youtube’d on the wrong side, but hey..
Hopefully the ascension begins sooner than later and he graduates into the rotation.
A young player’s confidence is the only thing he’s got going for him, adjusting to a new league of professionals. 1st round draft picks are only as good as their last game, and from the way he was used last season, I couldn’t be too harsh on Italian kid for not having balls, and choking in the most crucial moments.
What Nelson “should” have done, was put Marco in while the team was hot on a roll. When the shots are falling from everywhere and the other team’s back on their heels, THEN Nelson should have put him in and let him run the wing on the break. The rhythm of the game, the crowd, would be enough to allow most any rook’s confidence to grow. The game becomes simplified within the unison of the team’s success, and that rubs off, even on rookies. This the situation where he has the better chance to succeed, and after he has a good game, and he’s made those two back to back shots, or made that highlight dime, everyone feels better about him playing next game, most importantly, Marco himself. You build up rookie’s little by little, putting in them in favorable postions.(end quarter runs, where you can suavely take them out, without taking out the air with them)
Instead, most of the times I just saw Nelson occasionally throw him in the game when Barnes or Pietrus was stinking it up, and he was looking for anybody else on the roster to do anything for him. In these situations especially, it’s the worst time to play any rookie. The team’s down points, your bench is cold, and you get the bright idea to shock the rookie out of his warm-up’s and up to the plate when it matters the most, when it’s deciding if the game is lost or won. So obviously the pressure’s on now, everybody’s watching, and Nellie’s on the sideline looking like he’s ready to burst. The crowd can’t even control themselves, and they’re screaming like Usher fans every time MB touches the ball, daring the 26 foot jumper…...Belinelli misses his first shot. UH OH!!!! He checks over his shoulder to see if the hooks coming….but it’s not. Maybe the next time he catches a pass off a screen he’d normally go right up with, confidently. But he thinks about it twice and hesitates long enough for the defender to close in and alter the shot. It pounds off the backboard and misses the rim completely. YANK.
How would you feel? Poor little bugger.
But seriously, I believe in Belinelli more than not, and from an amateur perspective, I like many of his abilities. His shot can be sharpened into a serious weapon. He would do well to limit his fade away’s and leaner’s to 14-17 ft…get in better shape, invest in a bike and peddle next to Mully for a few hours after practice every day..stronger legs under his shot, no leaning or fading, and a high motor(which can only be built by a superior work ethic) I believe would elevate his game, and allow him to shoot with more consistency and a higher percentage. Belinelli is working with a good handle, above average for his position. Please do not mistaken this with taking the ball to trouble or dribbling into the teeth of defense. That has much less too do with a player’s ability to handle a basketball than it does his awareness and ability to pick up on defensive reads quickly… that should come with experience.. He get’s the ball out of his hands quickly to teammates for assists. The vision and the artistry of a point guard is naturally embedded in his offense.. His lazy defense, lack of physicality, toughness under the rim, gambling on steals, ill advised reaching on help defense picking up meaningless fouls, and fading away on uncontested and long range shots, are all flaws in his game. (I remember KOBE’s rookie season, the fadeaway clankers from deep with his feet kicked out)
He’s going to improve. He’s going to fail. Either way you don’t know, but don’t trick yourself into believing that you do know. You just got to sit on your ass and watch the show. You can’t make something out of nothing and face it, you got nothing. Just see what happens and hope for the best for God’s sake. Way too early for all the headaches and complaining and wallowing.

Belinelli Might Get Cut Before Season Starts
If he doesn’t show any progress in the defensive category, why should we keep him. Anthony Morrow has shown better shooting ability. Morrow is faster, stronger, better shooter, better rebounder, better passer and better defender. During practice up to the start of the season, (IMO) Morrow will supplant Belinelli. Of course, we all know Buike is far superior to Belinelli. I’m still not sure why Belinelli is still on the roster. He showed ZERO progress this summer.
