New Logo in the Works?
According to an article on sfgate.com, the Warriors are considering adopting a new logo that would incorporate the image of the new bay bridge span that is currently being built. What do you guys think? Sounds like a cool improvement over the current logo to me. I was never a big fan of the thunderbolt, and with OKC "stealing our thunder," seems like the time is ripe for a change.
The Golden State Warriors basketball team, often maligned for not identifying its hometown of Oakland in its name, is considering a new uniform design that would incorporate a sketch of the span, much like the classic "The City" uniforms with an image of the Golden Gate Bridge that the team sported as the San Francisco Warriors.

Offtopic, but...
I actually like the fact that the Warriors are the only team whose name isn’t a city or a state. I think it makes us unique that way. It also fun to see how silly the guest broadcasters sound whenever call the Warriors home city as Golden State.

couldn't disagree more
clearly the philosophy behind the “golden state” monicker is to distance the brand from the decidedly poor and ethnic city of oakland. although i am not a resident of oakland, as a warriors fan and bay area native i find this insulting. the fact that the team resides in oakland ads to the appeal to me, and i think incorporating a logo that embraces the community is a much needed step in the right direction. furthermore, i think it’s pretty clear that most people are unhappy with the esthetics of the warrior’s logo/unis. change it!
I'm keen on the professional basketball club The Golden State Warriors. I don't fancy other clubs.

It’s not to distance itself away from the “poor and ethnic city of Oakland,” as much as it is to market to a broader region. How many of you guys would go from San Jose or places an hour or two away if you considered it Oakland? I think Golden State is just to appeal to a broader fanbase.

agreed
it’s not about the physical area they are in – it’s about fanbase..plus golden state is just a classic name, if not one of the best city names for a team. I mean it may not be california’s team, but at least it’s not the golden state lakers..
would love to see the bay bridge on the uni though

Not on the street. I only get positive remarks about my Warriors gear. I’m more interested in winning some games than the fine points of the logo but I do like the current lightening bolt, reminds me of a classic 20’s era logo. Golden State( of mnid, no less) is a perfect name for a team representing the most unique area in the states.

My philosophy
Well I think that at this point, we’ve got to be called the Oakland Warriors, cause the Raiders and A’s definitely aren’t giving the town a better name (although I personally think it’s not really the Raiders fault, you fans out there no what I mean, f*ck the refs!!!).

I just think that it’s ridiculous to be called the Golden State W’s when there are three other teams from the Golden State. I personally think Bay Area Warriors would be hella sick. It’s still not a city or a state, so we still stand out. And yet, it represents our area and community well.

The San Francisco Warriors didn’t play all their home games in San Francisco. They played some in San Jose and Oakland. When they became the Golden State Warriors in 71-72, they played most of their games in Oakland but even played a bunch of home games in San Diego.

About changing the name:
Golden State is unique in that it represents more than just one city, but I only support this idea for teams that are alone in their state such as Minnesota or Utah. California has 4 teams so its more fitting to have teams that represent their city. Either Oakland or Bay Area would be an improvement in my eyes.
About the logo:
I think using the Bay Bridge will be great assuming the artwork looks good. The Golden Gate has more history to it and was really cool on the “city” uniforms, but in reality the bay bridge is used way more by the bay area community.

A Bay Bridge would be perfect
Basically symbolizes the Bay Area and how all the cities in it are all connected as one. It would be great to have a bridge as a logo, as long as it doesn’t look corny. It would be hard to get a respectable jersey/logo like the classic ones that the team had in previous eras; a lot of people tend to dislike how new jersey modifications look nowadays.

i’m all for those jerseys, but i think calling the team the bay “area” warriors is kind of lame. maybe call them the east bay warriors, but then people in the rest of the bay are left out. and i think that going with the bay warriors wouldn’t sound right either. so, maybe bay area is the best call, but i just don’t like having the word “area” in the name of a team. either way, let’s get those jerseys for next year. we can figure out a name later.

Zzzzzzzzz. They all stink. This isn’t geography or political science class. Golden State Warriors is poetic, mysterious, classic, and beautiful. Ditto for the C I T Y. Why force everything to be so literal?
Also, I like your idea of the bridge look more like the Bay Bridge (new or old), but why show it foreshortened like that? It’s a flat logo on a jersey, not an actual porthole from an actual boat on the Bay. A good logo (the Yankees’ NY, the Giants’ SF, the Bulls’ Bull, the Cowboys’ star, the Warriors THE CITY, e.g.) has a kind of static, 2D purity and integrity ; it shouldn’t have to pretend that it’s flying through a wind tunnel, or vanishing towards the horizon, or glowing, or casting a shadow.
Also, last I checked, #23 was a Bobcat…

The Warriors should...
I’m in favor of Oakland Warriors but since this IS THE basketball team for SJ, OAK, SF and all the way out to Stockton I think the Bay Area Warriors would be the best.
I think they should keep the current color scheme and maybe add white since the new Bay Bridge is white/silver/grey.
I would love to go back to blue/gold but too many teams have that color pallet now,.

yeah it did
the thing that it was most proud of is what killed it. it got to mainstream. It was great here cause it was our only thing than everyone started singing and dubbed it down so much. The crazy thizzing going hyphy music turned into what everything is starting to sound like. thats why im only still playing the old early 00 to mid 90’s stuff. Come on NELLY is on Bay music now. MAC DRE in the words of Charles Barkley is rolling over in his grave.

I was reading an article on how Bay Area radio stations killed it as well...
Big Von from … umm, shoot I dont even know what station didn’t wanna play local artists… but its kinda sad, you think the Bay would embrace the talent than limit it… I’m sure there are a lotta wack artists out there, but I won’t get into that. (They’re all on myspace LOL!)

Hyphy was never "Too Mainstream".
It really was never mainstream in the first place. The only real Hyphy track out there nationwide was “Tell Me When To Go”.
It was all just bad decision making by the Bay Area. E-40 put a whack rapper (Keak Da Sneak) on his single and it killed the song for most people not from the Bay; it would have been better if E-40 gave the 2nd verse to someone like Mistah FAB. No disrespect to Keak though, cause he is the originator of the term “Hyphy”; but just because you started something doesn’t mean you’re one of the best at it.
Other artists didn’t put out their best songs that year either. We weren’t giving the world our best when we had the perfect opportunity to do so. Everyone had their ears on the Bay Area back in 2006 and they ended up thinking that the only good rappers we have here are E-40, Too $hort and Keak Da Sneak.
In 2007, there was a lack of Hyphy music in the mainstream. E-40 did his job by giving the Bay nationwide attention in ‘06, and now it was the other artist’s jobs to continue the movement. Instead, they decided to go a different route. The Federation and The Frontline are both known as groups that make bangin tracks… they had a chance to come onto the national scene with some crazy Hyphy songs that could carry on the hype from “Tell Me When To Go”. Instead, the two groups come out with LOVE SONGS as their first singles. They’re known as Hyphy artists but they come out with generic love tracks in a weak attempt to fit in with the mainstream; it would have been better to come out with the songs who made them who they are.
The Pack did good with their “Vans” track. Unfortunately, MTV refused to put the song into their rotation because they felt that it was somewhat of a “free advertisement” song and that the Vans company would have to pay to have that type of “marketing” on their network. The thing that bugged me with The Pack is that they barely put any songs out their to promote their next album. They only made one music video for their ‘Based Boys’ album, and didn’t put out anything else after. The song they made a music video for (“In My Car”) wasn’t even that great either, they had MUCH better songs on the album that could have been big hits.
And yes, Tony. Big Von of 106.1 KMEL did contribute to the “demise” of Hyphy. Back in 2006, the radio was full of Bay Area music. After that, Big Von stopped playing a lot of the tracks and started having beef with a local rap artist by the name of Mistah FAB. FAB is one of the Bay’s hottest rappers right now, and he didn’t even get his songs played on KMEL because Von didn’t like him. Snoop Dogg’s “Life Of the Party” was a hit song nationwide, yet Von didn’t spin the track on the radio just because of the fact that Mistah FAB was on the hook.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ai7ASY3HWCw
Since 2007, KMEL has been different. Whenever people come to the Bay from places like New York, Atlanta, Texas etc, they feel right at home because KMEL plays a bunch of mainstream songs. It’s not like back then when people would visit the Bay and get a crazy vibe on the radio that they’re not accustomed to.
The future of the Hyphy Movement and Bay Area Music is still good, though. We have a bunch of artists on the come up.
Mistah FAB, Ya Boy and Clyde Carson are my big three to go mainstream. All three have the talent to be some of the best in the rap game. Once they go big, people will give attention to the Bay and it will open the door for other rappers/groups like San Quinn, Big Rich, Messy Marv, The Frontline, The Federation, The A’z, Bailey, etc. to come up and do big.
Mistah FAB had a chance to go big in 2007. His song “Ghost Ride It”. He had a music video for it and everything, but it was quickly banned since the owners of the sample of the song got mad. Ever since then, Fab’s album is on delay.
But yeah, what I basically mean is that the movement was never at it’s best in the first place. There’s still more to come.

That was a good read.
I don’t particularly like hyphy because its rather shallow music. It’s all the same thing over a different beat and different lyrics. It’s too bad Mac Dre was murdered, he should’ve gotten more recognition than he received. He’s pretty much the only Bay Area rapper i like (though i do like early Too $short).
Also, is there THAT much difference between 94.9 and 106? Aren’t they owned by the same umbrella company (Clear Chanel)?

They are both under Clear Channel and play similar music but their target audiences are different. KMEL is more older and African American while WILD is younger and Hispanic-American. Also WILD plays some really poppy mainstream stuff randomly like Britney, Jesse McCartney (sp?), Maroon 5, and whoever that I kissed a girl singer is.
Anyways, very good read. I also read the article that Big Von basically blacklisted FAB and had beef w/ some promoters or something. I guess they figured why would other cities play Hyphy music if their own local station won’t even play them.

hmm
i never thought about it that way and that makes more sense. i do think though alot of what was suppose to be main stream that came out turned out to be music that didnt really represent or was not their best songs. which is why i think it turning mainstream helped it die well dying. it could come back up but at this point with the direction music is going i think all forms of hip hop/rap is dying.

Seriously though the reason the hyphy movement...
The hyphy movement didn’t go mainstream because frankly the music sucked and got irritating QUICK.
It was/is obnoxious beats and stupid REPETITIVE lyrics delivered by an obnoxious voice that you could barely understand.
You can only take so much of it and I think the rest of the nation just about had it.
I don’t mind when hyphy music hits the club, but you won’t find it on my iPOD or what i’d want to listen to on the radio.

Maybe for you and most others...
Sucked for you but it shouldn’t bring folks down for trying to start it. Here’s something I just realized… I work 7 days a week, I have a day job as a Graphic designer that works my 40+ hours. On the weekends and even when I get home from work I still work as a contract/freelance designer… One thing I LOVE about my profession is the opportunity to rock music out 7 days a week via my ipod… sound sticks, etc.
That’s a lotta music… I love all sorts too… East, west, Dirty, old school, 90’s Hip-Hop NYC, old school Gangsta Rap, Electronic, break beat, East/West Underground… shoot my ipod racks out singles from Arabian Prince to Company Flow, MF Doom to Lil’ Wayne all the way down to Onyx and Mobb Deep…
I never gave love to bay Area music… I had homies sharing practically their entire Bay Area collection to me and I still didn’t give them any love… Last month I was rockin The Click’s “Down and Dirty” album and realized how raw and special had with its vibe… I recollected past mp3’s the homies handed out and traded A LOT of crappy dvd’s just so I could get down with fresh new music in my iPOD… I just got back from Rasputins in Vallejo and picked up Keak Da Sneaks new joint thats hot… The Luniz 1st album, Spice 1’s “187 he wrote” and a slur of other dope pieces…
Not to say I feel like I’m jumping on the bandwagon… like you I labeled Bay Area music as a joke… but with the rise in quality thanks to some Dirty South heads like T.I. and UGK, their swagger sort of rubbed off on me to look at other music options… shoot, The East Coast and sad to say the West in general haven’t been dishing solid hits…
There’s a huge subculture of Bay Area Hip-Hop I’m so down to listen to… the older I get, I wanna see the whole picture

It's not a matter of whether or not Hyphy music "sucked"
As all of us may already know, many WHACK rappers can go mainstream and become SUCCESSFUL.
Whack rappers like Soulja Boy, Shawty Lo, Hurricane Chris etc. are getting decent-to-great success in the mainstream rap scene, while the Bay Area is struggling to even get their BEST rappers the same success.
If all these lyrically weak rappers from Atlanta, Texas, etc. come up big, then why can’t artists in the Bay Area do the same?
Like I mentioned earlier, with the Bay Area artists who have tons of talent, it’s just a matter of whether or not they know how to make use of it and not screw up. The thing with Hyphy, though, is that it’s on a whole crazier and different level than other music. The slang and terms used in the Bay are too foreign for people listening to our songs. When people outside the Bay listened to our mainstream songs, they couldn’t really “relate”. The “Tell Me When To Go” music video even had to go through a re-edit because the original vid was too crazy and had to be sugar coated and watered down for TV. I guess the music was too regional back then, but the rappers here still have tons of talent and potential to go big. I can understand why you don’t like the music, though.

haha
Yeah thanks, man. I wasn’t trying to really put out too much stuff, since the Hyphy Movement “dying” is a topic that I always come across on the internet. I just rushed through that post since i’ve had to make countless explanations like that on several forums and got tired of always having to say the same thing on different sites. But i’ll try to add on anyways…
I’m not sure about the Hyphy Movement, but I know that Bay Area music in general still has a great chance of becoming relevant in the mainstream music scene. To put things into better perspective, just look at the Bay Area musicians as the Golden State Warriors.
E-40 = Baron Davis
Too $hort = Jason Richardson
Keak Da Sneak = Stephen Jackson
Mistah Fab = Monta Ellis
Clyde Carson = Andris Biedrins
Ya Boy = Anthony Randolph/Brandan Wright
You’re probably thinking “WTF?” right now, but it’s whatever. Basically what I mean by this comparison is this:
The Bay Area was always overlooked in the NBA because of our consecutive years of suck. Baron Davis, Jason Richardson and Stephen Jackson changed that when they led the Warriors to the playoffs in 2007 . The Warriors had the nation’s SPOTLIGHT on them as they proved what great of a team they were, eliminating the Mavericks in the first round. Baron Davis, along with J-Rich, finally made the Warriors a relevant name/team that year.
What Baron, Jason, and Stephen did with the Warriors is very similar to what happened with the Hyphy Movement. Look at what E-40 and Too $hort did for the Bay in 2006. “Tell Me When to Go” put the national hip hop/rap SPOTLIGHT on the Bay Area, as the whole world got to witness the Hyphy Movement and gave us attention here in the Bay. The Bay Area became relevant in music as a place with a different sound and style. It was like the music equivalent to the Warriors finally getting a playoff berth.
Fast forward to 2008, and now Baron Davis and Jason Richardson are gone. But just because they are not a part of our team anymore, would you say that the Warriors are DEAD forever? Most of you would say that the team is not dead, since we still have Monta Ellis, Andris Biedrins and Anthony Randolph for the future.
Just like the Warriors, the Hyphy Movement’s big dogs (E-40 and Too $hort) are getting old, and many people outside the Bay have probably heard enough of them since they’ve been in the game for so long. Would you say that the Hyphy Movement is dead now? Many of you would say that it is, but I say it’s still alive; we have artists out here like Mistah Fab, Clyde Carson, The Federation etc. along with producers like Traxamillion, Rick Rock, EA Ski, Droop-E etc. that are up and coming musicians. And as a plus, we have guys other great artists like Ya Boy who aren’t Hyphy, but they rep the Bay to the fullest and will all put the spotlight back on us.
So I just basically mean that the Hyphy Movement isn’t dead, because we still have a great group of guys for our future. Same with the Warriors, we lost Baron and J-Rich, but we’re not dead because we got a great future in Monta, Andris, Randolph and company.
======
Like I mentioned earlier, I have a “Big Three” that i’m confident will do great in the mainstream music scene: Mistah Fab, Clyde Carson and Ya Boy. When those artists come out with their music, people will keep an open ear on the Bay; this opens the door for more Bay Area artists like The A’z, San Quinn, Big Rich, The Jacka, The Frontline, Turf Talk, Bailey, Dem Hoodstarz, etc. to come up a little more easily. It’s just a matter of timing and decision making. The Bay Area has A LOT of talent, it’s just a matter of whether or not they know how to make use of it and not screw up.

Earth, Wind and Fire.
Damn that reminds me. Last season I had like the perfect name for our “Big Three”.
We had “Run TMC” with Tim, Mitch and Chris.
With Baron, Monta and Stephen… we could have named them “Earth, Wind and Fire”.
Think about it, Baron is a hard body like a rock (Earth), Monta is as fast as the WIND, and Stephen brings that emotional intensity and FIRE. That seemed like a perfect nickname to me but no one else was really feelin it.

It’s solid, I can really dig it! When Fab and Keak were droppin mad tracks and albums between 2004-07 I didn’t know where to begin, they had so many independent releases. Since Keak is signed to Koch records I decided to start clean and the album is solid…
There’s a remix to “That Go” that features Prodigy of Mobb Deep and Alchemist… it’s off the chain. Everything else has a distinct Bay Area feel.

All it takes is one listen to ‘Da Baydestrian’ to see exactly where FAB’s head is at. Cash in on the unfortunate death of Mac Dre and drive Hyphy further into the ground on a national level.

Yeah I know
I can see where you’re coming from. I don’t really like Keak’s flow, though. In my opinion, Mistah FAB is more lyrical and has more talent to become more of a universal rapper than just regional. But like I said, I still respect Keak; he’s the originator of Hyphy and has made a ton of hits in the bay, he’s a legend here.

Also,
With Mistah FAB, he has some cons as well. The things that he’s done recently have gotten me upset with him. He’s stepping furthermore into mainstream, which is good, but at the same time he’s getting a little worse. I’m still confident that he won’t screw up, though.
FAB was just a regional rapper, and got his name out nationwide later on. He could have came up onto the mainstream music scene as a humble rapper with skill, but ever since his battle with Royce he’s become cocky as hell.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCLCRYWetqA
That’s Mistah FAB freestyling with Royce. At the time, no one really knew about FAB, and he was an underdog or whatever. Think of it like Monta Ellis in the Rookie-Sophomore game, when no one really knew who Monta was and he ended up putting on a a great show.
But yeah, FAB put on a great performance there, and people started liking him because of it. Everyone was all like, “This Mistah FAB guy is pretty good”. It was good for FAB’s rep and for most people, a good first impression. The part where FAB ruined it is when he later made a diss track towards Royce. FAB was feelin himself too much and felt like he was on top of the world just because of that battle. Royce ended up making a response to the diss track, and embarrassed FAB.
Now there’s a lot of people outside the Bay that hate on FAB because he’s “Too cocky”. This results in FAB becoming more serious and he stopped doing all those club tracks, since he wanted to be more serious to show everyone how good he really is. It’s good that his mindset is focused, but he seems like a different rapper now, and he’s trying too hard to be more lyrical. I liked him when he was more down to Earth and fun with his songs. It’s whatever though, random rant.

Nah, I can dig that. I can also dig you not liking Keak’s flow, although it seems that if most people don’t like him it’s because of his smokey voice.
My problem with FAB lies directly with how many Mac Dre tracks he remixes and ruins. That’s my problem with bay rap in general, lately. Leave the legend alone, build your own career. Stop piggy backin’.
For reference, check out the cd “Dre Day – July 5th 1970”. They just took all of his great old songs (Since ‘84, Feelin’ Myself, Giggin’, On Da’ Run) remixed them poorly, and just dropped meaningless vapid verses on them.
Also, FAB cried on a track. I instantly lost respect for him after that.

when warriors games are on tv, their initials next their score is “GS.” If they change their name to the Bay Area Warriors, they could display their intials as “BAY.”

where is the city logo as an option.
The warriors text for the front also as the lightning bolt above it. How long ago did we stop using that. Its still somethin to have a lil fun with. They just need to update the version a lil bit. Ahh shading and different fonts to the text.

I'd be happy with getting rid of THUNDER AND HIS LOGO!
Since i’m from San Fran.,I’d Want the ’’City’’ Logo. The only recent jersey of the Warriors i like was when C. Webb was playin’ for us.The White and Blue ones

the WARRIORS
GOLDEN STATE does not give the meaning of the logo and jersey and mascot…
WARRIORS are the operative part of the title here.
I’m thinking a staggered row of ICBMs tipped with nuclear weapons. Perhaps a fatigues look with epaulettes, stars, and medals. Hell, we could give the players RANKS.
Captain Stephen Jackson
Specialist Marco Bellinelli
Sniper Anthony Morrow
Aw, just go ahead and give them firearms and be done with it.
What? The Washington what? Seriously? The Bullets? For years? And they just let them keep using that name? In DC? Well, never mind.

You guys talking about hyphy
need to recognize that in the long run, the Bay Area scene will be remembered for legends like Hieroglyphics and Blackalicious, not watered down repetitive trendy hyphy stuff like E-40 and Mistah F.A.B. Not saying that Too $hort and Mac Dre won’t also live down in Bay Area history, but we have veritable legends in Hieroglyphics in their prime and people are talking about 2006’s radio mainstays E-40 and Keak Da Sneak. They’ve already been forgotten.

Actually...
E-40’s been around just as long as E-40. I grew up loving groups like Hiero, Pharcyde, (had 2 throw that in :) Hobe Junction, Too $hort, Blackalicious, even San Jose mainstays like Dave Dubb, Megabusive and Encore (milpitas!) Back than I was the biggest hater on groups like The Click and acts like Celly Cell… while Hyphy has become a fad… the Bay is filled with some incredible talent on top of what you and I have named above…
Old school heads will recognize acts like Soul and Gift of Gab no doubt, it’s a shame kids these days just don’t know… :-(

Do you think the new logo should have elements of the new bridge span?
Whether or not it’s something like this?
