Are the GSW a horrible organization or unlucky?

When a franchise such as the SA Spurs stays dominant for a decade, it seems like the whole organization is a well oiled machine.  Everyone stays on the same page, and there is a plan that is followed.  Quick, reactive decisions, aren't usually made, unless there is an offer that is just too good to refuse (e.g. Pau Gasol and the Lakers).  I don't know what everyone thinks about the Warriors,  and I'm talking about this offseason particularly, but they seem to be about the opposite of a well oiled machine.  Losing Baron and Monta, were unexpected so I can't blame the organization, but their reaction just doesn't make sense to me.  I see the Dubs missing the playoffs and no higher then the 10th seed (Lakers, SA, NO, Dal, Clips, Suns, Houston, Trail Blazers, Jazz are all significantly better the the Dubs even with Ellis for the whole season)  I'm writing this post because (I'm bored) I am really confused about what the Warriors are doing.  It seems to me that they don't have a plan, and that they are acting like our current squad is good, which it certainly is not.  What would be the smart thing for the Warriors to do at this point?

Star-divide

First off:  Are we building for the present?  Some of the moves that we made make it seem like we are.  We are paying Cory M nearly as much as we would have paid Baron if a new contract had been drawn up.  We are bringing in role players such as Turiaf, and there is now trade talk about Tinsley, when we have a team consisting of nothing BUT role players.  To give the Warriors some credit, they aren't committing so much to the present team, that we will be strapped and unable to sign free agents in the future, but we could have had even more flexibility in the future.  Also, our present team is comprised in a haphazard and poor manner.  Did we need another scorer who needs the ball in their hand and doesn't distribute such as Cory?  Weren't Jackson, Ellis, and Harrington, already enough of that?  Turiaf might be a good signing because he fits our need for rebounding and a strong inside presence, but I'm not sure if he was really worth the money, especially if he takes time away from the development of Wright and Randolph.

Secondly:  Are we building for the future?  This really seems to be the only thing that we can do, because we are certaintly not going to win much with the current roster.  If we are building for the future lets go for it.  Lets not do anything half-assed here.  Lets develop the young players or make trades with them that make sense.  Lets evaluate Belinelli, Wright, Randolph, and all the other youngins' and create a plan around them for the future.  Are Wright and Randolph really redundant players?  Lets find out as soon as we can so we can get a good deal for one of them.  What kind of team would these players make if they all developed together?  Would there be a good distributor, a good rebounder, some inside strength, scoring, and defense?  Or would these players not work together at all?  This is the kind of thinking that I hope Mullin in Company is doing. And if they trade for Tinsley I have officially given up hope.

Third:  Why is our current team comprised how it is.  I guess its just due to the panic caused by Baron's decision, but our roster makes NO sense.  Ellis creates shots for himself, Jackson, Harrington, and Maggette do also.  Then there is Biedrins who is a solid rebounding and slashing center, and a bunch of young players, in particular big men with lots of potential, who need someone to feed them the ball.  Who is going to feed them the ball?

I guess I'm just going off on a frustrated rant, and writing this has actually given me more respect for the organization.  I guess they were left shocked by Baron and have just been trying to pull things together as well as possible.  There is still opportunity in the future, and a slight chance that the team could be decent this year.  Overall, even if the team sucks this year, the organization has done all it can, and if the young talent developes well we could have a bright future.  Its just frustrating for it to feel the way it did in the late 90s and early 00's when we were always looking at our young players with "potential" and hoping for the future.  Maybe the Warriors are just unlucky, but when a team doesn't make the playoffs 14 out of 15 years (or something like that) it seems like there is more then luck at play.

drafting & decision making

Had we picked someone not named Joe Smith (KG, Wallace, etc) with the #1 pick that year we might have had a different decade (maybe even like SA has had with the Duncan) but that’s water over the damn now … and only ONE example of GSW drafts that could have gone a whole lot better (that’s another post another day)

Plan? Mullin has had plans that haven’t worked out (Murphy, Dun, JRich, Foyle etc.) and some reactions to the unexpected (firing Monty when he couldn’t unload any players) in the past as well. As far as his reaction to sign Maggs & plan to go after Turiaf I’m in the minority it seems – they’re both going to pay dividends and bring things to the table no one else does. But adding them seems to me a “plan” to stay competitive for the 8th seed rather than tank the season – and that may be as much for Nelson’s sake as anything (going after Wilken’s record). Good arguments could be made for winning, and for tanking imo.

This roster isn’t perfect (there’s a revelation huh?) but it does have a bit of a direction, an identity – the players do “fit” into an offense based on drive and dish to posts or shooters. We don’t have a single player to “feed” in the post so I don’t think that’s really an issue. You’re not alone, there’s plenty of frustration to go around and I’d bet that includes Mullin and Nelson.

No they’re just a joke. The trio of Cohan, Rowell, and Mullin are ridiculously under-qualified to be steering the ship of a half a billion dollar corporation. Mullin’s at least a nice guy. Cohan and Rowell by all reports (media + personal connections) are both incompetent and unprofessional.

Maybe or maybe not? How much did he pay for the team and how much could he sell it for now? Perhaps his agenda is not on court performance but bottom line performance?

Disastrous leadership, all around

Would have liked to see our franchise savior working out in Oakland or Las Vegas at a professional off-season training program. You let our only true leader and difference-maker walk away for nothing. There is no communication between management and players. Doesn’t it always shock you how little they seem to know what’s going on their player’s heads? Our leadership doesn’t know how to recognize other leadership qualities. What example does it set?

Until Someone Comes Here And Gives a Sh*t...

Point blank, the Dubs don’t have an owner who really cares too much about the team being a top tier NBA organization, hence the bottom dwellers of the NBA for the past 15+ years. The Dubs aside from 2006-2008 have been one of the poorest performing teams in North American Sports. Really only the Lions and Royals come to mind as teams that are perennial locks for no post season play.

With the combo of bad luck and no desire from the owner, the Dubs really are a horrible organization. In one weird way, I like supporting and rooting for an immense underdog-I mean they have to get good soon right? Let’s just hope the past two years weren’t an aberration!

yeah

as what alot of people are saying its a combo of bad luck wait horrible luck, and horrible ownership. Cohen never wanted to use his money come on he didnt build a new arena that big and nice, he remodeled an old coliseum if you read reviews its known for not having enough room and i dont need reviews to say that cause i know it is. we had GARY ST JEAN! for so many years. and thats when 30 wins was a godsend. mullin is a little better but he dont understand that some people are not worth superstar money when they are a nobody i.e foyle (sorry zorgon!) the team is not in small market like some other teams that suck. Monta getting hurt is part of the bad luck, j rich out for some of the season, that year jamison could of made the all star team but got hurt. and that was when it was in oakland.
Know what kind of team i want one where we got all those 1 and done people at their prime with a little bit of the people who left and became great. now that would of been a team. Brian cardinal, earl boykins, matt barnes, than add donyell marshal, latrell, gilbert. antawn. than put in eric mussleman to coach! if they were all in the right time together ha look out bulls 72 wins would be nothing! but unfortunately i live in reality so that won’t happen! they all had to be a part of each other when they kinda sucked. come on who could not beat cardinal one on one back in 02! lol ha i need to sleep now to dream this all up!

So I don't have a signature well these words would do! Who knew that upgrades can have downgrades too!
