GSoM Fantasy Hoops is here!

I had 5 minutes to kill so I went ahead and created the fantasy league for this year. Just like last year, it's the salary cap league on SportingNews.com and it's all free.

http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/hoops/season1/basic/home.html

Create a team name then go to "join an existing league":

League name:  Golden State of Mind                                                                    Password: 1975

Since it's a salary cap league, there's no exclusive ownership of players which means there's no draft. We can all have Kobe if we want to. Also, there is no real limit to how many people can join the league since an infinite number of people can own any given player.

You start with $35 million to buy 6 players: 2 guards, 2 forwards, 1 center and 1 "6th man" (which means  the player can play any position). You have to maintain that type of roster all season (w/ those positions, not the exact players I mean). Some players have multiple positions they can play on your roster (G/F or F/C).

Players' values go up and down during the season based on how many people are buying and selling them, like the stock market. Players earn fantasy points through points, boards, assists, etc.  and most points wins the league, regardless of franchise value.

You get two trades every, I think, Tuesday night. The trades aren't actually trades you complete with other members of the league; a trade is really a right to sell a player and replace him by buying another.

Season 1 ends at the All-Star break and then season 2 goes from after the break until the playoffs. Hope some people join this year. Last season was hella fun.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Captain Jax

Bless his soul, is not a very good fantasy player. Too many missed shots, not enough boards, assists, blocks, or steals.

Biedrins, on other hand, is Fantasy money in the bank. If he plays more than 30 minutes a game (as he almost surely will) he’s almost a guaranteed 30-50 TSN Fantasy points. And he’s a good way to build your team value, as he’s almost certain to be undervalued relative to his production.

So, just of curiosity

Who won the Fantasy League the half-season after I retired (with my three straight GSoM Fantasy crowns)?

If that person identifies himself and talks a little friendly trash to me, I might be sufficiently motivated to come out of retirement, Jordan style, and go after three more titles.

Alternately, I’ll just enjoy me free time and give free Fantasy advice to anyone who requests it… ;-)

Hey guys

Im kinda new here, lurked around for a while. I recently joined this fantasy league and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for a newbie

by Andrew7744 on Sep 28, 2008 1:32 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Tip #1: Pick LeBron.

I don’t care how much he costs: pinch your pennies elsewhere. He’s a 100-TSN-point threat every game, and he’ll instantly put you ahead of all the cheap saps who didn’t pick him.

(N.B. unless the Cavs have a really light schedule the first few weeks…)

Picked Lebron, but

Wouldn’t having two dudes with higher combination stats then him work better?

by Andrew7744 on Sep 28, 2008 4:33 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

If you can find those two guys, sure...

.. but that’s the tough part. My sense is that, generally speaking, it’s better to sign as many sure-thing blue chippers (LeBron, Wade, CP3, Howard, e.g.) as you can afford, and fill in around the edges with well-chosen bargain bin guys.

Who are the two dudes you were thinking of replacing LeBron with?

by Sleepy Freud on Sep 28, 2008 6:07 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Ehh.. Nvm

Lebron and some other dude have better stats then two mid range guys. ( I was thinking about Corey/Ron Artest, but then I threw in a 3 million dollar chump and it balanced out.

So what do you think of this line up

G-Marcus
G-Granger
F-James
F- Ryan Gomes
C- Biedrins
6th- J.R Smith

by Andrew7744 on Sep 28, 2008 6:49 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh and Also

If J.R gets the start in Denver Im thinking of moving him to the guard position and Marcus down if he doesn’t do to well.

by Andrew7744 on Sep 28, 2008 6:59 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Marcus seems like a fantastic pick

Almost a guaranteed starter at PG for the next three months or do, and likely to pick up a ton of dimes and steals in the breakneck pace of Nellieball. What’s his pricetag?

I hated JR Smith the one time I “owned” him. He scored, but that’s all he did — very few assists or rebounds or steals, and tons of missed shots. I’d throw him back in the bin and poke around some more.

Gomes, Granger seem solid, and Beans at $6-7M (I’m guessing) could be a total steal. Out of curiosity, how much is Andrew Bynum going for?

Don't mess with ^^^^ !!

by Sleepy Freud on Sep 28, 2008 7:18 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Prices...

Marcus is 4.25 Million
Beans is at 7 million
Bynum is at 7.20 million I could pick him up because I have .45 million dollars in excess cash.
Meh, Ill go poke around for someone at 2 million then. I actually think Granger will be a steal because his the main scorer now.

Weren’t me, but are you gonna sit by and let the skeptic win? How about jae? Can he put all those stats to productive use humbling us peons?

LOL

I just changed it up. My roster is different. I picked up James instead of Kobe. And Harrington, Jefferson, and Diawara are switched with new players.

sleepy??

how does this look? First timer fantasy player

G.) Peja stojakovic 4.50 mil
G.) Rodney Stuckey 2.50 mil
F.) Lebron James 12.20 mil
F.) BEANS 7.0 mil
C.) Andrew Bynum 7.20 mil
6.) Luther Head 1.25 mill

by cjwatson23 on Sep 28, 2008 10:11 PM PDT   0 recs

Well...

I don’t wanna take away all the fun. I think Marcus Williams is probably a better value than Peja, because his upside is so great, and he racks up assists, but who knows: your namesake CJ Watson could win the job, and then I’d have egg all over my face, and I’d feel guilty.

Also it’s silly of me to say anything without looking at the schedule. It seems wrong, but Fantasy success is often less a result of who you pick than when you pick ’em. LeBron, for example, is a probably not a good pick if his team is only playing 2 games in the upcoming week.

Here’s a couple of previous GSoM Fantasy League discussions, including some long winded answers by me:

http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/story/2007/2/16/1147/98306

(Looking back at the first Fantasy League, I was reminded that I picked up Andrew Bynum for $1M (!!!) when our own POB was going for $2M. That’s what I mean by “well-chosen bargain bin guys.” The trick is to find this year’s version of the 06/07 Biedrins or Bynum…)

Partially depends on the playing time split =between Williams and CJWatson? Keep an eye on the preseason games.
