The Cohn Zohn - How to Handle "The Monta Situation," and Encouraging Information Regarding his Ankle

First, Lowell Cohn explains in detail exactly how the Warriors management should handle The Monta Ellis Situation from here on out:

http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20080911/SPORTS/809110289/1010/SPORTS&title=Warriors_have_a_template_for_Ellis

Next, Cohn gives an encouraging tidbit on Monta's ankle, noting that the injury is the same injury (torn deltoid ligament) that Terrell Owens suffered and made a full recovery from in 2004.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I’m gonna have to agree with Cohn’s first article. That we shouldn’t just give up on Monta yet and void his contract. Let him heal and see how he looks when he gets back, for now, just support him all the way and hope for a speedy recovery. It is still too early to react with a voided contract or something like that. Give the kid a chance, hes got potential to be a superstar in this league. Monta all the way!

Great advice by Cohn, I’m going to have to agree 100% with how to deal with Monta. Don’t make any rash decisions until you know what your going to get from Monta in the upcoming years. It seems that most people are agreeing that Monta won’t be close to 100% until 2009, wait until then.

This is ridiculous

Who, in their right mind would, would VOID the contract of your star player when ALL DOCTORS INVOLVED are saying that he’s going to be back in 4 months and back to full strength. It’s not like he shattered his pelvis and people are saying “you’ll be lucky to walk again”. This is riduculous reporting.

Hey everybody, check out this link.

Could we legally void it? If so I’d go shopping for a power forward or point guard just in case Montay don’t heal up. He’s no T.O. even at 100% anyway.

Could we void it? Possibly. The union would challenge it, but if he really was shown to have violated one of the prohibitions and it was considered sufficiently detrimental to the franchise as a result, there might be an out.

BUT voiding his contract doesn’t help us “shop” for that power forward. It doesn’t give us back Monta’s contract as free money to spend on the free agent market (for that free agent who doesn’t actually exist at this point in time anyhow) nor does it miraculously give us trading leverage to get that same mythical powerforward in a trade.

Voiding his contract would mean he’d sign somewhere else for the MLE. We would not have him nor would we have another player to replace him. Voiding the contract would be stupid.

So if all the players on a team did something stupid and got hurt the team would be stuck with no one ? Doesn’t seem logical to make them keep a voided player on the books ?
What if a team plane crashed, the cap would still apply to the dead players?

If all the players did this, then the team would be able to void the contracts and be under the cap. But that’s an entirely different situation from voiding one contract.

If Monta’s contract is voided, it’s off the books. But Monta’s contract off the books doesn’t give us any tools to get another player. Without him on the books we’re STILL over the cap. That’s why voiding it doesn’t help. We’d have an overall lower team payroll, but it wouldn’t be a payroll under the cap where we could then sign someone. His salary cannot magically be transformed into another player. The provisions of the cap (e.g. must be under it to sign someone) still apply.

rumors

are there any rumors yet circulating on what the dubs organization is going to do with this situation??

by Young Moolah on Sep 11, 2008 10:33 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Haha

You the great part about sensationalistic reporting/blogging is that if you exaggerate your initial reaction (Monta’s career is in jeopardy) then you can come back with “encouraging reports” about Monta’s ankle. You get two stories in one. The first where you make baseless reactionary claims and then the second where you come back to earth and report what everyone else was saying from the get-go like it’s news.

If only we would have listened to Iggy and let AB walk and drafted Love with our first round pick everything would be ok right now. =P

I Know, Right!

Too bad all the gms around the league agreed with me and pumped up Love’s draft value. But don’t worry, we still have a shot at Jrue Holiday in 09!

Go Bruins!

Love

I would have loved to get the guy, I just thought we never had a chance. He really would have been a good fit for us IMO.

I'm still waiting

For the Cohn child to put his money where his (big) mouth is and bet me that Kevin Love is going to have a better season in ‘08/09 than Biedrins. The stakes? He has to change his GSoM handle for a year to "I am Biedrins’ B*tch" or I have to change mine to “I Wuv Kevin Wuv” (or similar moniker of his choice). Obviously Biedrins is likely to win that smackdown, but it’s really not a bad deal for the Iggster given the respective rates at which we post here.

Meanwhile, you gotta love how he attributes Love’s high draft status to NBA GMs “agreeing with him.” Damn, that Cohn boy has some serious influence! If he hadn’t talked him up so much on GSoM, Love could be our starting PF right now… :-P

Haha

I’m not gonna wager against a warrior. I don’t want to have to root against a player on my favorite team.

Back in march, Biedrins had just come off his surgery and was playing poorly, and brandan wright looked good. plus mock drafts still had love in the bottom of the firts round, for some reason. I got excited, and based on the premise that a biedrins/wright frontcourt is not a frountcourt we should build around, and the fact that we had limited space under the cap because baron hadn’t opted out yet, and my novice knowledge of the cap (thanks to jae i think i understand it much better now), i thought – let’s save money. we gotta pick between biedrins or wright, love compliments both. let’s pick wright.

that was march. i was wrong. a lot of things have changed. i now believe that biedrins is unquestionably the better piece to build around (as opposed to wright), love skyrocketed up the draft boards, and baron opted out, which changed our whole financial situation. Then we signed turiaf, who is very much a poor man’s love, in that he’s a guy who can conceivably play both the 4 and 5 for us, hit a jumper, and pass.

so mullin sorta agreed with the rough idea behind all my madness. that piece was needed on this team. but all the craziness i stirred up back in march was a bit unfounded. my apologies to anyone i offended (mostly jae),

i hope biedrins has a waaay better season than love. i hope biedrins breaks out this year.

i’m glad that we got randolph. I think it was the absolute best pick we could have gotten at 14, and i believe that he, not wright, is our future 4. I believe wright will be a rotation player at best for us, and he’ll fit well on the court with turiaf.

And as always, debates in march about things that happen in june are kinda silly anyway.

Wow, you’re just flip floppin all over the place R’nt ,cha.
I kinda think your first instinct was correct, Love is gonna be better than Dris someday. Dris has probably peaked out since he doesn’t really have any shooting skills. You can only move some much without the ball before you’re just wastin everyone’s time.
Wright vs Randolf? I think you had it right the first time too, Wright knows his skill set and is comfortable with it, just needs the opportunity to play it. Rudolf thinks he can be a point guard but apparently doesn’t take a look in the mirror so I question his intellect?

We can't base our opinions of Randolph on summer league alone

Nelson told him to be aggressive. We don’t really know how he’ll play in an NBA where he isn’t the best player on the court, and he has a short leash from the coach.

His skill set is much more intriguing than wright’s, which is pretty much the same as biedrins’

by Iggy_Zohn on Sep 11, 2008 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

huh, you see those three having the same skill set? the rook’s got some handles, the soph’s got some scoring ability, and the vet can rebound, defend some, and dunk … sound the same?

by hardcore on Sep 11, 2008 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

wright has more scoring ability than biedrins? questionable. but he still score in basically the same ways.

by Iggy_Zohn on Sep 11, 2008 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

wright has more scoring ability than biedrins?

I’ve seen wright actually shoot the ball in from a short distance but I’ve never seen Dris make a basket unless he can place the ball in the rim without it traveling thru the air. So for scoring ceiling my money is on Wright, he can shoot decently and also do the Dris dunk thing.
Rudolf will take a season to know for sure but my impression is all hat, no cattle.

Yeah, drafted him with our #14 pick that Iggy argued ( based on the “expert” opinion of Kawakami) would have been sufficient to get Love.

by jae on Sep 11, 2008 12:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah,

I’m glad somebody’s paying attention. He got himself all tied up and twisted around simultaneously arguing that Love would be better than Andris but would somehow be overlooked by thirteen other teams in the draft. It was a low point for simple reasoning on GSoM.

Yup, it was in March or April or whenever it was before the NBA regular season ended. And people with brains could see that you didn’t have a clue, that your position that Love would be great AND that he’d slip (at the time to a projected 17 or 18 where the Warriors appeared likely to pick) were ridiculous then. Why exactly do you think that it being March somehow made your logically inconsistent points less ludicrous? That pre-law class must have scrambled your brain something fierce.

by jae on Sep 11, 2008 4:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

dude

you need to relax…

and it is possible to get good players late in the draft (monta, agent zero are recent GSW steals), and klove was thought of as a borderline lottery player at best before his impressive final four run.

either way, im not entirely sure why so many people are stuck on one GSoM poster’s opinion on who we should have drafted back in March… it is especially disconcerting considering we all know we would be absolutely THRILLED to have ended up with Love.

Maybe you weren't around or paying attention...

Bug Iggy had 3 fanposts specifically suggesting letting Beans WALK for the express purpose of drafting KLove. Oh, I forgot, we’re all about love and happiness. Go Warriors! They’re going to win 60 games after we trade Hendrix and a conditional 2nd rounder in ’14 for Kevin Love. You heard it here first! By the way, check out my blog www.dubsfaninboston.com. My daddy gave it to me.

The content was lame

The tone was even lamer. You got a faint whiff of it in this thread with his “all the GMs around the league agreed with me” line. I wish I could say he was being ironic. Talking out of your a** is one thing — we all do it at one point or another. Talking out of your a** while acting like you’re an NBA authority is a special category. The fact that months later a lot of the regulars on this site (most of them sweeter-natured than I) still hold Mr. Iggy up for special scorn should tell you something.

FWIW: yes, like pretty much everyone on this site, I would have been thrilled if the Ws had grabbed Love in the draft. I would have been thrilled if they had grabbed Beasley too.

Don't mess with ^^^^ !!
