Ben Gordon to Golden State for Al Harrington Trade Rumor?

http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9997

Over at Hoopsworld I found this short little trade rumor about Al Harrington for Ben Gordon written by Bill Ingram.

This one actually has an outside chance of happening. The reason is pretty obvious, as the Warriors need some help now that Monta Ellis is out, and Gordon is as good an option at the point as Ellis would have been. And Gordon can certainly run and gun the way Don Nelson likes his teams to do. On the Chicago side, not only do they solve a major headache by getting rid of Gordon, they also clear up some of their log jam in the back court and acquire someone who can really push this team to the next level in Harrington.

so what do you guys think of this trade rumor? could ben gordon be the PG that the warriors need to fill in for monta's injury, or more importantly how would this move pan out for the future?

terrible idea

my new mantra: monta ellis is out for a few months, not a few years, don’t saddle the team with someone who cannot play in the same backcourt as him.

so when monta comes back, is the plan to be absurdly undersized at the guards, bring maggette or jack off the bench and hope that wright pans out straight away? or to be absurdly undersized at the guards, start maggette and jack, and be absurdly undersized at the forwards too? please, please, no. harrington is not the best player in the nba, but he is a respectable starter, and despite all the remarks on this site, he is not the worst player on the team, and trading him (particularly for a guard) this year will probably make us worse. this situation is not a probably, this trade definitely makes the team worse.

I like Ben Gordon...

They guy is somewhat streaky, but can score in bunches, and he had a bunch of other guys on his squad that could score also. But the fact that he was saying he deserved Loul Deng type money, shows that he has severely overrated himself.

Nellies system has always had a big that can hit from range, the loss of all would not leave us an option of a shooting big. I guess Ronny can hit from 18’, but that’s about it. So I don’t see this helping much.

I’ve been hoping against hope that “system” would fall into the forbidden words for the Warriors this year. Nellie’s “system” seems to be taken to mean “what they’ve done the last two seasons, though this isn’t at all universal for the teams he’s coached. His "system” is to take the pieces he has and make the most fo them by exploiting mismatches. Without a big who shoots from long range (like for most of the RunTMC era) he does something else.

There is nothing wrong with that

the key is the defence and longer bench because IMO the warriors looked fierce when they played their A-defence.The problem was Baron and Jackson can’t play that defence for 38 minutes which made us a soft team which can won only if it shoots lights out.

Helll No!

Ben Gordon isn’t the answer for the Warriors, unless this is just a salary cap move. In that we do not intend to extend Gordon and let him walk after the 08-09 season. By letting Gordon leave via Free Agency we would save the Warriors from having to pay Al’s 10 million dollar salary for 09-10.

I just don’t see Chicago doing this deal. Besides the fact that even if Gordon accepted the one year tender of 6.4 million from Chicago prior to the trade that he’d be making 2.8 million less than Harrington. That’s a 31% difference, just over the maximum allowable difference of 25% in total traded salaries. We’d have to take a player like Aaron Gray or Demetris Nichols who make 700k to bring us under the 25% differential. Again, I don’t see Chicago agreeing to this, nor do I see Gordon accepting this deal without receiving a contract extension.

To me Ben Gordon is a Dale Ellis/Vernon Maxwell type player that hasn’t accepted the fact that he isn’t much more than a gunner from the wing. I’d much rather take a chance on a player like Livingston (who might just sign with Portland) than bring in Gordon for multiple years.

A Sonics fan without a team.. Though I'm auditioning GS Warriors this season.

I like this move

Sets us up to add a big piece next year, getting out from under the $10 million left on Al’s contract. Gordon will help us big-time while Monte is out, and is very moveable as an expiring contract if somebody who can really help us long term becomes available this year.

Al has value, but we aren’t built to win now with or without him. Might as well do this trade IMO, cut some costs and create some more flexibility for the future.

Bad move if we have to take on Gordon long term unless he wants to take a big pay cut, which doesn’t seem likely.

Monte and Gordon is definitely not a backcourt I see working out for us.

the article ruined itself once they said the bulls would be acquiring someone who could push them to the next level. harrington taking the bulls to the next echelon?
i’d like to remind the gsomers that the same source also brought up harrington in a trade rumor for billups, as in straight up. then went on to say that there was no rumor circulating, it was just the writer’s speculation. aside from this i like the idea of clearing up cap space ahead of time, gordon for 6.4 million or whatever is a contract we could trade by the time ellis comes around, look at him as a fillin while ellis is out, and then we open up the frontcourt for some more brandan wright action. i believe this would definitely put us in the driver’s seat in more ways than one.

this would make no sense we have enough guards that love to shoot three’s just like gordon and he is not a point guard im pretty sure the reason we got marcus williams was to have a back up point guard. Plus we still have buike and others to play the wings…. Al can still play, I am not against trading him just trade him for someone worth it.

AL is...

…not going to lead us to anything. I’m being realistic, this year is most likely not going to end with us in the playoffs. so if we are going to end up trading AL after the season, why not do it now for Gordon, esp if we aren’t going to keep gordon around for the 09-10 season. Trust me guys, i’m with you, i don’t like Gordon very much and he is tiny, BUT we’re talking about the DUBS, the team that was 2nd in highest points per game and Gordon is a shooter so he, IMO fits well in our scheme… any thoughts?

by Young Moolah on Sep 17, 2008 2:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

There are several issues with trading Harrington for Gordon. It would require three things to happen: the Warriors showing interest in Gordon and being able to work out a deal that he can agree to and THEN convincing the Bulls that getting back Harrington in a deal is better than letting Gordon hang waiting for a deal.

I don’t have a problem getting rid of Harrington. He’s just not that good a player. He’s rarely actually helped the teams he’s been on and the likelihood of him actually becoming the post presence the team needs, the odds of him being anything more than a piss-poor rebounding tall guy who spots up from beyond the arc is next to zero. Is he totally worthless? No. Is he really a necessary part? Is he close to worth his salary. No.

The problem is getting back Gordon, a good scorer if you look at it in a total vacuum, but a guy who scores by taking a ton of shots and does nothing else for his team. He’s an ideal candidate to play for the Knicks. At the price that it would take to sign him, he’d be as worthless as Harrington, but will require a longer term deal.

The Warriors didn’t have problems scoring points. I’m not sure why you’d then go out and get a guy who only helps in the one department that the Warriors didn’t need help in. Fits the scheme? Maybe, but he doesn’t really do anything new for the team, doesn’t provide something that makes the better than they were as scoring is the ONLY way he helps. Better to think about guys who provide something that the team lacks.

by jae on Sep 17, 2008 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree that Gordon does not provide much diversity, but he could be another dynamic scorer for the Warriors

When Monta comes back the starting line-up will consist of Monta Magette Jackson PF and Beidrins. Gordon would be a great 6th man for the warriors. Monta will definitely not be able to play a heavy load of minutes when he first comes back so a competent scorer off the bench could be very valuable.

In addition Jackson will probably not be resigned when his contract is up. Monta and Gordon although small would be an incredible scoring back court. Magette would complement their games nicely as the SF. A back court of Ellis and Gordon, although not a defensive juggernaut, would be extremely mobile and put up 50-60 pts a night.

Gordon

Great 3 ball shooter. 41% Something the Warriors really don’t have. Great free throw shooter. 90% The poor free throw shooting has really hurt the warriors the last couple of seasons. Career average 3 assists per game. This could possibly be bumped up to maybe 5 a game if he is used more in a point guard capacity. I remember some pretty skilled passes last year watching him on NBA league pass so it is not out of the realm of possibility that he could be a servicable point guard.

by miggyk2 on Sep 17, 2008 5:31 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If Gordon was to get 2 more assists per game as an off guard, this would be good. If he got 2 more a game as a point guard, he’d still be terrible as it’s very, very, very unlikely that he’d make this move and decrease his turnovers at the same time. He doesn’t take good care of the ball and that is a detriment. He’s a good scorer, but that’s only one aspect of the game. It’s a conspicuous one, one that most people focus on first and foremost when evaluating a player, but this tends to result in overpaid, one dimensional players putting up big scoring numbers in losing causes. Gordon isn’t alleged to be a good defender and indeed the Bulls were a better defensive team when he didn’t play, substantially so. Gordon doesn’t rebound well even for his position. He’s a scorer. He shoots the long ball well and he has some ability to get to the line. That alone doesn’t make him close to as valuable as he thinks he is or worth what he’d have to be paid to trade Harrington for him. Let someone else make the mistake of watching him score 25 a night in losing causes, because that’s a not at all unlikely scenario.

by jae on Sep 17, 2008 6:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What makes him less valuable than Monta?

Is it the lack of speed or ability to get to the basket? From what I can see he is slower than Monta, but is still extremely mobile and has the ability to get to the basket. Monta made 60 more free throws than Gordon last year, but Monta also played 10 more games. I don’t think Gordon is as good as I am giving him credit for, but he is better than your perceived notion of how he is as a player. The middle ground is still a solid player.

Eveland rocks! Eveland rocks! Somewhere Drew Carey just smiled.

by miggyk2 on Sep 17, 2008 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Monta hits a higher percentage of his shots, albeit their scoring efficiencies are pretty similar. They’re pretty similar in terms of assists, but Monta turns the ball over less in the process. Monta rebounds better and fouls less often.

If Gordon was better than my perceived notion, this wasn’t apparent in how his team performed with him on the court. That’s a pretty telling measure, as a measure of a player’s value that doesn’t translate into his team doing better with him than without him is a flawed, entirely subjective measure. May as well hold a dance contest at that point.

by jae on Sep 17, 2008 8:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Im not so sure

Not that Gordon is the best choice to trade Harrington for. But more and more, this season is turning into a rebuilding/development year, as much as we all hate to admit it. That being said, getting Wright/ Randolph more time and giving Nellie no other option but to play these guys is not such a bad idea. Now Gordon may not be the best fit for the future, but I think Mullin should see what other pieces he could get for Harrington to help build for next year.

Let’s not get confused people… What we need is Al to step up, what we don’t need is another combo guard. I’m selling this all the way

by mattmonay on Sep 18, 2008 12:16 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I am surprised

If you asked me, this would be a steal of a deal for the Warriors.

And it’s not like I’m the world’s biggest Ben Gordon fan. I’ve criticized his importance many times over at Blog-a-Bull.

Al Harrington has one purpose on the Warriors, and that is shoot the 3 ball. Ben Gordon does that better, and is also a much more dynamic all-round scorer. Offensively, he is a HUGE improvement on Al Harrington.

Defensively, he struggles, but at least he tries. He’s just not big or athletic enough to compensate, but it isn’t for lack of trying— he’s no worse and likely better (because he tries) than guys like Michael Redd, Ray Allen, Barbosa, etc. And his offense is nothing to sneeze at.

THE ONLY PROBLEM, is the matching of salaries and meaning you’d be paying Gordon quite a bit to match Harrington’s overpaidness. And the BYC stuff gunks things up some.

Yeah, where does he fit in? I dunno.

I know if I was a Dubs fan I’d rather have Brandon Wright or Anthony Randolph out there over just-waiting-for-his-deal-to-expire Harrington— especially when playoffs are not the likely goal. You want development, and draft picks.

Gordon is certainly not a PG, but he’s as good of a shooter at SG as you’ll find and able to run as well. He’s a smart player, a better guy than he is being presented as with the contract holdout, and a very efficient scorer for a jump shooter.

If Monta can actually be a PG, it’d be a unique, totally Nelly-esque backcourt, and who knows if it would work. All I know is, he does what Harrington does even better, is younger, can do more offensively, and plays hard.

Talent wise, you’d be winning this sort of trade.

Now, undersized SGs who don’t have PG skills are usually my least favorite players, so again: I ain’t really a huge Ben Gordon fan. But I think his worth is being pooped on a bit by the contract hold out, which is more likely caused by the Bulls jerking him around so many years while telling him they know it doesn’t matter if he comes off the bench— and then using it against him during contract talks.

Harrington is what, entering his 9th season? 10th? What ya see is what ya get. He ain’t stepping up, he is what he is. If you can get actual value for him, you’re coming out ahead.

harrington isn't an all star or anything

but neither is gordon. gordon is a better player in a vacuum than harrington, sure, but he couldn’t play with monta. i just hate the idea of being undersized for no real reason. if we are creating mismatches, great, but when we’re just handing teams free buckets, i’m not interested. if we’re getting gordon in this deal, i want draft picks too. i know it won’t ever happen, because that’s a dumb move for the bulls (in fact this trade to begin with would be), but if we have to give up a starter, i want someone who could start on our team. gordon could start until monta came back, and then we’ve just got an expensive sixth man.

and you’re right about harrington’s job being a simple case of ‘stand behind the arc and shoot’ on offense, and yes, gordon is better at that, but until he can guard a post player, in the way that harrington almost can (not the most ringing endorsement, but stay with me), i just don’t see this as a good idea.

maybe my problem with this trade is that i’m nervous about brandon wright’s ability to start on a good team. he could be the starting pf on a bad team, but that’s not a good way to build a franchise. i just think his ceiling is a below average starting pf. i guess i’m just willing to let harrington stick around for as long as he can outplay wright, and then hope we can land a guy who will outplay wright for years to come. speaking of guys like that, i think earl clarke is the kind of player who is worth a look in next year’s draft. i hate thinking like that, but come on brandon, prove me wrong…

If those patriotic f*cks in Dallas can’t appreciate a free thinking pot smoker who plays both ends of the floor can hit the three is athletic and can rebound and plays hard bring him over here. Plus there’s the Nellie connection- he developed into a star playing for Nellie.
