How good can our team really be?

I was doing a whole lot of thinking.  Since everyone has been trying to come up with trade scenario after trade scenario to get rid of Maggs, but we all really know.  We are not going to get rid of Maggs... Not this year... Not the next.  I started thinking why are we even trying, and if Maggs is dead weight now, and How can Maggs help.  By the way I think he can help this team, and we might be making him a little too much of our scapegoat at the moment.

I started to think about how good is our team right now.  What can we do internally to get the most out of everyone.  Who should be starting, who comes off the bench, how many minutes, who should they be in with.

When Monta returns, Im not going to say we are a playoff team, but we can be very deep and very telented offensively.  If we could get more rebounds and play marginally better on D we could be close to a playoff team.

Here is what I suggest (Nelson take a deep breath) Eliminate Small Ball.  Then go with this lineup:

Crawford
Jax
Buike
Wright
Beidrins

2nd Team (until Monta is 100%- then switch Crawford and Monta)

Monta
Rambo
Maggs
Randolph
Turiaf

Limited Minutes go to:

CJ, Morrow, Williams, Demarcus

So call me crazy but could not going small ball be the answer to our ugly rebounding diferential.  And Call me Crazy again, but Maggs againt a 2nd team defense would make him mighty productive off the bench.  Imagine no 6'5 PF's... aww that would be nice.

Lastly, I would like to conclude that Williams should be given a chance to run with the 1st team once in a while to see how he actually distrubutes.  (Not Start but run with) I think he will do a good job, considering he is a "true" PG.  And really is he that much more of a defensive liability than CJ.  Not to mention he can run a fastbreak better.  I will give CJ some credit he has played well, shooting.  But he is a poor mans Monta with no hops (but two healthy legs).

Kurz = No comment (search D-League for a  big bodied 6-9' to 7' replacement)

I ask again could our extremly deep backcourt be a bigger advantage if we don't spread them out to possitions 1-4; instead making two deep guard team rotations.  I think it could take a lot fo pressure off of that 4 spot to be productive on offense and to really focus on D and Boards.  Let me know!!!

Realistically...

As far as wins go, I think the we can win about 33 games. I don’t know if that really answers your question, but that’s all I have for you.

with monta healthy

1. monta
2. crawford
3. jackson
4. wright
5. beans

2nd unit

1. watson
2. belinelli
3. buike
4. maggette
5. turiaf

limited minutes: randolph, morrow

With the emergence of belinelli, i dont see any room on this current roster to realistically play randolph hard minutes. While i’m not a huge fan of maggette, i think he can be a real assett as a 2nd man coming off the bench. I don’t forsee maggette being traded anytime in the near future, so to make the most out of him we could use him as a spark for our often low producing bench.

Without maggette, i’d have no problem putting randolph at the 4, but after seeing randolph play limited minutes this season, lets face it the kid is RAW. He has some highlight moments, but on the offense end he has absolutely nothing. Williams or Nelson need to be moved from a lineup for a backup 4 or 5, with monta back we will be severely clogged at all guard positions.

When monta first comes back tho, id switch monta and belinelli and go with

1. rambo
2. crawford
3. jackson
4. wright
5. beans

1. watson
2. monta
3. buike
4. maggette
5. turiaf

I was going to post something like this, but you already said most of it.

Randolph should get nothing more than spot minutes this year- what Wright was getting last year, or less. He does not produce wins, and playing him will not make him better. It will only appease the selfish desires of a lot of fans.

by antihero on Jan 2, 2009 1:29 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That's better

But Wright has to develop into a quality starter. Maybe trade Maggette for a PF and it would work right into your rotation.

How does everyone think Maggette will adapt to the new pass oriented offense?

i like your idea dude

but honestly maby he should get rid of jamal and maggs

or put maggs in the starting linup

because jamals been to streaky, and just bad with us so far.

We GSOMers

always come up with these lineups that have maggette on the second unit, and it “should” be this or it “should” be that, but with all due respect guys a lineup that has maggs on the bench just aint gonna happen, Nellie will have this lineup when both guys come back, no matter what we want or say.
1.Monta
2.Crawford
3.Jackson
4.Maggette
5.Biedrins

I agree

with u shooter on that lineup but i would make one change to it. Move jax to the 3 and either start rambo at the 2. As much as i would love to c that happen, dub4life is right on the fact that nellie will never do this and that probably will b the lineup when they are all healthy.

None of this crap is going to work!

Maggs at the 4 will not work. Nellie has tried it and as far as I can remember, it didnt work well for us. I would rather randolph play the 4 on the 2nd team and at least let him get some experience.

I believe we have everything we need as far as personnel with the exception of a PF. We have youth, talent, and loads of potential. We can be a very good team so long as we have a PF that fits nellie ball (Al Harrington-esque type player). What made al dangerous was that he could shoot and the PFs guarding him had to respect his shot, which pulled them out of the paint. Now Kurz might fit this role but I know nothing about him…just that he can shoot.

Now that I think about it, id rather have kurz at the 4 before maggs.

Nellie wont start maggette at the 4

I’m not at all convinced that he wont. What we’ve seen over the last few weeks with maggette out is an admittance by the warriors front office that maggette isn’t working on this team. On a Razor and Mr. T broadcast, Nellie publicly came out and said that maggette at the 4 wasn’t working well, and that maggs needs to learn how to pass more. Maggette is a seasoned vet, im not at all convinced that he will suddenly change his play style and become a passing forward. It may take a few games with maggs back, but I can most definitely see a transition period of Nellie bringing maggs off the bench, ESPECIALLY when monta comes back.

This new style offense of drive and dish has been showing alot more promise then the ISO Jack and ISO magg on the box offense, and putting them both back in the same lineup will only revert us back to the old offense. Time will tell, but I don’t see this change happening immediately. More likely, when maggette comes back and reminds everyone why he wasn’t working out, we will see the transition begin. But maybe he’ll surprise us all and buy into the philosophy, in which case a win win for all.

When Harrington arrived, Nellie said that he needed to rebound more. Al was no newbie to the game. His inability to rebound his position was well known and that’s not something that players regularly make big changes in. Result: Al stayed the same poor rebounder.

Nellie says Maggs needs to learn to pass more. Maggs is a multi year vet, with a pretty consistent low assist rate. While this year has been even lower and Iexpect it to be able to get back to the level he was at in LA, banking on Maggs improving his passing is foolish bet.

I think if you ask Maggette

to do something he doesn’t do, setting up plays for other guys, he’s just going to be less effective in the end. Maybe turn the ball over more with his mind going two different directions. I like the poster’s idea of bringing Maggette off of the bench to make him your primary scoring artist. His former coaches would also agree with this strategy, but I doubt Corey would ever warm up to that idea unless we were winning ball games on a consistent basis, and he was still logging at least 30 minutes a game which is not impossible for your sixth man. He has yet to hit his stride as a Warrior.

He and Azubuike are extremely tough to guard at their respected positions, playing them together coming off of the bench would not be pretty to watch, but it may be effective. Personally, I think Azubuike can be Corey Maggette and I was against the signing in the first place. But if he can agree to come off the bench and still give it 100%, by season’s end we should expect to see a new Corey Maggette and a new Warrior team, and maybe it would not be so impossible for Mully to put “deal Maggette” down on his Warrior bucket list, before he’s seen the final curtain as our beloved GM.

part, not all, of Harrinton's rebounding as a GSW

can be attributed to – being place on the perimeter on offense, and by consistently guarding centers while on defense

now, I KNOW his rebounding # have never been very good, but the fact that Harrington’s rebounding # didn’t go down that significantly under the circumstances could be precisely because he was trying harder to hit the boards …

why do I keep defending this guy? just pissed I guess

Maggs better play unselfishly

If he can really take to Nelson’s system he would be a really good player. I don’t know if he can stop being a ball hog tho.

Nelson playing rookies? And the backup players?

hahaha never , he’ll just ride the starters until they die.

We Believe 2.0!
I know the Warriors are a lot better than the way they're playing right now.
They just have to get healthy and dig deep. THERE'S MORE TO THIS TEAM.

Maggs Won't Mind Coming Off the Bench If There is a Spotlight on his Role as the "Sixth Man"

and gets consistent minutes – Look at Gino in S.A. or Vinny Johnson (“the Microwave”) – if you are treated as important – you don’t care when you are on the floor. Actually, I think it may be better to play on the W’s second team because they need consistent drivers to the hole and can stablize the offense by drawing fouls and getting in the bonus.

by terryteagle on Jan 2, 2009 4:27 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

In theory I agree with you only

they already tried making Maggette “the Man” off the bench in L.A….he was not pleased. But maybe it will be different this time around for whatever reason. I can’t imagine why since he’s more developed in the league now.

nellie's a loser

the ONLY legitimate solution is to trade nellie for a power forward—HE will never acquire one as long as he is the coach, and since so many fools think nellie is actually a genius, then it should be easy to do.
he could have gotten david lee or zach randolph instead of another shooter, but of course, went with the obvious non-solution.
to make it worse, harrington has been a near star under dantoni, but nellie couldn’t get him to do anything except mis 3’s. and mike pietrus is doing a lot better with orlando then under nellie—reminds me of sarunis marcelonus, vince askew, and the guy who went to houston and helped them win 2 championships, all those guys were a LOT better when they left the idiocy that is nellie-ball.

by nelliehater on Jan 2, 2009 6:59 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

we might be making Maggette a little too much of our scapegoat at the moment

agreed, however

1. Crawford cannot guard starting PG or SG but he has a chance to guard the other teams’ backups, and is the one most suited to the 6th man role – he can swing between PG & SG, will come off the bench as a scorer, and who’s speed is an even bigger advantage vs. other teams’ second units … Maggette could come off the bench but only gives us one of those advantages (yes, he could play SG or SF but those are nearly the same) …

2. Similarly, while I love KAz he is not suited to start ahead of the other SG/SF on this roster and is most valuable bringing energy off the bench at both those spots

3. If Marco has earned minutes, how can CJ not have? I’m not high on either but CJ’s surely shown more than Williams, and certainly enough not to suffer minutes while Williams runs with the first team (?!)

Monta, Jax, Maggette, Wright, Andris start, backed up by
Crawford, Marco, KAz and CJ playing perimeter off the bench
& Turiaf and Randolph (in limited but flexible minutes) inside

we can be very deep and very telented offensively.

Unless there’s a roster move and we swap out a perimeter player or two for a big, we aren’t likely to see the end of Euro-ball (replacing smallball) nor play “big” all the time.

What Nelson did is shift smallball from an isolation-based offense to a drive and dish (euro) style offense and it’s had modest dividends – with Maggette healthy, he might even flourish who knows.

by hardcore on Jan 2, 2009 7:59 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

I make the Williams comment becuase of this reason...

Once Monta returns he gives us exactly what CJ gives us… only better…

CJ is a liability on defense and the fast break , unlike Monta

Willaims on the other hand, is probably about the same on the defensive end, yet has the ability to run a team and make good passes. The only real advantage CJ has is speed, but I think controling the ball and distributing are more needed on our team. Sorry but as I said CJ is a poor mans monta.

Willaims simply gives us a different look. If we actually saw him play maybe we can be a better read for him, but CJ is not that good and I would not put him on my depth chart as a backup, more like a 3rd stringer.

by shooter1525 on Jan 2, 2009 10:37 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not sure where you appraisal of Williams’ defensive prowess comes from, nor his ability to run the team since as you remind us he hasn’t played enough for most of us to make any reasonable evaluation – and even if CJ is a poor man’s Monta, what better backup to push the pace? Sorry but I don’t see any advantage for Williams at all, just giving a different look isn’t convincing. CJ has hit big 4th baskets in two of our wins – rare as those have been, he’s made a significant albeit flawed contribution thus far …

nellie's a loser

and don’t YOU fall into the trap of thinking that the team is a pg short of being a force. what they did with bd is win ONE first round playoff series against the ONLY team they could have beaten, then not even make the playoffs the following year.
nellie LET bd go (yes, nellie, NOT some front office puke making less than half of what nellie makes), because he knows that nellie-ball is a fraud that can only get worse as the rest of the league catches on, so the team would have had at BEST a .500 record this year even with bd, so he let him go so as to have a built-in excuse for the team’s failure.
just watch who they select in the upcoming draft—some one who can defend and rebound?—hell no, someone who will further fit into the idiotic system that is nellie-ball.
