Monta Ellis: Change We Can Believe In

3208554918_2b71f26296_medium

Monta Obama (via tatersandonions)

With Obama's inauguration coming up on Tuesday, and a possible Ellis return looming, hope and change are everywhere. Obama and Ellis have the potential to bring change to their respective realms, Obama the world, and Monta the....well, the Warriors.

While I am fans of both, and I do believe in both, the task at hand is MONUMENTAL, and change will not come about in a day, a term, or a season. Monta and Obama have both been optimistic, perhaps overly-so. Economic recovery, the end of a war, the playoffs.

What we need now is a change of attitude, and that is what I think they will bring. A youthful exuberance, unity, consistency in policy and jumpshooting.

Monta will be a better pointgaurd than most think he will. He knows how to run a fastbreak better than anyone on the team, passing or finishing. He is the best penetrator, the best jumpshooter, and the best finisher. WIth his ability to shoot or drive, Defenses collapse, and teammates become open. Last year we saw him run the pick and roll with Goose, we saw him drive and kick, we saw him make wrap around passes in traffic. He has the ability to be an elite scoring point guard.

No one knows what the next 4 years or 41 games will bring, but because of Monta we have hope for a better future. YES WE CAN!

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

speaking of thomspon

did anyone read the midterm grades he gave the warriors in the paper today? craw B-, Buike C, Biens A, Jax D, Wright C-, Maggs C, Turiaf C, Belinelli C+, CJ B, Morrow C, AR C, Kurz C. DON NELSON – D. I like the Jax verdict, don’t like belinelli’s or Turiaf’s grades. otherwise he gave solid reasons for the rest of his decisions.

-morrows grade makes no sense, i think he’d be a B+
-belli should be at least a B, but i can understand C i guess
-buki’s grade should be wayyy higher…hes dominating

for an undrafted rookie

he has been amazing…

he’s ranked 2 at 3 pnt shooting in the league

he hits up the boards like no other guard we have right now

i think that makes him above average

3rd I believe

Right behind Anthony Morrow.

by Shells on Jan 18, 2009 7:59 PM PST up reply actions

No, it doesn't

He had those two great games, and that’s about it. He is decent off the bench. He’s an above average shooter. Great at catching and shooting. When he gets to 100 attempts, I’d love for him to keep his average behind the 3pt line.

I do like his hustle on the boards. Problem is, we suck as a rebounding team. He’s only really competing against Andris and Buike for boards. Besides the opposing team, of course.

Thanks for sharing

According to the grade presented, MT thinks like this?
A Andris
B CJ (LostHawk, someone actually agrees with me!)
B – Jamal
C+ Marco
C Corey, AR, Rob, Kelenna, Ronny, Anthony M.
C- Brandan
D Nellie and Stephen

No Marcus and Jermareo? Makes me want to buy the paper now. (just to see why they scored the score they have.)

Now, isn’t that a tad bit easier to read? =)

Sorry Sam, couldn’t resist.

Only truly optimistic “Warriors fan” types really believe that Obama will actually be the “hope” they’re looking for. He’ll be better than Bush, but that’s like saying “When Monta comes back we’ll be better than the Wizards.” The bar is so low… so frigging low. I give him 100 days… then people will start questioning his ability to lead. I’m not saying that’s fair or not, but he won’t have the economy fixed, the warS will not be over, there’ll be another seize-fire that will later be broken in the Israel/Palestine conflict, and countless other things that will go wrong…

I give him more than 100 days til the people start to turn on him. Most Presidents get at least a 100 day honeymoon period, and Obama has an almost unprecedented level of near unconditional love and blaming Bush has to buy him almost a year at least.

by bucknall20 on Jan 18, 2009 8:36 PM PST reply actions

Lets see...

… I’m currently a senior in High School, the twelfth grade.

Before the recent election, George W. Bush has been president of the United State for 8 straight years. Hmm, damn. I’m a senior in High School, but Bush has been president ever since I was a damn fourth grader in elementary school! Basically, my whole experience of growing up and going through puberty and entering adulthood has been under the George W. Bush presidency. LOL. That’s a damn long time and I can see why people are sick of him.

Anyways, why would you even question why people are excited about him? People are tired of Bush and are happy to finally have a change of scenery in this country now that we have a new President. Sure, it is very possible that Obama can end up being worse than Bush, and all the BO supporters from 08 might end up looking stupid; but right now we’re just happy to have new HOPE for the country, instead of having the same guy who’s let us down for 8 straight years.

Think of it like the Indiana-Golden State trade of 2007.

  • 12 year playoff drought is comparable to the 8 years of suckiness that Bush brought to this country.

  • Getting rid of Dunleavy/Muphy for Harrington/Jackson is like getting rid of Bush in exchange for Obama.

  • When we traded for Harrington/Jackson and finally got healthy, we still had LOW odds to make the playoffs since we were 9 games below .500 and we had the toughest remaining schedule in the league. That right there has similarities to the US being in a recession right now and having bad odds to get better. A lot of work to be done in order to overcome the hardship, but with the new Warriors and the new President, we have more hope and we believe.

  • Obama is also like Paul Wong, the guy who came out to Warriors games with the giant “We Believe” sign, when most Warriors fans were losing hope in the team. That sign started giving fans hope, and all of a sudden the improbable happened and the Warriors surprisingly clinched a playoff berth. If it wasn’t for Paul Wong, there would have been no “We Believe” movment, and there wouldn’t have been that sea of gold in the Oracle. That’s like Obama showing up and giving speeches that inspire people when our country is in a bad state right now. Paul Wong came in when the Warriors had a bad record, and helped fans to believe in the team; Obama is coming in when the country is in a bad economic situation, and he’s helped to spark a lot of citizens to have hope for making change.

I’m not saying that Obama will actually make a decent/good/great change in the country, but I can SEE and UNDERSTAND why people are so happy to have him on board in the White House. But don’t mind me… you’re not like the rest of us, you’re obviously different and better. You’re cooler and more wiser than the rest of us, since you never believe in anything to happen, and because optimism and hope is completely irrelevant in your book.

(btw, my Warriors/Obama comparisons aren’t completely serious. lol)

was it my videos or my comments on this site that made you think i was older? Usually a lot of the good video editors on Youtube are younger people, since they have a lot of time on their hands and are kind of living “stress free”; once they get older they have to start worrying about getting jobs and whatnot (which is what happened to me, along with some other stuff which is why i don’t make videos anymore). There are some mixers out there who are older (like BBJ) who find time in their schedules to still manage to make great videos, though.

But yeah, sometimes I act like a little kid on here so people won’t think i’m older than I am. I think the GSoM crew already knew my age since I added the GSoM Myspace and they saw my page.

That’s when the whole We Believe thing started. It felt like my whole high school was crazier than before, just because the Warriors made the playoffs. Even all my teachers were talking about how crazy the playoff games were, all the students and faculty were going crazy and all the Lakers fans at my school were all quiet (Warriors got to the 2nd round and the Lakers didn’t, hahaha). The problem is unrealistic expectations

The elected official has all these plans, and I’m sure they’re honest plans, but when it comes to enacting them, it’s impossible. You can’t just add to the budget without increasing taxes or axing other important projects, you can’t just cut taxes without axing important projects. Each step of the way is incredibly difficult and requires a lot of compromise from everybody, which leads to people not getting much what they wanted in the first place. Omnipotent rulers can make changes more quickly, but they aren’t always the best and are far more easily corrupted than elected officials.

The bottom line is that it’s impossible for everybody to be happy. There will always be people who feel they deserve more than they’re getting and that their government should provide it. No system of government will ever solve this problem, the best you can hope to do is to keep everybody happy enough with the status quo to leave it in place.

And the time politicians have to say whatever it takes to get elected

Although, I think it’s more a function of people expecting things to be done super quickly. Sure, Obama wont be able to end the war as fast as he promised, but he knew that was a possibility, while the people will be up in arms if/when it happens. Politicians speak of goals, while the public takes what politicians say as promises.

I was thinking about that as well.

It wouldn’t be as crazy as “We Believe”, but what if the team finally gets healthy and we see an asian guy in the crowd at almost every home game holding up a big sign that says “YES WE CAN!”. And then we go on a big run to make the playoffs and Oracle Arena starts giving out a bunch of yellow “Yes We Can” shirts to wear.

On a serious note, I really do think Ellis can make a GREAT impact. I hate it when people are expecting him to be the next Steve Nash just because Baron is gone and we have no true point guard (except for MW). This system is doesn’t really on a single ballhandler to make all the plays. Even when the Warriors and Suns were the highest scoring teams, they were still very different since PHX relied on Nash for all their fastbreaks whereas the Warriors would just go crazy on the court and have scoring from all players in transition.

PG: Monta Ellis
SG: Jamal Crawford

All 12 guys on guys would still be able to contribute well on the floor; from the starting five, all the way to the last guy on the bench. The only players that would probably have a really hard time to be productive is M.Williams and Jermareo Davidson. Good god

How can folks idolize an immature liar and draw a parallel between him and the president-elect? Very disturbing.

One guy is a highly accomplished and brilliant man who just ran an amazing campaign. (Putting aside he’s way too centrist for my views)

The other didn’t even go to college and can barely put a coherent sentence together in his interviews.

This is just disrespecting Obama.

by Atma Brother ONE on Jan 19, 2009 9:08 AM PST reply actions

OK

I’ll ignore the inane resorting to saying this is about the JRich trade since that makes ZERO sense and that’s a pure fabrication of your imagination.

The funny thing is that people seem to forget that the main reason the Warriors are 11-29 is precisely because of Monta going joyriding. He’s an adult who screwed up and has yet to put out a decent apology. Why is there so much Monta worship from the Warriors fanbase?

I’m not saying Monta’s necessarily a bad guy (I don’t know him personally) and I’d guess he’s a decent fellow. But donning Monta in Obama-ish promos is just silly. Yes, we all want Monta to become the next president.

You’re dumb if you think that we’re comparing Obama to Monta in a comparison based on worldwide change. We’re saying that (as Dubs Fan in Boston previously stated) Monta will bring positive change to the Warriors organization the same way Obama will bring positive change to the U.S.

Let me put it in terms that you MIGHT understand: Obama is to the United States of America as Monta is to the Golden State Warriors.

I'll keep my focus on the point of this fanpost
He’s drawing a comparison between a crappy, weakened warriors team and a crappy, weakened world that each have somebody taking a new position in early January with the hope of turning things around.

See, there. That’s the comparison he’s making. It’s not profound statement, it’s just a statement about hope:
The entire nation/world is currently hoping that Barack Obama (spell check still doesn’t recognize it by the way) will come in and drastically improve the world.
The entire Warriors fan base is currently hoping that Monta Ellis will come in and drastically improve the Warriors.

Notice that those two sentences both correctly describe the feelings, hopes, and dreams of a group of people? Notice that the two sentences are exactly the same except for nation/world vs. Warriors fan base and Obama vs. Ellis? See the comparison? That’s what he’s talking about. Monta Ellis’ potential future effect on the Warriors basketball team. That’s it. It’s about basketball, not life or role models.

The funny thing is that people seem to forget that the main reason the Warriors are 11-29 is precisely because of Monta going joyriding.

I’ll say it again. The thing that you and the rest of GSoM posters seem to be forgetting is that it’s not just Monta that has been injured. Almost half of the team has been significantly injured at one point or another:

Monta: Broken ankle
Maggette: Busted hamstrings
Jax: Hand, hamstrings
Wright: Dislocated shoulder
Belinelli: Ankle
CJ: Turf toe (a new one)

You take the #1, #2, #3, #7, #8, and #9 guys away from any team, and their season will go down the crapper.

He’s an adult who screwed up and has yet to put out a decent apology.

There are a lot of adults who’ve done way worse without “putting out a decent apology”, which by the way is a purely subjective judgement. I don’t think Kobe’s apology for the Colorado incident was “decent” enough, I’m still waiting for that. I don’t think any of the folks involved in the justice firing scandal have apologized enough for my taste. I could go on, but I digress.

Monta has been a supremely talented basketball player his entire life. He’s probably been coddled throughout his career, with the possible exception of Nellie. I bet he never went to class in high school because his teachers just gave him passing grades anyways, etc. You’re expecting this person to be a “man” about it? Grow up. Listen to Mr. Barkley. He didn’t ask to be a role model, and none of the commentary on him here has been of the “Monta is the greatest!!! I want my kid to grow up just like him!” ilk. Why do you think people are comparing Monta & Obama on their “role model” merits? I heard none of that.

But donning Monta in Obama-ish promos is just silly. It really minimizes everything that Obama has accomplished and what his election means to millions of people.

So, do you get offended every time you hear a rap song because they “stole” the beat from some fine upstanding soul artist, and then talk about drugs & murder on top of it? Do you get offended every time a skater does a 900 because it “minimizes” what Tony Hawk accomplished? Are you angered by Andy Warhol’s artwork because Campbell’s already created it?

I’m sure he understood your analogy… at least I hope he did.

see why do you have to use Hannity for the analogy? Dont Olbermann, Maddows, and even Colmes basically do the same thing?

by sam23 on Jan 19, 2009 3:01 PM PST up reply actions

Just a joke...

And I think you already know the answer to your question. Also I wouldn’t lump Maddow in with the rest of the talking heads. Just because she is liberal doesn’t mean she operates the same way. She doesn’t have nearly the venom of Hannity, Rush, O’Reily, or Olberman. I remember her criticizing Blagojevic (sic?) a few nights before the big controversy broke. As she saw it his threat to terminate state contracts with BofA over a dispute with a local business/union workers amounted to extortion. She did it in a humorous way but that was the first time I remember anyone calling him corrupt on national TV.

But honestly doesn’t Hannity stand out as particularly bullish and closed mined even among the conservative hosts?

Thing 2

by olympicmike on Jan 19, 2009 4:14 PM PST up reply actions

ehh, see I dont really see much of a difference between Maddow and Olbermann at all. I think Hannity stands out as bullish because he consistently debates the other side live. Granted he usually simply talks right over them and always takes the last word, but I rarely see Maddow or Olbermann even talking to someone who doesnt agree. (In fact they usually just talk to each other which feels a little incestuous) Maddow just seems like a Olbermann with even more snarky smiles and sarcasm.

"It’s a hobby of mine. Kind of like collecting your fingernail clippings or pooping in jars." -olympic mike

by sam23 on Jan 19, 2009 9:36 PM PST up reply actions

Well...

I won’t argue the issue, but I do see a difference. As far as not debating the other side, Maddow gained popularity on television by debating Tucker Carlson, Joe Scarborough, and (most famously) Pat Buchanan along with many others over the last couple years. She also commonly invites guests with opposing views on her radio show.

Having said that I can totally understand your take on her as a more sarcastic cheery version of Olbermann if you have only watched her on occasion. Her show is heavily based on what has worked for Olbermann ratings wise but she never gets close to the self-righteousness of the “Special Comment”.

It’s also very hard to see the differences in people you disagree with in general. It’s much easier to lump them all together and cram them into a little box labeled “what’s wrong with the left”. (not saying I don’t do the same thing)

Thing 2

by olympicmike on Jan 19, 2009 10:22 PM PST up reply actions

true, I do only watch her on occasion and absolutely true its much easier to lump them together when I dont agree with them in general.

Is a terrible analogy (Hannity & Colmes). FJ and I agree on most stuff- neither of us talk over each other (Hannity) and neither of us is a liberal softie who isn’t even that left (Colmes).

My views can be bold and passionate. My predictions can be off. But one thing you cannot criticize me for for is talking over others or not letting them speak.

Isn’t everyone pushing an “agenda” when they state their perspectives? Your disdain makes no sense.

by Atma Brother ONE on Jan 20, 2009 11:05 AM PST up reply actions

No disdain here...

just a little poor humor. I know you can take a little teasing.

Isn’t everyone pushing an "agenda" when they state their perspectives?

In my opinion no. There are many posters here that never seem to be pushing an agenda. They just share observations or throw out ideas without really pushing one way or another.

It’s good as a writer to have an opinion. No one wants to read someone who doesn’t take a stand for anything. The thing that is amusing about your writing is that you take a stand on everything. It really does read like you keep a list that goes something like this “Nelson: Good, Mullin: Bad, Andris: Not worth the Money, Rowell: Bad, Cohan: Evil, JRich: Good, Monta: Immature liar…”. You leave no room for nuance or further evolution of thought in the way that you write.

I’m not asking you to change, it actually works for you. It’s entertaining to read apparently (just look at the success you’ve had) and it sparks wild debate. But I don’t see anything wrong with a little playful teasing from time to time when you get particularly “Cocksure” (to quote a friend of ours). =P

How much did your season tickets cost this year?

Wake up and realise that when you sign that piece of paper for many millions of dollars you are no longer a stupid kid, but a product and a key part of an oganisaztion that has forsaken others in the belief that, said athlete may bring success to the team. That’s called responsibility.

Monta has a responsibility not to do stupid things like messing around on a moped, because “HE CHOSE” to sign that contract and therefore he chose, to take a position that expected “responsibility”.

Just in case you were not sure what it meant, here is the definition of “responsibility” with my thoughts in brackets:
1. the state or fact of being responsible. (does that include riding a moped!)
2. an instance of being responsible: The responsibility for this mess is yours! (If you screw up, own up and take the responsibility Monta)
3. a particular burden of obligation upon one who is responsible: the responsibilities of authority. (i.e. an NBA Contract)
4. a person or thing for which one is responsible: A child is a responsibility to its parents. (Or a newly signed multi-million dollar player to his franchise)
5. reliability or dependability, esp. in meeting debts or payments. (If you cost the franchise potential money by not making playoffs, then you cannot expect to profit from your contract, i.e the fine)
—Idiom6. on one’s own responsibility, on one’s own initiative or authority: He changed the order on his own responsibility. (i.e. was too immature to get that contract and to understand what it meant for him and his lifestyle)

Many people may have based their season ticket decision on the fact that they enjoyed watching the exciting play of Monta, so please dont come out with the “its just an accident ..get over it” crap, unless of course if you were in his position, you would offer to pay some money of that fat contract back to the season ticket holders that had to secure their seats before said act of arseheadedness!

It’s called accountability and when you learn to drive a car, you accept accountability, if you own a firearm you learn accountability, likewise if you sign such a contract you SHOULD learn accountability.

When you grow up a bit, you will come to understand why so many people are so pissed off at Monta still, especially as AB1 has pointed out, he has not formerly apologized for his behaviour. Whereas what he really needs is a size 12 boot buried deep in is backside.

All that said, I look forward to his return and hope he is close to his previous performance capability, that way I dont feel like he completely screwed the team this year, which is how I and many others feel.

Is that simple enough for you to now understand?

It's about heart, It's about fight, It's about being a Warrior!

by BritWarriorGSW on Jan 21, 2009 3:20 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

eh...get over it

Season ticket holders have to be smarter about how they spend their money. If they want to drop 10K on some pimp seats, and bank on a 21 year old not doing anything stupid, that’s your business. If therere are any season ticket holders out there hurting for cash, they probably shouldn’t be shelling out a ton of cash on season tickets. It’s called risk.

Get over it.

"They can trade me," Bonds said. "I don't think they will, though. It's not like I want to be traded, man. I'm a Giant. I'm stuck here till the end."

by GameSix on Jan 21, 2009 8:32 AM PST up reply actions

Werd.

BritWarrior, no disrespect, but as long as you’re sitting atop your high horse atop your soapbox, let me ask you few questions:

1. If you had read an offseason puff-piece about Monta that described his rigorous offseason workouts, with a little aside about him tootling around Mississippi on his moped — and no accident had occurred — would you have flipped out about it?

2. Have you ever made a mistake in your life? Just to throw out a couple of common examples, have you ever cheated on a girlfriend, or driven whilst slightly drunk?

3. Have you told a lie about a bad mistake you had made? For example, if you had smashed up your friend’s car whilst slightly under the influence, and no one had seen you do it, would you have considered not fessing up to having been drunk; or if you had cheated on your girlfriend, would you have considered not telling her?

Obviously, you don’t have to answer any of these questions to me; but it’d be cool if you pondered them and were honest with yourself. It’s curious to me that you’re called “BritWarrior” but seem to display a few of the qualities of the stereotypical American (I mean, we’ve got loads of great qualities, but these aren’t among them): sanctimoniousness; quickness to judge others; hypocrisy (I’m assuming you’ve ever done something unwise in your life — if not, my bad); and a quasi-religious inability to accept that quite often things in this world happen for no reason.

Just ‘cos you’re bummed about not getting your entertainment bang for your buck, doesn’t mean you need to go hunting for a scapegoat to assuage your sadness. And if your deep-down answer to any of the above questions is yes … well, as GameSix says, “eh, get over it.”

Why are the Warriors holding Monta back? Afraid he'll injure his ankle again? But he never injured his ankle from a "Basketball Accident"-even though he said that first*, It's not like he's going to run into a Moped being on the court.

I know there’s no rush but I don’t know how Monta feels about being held back, but fans that like watching him play, may be impatient, like me. I doubt he’ll injure his ankle during a basketball game unless he lands on somebody’s foot.
