Stephen Jackson - Key Contributor or Malcontent Whiner??
As Baron bolted to SoCal for personal and monetary reasons, so did the roster's star power and leadership. But Mully made some great offseason moves to fill the void left by Boom by creating depth on the roster and some versatility. Looking at the new Warriors roster makes me feel optimistic for the upcoming season, except for one player -- Stephen Jackson.
Captain Jack is the lone member of the tri-captain squad from last year. His grit and leadership is much needed for the Dubs to be successful this season, but he is now the least-paid player of the starting five:
1. Monta Ellis - $11,000,000
2. Al Harrington - $9,226,250
3. Andris Biedrins - $9,000,000
4. Corey Maggette - $8,275,862
5. Stephen Jackson - $7,140,000
S-Jax is up for an extention soon, as the '09-'10 season is the last year of his contract. I highly doubt that Mully would offer him one that Jack would be content with. He is 30 years old and his best years are behind him. It's beginning to look like Jack's Warrior days are coming to an end within the next two years. How will all this effect Stephen's play this year? Will he suck it up and be the professional leader of this young squad or will he sulk all year wondering why The Captain is not gettin' his??
Also, the fact that his homeboy Harrington is getting shopped around doesn't really help matters either. Talent and depth can take a team so far, but without great chemistry, it's doomed for a tumultuous season (i.e. New York Knicks). Let's hope Stephen Jackson comes in with a great attitude and carries himself as the true leader that he has shown as a Warrior.

He can be both
Well .. “malcontent whiner” is REALLY strong, but he certainly be a nuisance if he isn’t happy. Jackson is by far one of the best teammates to have in the league .. he’s like that guy you can always rely on to say and do the right things. In the locker room after losses, he never made excuses but always had a great positive spin on things .. although he’d acknowledge mistakes, he always saw the silver lining. It’s good to have a guy like that.
But that’s because he’s been happy in the Bay Area ..

If he is smart
He’ll be a good soldier and play hard, no matter how he really feels. He’s playing for his next contract, and he has to show the entire LEAGUE, not just those who follow the Warriors, that he’s willing to play hard and put his past behind him.
Not that he doesn’t always play hard, but he takes himself out of games by freaking out over refs and stuff—and it will hurt him when it’s time for his next deal, probably costing him millions (literally). He has these next season(s) to show he won’t be a distraction on and off the court and is worth the money that his play usually shows him to be.
He’d be a great addition to a lot of teams, but because of his age and history I doubt he’ll get more than the MLE. If he shows he can be trusted and that his time with the Dubs can be duplicated elsewhere, then he’ll have as strong of a season as he ever did for the Warriors.
He’s still in his prime, 30 ain’t old. He’s got at least 2 years of top play left, provided he’s healthy. I’m sure he’ll relish the chance to be the (pretty much) top dogg and get to shoot even more contested threes with 17 seconds left on the shot clock.

I agree, excpet I think Jackson showed last year that he’s matured enough to keep his emotions is check. He seemed like a different player last year.

0-6 start without Captain Jack, Nuff said.... Jax has always been our true Leader....
Tell me WHY you would hate on Jax, I know he plays with his heart more than his head but that is his strength, why would you not accept that and be thankful we have him here for a few more years? hopefully… He has shown so much control of his emotions since he got here, he is that rare player that harnesses his emotions and usually works for him and not against, He really draws from the support of the fans at Roaracle, and it shows… everyone in my section last year was talking BS about Jax at first couple games, I kept saying wait until he gets back, then when he came back and we won games they all were how great Jax is… Jax is the best Leader and Clutch player we have and I for one am thankful he is here…

Since the Indy trade I haven’t heard a single comment about Jax’s attitude being anything but positive at GS, though I certainly understand your pov. The flip side is that with Baron gone he possibly gets more love – respected by teammates, shots, media attention, etc. & may be just as if not more happy.
Whether or not GS wins more than 2 of those first 6 games last year even with Jax playing is debatable. I always thought the media and organization made more out of that excuse than was warranted.

he is definitly both
whiner when he is yelling at the ref cuz he got the ball stolen away with that high dribble. contributor when he goes 5 for 7 from 3.
i think the sun is already strating to set on his career. he already has lost a step and may lose another one soon. he plays with alot of heart but heart can only take you so far sometimes. he is definitly a presence on the the team. what kind will probably depend on how well he is playing.

He'll be great
He’s always appreciated his chance for a rebirth in a Warriors Uniform. He won’t disrespect that. He has been a professional on and off the court and will continue to be so. He is in his prime – not decline just yet- in my opinion. I hope he he plays his ass off – and gets a big pay day for it by a contender (in the east – or us) down the road.

Actually Captain Jack had a career season in PPG, FT%, 3PT% and even MPG (probably a bigger negative than positive though)

His improvement in rebounds per game is not particularly significant. The bulk of his “improvement” last year was a factor of more minutes played. His rebounds per minute was still lower than it was at the beginning of his career and it was not his best scoring year. While it was one of his better seasons, it wasn’t all that different from the bulk of his career.

His RPG this season 4.4, which is his third highest total in RPGs in his career (4.9pg in 04-05; 4.6 in 03-04.)
The 07-08 campaign was, by far, his best PPG season, averaging 20.1 PPG. The closest he came to a number like that was 04-05 in Indiana with 18.7 PPG.
I’ll also throw in that, aside from his “We Believe” campaign numbers, this season was his best APG numbers also.
With all of that in mind, I will concede that those numbers are in part due to his inflated MPG. His MPG doesn’t change the fact that I feel he is not over his hill and that this year was one of his best seasons.

His MPG doesn’t change the fact that I feel he is not over his hill and that this year was one of his best seasons.
Definitely! More minutes per game means he’s better than any of his subs, and it also means the energy must be spread over a longer time so the performance per minute should naturally go down a bit, just like a sprinter being faster per yard than a miler.
Jax should be considered our team leader based on his skils set …defense, basketball IQ , and heart, a welcome personality in an otherwise pretty bland group.

This is somewhat true. Fatigue does present itself as a factor at some point, but evidence suggests that more playing time improves performance within limits. It is often not the case that per minute production goes down with increased playing time, and it’s not a linear function in any event.
A 20 mpg player isn’t significantly more rested such that he can exert so much more energy than a 30mpg player to compensate for the effect of find a rhythm, of figuring out tendencies of opponents and teammates. The burst of energy from less playing time and more rest don’t seem to compensate for being in the ‘flow of the game’, or being ‘warmed up’ or whatever you wan to call it.
In general, increasing someone’s PT from

You are falling into the error of “per game”, ignoring variation in minutes played. Getting more rebounds by being on the court (especially in a fast paced game). His rebounding percentage (percent of the available rebounds that he got) was the second lowest of his career. This is a much, much, much more important number than the ‘per game’ total.
His scoring efficiency and assists were actually up over what he’d done for most of his career. They weren’t radically better, but they were better.

jae, do you have any evidence to expect a statistically significant difference from
the change from Baron to Maggette in the starting lineup? (not asking you to do more work, just wondering)
thinking that by sliding Ellis to PG and Jax to SG their relative production might increase (especially if Ellis keeps rebounding at last year’s clip as PG) – but how much? all hypothetical projections of course, but is there any reason to think we could actually be better off in the starting line up ???
wondering about some of last year’s slow starts and wondering if Maggs will pay immediate dividends in the first quarters this year ...
by hardcore on Aug 8, 2008 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It really hinges on what sort of performance we see from Monta at the point. Maggs does not replace Baron based on what they did last year, but it’s not a huge difference. My fear is that Baron probably added to the performance of others more than most. Contrary to popular opinion, there are very, very few players who “make their teammates better” in any way that can be measured. If Monta doesn’t make people worse, the team will be a shade below what they were last year.
The other worry is injury. Last year, the team was blessed with above average health. That’s something to be concerned with.

Jackson wants to be the veteran leader and not be labeled as a thug anymore. I don’t believe he will be a douschebag like that.

Captain Jack reminds me of a burning fire cracker—Definitely exciting and fun to look at, but sooner or later it’s gonna blow your head off. He was on his best behavior last year but he worries me when he tries to force things. Not having Baron around might make him try to assume the #1 scoring option and there will be no stopping his pull up three’s with 19 seconds left on the shot clock.
by FiveAlarmFreddy on Aug 7, 2008 7:00 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Definitely disagree with that.
Everyone on the Warriors including Jax and Maggette know that this is not Baron’s team anymore, they know they are more of a team then last year, but everyone in the organization and all the fans have made one thing clear, this is Monta’s team now!! Monta will be numero uno for scoring, or Maggette, but definitely not Jax. This team has more defined role’s than last year. Jax knows his role, best perimeter(sometimes post) defender, best jump shooter, energizer, role model and captain. Offensive star of the team is not his role. That is actually one role that Jax really never tries to assume. He’ll shoot a lot to try and find his rythm, but last year and this year he know’s unless he is rollin that he is the 2nd or 3rd scoring option.
Everyone last year on the team including Baron would talk about how Monta’s is naturally one of the most offensively gifted players in the league, and how he would just kill everyone in practice. Even Maggette made several comments about it being Monta’s team. They all have role’s and they all know its Monta’s show. And the vet’s know it’s their job to help develop the youth. Jax is the kind of player to encourage his teamates to steal the show and wow the crowd, he’ll take over if he’s feelin it, like the Laker game last year. But he always would let Baron command and do his thing, and unless Monta screws up bad, he will be giving the same treatment to Monta and even Magg’s. He is truly 100% Captian Jack now.

Captain Jack
That’s all you need to know. He is going to try and be the one all star this year who doesn’t lead his team in any one category, accept 3’s attempted, and makes the all star team for being the best leader and role model in the league.

a leader? hella no he isn’t!!!! He need to stop running the team since all he does is bomb away 3’s. that it. His whinning isn’t new to me at all. He is the third scoring opitons on the team. He will never be a all star. Monta might be the only warriors that will be a all star. And we all don’t how the future is going to turn out.

If it’s like typing on AIM, then I wonder if people you communicate with there can’t understand you either. The issue with grammar is that it makes it easier for people to understand each other when we stick close to some common rules. Start to deviate from it too much and it gets hard to understand what you’re trying to get across.
No need for the profanity. If you’re that stressed out, go do something else. Ride a bike down to the park and work on your jumper. Bake a cake. Role one if you got some.
