Breaking News: Monta admits he lied!!!

The contra costa times just reported that Monta told the warriors he lied about his injury and that it was sustained while doing an outdoor activity unrelated to basketball. Here is the Link: http://www.contracostatimes.com/ci_10398517.  I think he decided he had to come clean because people were putting the pieces together ever so quickly. I don't know what good any of this does now that the truth is out because I think it's highly unlikely they will void his contract, but we'll see, as for now it means a lot of negative press.

I was about to post this lol. Anyways, I believe he will get and does deserve some type of punishment for this.

Answer: Yes (If the activity was restricted)

Why? We give him one of the biggest pay raises in NBA History so he can be our Franchise player. Getting injured for 3 Months from a restricted activity after becoming our official Franchise player without playing a single game is unacceptable to me. Instead of being a positive example, he did the opposite by getting injured. IF the injury is severe and if it does have a long term affect there is a good chance his contract may get terminated. Kawakami just posted a blog about this and he sees a strong point in Mr. Bruce Jenks opinion on Monta Ellis and his leadership.

Answer: No (If the activity was a complete accident)

Accidents happen. He’s out 3 months already. Let him heal.

Im kinda pround of the kid,

look I’m 24, and I did/still do lots of stupid stuff. After the injury, he probably panicked and had his agent or some other intermediatery tell the Warriors and the press his injury either happened working out or playing pick up ball. But I think since then he has done the right thing, keep his mouth shut, at first, and get the ankle fixed. Then he contacted Mullin and co and is trying to work something out. Im hopeful, he will come out and be apologetic and honest in a few days after talking to management and making some arangement.

If anything i respect the kid for how he is handling the situation(even if its by own doing)

I think an appropriate punishment would be a semi hefty fine(around 20,000) and a sincere apology to the fans and the media would be enough. Obviosuly this hurts us this year, and his training camp to learn to play the 1, but this isnt the end of the world. Hopefully he recovers fully and learns from this and becomes even a better player in the future.

I got your back Monta.

Ellis to the rim.

semi-hefty?

$20k might sound semi-hefty to you, but not to someone making $11MM/year for the next 6. That’s like fining someone who makes $60k/year $109 dollars. Literally.

If they are going to fine him, it’s going to be hundreds of thousands of dollars, at a minimum. And if you’re a businessman, you’d think it should be millions. I mean, he gets paid to play — about $134k PER GAME, to be exact. So if he misses all of October and November, that’s 22 games. 22 x $134k = $3MM. If he misses all of 2008, that’s 39 games. 39 x $134k = $5.2MM.

If he got hurt doing something obviously stupid and the Warriors fine him less than MILLIONS, they are being DAMNED NICE.

I love Monta, but business is business. If I was Cohan, NO WAY I want to pay the dude to rehab for his own dumb mistake. If it was a freak accident, that might be something else. But again, business is business and Monta being injured directly hurts the Warriors Basketball team AS A BUSINESS.

And don’t cry for Monta. Even if they really stick it to him with the fine he still has another $60MM coming to him (including +$5MM this year).

I disagree

You can’t equate him with yourself just because of youth. He’s a PROFESSIONAL athlete. No excuse, and actually quite dumb on his part. If he puts in a rigorous recovery effort, all should be forgiven. But a financial penalty should be imposed regardless.

still don’t know squat – until we know what he was doing and then whether it was prohibitively restricted by his contract everything is speculation and column filler by writers looking for fodder

The source did not reveal what Ellis told Warriors management he was doing when he got hurt, only that he “was scared to tell the truth at first,” but eventually did.

The most important think is...

Monta came clean, it is now behind us and let’s not cry over spilled milk… move forward. Besides, who among us can really claim he/she is a saint (I am sure once in our lives we have told some lie or another). The other important thing is, I hope he knows that he will be held accountable for his action somehow or another (be it in the form of a suspension, fine, or he might not be the same player when he is fully recovers, etc.). It is imperative that some kind of action is taken by management to show the other players there is no favoritism involved. Just my .02.

by Misternightrod on Sep 6, 2008 12:57 PM PDT   0 recs

i feel

they should fine him by cutting his pay for the amount of games he does not play. that should be fitting since he hurt himself doing something he did not do. but thats just my opinion.

So I don't have a signature well these words would do! Who knew that upgrades can have downgrades too!

Just fine him for all the games he misses

then he wont get the money and maybe we can void his contract if it affects his career

by montadaboss on Sep 6, 2008 1:09 PM PDT   0 recs

"Just fine him for all the games he misses"

That actually sounds pretty fair to me, but that would be like a $2.25mil fine… not exactly, but somewhere close to it if he’s making $11mil per year. I’m not sure if anyone has ever been fined that much for something before.

it really depends

on how he heals.

what does monta have? speed. that’s what makes him him. he has a great midrange jumper, but that a lot of that also has to do with speed. if monta loses a step on his way back (and let’s be real, its a torn ligament, so its very possible), then this becomes a BIG deal. if monta comes back 90-100% speed, then all will be forgiven. fine him, whatever, but it won’t end up being that big of a deal.

but i think we need to realize that this COULD be a permanent type of injury. i sure hope not, but i think that factor will be the MAIN factor in how we view this situation in 6 monts to a year.

WHY

should anyone hate on someone being a normal person? After all he’s not just some object just because the team paid for him. So he played a little streetball, slipped up on the court and got injured. NOTHING we can do. Why cry over spilled milk? Just clean up the mess and get on with everything else. Fine him. He’s already injured and if he’s a true competitor like he seems to be, he isn’t too happy with the fact that he’ll be out for 3+ months. The world isn’t going to end just because he’s on the bench, playoffs were a super maybe even before this. So let this be a blessing in disguise for the rookies and bench players. Let Monta watch as his team moves without him for the time being, he’ll learn, he’s still a young player.

"So he played a little streetball, slipped up on the court and got injured."

No. You better read the link up top. I think you missed the meat of this fanpost.

I have some observations here. The recurring theme that i’ve noticed around this community is anger. Fans seem to be most angry that he has jeopardized the Warriors success this season and possibly in future seasons moreso than the fact that he has jeopardized his health and his carreer. There’s no doubt that he’ll be fittingly punished—most likely in a monetary way—for his poor judgement and possible disregard of contractual clauses. But the injury is already a punishment in and of itself. Nothing the Warriors do to reprimand him or scold him or fine him can hurt him more than he’s hurt himself already. He’ll be dealt with by management accordingly. We don’t have to worry about that. What we do have to worry about is how much of his potential as a basketball player has he taken away from himself?

the warriors

The warriors should void his deal and force him to redo it. If you’re gonna fine him force a redo of the deal instead and save whatever the max amount they can fine him in cap numbers. What’s the point of fines anyhow. his number still counts toward the cap. I’m assuming fining a player X dollars does not lower the cap figure by the same amount for that year.

I bet you he injured himself doing something he shouldn’t have done. Teams need force players to follow the terms of their agreements by actually following through with the consequences of breaking them. The Lakers should have voided Radmonivic’s deal last year when he went snowboarding. But instead they fined him. More teams that are willing to tear up contracts the more players will learn they really can’t do certain things.

Yes I know it sucks they can’t ski, snowboard, ride a motorcycle and probably do a huge list of things but they get millions compared to you and me so they can’t complain much.

by ufwa on Sep 7, 2008 9:59 AM PDT   0 recs

There may be means to void his deal, but it’s rarely as simple as just saying you want to void the deal and “force” him to redo it. It is significantly rare that contracts are voided for violations, but I am almost positive that if his deal is voided we would not have Bird rights to sign him again without regards to the cap and almost certain that he’s become an UNrestricted free agent. Since we don’t have anything other than the vet minimum to sign him with if his contract is voided and a few teams have the MLE or BAE to play with, do you think there’s even a fraction of the proverbial snowball’s chance in hell that a punishment void would do anything other than see him next suit up in some other team’s uniform?

You only void a contract when you want to get rid of a player. Voiding a contract is not a means to get a reduced salary now that you’re ticked off at someone. I’m sure management is plenty pissed off at Monta, but unless they’re so pissed that they’re willing to part ways, they shouldn’t and won’t void the contract.

If the injury was career ending, then they’d void it. That’s what those provisions are there for. They’re not there (and there are no provisions in the CBA as such) to alter salary (while retaining a player) after a contract is signed because someone did something stupid.

by jae on Sep 7, 2008 10:19 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Show love for what?

He apparently breached terms of his contract very shortly after being rewarded with a nice contract extension, jeopardizing the season, upending the team’s plans (it was going to take a lot of work for the players to adjust to their roles even if he hadn’t gone down), screwing his teammates (except maybe the guys who get a shot in his absence). While most of us were knuckleheads at that age, our mistakes didn’t cost our employers huge amounts of money.

And yeah, he’s been sort of spectacular since he got here. Except on defense.

by Ray of Lite on Sep 11, 2008 8:53 AM PDT to parent up   1 recs

So...

Do any of you have season tickets? If you did, I think the vast majority of you would be a lot more pissed off. This year I decided to switch our season tickets from Raiders to Warriors (Family is huge fans of both, and we’ve had raiders season tix for 11 years). I have followed the warriors since I was a young kid, and I don’t ever remember being as pissed off as I am with this situation. I love Monta’s game and his attitude, but as a season ticket holder this really pisses me off. This feels like Jeff Kent all over again… If Jeff Kent were a young, untapped talent, with a personality that fans and players could identify with. Its just that I work hard every day and pay a lot of money to see Monta and the crew play ball in my free time. While getting hurt sucks in general (I just spent 6 months healing a basketball related accessory novicular fracture), getting hurt and lying about it to the people who support you and those who give you a paycheck are two totally different scenarios. Don’t get me wrong- I don’t want Monta’s head on a stake, and I don’t want to see him punished too harshly (out of fear that he’d be a douchebag and not play to his potential, ala Baron), I just want some of my damn money back.

My feelings exactly. I am sick of this “show him some love, he is just a young kid…blah blah blah”.

Guess what…you want to be the man, you want the nice toys, the “Bling”, the fast cars, WE pay for all that, WE the fans have a right to ask that the “Kid” understands his responsibility as a professional athlete.

I love the player, he can turn games around and had the potential to be an amazing allstar. HOWEVER…. If you want to ask for big bucks, you have a duty to your club, your fans and the league to set an example. I am sick to death of poncy kids doing things nowadays with no care it the world with a view of “whatever”. I’ll take my size 11 boot and shove it deep in “whatevers” ass!

The only reason this has come out is because he knew he has been called out and he also knew it was only a matter of time before one of his “mates” sold the true story to make a quick buck!

I agree it is now down to him to really step up and apologize to the people that have shelled out hard earned cash for season tickets – Over $4000 freakin dollars this year for a pair of bloody Club 200!!!

So anyone who wants to tell me “ahhhh it’s just an accident” can offer to pay half my season tickets if they like!

They need to come down on him hard, if nothing else, to show any future dumbass that when you hold out your hand for the fat cash, you take on responsibility. There are no “fast bucks” in this world, you have to work freaking hard to get it and if you have been given a talent, then be the man that says “I have responsibility now, I just cant do that stuff”.

Like I say, I desperately hope he can get back to full fitness and I wish him luck getting there, but HE DOES need to come out with a true open apology and advise the club that he will do everything in his power to get back to full fitness. I wish him well in that, but I also know that if he does not, I lose all respect for him, and he becomes another stupid punk, gifted an opportunity, stupidly wasted.

COME ON MONTA…BE THE MAN…WE ALL HOPE YOU ARE!

"I just want some of my damn money back"

No doubt. It’s consumer fraud. In 07 Cohan and Rowell forced people to buy season tickets for 07-08 just to get We Believe playoff tickets. Then they spent the offseason cutting costs (JRich trade) after misleading us into thinking the organization actually cared about putting the best product out there possible. We paid for We Believe 08-09, but instead got all this wasted talk about how this 10 million dollar exception was going to make that cheap and silly move worth it.

This past spring we had to renew our season tickets BEFORE the Warriors were eliminated from the playoffs. Then this offseason they went cheap on Baron and Monta screws up so badly doing something that he thought it was worth lying about.

That’s 2 seasons in a row with price hikes and paying in advance for a product that this sorry organization didn’t deliver on. Monta’s injury isn’t their fault of course, but investing in an immature liar who they ran Baron and JRich out of town for is a joke.

Warriors season ticket holders aren’t exactly getting their money’s worth or being treated fairly. And yes I think Warriors season ticket holders should get some money back. It’s a joke.

(I think I’ll add the above lines to my outro blog entry)

Haha, All 22 year olds are immature. . When we are young we are impatient and want to do things, sometimes they are not smart but hey, we learn! I did a lot of stupid stuff when I was 22 so I can’t be too harsh. The front office shoulda known that putting their hopes on a young tweener guard was not the smartest plan. OK...so how about this....

A 22 year old kid at a bank makes a mistake because he was not thinking that day and forecloses your mortgage on your house… “hey thats fine he is just a kid” no..I dont think you would say this if it was your house. To bring this to context, Our season may just have been foreclosed, before it even begins….damn right this is serious.

Granted a bank screw up may get sorted out, but when you are put into a position of responsibility you have to say, “ok I have to behave different now”.

AND…since when has 22 years old been seen as a kid anymore? HE IS AN ADULT….he wanted the big cash so HE has to be the man, not the KID.

It’s one thing messing around like he did last summer, when your a rookie being paid what he was, the point is, this year is VERY different. He is a highly paid professional athlete and it is quite clear that he needs to serious manager to keep his head on straight and away from his dumbass mates.

There is a VERY strong likelihood that he will never regain 100% of that spring, pace, jump that made him so special. If so, not only did he just screw himself for the rest of his career, but the Warriors and us as the fans just got it as well. I pray for him that he does recover but some of YOU do need to read up about this injury, this is one of the worst ankle injuries you can get multiple times worse than a broken ankle.

AS I said before, if he really wants to get the respect back, he NEEDS to come clean and apologize. Yes we all make mistakes, but it is how you then behave that makes you the man after the event. He can either be honest or a punk, I like to think he will be honest but we will see.

Making money is one thing, becoming a world sports star and an EXAMPLE to youngsters is something else. If he openly apologizes, I will be the first to stand up, applaud and say fair enough, now get your dumbass in the gym and get fit, with my best wishes. If not, just another money grabbing, arrogant punk with no style or humility.

We will see how he behaves.

really?
There is a VERY strong likelihood that he will never regain 100% of that spring, pace, jump that made him so special.

Did you read the article at the top of this very fanpost? Doc says he should make a full recovery. You’re playing right into a typical American “well just apologize and we will forgive you” mentality that’s so fleeting and silly. Apology or no apology, just don’t do it again in the future and take your financial lumps. Case closed.

"They can trade me," Bonds said. "I don't think they will, though. It's not like I want to be traded, man. I'm a Giant. I'm stuck here till the end."

No I didnt....instead I did my own research on the Internet....

I prefer to try and find out information for myself rather than simply follow the herd and say “well the post above says its going to be fine”. FACT – This is a fricking NASTY injury, yes he could make a full recovery but yes he COULD also not make a full recovery.

And Being British I am far from falling into the American apologizing crap! I am simply looking at him to be a man! Not some kid who says whoops, oh dear…my bad. Yeah I want an apology, but I also want an example set for future young players and that means hitting him hard in terms of financial compensation.

You want the big cash, then act the big man, you want to act the ass, then get an ass pay packet.

Simple really!

+1 well said

he needs to be held accountable for his actions. i think the problem here is he is still a kid that has been put in a position to be THE MAN and he clearly isnt ready for that position yet.

be the change you wish to see in the world.

you stick with your "internet research"

I’ll stick with a doctor’s opinion. He (Monta, not the doctor lol) is young, he is extremely athletic, and he has a great work ethic (could’ve won mip player two years in a row). Those factors combined, plus the general feeling that it is possible to make a full recovery, make it much more likely that he does recover to full strength.

if he doesn’t, well, life sucks don’t it? boys will be boys. Every year there will be some jeff kent that gets injured washing his car (grown ass man, by the way) or radjmasdfnso on the lakers who gets injured snow boarding. Dock their pay and hope they won’t do it again. Move on, my fellow warrior fan.

It should work that way

But this is America, where we overpay our athletes and allow them to do whatever they want with nothing more than a slap on the wrist. It would be nice to see him get fined and be back to full strength come the all-star break but an apology wouldnt mean anything at this point, because all i want to see is #8 back on the court. We all know Mullin wont void Monta’s contract, so just sit back and see how the rest of the team steps up until Monta returns.
That is professional sports in America. It sucks, but that is how it works.

We all know Mullin wont void Monta’s contract

maybe thats the problem. if everybody knows that mully wont do anything hard to punish monta then whats stoping him or anybody else on the team from doing something stupid to get themselves hurt.

If Mullin voids Monta's contract

Monta would become a free agent . Plus I believe we would lose his bird rights. Meaning we could only sign him for the amount we would be under the cap. This is why Mullin won’t and shouldn’t void Monta’s contract.

i understand that

im not saying that his contract should be voided. my point though is that he will never act responsibly if he is not held responsible for his actions.

What then would you do (within contractual limits) to hold him responsible?
