Monta Ellis' Career in Jeopardy
http://cohn.pressdemocrat.com/default.asp?item=2258557&mode=
Lowell Cohn interviewed a sports doctor, who requested anonymity, on Monta Ellis' injury. His analysis was a bit bleak.
Zohn: The Warriors are saying he'll be playing in three months. Is that realistic?
Doc: I don't believe so. Based on the little I've read, to play at an NBA level in three months is very unrealistic. He has a long road ahead of him.
The doctor gets more specific about the injury.
Zohn: Give an example of how someone could tear the ligament.
Doc: You're walking along and you put your foot in a grate. The grate is stable and doesn't move. You fall sideways. It would take that kind of fall to do it.
Zohn: Are you skeptical Ellis tore the deltoid ligament playing basketball?
Doc: Yes.

Isolated medial ankle sprains are relatively uncommon, with most deltoid injuries occurring in combination with lateral malleolus fractures or syndesmosis injuries.10 However, isolated injury to the deltoid ligament can occur during an eversion injury in which the body rolls over an everted foot. The anterior fibers of the deltoid are most commonly injured.

Where does it say Monta's career is in jeopardy?
All it says is that a doctor thinks he’ll probably be out more than 3 months, which we kind of knew already.
Then there’s the fact that the injury doesn’t seem consistent with normal hoops activity, which has been rumored from day one, and was reported by Marc Stein a couple of days ago.
So I’m guessing the point of this diary and its absurdly sensationalist title is to get a rise out of people and pimp the author’s amateurish and unpopular blog. Not that that should surprise GSoMers, given the source… ;-)

It says it right here
Doc: Under the best circumstances to repair the deltoid ligament to a perfect orientation and length is difficult. The difficulty is compounded by rehabilitation where you try to return it some some flexibility. Ellis could get a stiff ankle or a tight ankle. When he tries to pivot he might stumble. He might not be able to push off as much or accelerate or explode to dunk. He might not be as explosive as he is now — his game is based on super quickness and acceleration. I am not saying he’s through. But this is a bad injury.
He’s saying it’s questionable, from a medical perspective, that monta will ever be able to regain the explosiveness his game relied upon. So, while his career may not be in jeopardy (depending on your definition/expectation of a career), his ability to regain last year’s form, let alone the prospects that he’ll fulfill his potential and his contract are very much in jeopardy.

Still don't see it.
Assuming this doctor — the one doctor whose opinion you got — is reputable, he or she still doesn’t say his career is in jeopardy. If Monta were your brother or best friend, would you post the same alarmist headline about him? My guess is that you’re exaggerating to provoke people and get blog hits. If that’s not your goal, my apologies. Only you know for sure.

Yeah
Mostly I’m pissed ’cos the whole story depresses me.
But I do think you really have to be careful when you say things like “career in jeopardy.” I think at this point all we can say is something like “pretttay prettayyy prettayyyyy bad … possibly even career-affecting.”
I wouldn’t really mind the author’s hyperbole if the same dude weren’t famous on this board for his similarly exaggerated, inflammatory comments about Kevin Love and Andris Biedrins. Just ‘cos it’s “only a blog” doesn’t mean we all shouldn’t try to be as reasonable as possible when we write stuff. The injury seems prettayyyy bad. We’ll see how bad in the coming months. For now, chill.

I think this site has always had a socio-political bent. Normally the political topics touch on hoops (the Spanish team photo, Tim Hardaway’s gay comments, e.g.) but I think now the election is so close and the stakes so high that people don’t feel the need to make a sports connection. Plus, one of the two leading candidates is known as a pretty mean hoopster (if a terrible bowler…)
As long as people are civil, I don’t really see the problem. Personally, I find it encouraging that people are passionate enough that they wanna talk about it. And if people wanna talk up the party of enlightened modernist values over the party of theocracy, jingoism, fear, fetus worship, greed, war, and torture, all the better… ;-)

Ralph Nader 2008. Time to stop voting for the two parties that are owned by corporate greed and wealth. TIme to stop voting for the two parties that are composed of representatives of the lobbyists and not the people. Time to stop voting for the two parties that have and continue to knowingly bankrupt the people of this country. If you think Obama is going to bring change that matters, you just have to ask yourself something. If he is going to bring a serious change, not just a change from bush, cuz anyone except mccain will do that, but a serious change, do you think the corporate media and the corporations would be dumping their time, resources, and money into Obama. I know everyone is stoked for a Black President. But what good is a Black President if he’s in the same club as all the White Presidents. Vote for REAL CHANGE. Nader 2008

It’s a matter of degree. Nader will draw votes from the democrats who are a lot better than the republicans when it comes to social and working class issues. The next president will probably appoint some supreme court judges who will be deciding our freedoms till they die. Do you want the christian rightwing to dictate the morality for everyone? Look what a conservative religious government has done for Iraq, Iran, etc. Ignorance is not pretty despite what they try to tell us about Palin.

I'm with you...
In spirit. Kind of. I also live in the real world. What good is a “reform” candidate who’s gonna be lucky to get 0.2% of the vote?
The differences between Obama and McCain are huge, not just in terms of their domestic policies and relationship to the corporate oligarchy, but in terms of their whole world view. I don’t even think we can comprehend what a huge boost to the world an Obama presidency could be. I read a blog post the other day by an American in India who related the following conversation with a local (paraphrased):
— You American?
— Yes.
— Bush? (scowling..)
— No, no, no Bush … Obama!
— Obama, yes!! (beaming)
His point was that there is a totally inexplicable love for Obama in the world right now, which — whatever his actual policies — could reap immeasurably huge rewards in terms of world cooperation and harmony.
It actually saddens me that someone who believes in progressive values wouldn’t vote Obama. Yeah, California’s almost certainly going to vote for him, so if you wanna make a “protest” vote, I guess it won’t make much of difference (though I have no idea why anyone would vote for a self-important jerk like Nader). But come on, man: unless you’re a fundamentalist Christian or a hardcore Republican, Obama 2008. It shouldn’t even be a question.

Not at all
I’m a progressive liberal. But I’m not voting for Obama. I don’t believe in playing the game. I vote for the candidate that most represents my own beliefs and ideas. Im not voting for some one just to keep some one else out of office. Nader would pull out of Iraq in 6 months, he would raise taxes on the rich more so than Obama, and unlike Obama, he would push for a health care system that doesnt rely on the crooked business of insurance companies. Plus unlike Obama and even more unlike McCain, he doesn’t take money from corporations that have ruined the middle class and the poor worldwide, also many of these companies endorsed Bush as well. Is B.O. playing them or us, I hope its them, but im not betting on it. I also dont feel that this race is very close, dont trust polls. Plus the Electoral College decides the president, not the people. So until there is no E.C. are votes dont matter except to remind us we arent in control. Gore won the popular vote in 2000, not president.

ok then
if the post is about Obama’s bball skills (severely over-hyped according to a military buddy of mine who played with him)I’m more than happy to discuss. I doubt we can keep political debate civil. As a strong supporter of McCain who has been less than thrilled with the way our country has been governed for the last few years but believes the safety of America and all its citizens comes first (shockingly even before even the economy!) and someone who feels the federal government should play a limited role in day to day lives and would rather kill criminals than unborn children I’m more than happy to take the onslaught of insults and smarky self righteous comments this is sure to inspire from the “enlightened” bay area crowd, but why do we need to create divisions and conflict when I’m more than happy to talk hoops and cheer on anyone in a blue and gold jersey with any of you regardless of the fact that you may go back to blaming the government and anyone who has found success for all your personal problems later. ;-)
P.S. John McCain is probably Washington’s strongest opponent of torture, so at least try to keep the facts straight rather than just repeat the Democratic talking points a la Olbermann and Matthews.

Well, that was pretty civil, Sam Samwise ;-)
A little cranky, but not intolerable.
Actually, I think sports blogs can be one of the best places to discuss political and social issues — civilly — as they generally contain a pretty decent cross section of views. Much better than the echo chambers you get on tend to get on DailyKos or (pick rightwing blog of your choice).
The Red Sox chatroom has a great political subforum that has the full gamut of viewpoints, including some way to the right of you, and it hardly ever descends into flaming, because people tend to have thick skins and not to take or intend things personally. Why be afraid of opposing views? I think as long as you keep the discussion focused on the issues and candidates, and not on the person you’re chatting with, it’s perfectly easy to have a good, fruitful discussion. I actually feel like I better understand the right-wing philosophy from my occasional visits in there. And from some of my prickly interactions there and on GSoM, I’ve learned to be more careful about my tone to avoid hurt feelings.
In the spirit of discussing the issues not the poster: McCain basically terrifies me. For sure he’s the least loathsome Republican on the torture issue (I saw one early Repub debate where he was he only candidate in the bunch who didn’t come out in support of torture), and he has a pretty good history of bi-partisan work (McCain-Feingold, e.g.) but in recent years he seems to have gone down the tubes, mentally, physically, and morally. Any remaining hopes I had that he was a sane and reasonable person went out the window at that religious forum a couple of weeks ago. The clenched jaw and the gleam in his eye when he talked about “chasing Osama to the gates of hell” scared the crap out of me. It’s the same juvenile mix of righteousness and revenge fantasy I see in W … only possibly more worrisome ‘cos McCain’s not quite as much of an idiot as W. It’s no wonder most people around the world think we’re the world’s most dangerous country.
To paraphrase Obama’s answer to the same terror question, “you have to confront evil, but you also have to be humble … a lot of evil has been done in the name of good.”
From a broader perspective, I guess the fundamental difference we have is where you care first about the safety of Americans, I kinda care more about the safety of everyone in the world. I honestly think the whole concept of “terrorism” and of “defeating” it is basically a joke. I’d rather export peace, technology, food and education than suffering and destruction disguised as “freedom.” When people have food, education, and hope, they tend not to kill each other much. And while we’re educating, feeding and enlightening, the occasional whackjob (Timothy McVeigh, Bin Laden and his minions, whoever) takes out a few innocents, what can you do, really? Just as with any horrible crime, you punish the offenders, and move on. I refuse to let a few random nutjobs drag the entire world back into the middle ages.
Ugh, that sounded pretty juvenile, didn’t it? I’m simplifying a ton; and I think I left enough holes in my rant for a smart rightwinger to drive a Hummer through, if s/he so chose. Feel free … or, you know, just stick to Obama’s hoops skillz. I don’t know how hyped or overhyped or underhyped he is as a player, but I’m fairly certain he could school his creaky old stiff of an opponent…

I commend you for your thick skin, but in my experience the nature of politics gets people so riled up its nearly impossible for cooler heads to prevail in any debate for very long. I think youre the exception. Knowing the limited range of my temper when it comes to politics I’ll save my response for another day. I know the previous post came off a bit cranky, but I’m currently slightly infuriated by the blatant tactics of the “unbiased” MSNBC gang and their pundits and the inability of most of their “fair and balanced” counterparts on Fox to present a counterargument with sounding bitter or hypocritical and just as biased. I dont wish to make and enemy of someone whose opinions I respect most on this site simply because we have ideological differences that are relatively small on the bigger spectrum. I’ll definitely check out that Red Sox political blog though, sounds interesting if it actually works. If we created a similar subforum to discuss other issues with rules about civility I’d be all in favor, I just prefer not to be subjected to it when I’m reading a post about Monta’s injury. A lot of good points though and I’d love to pick this debate up with you another day.

Werd.
You’re right that this isn’t the thread for it. I have kind of a bad habit of veering off-topic.
I think what I like about the “mixed” forums like this is that it forces me to realize that my perspective — Cambridge kid of ’60s lefties, went to Cal, artsy fartsy, lived in SF, London, Tokyo, NY — is highly particular, annoyingly privileged, and probably highly skewed. Really, just one of many possible perspectives on stuff.
It’s the same thing I love about spending time in other countries. Whatever your POV, exposing yourself to other POVs is always a good thing, no? Living abroad for 7 years, both the bad and the good things about America really started to come into focus for me. It sounds obvious, but America is just one of many countries in the world…
On topic: I’d be kind of OK with a good-natured airhead like Pietrus as President, as long as he had Baron as VP, Nellie as Secretary of State, and Jack as Secretary of Defense… ;-)

well we're all basically products of our upbringing and all have skewed perspectives
I’m getting dangerously close to raising a similarly inappropriate nature vs nurture debate. But its impressive that you acknowledge your background as an enormously influental factor on your political views rather than simply dismissing the other side as ignorant, unenlightened and wrong. I was born to a family of liberals, too. However, my political views didnt really begin to take shape until high school and college where the hypocritical opinions expressed by the young liberals mindlessly spewing what they saw and heard on The Daily Show drove me to the “rebellious” right. (I often wonder if I’d be Obama’s biggest fan had I been subjected to similarly hypocritical and unintelligent conservative views instead) Though school came fairly easy for me, I took a 6 year hiatus and I found I could relate much better to my Marine buddies who usually hailed from red states and led much simpler lives, than my college friends. While no one could say I’m not well travelled (having spent significant time in at least 9 countries and 18 states) nearly all my international travel has been in a military uniform and spent much of it being shot at. I’ve seen much more unjust than just hatred for our country and more evil than good in my time outside the states, so my opinons are just as, if not more, skewed than your own.

I just have to toss in my two cents...
I’ve been trying to keep my mouth shut about politics lately, but I just have to say that reading this exchange has been a pure joy. If only more on the left and right could be so honest about where they are coming from and why the political discourse in this country would be in a much better place. I have to give you guys serious props for keeping the discussion so down to earth and calm, when it can be so easy to spew talking points and plug your ears.
I’m not usually one to talk politics. Most of my friends and family are conservative (with a few exceptions) so at most family events I find myself having to bite my tongue to avoid an exhausting debate and giving up any chance of enjoying my evening. Sometimes I crave a place where the debate could be constructive and enlightened on both sides, but unfortunately I’ve had a hard time finding a place like that. I’d be in favor of having a political section of GSoM but I can totally understand why a lot of people might come here to escape that sort of thing.

as for Obama's skills
my buddy said he’s not bad, just that he didn’t exactly dominate on a court with nothing more than a bunch of former midle of the road high school ballers. Heres the detailed scouting report I got: he said Obama played soft,(but then I wouldnt expect a Presidential candidate to be throwing his body around recklessly or trying to bang down low with a bunch of stupid jarheads who are liable to do something stupid) He compared his skills to Pietrus with much less tenacious defense…A bit lacksidasical with the ball, and gets 3-point happy, but shows flashes of athleticism and has a good outside shot.
I agree he’d probably work McCain over in a hoops. McCain’s inability to lift his arms over his shoulders could really hinder his J. Though I think I’d take John with his old man strength in a UFC bout. But Sleepy you certainly shouldnt pick your candidate based on athletic prowess, W was a hell of an athlete…I was stationed at Camp David for two years and he used to take us and the secret service on runs where he routinely smoked the majority of us.

Maannnnnn Monta... c'mon.
I sincerely hope this is just an extreme, alarmist POV from a doc who doesn’t really know the scoop as I do not want this situation to get any worse.
It was already gonna be a tough year for the Dubs with a healthy Monta, I can’t imagine the blow a less-explosive Monta would bring.
Great players adapt to what they got though, and if he isn’t as explosive he’ll just have to learn how to be a great PG. He’ll still be athletic and very quick, and will compensate for his ankle if this truly IS a worst case scenario.
PLUS REMEMBER, he is very young and has healed quickly in the past.
I hope he has learned from this dumb mistake (however he hurt it, it was prolly pretty dumb if it wasn’t basketball related, which everyone sez it wasn’t), and grows from this experience both on and off the court.
I know it’s tough (and also remember, this is coming from a Blazer fan who had to live through Oden getting the dreaded microfracture surgery and appear to be coming through it with flying colors), but this could help Monta in the long run and with proper rehab and rest he’ll come back as good as ever.
Perhaps making you guys a worser team is even for the best, as you’ll get a better lottery pick (and as I’ve argued here before, being really bad is the best course of action as long as you trust your front office to draft the best dude… best way to get another superstar even with cap space).
C’mon Monta… get better.

somewhat agreed
honestly, i love monta and the ceiling for this kid is so high that we don’t honestly know where he can peak. But I’m having a hard time believeing that monta will come back from this unscathed, and it pisses me off more then a little that the accident apparently occured while doing something that he quite frankly shouldn’t of been doing. If an organization came up to me and said, we’re gonna offer you a 7 digit salary to work for us, but you can’t do any high risk activities while working for us like sky diving, riding motorcycles, etc., id absolutely jump all over that, and yet all too often you hear about these stars who do.
If monta has lost his explosiveness, im in total agreement, trade him. Quite frankly, there are alot of guards in the league who can give teams 20 pts a night, but not all of them had the speed and agility that monta had. If he’s lost that cause of his dumb decisions, then I don’t see any reason to keep him around long term, provided we cant get anything for him at that point.

trade him?
Who’s going to want his 6 year, $66MM contract if he’s damaged goods?

Let’s not get too drastic. Even if Monta loses some speed, he would still be pretty fast. He would still be fast enough to get off his jumper, which he makes. A Monta without explosive speed is still a pretty good player, and may even be good enough to be worth 11 mil (not sure about that, but maybe close to it).

Breakin Ankles
I just found these kids on this DVd and they are freakin sick handling the rock. Maybe we can get lucky and nab one of them in about 14 years.

Life without Monta
Man I was watching youtube monta rookie sophomore game highlights where Monta has like 10 dunks and the last one where Reggie Miller is saying “this is a point guard… his head is at the backboard and its headed to the rim.. that’s extension… Michael Jordan used to do that” I must have watched that dunk like 10 times. Anyway I was thinking MJ had a really bad injury his second year, he missed like 60 games with a broken bone in his foot and obviously he came back. (I had tickets to Warriors/Bulls that year and was hellof bummed MJ wasn’t playing— to add insult to injury Orlando Woolridge scored about 30 and the Ws lost).
I know it’s not the same injury but the doctor quoted above doesn’t have Monta’s x-rays or whatever so his opinion is inherently speculative. Good info but definitely too early to panic.
More optimism: Last year when Oden went down I thought the season was over for Portland but they had three talented lottery picks (Aldridge, Outlaw, and Webster) who all started playing well that year. I think we have a similar situation with Wright, Williams, and Randolph. Doubtful that they all develop like the Blazer guys but we don’t need them all tbc we have more veteran talent than that team, just one or two will be enough.
More optimism: I see similarities with the Ws team that beat Dallas in 07. Nellie is known for small ball but this is somewhat misleading as what he really likes is versatile athletic midsize guys who create matchup problems. With MOnta and Baron he couldn’t do that so much last year. Monta was not a factor in the Dallas series. Granted we have no J-rich but Maggette may be a better replacement as he has similar physicality to Jason and can drive better. No Baron obviously but hopefully Marcus can be a poor man’s version in the short term. Remember this isn’t the playoffs against a 67 win team. there are some talented guys on this team and Nellie should find a way to keep the team competitive. Unfortunately no superstar to take over. I see the team taking care of business against the bad and ok teams and losing a lot of close games to good teams.
Monta: I feel bad bc obviously loves the game and it shows so much in his style of play. It’s hard not to be really sad for him. Perspective: He lived a dream that we would all trade places with, he played and excelled in the NBA right out of high school. He took his amazing talent and worked on it and respected it (up to this incident maybe). He made his family rich beyond their wildest dreams. I only hope he can get through this injury and the death of his older brother and have a great career and life.

BARON WAS THE ONLY REASON WE WON THAT SERIES
Obviously. That was a historic playoff performance (by Baron). Just saying I think this team is equipped to play that style more this year than last year when Monta and Baron were usually in the backcourt together and GS had little depth. Not saying they are capable of upsetting the #1 team in the league in the playoffs.

Maybe my comparison was a stretch
I meant that this team has the personel to play tough agressive defense with guys who can guard bigger players and then create mismatches on offense similar to what they did with Jackson, Barnes, Richardson etc in the 07 playoffs but with Jackson, Magette, Buike, Wright, Turiaf playing those roles. I admit I’m probably the first to use “Brandan Wright” and “tough” in the same sentence so maybe its just wishful thinking but I still think this team will be comptetitive. I don’t think they are anywhere near as good as 07 team especially with no Monta but maybe by the end of the season if Monta comes back strong and young players develop they can be close.
