Memory Lane '05: We could have drafted Granger

I remember it well, the Warriors were on the board, and, amazingly, the two picks I coveted for the Dubs were still there, Danny Granger and Gerald Green (ok, so he hasn't turn out so hot).

Star-divide

I OBVIOUSLY assumed that the Warriors would draft a small forward, trade Dunleavy or let his contract expire and we would finally be able to move on after the nightmare of the  2002 draft where, in addition to dropping down two spots, we took the biggest twinkie on the Board.

And then the name rolled across my screen. Who the *$#& is Ike Diogu?!?!

The rest is history.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Yeah

Granger is amazing. He is an all-around player. He’s definitely one of the most underrated players in the NBA, if not the most.

his d is not great. indiana may be a worse defensive team than the warriors, prbly not. but its enough that its close.

but he is a damn good player. i think i would take monta over him tho. permitted monta comes back as good as he was before.

by montamazing on Jan 11, 2009 10:18 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Monta > Granger > Any other warriors player.

meh

I’d take Granger over Monta too.

I thought that went without saying,

with or without Moped incident

Too bad our front office is such a debacle, otherwise we might be good someday...

by warriorsscore110 on Jan 12, 2009 8:28 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

His D is decent, not great. But he is an athletic defender and I could see him BECOMING a very very good defender

by sam23 on Jan 12, 2009 7:45 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he puts up block numbers he isnt a great one on one defender. yet

by sam23 on Jan 12, 2009 9:34 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

By Warrior standards he is a great defender….

Too bad our front office is such a debacle, otherwise we might be good someday...

I remember discounting Granger because he didn’t play in a strong conference and was already a senior. I thought he would never reach the upside he’s reached right now.

I really, really wanted Chris Paul though. A part of me was sad that we traded for Baron Davis because that would throw us out of tank range. I was shocked that Deron Williams went above Paul.

The next guy i wanted that i thought would fall to us was Channing Frye.

lol

bynum doesn’t fit with our system. leave him with the lakers. besides, we had patrick o’bryant who was basically a clone of bynum.

I'm going to get banned for all these mindless comments.

by CatchAndShoot on Jan 12, 2009 1:00 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

wait, what?

come on, you cannot call POB a bynum clone and not have someone call you out on that. are they clones because they are both tall and large? because it can’t be because of the way they play basketball…

by cap'n hack on Jan 12, 2009 1:08 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

to test our draft picks we should punch them really hard in the shoulder.

if they say “ow” then we dont draft them plain and simple!!! now POB and dunleavy? THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN IN TEARS.

by HoLdEmUP on Jan 12, 2009 1:28 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

love it

we should also have a test where someone just yells at them for a couple minutes. if they cry, storm off, or demand a trade (even before we draft them), we’ll know not to take them. they would be allowed to try to reason with the person screaming at them or dunk on them. that’s called drafting for character.

heart of a champion, will of the warrior.

hahahahaha

i think randolph and jackson would pass with flying colors.

by HoLdEmUP on Jan 12, 2009 2:33 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i know

why don’t we sock them in the nuts. if they smile, we know they’re soft. if they punch you back in the nuts ten times harder, you know they’re a hustler.

Why did you have to bring up Bynum?

I had almost forgot about that, a young team with Andris, Bynum, Ellis, Buike, Bellinelli, Randolph, and Wright would be ridiculous!

by Pearlsofwisdom on Jan 11, 2009 10:19 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

why did

we draft dunleavy we could have had amare.

we could have had kobe

we could have had tmac.

no one knows how draft picks turns out so stop living in the past.

by saintdee on Jan 11, 2009 10:48 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

not to mention

we traded vince carter for antawn jamison

i’m not saying that it was a bad deal

cause we ended up trading jamison too.

now that was a bad deal.

No one knows, but some are fricken' obvious.

In this case, it wasn’t just a case of who we should’ve drafted, but it was the perfect chance to get rid of one player and draft another. So it was like a double whammy.

i guess that makes sense. kudos.

Kobe wouldn't have wanted to play for us anyway

I posted this already…Hornets drafted him he didn’t want to go there, wanted to be a laker,
laker trades vlade for Kobe.

If I am wrong i will respond with a D'Oh

A lot of people don’t remember that tidbit.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

by kenntoe on Jan 12, 2009 10:26 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

but dunleavy was also a much higher pick with much higher expectations.

by sam23 on Jan 12, 2009 7:48 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

shoulda coulda woulda, we cant change the past, besides almost all drafts are a crapshoot anyway

by sfgiants114 on Jan 12, 2009 12:59 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Another one..

of the warriors missed opportunities. How many people did we pass up in the past? Danny Grainger is sick. I love how he always plays with a chip on his shoulder like every night he’s gotta go out there and prove something. that fool lit us up tonight and the last time he played us and i can guarantee you it won’t be the last time he does that.

by ItsDatFriscoSwag415 on Jan 12, 2009 8:25 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This is a stupid post. Hell I still remember

drafting Chris Washburn with the No.1 pick. Should we discuss that one too? maybe that was the start fo the downfall or was it Joe Barry Carroll? We could go on and on…..get over it!

by dungeness crabdribble on Jan 12, 2009 10:06 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Some would say this is a stupid comment

What does Washburn have to do with the Pacers game from last night?

by chacabuco on Jan 12, 2009 11:03 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

could have drafted:

2001: instead of troy murphy- gerald wallace, jamaal tinsley, tony parker
2002: instead of dunleavy- drew gooden, nene, amare, caron butler, tayshaun prince, carlos boozer, or luis scloa
2003: instead of pietrus – luke ridnour, david west, boris diaw, travis outlaw, kendrick perkins, leandro barbosa, josh howard jason kapono, luke walton, or even kyle korver
2004 i love andris seriously my favorite warrior but notable players drafted after him are: al jefferson, josh smith, kevin martin, and varejo
2005:: instead of ike- bynum, granger and david lee and monta
etc. etc. etc,
being a warriors fan is an exercise in futility, and thats why i love it

by tkiddy on Jan 12, 2009 2:29 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’m still mad at houston for taking Rudy Gay one spot ahead of us. Talk about anticipation and excitement to utter…@$#^%#$…Who the hell is Patrick O’Bryant!!?!?!

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

by kenntoe on Jan 12, 2009 4:48 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah, POB...IDK why we even drafted him

and the 2005 draft? oh hey another big man….BUST

I will always be your fan JRich. Good Luck

by chili01 on Jan 12, 2009 7:23 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

for pietrus year, i would only take howard. west and outlaw over him

and for andris, varejo?? comeon, martin? we had JRICH!!

and for al, wel hes great, but i dont think hed do good in a fast system, hes not real atheletic and is poorly conditioned..but hes got talent.
and for the 06 draft, just a weak class

07 and 08, to me, great pics for what we had

by gswfan1 on Jan 12, 2009 9:21 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This list is stretching it

lots of second round picks everyone passed up

by SFzig on Jan 14, 2009 5:25 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

just rebounds

ya, a big who could come in and grab some boards, who we drafted and had albeit briefly at min cost … wonder how valuable that would be … ya, not a superstar, but maybe we’d’ve less whining about Maggette playing PF …

by hardcore on Jan 12, 2009 9:38 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Funny thing is every team in the league can

do the would have should have could have. Hell, Portland will forever live down the Sam Bowie over MJ draft. So everyone has the same problem. Its hit or miss with the draft. You need luck.

by dungeness crabdribble on Jan 12, 2009 5:43 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Granger is a good all around player.

only thing I hate about him, he won the slam dunk contest instead of JRich

I will always be your fan JRich. Good Luck

Wrong Pacer...

You’re thinking of Fred Jones.

by olympicmike on Jan 12, 2009 9:57 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Fred Jones only won by default cause Jrich couldn’t put down that slam. All Fred Jones did was slam the ball hard. It really wasn’t that impressive.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

by kenntoe on Jan 12, 2009 10:28 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree completely...

I actually thought it was cool that J-Rich didn’t dumb it down just to get the easy points. He could have taken his third straight dunk contest if he just decided to throw down a windmill or something like that after he had trouble with his planned dunk. But he didn’t compromise just to win. The guy has class, he knew he was there to entertain.

by olympicmike on Jan 12, 2009 10:31 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what are you talking about?

you must be thinking about fred jones. J-Rich should have won that contest that year because some of the dunks that he was only attempting to complete were better than what weak @$$ Fred Jones threw down.

I’ll admit it, I liked the Ike pick a lot at the time.

Same. I thought Diogu would become a pretty solid player.

nellie's a loser

and HE is the leader of a team that made the playoffs two years ago, failed to do so last year, and ABYSMALLY failed to do so this year.
and i’ll do better than useless insight for your tiny mind. i PREDICT right now that the team will do little better next year (max 35 wins) and that nellie will “leave” under suspicious circumstances. so you heard it hear first, garbanzo.

that Ike was a major part of the trade that allowed us to trade Dunleavey and Murphy. Without him in that trade we don’t get Harrington and Jackson and We Believe never happens.
