Stephen Jackson: You're one poor captain.

Unfortunatley, in our society, money equates to power. Monta in many respect is still a kid and has a lot of maturing still to do and the people around him are probably hesitant to give him that guidance because of his new found status.  This is where one's veteran teammates need to step in and have a heart to heart with a young player like Monta.

Please, for a moment, let's set aside our idealist visions and think in terms of reality. Of course a team captain has no duty to be a team shrink but he does have some duties', and in Captain Jack's case those duties were side stepped and very clearly so. Think about it, the guy has gone into hibernation this summer, he doesn't return the head coaches phone calls and the only player he talked to was Baron, a teammate that was for all intent and purposes, out the door.

Being in the league as long as Captain Jack has been, and, playing with trouble makers like Artest, Tinsley, and a good portion of that Indiana Pacers team, captain jack was ever so equipped to have a heart to heart with Monta and share his experiences of what happens when you go about things the wrong way. Those of you who say "monta should have known not to put his body in harms way" need to remember he is a KID and Kids think they are immortal. Who better than captain jack to bring this kid down to earth and explain to him how Ron Artest lost a year of his career, millions of dollars, his reputation, and started the downfall of a franchise because he made a stupid decision.

Not even as a captain, did you owe this talk to Monta, but as  a friend and a human being. You shoulda said "look kid, your making a lot of money now and your too important to the team to put your body in harms way for no reason, we need you". But nope, no talk, no phone call, no nothing. Consistent and true to form as he has been the entire off season.

Look, am I blaming Captain Jack for Monta's poor judgment? NO. Am I blaming him for being pissed off at the team? No. At the end of the day everyone is responsible for their own decisions, and who knows if such a talk would have even done anything. But am I mad at captain jack for not being in any sort of communications with the players on this team when he is the only remaining leader?, hell yes. What are you a leader for captain jack? the money, the glory, what is it? A true leader cares about people and realizes he has duties that extend past those of others and he needs to stay true to those duties even when he himself is treading through the roughest of waters. You are a good player, and, I hope you get an extension and a good payday because you deserve it. But you are one poor captain.

My diary is assuming Monta did something stupid, or in the least, something he shouldn't have been doing because he was scared to tell the warriors the truth. I think it is a fair assumption to make, and, even though we don't know for sure yet, liars for the most part don't get the benefit of doubt. If nothing else this whole debacle has shown us that Monta is not ready to be a team captain, and, captain jack probably never was. Like I said he is one of my favorite players on the court, but, leadership extends beyond the court.

hahaha wow

are you kidding me? do u really think jackson knew monta was doing whatever he was doing when he got hurt. nobody saw this coming why would stephen jackson see this coming. they are all grown men jackson isn’t going to be keeping track of everyone in the offseason making sure they are staying safe and are all following their contracts.

I never said he was to blame...

and I was explicit in saying, maybe a talk wouldn’t have helped. This is the issue: does a good team captain keep in touch (atleast have one chat) with his teammates during the offseason?

by sarangc on Sep 6, 2008 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

first of all

its a pretty short off season… guys are doing there own thing.. traveling spending time with family working out.. whatever. second, do we know for a fact that stephen jackson never made any phone calls to his team mates at all?

by Agent Zero on Sep 7, 2008 6:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Stephen Jackson, you suck

Why didn’t you use your powers of ESP to foretell the future and telepathically warn the kid — well, Monta’s not really a kid anymore, but that’s neither here nor there — not to do whatever it is he did. More to the real point, I thought Monta had essentially been anointed as The Man. If so, he was as responsible as anyone to make sure that his teammates weren’t out there washing there trucks, skateboarding, glass blowing, or whatever other risky things rich young dudes with time on their hands do.

washing THEIR trucks

  No, those trucks over there.

well

gotta ask a question first – did I miss the story where Jax spurned Nelson’s call?

seems like Jax is trying to use a window of opportunity to request a renegotiation, very much part of the biz – and that was before Monta’s injury became known, but he also said “all the right things” in the interview I saw

as far as Jax setting Monta straight before he got hurt maybe from something he shouldn’t have been doing, well, that seems like an awful lot to ask from any captain – even one who’s seen some things in Indy

by hardcore on Sep 6, 2008 8:18 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

please

this is pathetic, I think you’re living inside your own head a bit too much. maybe it sounded profound and insightful when you were reciting it in front of the bathroom mirror every morning but it’s just pathetic. it’s amazing to me how some people will try to invent something to complain about when something is going wrong. monta ellis is a grown ass man and he can make his own decisions, in no way is stephen jackson held accountable. while we’re at it why don’t we blame the commissioner and everybody in the front office for what happened as well? they oversee the players, this is just terrible terrible stuff.

by Bigben777 on Sep 6, 2008 8:18 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It's a legitimate question...

I was explicit in my diary that IM NOT BLAMING STEPHEN JACKSON. But it’s not pathetic to question a team captain leadership when he is wholly disconnecting himself from the team. The issue is his leadership, and, not being in touch with his teammates is relevant. I would agree with you if we were talking about a non-captain, but were not.

pretty generic response...

“i don’t agree with you so im going to question your fanhood”. Your better off saving the wear and tear on your keyboard.

by sarangc on Sep 6, 2008 9:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, absolutely.

I don’t think anyone here agrees with you. Maybe if you took a little responsibility for what you wrote, and recognize the lack of coherence involved, you’d understand why I called it a trolling attempt.

But, you can’t even conjugate ’you’re’ and ‘your’ correctly. So, what am I doing expecting so much out of one vapid fan.

by Amoc on Sep 6, 2008 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Calm down. While this post is poorly thought out, it is pretty irrelevant to whether or not sarangc is a fair weather fan or not. You don’t have to agree with all your players actions all the time to be a true fan. If someone wanted to call a player on his BS that doesn’t make them less of a fan, in some ways, it makes them more of one. Although in this case the criticism is pretty off base.

it me but alot of these people critizing are people who were not on gsom before its like whats going on?! you act like we dont have a curse lol or never was bad b4.

How do you know

that Stephen Jackson didn’t call up Monta? Or that Monta didn’t call up Stephen to apologize for his actions? Or that maybe Stephen trusts Monta to learn from his mistakes? Maybe Stephen only gives a chat when he sees a PATTERN of damaging behavior.

But you are one poor captain?

Isn’t this the offseason? How would Jax know that Montay was getting into something dangerous? Jax has a life in Texas that probably keeps him too busy to be a babysitter.

WOW

All I can say is that this is one poorly thought out AND written fanpost. How do you criticize and support a player on a team you seem to think you root for? You make no sense. This post should be removed, because it’s a definite disgrace to true fans of any team for that matter. Such a sorry excuse for a “fan” you are.

captain

SJax was our captain last season. Though he’s projected to be named captain again, he’s technically not a captain right now.

This is like saying your supervisor, who’s on a vacation, is a bad boss because he didn’t call at work, in the middle of his vacation, to check in and it happen something bad went on at work.

Maybe...

He sent his teamates a myspace message?!?

by Tony.psd on Sep 7, 2008 7:23 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

wow... how do you even know they weren't in contact?

Further more Jackson has epitmizes what a captain should be when he first set foot in the 510 with the Warriors. He started organizing team dinners on road trips and encourage all of the Warriors to spend time together during the season. Something that wasn’t organized by J-Rich or Baron. And you have balls to call him out?

A Sonics fan without a team.. Though I'm auditioning GS Warriors this season.

I guess Stephen Jackson didnt call sarangc

to alert him that he was going to call Monta. So that must mean that Stephen did not call Monta once this offseason.

Lets uh...

Whoa Nellie! Calm down homie- Jack gets paid to play ball, not to be the dude’s secretary/mentor/political or social adviser, or the team’s spy for that matter. Look, Monta messed up, bad. He knows it, or he wouldn’t have lied about it. We know it, or we wouldn’t have gotten season tickets… Just kidding… Kind of? But Jack having any place in this argument is totally beyond me. Lets focus our energy somewhere else.

why didn’t Nelson have a father – son chat with Monta? Why didn’t Mullin have a former NBA allstar big-brother sitdown with him? where was Monta’s Momma in all this? SOMEBODY save the boy!
