Is Nelly Retarded?
Why in the hell does he start Randolph and give him less then 5 minutes. He was just starting to get into his groove and Nelly yanks him.
Why isn't Maggette starting in a team with a lack of size. There is a time and place to have Maggette come off the bench, but not when he is one of the top players on an injury plagued team. You bring Maggette off the bench with a full strength team (minus Monta).
Why are Randolph, and Kurz STARTING the game while Ronny is sitting on the bench. Ronny is the only thing close to a center we had without Biedrins and he starts on the bench? Nelly are you serious, or just plain stupid? Game in and game out, the Warriors loose the EXACT SAME WAY. Hey Nelly, at least TRY something different. The Thunder game was absolutely disgusting. Horrible defensive sets, and just horrible coaching. There was NO Warrior defender between Jeff Green and the hoop at the end of the game. 3 Guys surrounding him, but no one if front of him. That's Nelly's fault. Show your team how to defend a team with 1 second left. What are you doing in practice.
Don Nelson is hindering a young team from growing and learning from mistakes because HE DOESN'T LEARN FROM MISTAKES. Stubborn Nelly does coaches the exact same way every night. He is not a teacher, and that is what this team needs (*cough* Keith Smart *cough*).
The only way this young team can develope is with a smart coach, willing to try new things... like play defense.
"The lucky shot beat us tonight" says Nelly.
If he really thinks this game was about luck... he's way off. Its about him coaching a team into too many bad habits to break.
Thanks Nelly... for teaching the Warriors how to loose games.

Yea, I just stopped after this little gem
Why isn’t Maggette starting in a team with a lack of size.
You must be joking. Did you miss the first couple months when Maggette was starting?
"It’s a hobby of mine. Kind of like collecting your fingernail clippings or pooping in jars." -olympic mike
Did you miss the fact that his recent performance directly correlates with his recent health?
You’re totally (italics added for sarcasm) right, Maggette wasn’t hampered by his injuries in the first couple months, he just needed to come off the bench. And now, it’s not that he’s got two working hamstrings, it’s that he’s starting the game sitting down… I can’t believe I didn’t see that.

So you think we should plug him back in starting at the 4 again? Because that totally seemed to work well. Or should we push someone else into the 6th man role? Its not like he’s not getting minutes, so whats the problem with using him off the bench and giving him close to starter type minutes? You cant tell me thats not helping guys like Jason Terry and AK47 this year too. Because those guys were totally as efficient as starters last year as they are as 6th men this year. Bringing guys off the bench is never a role that suits them better. I cant believe I didnt see that.
"It’s a hobby of mine. Kind of like collecting your fingernail clippings or pooping in jars." -olympic mike
No
BWright should start at the 4, play 15-25 minutes depending on his play. Maggette should just be the first man off the bench, not matter which starter he comes in for. Next we should bring in Buike. Then it will be Belli, CJ, or Morrow, depending on matchups and the like. Randolph should get courtside seats for everygame.
All italicized sarcasm aside . . .
The main reason I don’t like Maggette starting is that, observationally, he is best when he comes in, gets the rock and goes to work breaking down his defender and going to the hole.
When he starts, it’s harder for his teammates to get into rhythm because nobody is passing, then every time Crawford or Jackson get the ball they jack it up because they don’t know when they will ever see the ball again.
When he’s coming off the bench he can be inserted when the offense is not rolling and can go all Maggette and just keep going to the hole. He’s best when used strategically in situations when what he brings to the table is exactly what’s needed.
I have to admit, I like him on the team, even for his salary when he comes off the bench with scoring and rebounding.

Okay
So instead… start 2 rookies. One undrafted… and the other who you only give 5 minutes to the entire game.
Brilliant
so you want Maggette starting at the 4?
"It’s a hobby of mine. Kind of like collecting your fingernail clippings or pooping in jars." -olympic mike
For the game against the Thunder
HELL YES.
Isn’t that obvious.
Are you saying you liked the starting lineup?
I’m saying Maggette is much better as a 6th man than as a starter. Why mess with that?
"It’s a hobby of mine. Kind of like collecting your fingernail clippings or pooping in jars." -olympic mike
Because you have to modify your roster when players go down, or when you play certain teams.
That’s what a coach is for.
When the starting lineup is
Crawford
Buike
Jax
AR/kurz/wright
Biedrins
Fine… bring him off the bench. But you loose 1 of the big 4, you have to start him
the fact is he’s much better playing the bulk of his minutes when Crawford, Jackson or Buike are sitting. Thus-6th man. Its really very ingenius.
"It’s a hobby of mine. Kind of like collecting your fingernail clippings or pooping in jars." -olympic mike
I agree
But not in this last game.
BTW… Jax and Crawford don’t sit… ever. So you can’t say he’s there for a replacement when their not in.
so youre only upset about the lineup shuffle for one game? Maybe Nellie wants Maggs to get comfortable with the 6th man role and not keep shuffling him in and out of different roles. I think thats a very strong possibility, especially considering Monta’s immenent return will keep Maggs in the 6th man role full time or force a trade. Look on the bright side, we improved our lottery chances and the Thunder worsened theirs.
"It’s a hobby of mine. Kind of like collecting your fingernail clippings or pooping in jars." -olympic mike
Just gonna repeat it
So he started Kurz and Randolph together instead!
A freakin BRILLIANT move.
Oh yeah…. but keep Maggette’s psyche in order. Don’t want him to feel uncomfortable.
He’s making 8 mil per for the next 5 years and he looked awful as a starter so…..NO, we DONT want him to feel uncomfortable.
"It’s a hobby of mine. Kind of like collecting your fingernail clippings or pooping in jars." -olympic mike
Exactly.... 8 Mill!!!
Make him earn his money. We can’t worry about if his feelings get hurt
Maggette should come off the bench
When you have a full roster. But when your roster is full of phantom players, he has to start, along with Turiaf.
Thats the point. Nelly doesn’t understand. Play your AR, RK when the Thunder play their subs. DON’T START THEM. That why we were down 14 to 6 in the first few minutes.
The game was lost in the opening minutes of the game
hella stupid
yeah, maggs is way better off the bench
by monta'swoman on Jan 22, 2009 3:10 PM PST up reply actions
sure, why not.
though….
AR’s minutes seem to be SOP for the rookie to keep him working hard in practice. i’d rather see him play more b/c playing rookies who aren’t ready is the recipe for tanking and they really should tank – though i foolishly root for them to win every game.
Maggette is so he can get used to coming off the bench and to reduce his minutes since his hamstrings aren’t going to be 100% until he can rest them at the end of the season.
Ronny was to prevent early foul trouble. a lot of times early on, you don’t know how the refs are going to call a game. and Ronny played 40 minutes.
Nellie is also responsible for the economy, global warming, terrorism and the extinction of the dinosaurs. it’s one thing to bitch about his current over reliance of small ball, a valid complaint – it’s another to blame him for things we have no way of knowing like whether he’s developing the team. by the way – tonight’s team is Keith Smart’s to scout and advise on. he’s the assistant coach assigned to the Thunder…
http://media.knbr.com/knbr/0121keithsmart.mp3
i doubt this changes your mind though. it’s just like ppl who hate Maggette or JRich or Baron are always going to point to their negatives and undermine their positives.
btw, it’s spelled lose not loose. sorry, that one’s too much to ignore.

Apologize for the spelling
But in a post game rant… the last thing i care about is absolute correct spelling.
I hate to “loose” :)
Enough with the stereotype
“It’s just like ppl who hate Maggette or JRich…”
No… its not like that at all.
I’m a Nelly lover (literally). So when he coaches in stupidity it pisses me off.
It was stupid to start AR, RK over Turiaf
- Why? 14-6 start. Any questions?
Its dumb to start AR and not play him more
- Why? Because the competition is tougher when starting. Fine… play him only 5 -10 minutes a game, but play him against the other teams bench so he can make more of an impact.
There are just so many questionable moves he pulls, and this isn’t the first time.
He is responsible to global warming, because of all the Ganja he blows with Willy Nelson and Owen Wilson at his poker games
It was stupid to start AR, RK over Turiaf – Why? 14-6 start.
no, it’s not dumb. Turiaf is foul prone and picking up early fouls could of limited his minutes in a game where he needed to play close to 40… did the move backfire?? yes, but it wasn’t dumb.
this is typical monday morning quarterbacking. if Turiaf had started (and the refs had decided to call the game tightly), picked up 2 quick fouls and has to sit the bench for most of the 1st half while Kurz manned the center spot, you’d be whining about why we didn’t limit Turiaf’s minutes earlier.
Its dumb to start AR and not play him more
you must be confused. i agreed with you here. but playing young guys extensively when they don’t help you win is basically the recipe for tanking and i realize that most vet coaches don’t tank until they are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. so this isn’t retarded either. it’s status quo for most veteran coaches.
by the evil monkey on Jan 22, 2009 2:43 PM PST up reply actions
did the move backfire?? yes, but it wasn’t dumb.
That is even arguable. I think the late third and Fourth quarters showed us that the refs were going to call any and everything on turiaf, except when he tried to take Maggette’s foul, haha. But by some miracle Turiaf entered the second half with only one foul. Can anyone else remember that happening, um, ever? So while i do think it was largely due to better body awareness by ronny, the goal of limiting fouls in the first half was accomnplished. Yes, we did get beat bad in the beginning, but i believe that was expected by Nelson, i think he wanted to see how the Thunder were going to play, before he decided how he wanted to play. To do so, he gave two rookies, who are desperatly in need on minutes, a chance to stand up to the Thunder, a team of, guess what? ROOKIES! There really aren’t any veteran players on that team, and he wanted to see if some of his rookies could come out and make some plays. They didn’t, and Nelly adjusted, by putting in a squad that could catch us back up. I know it sucks to have to play catch up, but it was only the first quarter. Had they played well, we would have been in a position to bring in maggs and ronny, fresh, to a close game with already fatiguing competition.
by BLWarrior on Jan 22, 2009 3:08 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
"only the first quarter."
Are you serious? Games can be lost in the first quarter. And this game was one of them. You start the best players (for that game/team) that are going to help you win, and start well. What did Nelly expect with Kurz and Randolph at 4 and 5. What did you expect? They get minimal PT this season, and then they are suppose to anchor down the middle? Yes Thunder have rookies, but they’ve been playing all year. A little different there buddy.
Games can be lost in the first quarter.
Yeah, Funny that people don’t realize that a basket in the first quarter is worth exactly as much as a basket in the last 1.6 seconds.
Now wheres the rubbers? Whose got the rubbers?
I noticed there's so many of them
and there's really not that many of us.
by Skeptic con Urquell on Jan 22, 2009 8:40 PM PST up reply actions
Turiaf can still start the game, and continue to get limited minutes early in the game. I would have complained if Turiaf started and Nelly let him foul out in the 3rd quarter (like in the Houston game). There is a happy medium. You know and I know that Kurz should not be starting next to Randolph. Period. Its just a recipe for a… well…. 14 – 6 deficit. If you really don’t want Turiaf to start, at least throw Maggette at the 4 and Randolph or Kurz at the 5.
As far as Randolph goes, my point is that he would be better used towards the end of the first quarter or early second quarter when the other teams starters are getting a rest, and their subs are in. This gives him the ability to begin playing against mediocre NBA competition instead of studs. Starting him doesn’t allow him to show anything (or grow) because he will just be constantly dominated by smarter, more experienced players, and then be benched for the rest of the game.
Nelly has reasons for doing what he does, as all coaches do. I get that. But there is just a better way of coaching these situations, that won’t leave the team as vulnerable as we saw them against the Thunder. And will also provide an atmosphere where players can have a opportunity to flourish in the right game time situation suited for them.
but if Turiaf had picked up two quick fouls in say the first 3 or 4 minutes, we would of been stuck playing Kurz for like 16+ minutes in the 1st half. Kurz ended up playing well, but b/c he’s a rookie, you can’t count on that.
and as stated earlier, the reason Maggette doesn’t start is to get him adjusted to coming off the bench (and not yo-yo him) along w/ the fact that this pretty much guarantees Magg’s doesn’t play more than 38 minutes (barring OT) b/c he’s out the 1st 5 minutes of each half and Nellie has to counterbalance his weakness of overplaying his main guys like Maggette b/c of Corey’s hamstrings.
Nellie probably (i’m obviously assuming b/c i don’t actually know) plays AR with the starters so he doesn’t get full of himself like he did after summer league. it’s only after freezing him out that AR started to come to early and stay late for practice… something all rookies/young players should do regardless.
also, growing/developing and whatnot happens in practice through repetitions. the only thing you get in games is experience. experience vs starters >>> experience vs back ups.
the game wasn’t lost in the 1st. the game was lost in the 4th when we were outscored by 7, 33-26, b/c we couldn’t play defense w/o fouling. the other reason we lost is because they were just hot from 3 point land 8-13, 61.5%… that’s 24 points in 13 shots or like shooting 12-13 from 2 point land. plus they had 85 shots to our 75.
by the evil monkey on Jan 23, 2009 11:06 AM PST up reply actions
I’m probably one of the more anti-Nellie and anti-Smallball people on this site, but I just didn’t expect to win this game. We featured a lineup of basically Crawford, Maggette, and Jackson, plus Turiaf as the only big in the middle trying to swat everything.
Of course we’re gonna give up 121 to the worst team in the league. Of course we’re not going to defend the last play of the game. Of course Westbrook, Durant, and Green were gonna tear us a new one.
But I don’t blame Nelson. I actually now support how he’s dealing with Randolph, and Randolph is buying into it as well. Nelson’s done a great job developing Ellis, Biedrins, Wright, and Belinelli. I believe he’s doing what’s right to make Randolph into a good NBA player. Right now, I care more about that than getting meaningless wins this season. Let’s get those ping pong balls, baby
pretty much. no AB, OKC 5 out of it’s last 10, and they shoot 8-13 from 3 pt territory.
i’m actually anti-Nellie too (i want a coach who teaches position defense like Thibodeau/Popovich, not this deflections/steals/blocks stuff – why i don’t support Keith Smart either), but i don’t blame him for every Warrior problem and fall for made up media stuff like he hates rookies when he’s played tons of them like Devin Harris, Josh Howard, Latrell, Webb, Tim, Billy O, Big Vic, Gat, Carlos Rogers, Tyrone Hill, etc.
there’s plenty of legitimate Nellie gripes, overplaying his best players, unsteady rotations… or if you hate small ball or hate his love of big men who are really guards.
by the evil monkey on Jan 22, 2009 12:03 AM PST up reply actions
hm...
if I remembered correctly, I think Coach Smart is now in charge of D.
Look on the bright side of things, at least it’s raining. We’re not gonna have a drought. One step closer to the lottery draft. And we get to see how the team plays without Andris. (I’ve always wonder how we would play without him)
And most, most importantly, you get to vent. Now, don’t you feel a tad bit better? If not, you better get some sleep…take some pills, that might help.
The rain is an apt metaphor
Because even though we may get to the lottery, it won’t make us happier this summer. We are not in any kind of position to land an impact player in this weak draft class.
In the same way, the small amount of drizzle we’ve received over the last 24 hours in this third year of drought will not save us from water-rationing this summer.
So, yeah. Be happy it’s raining. It won’t save the summer in any measurable way, but those tiny little cold sprinkles on your face are refreshing for a moment, aren’t they?
My first game of the season! I love the Arena. Brought way down to hear my favorite Warrior Biedrins was out. Missed the mascot and remarked on a general lack of excitement throughout the night. The SWA crew failed to rouse us.
Westbrook is awesome. I loved seeing Durant and Green in person. Although he killed us at the end I’ve liked Green since G’Town. All the best to OKC. With Krstic and Collison inside and strong guards (and perhaps Blake Griffin at the end of the season) this is going to be a real team next year.
Also good to see Morrow for the first time. He seems a little weak, no pop in his legs. But when he calls for the ball GIVE HIM THE BALL. And Kurz. I think it’s obvious why Nellie plays him. Right places right time, good execution.
Nelson is the best coach this team has seen and is going to see for a long time. He makes awful mistakes, etc. but anyone who thinks firing him and hiring ___x___ will solve our problems when half our team isn’t suited up needs to look up the definition of retardation.
nelson,
left CJ and JC in the game with 1.6 seconds left, ARE YOU KIDDIN ME? and hmm who was gaurding him? Why wouldnt you put AR, Kurz, or even Davidson in? Anyone with a little sign of D and some hight! Holy Sshhhh that was stupid. And why was JC even in the game for as long as he was? I said it a few times, but when JC isnt hitting his shots, he is completely useless.
and Morrow barely played even though his shots were falling.
Remember when Nellie gave defensive responsibilities to Smart?
Oh well… guy made a lucky shot: “I called glass”… from 22 feet? Almost straight on? Yeah right buddy… head to vegas with that game check.

maggette is so much better off the bench
our best players were in at the end of the game. AR, kurz and davidson can’t keep up with green on the wing. that was buike’s man. CJ is the only one fast enough to keep up with watson and jax was on durant. westbrook was inbounding. i don’t know who AR would guard and with that thin frame good luck getting through a screen. if maggette hadn’t have fouled out, he should have been in for crawford.
nelson made mistakes but they are not as obvious as people make them seem, really! the man KNOWS basketball.
crawford and CJ two of our worst defenders were there
They would at hight! shot blocking and long arm into the passing lanes.
why do people make it seem like theres some conspiracy against nelson?
like all of a sudden people just got together and decided to not like him for no reason.
*height
and i think CJ showed what playing a passing lane is. kurz sucks. i can see AR coming in, but not davidson.
ever notice how people with weak arguements or people who are reaching for any kind of "win" correct peoples grammer?
im kinda starting to notice things like this, its a blog; im not writing an essay for school.
Because playing Azubuike, Jackson, Maggette, and Kurz at PF (ahead of real PF’s like Wright, Randolph, and Turiaf) fails time and time again. The whole world sees that this isn’t working, but Nelson continues to go with it.
Last night
Seeing how much time Kurz was getting instead of Randolph was really making me mad.

Hit his shots, played decent D.
Since we are missing so many players, it makes sense to check out the 4 position to see who should backup bwright.
+1 on Kurz
He did play well last night. What do you think Randolph would have added to the game? Hit open shots?-not like Kurz. Play tough(ish) defense without reaching and jumping at everything?-nope
Randolph has earned a chance to play, but he is not the answer to all of our problems yet. I would say with the exception of Crawford’s shooting performance last night was a pretty damn good night for the team. You can’t ask much moer from that line-up (except fewer turnovers)

I have to agree on pretty much everything in the OP
And after saying that, I also have to ask: why have that not fired Don Nelson yet? This season has been one of the worst coaching performances I have every seen in all of sports, maybe even the worst.
Throwing up the white flag after about 10 games, the bad body language, extremely questionable decisions on who he plays and doesn’t play, not developing his young talent like he should have been doing for the last month or 2, feuding with players, alienating the most talented young player and playing these mindnumbingly dumb mindgames with him……….
I can’t think of many ways that Nelly could have been worse this year.
The only reason that I can see that the team hasn’t fired him yet is because he is coaching them into a better lottery position, so I guess that is something…….
the only way nelson could have been worse is if he had hurt Monta himself

Was have CJ Watson in the game with 1.6 seconds for defensive purposes. He should have had Randolph in dogging the inbound passer since they had no timeouts, but then again that would be considered coaching, and thats too much work for Nellie at this point.

I fully agree
Maggette should have started on the bench. And Wright should have started at PF from the getgo
-1
If Wright started the games he would just get into foul trouble early. With Magette starting we can get the game on track sooner: More offense from Magette, more fouls called on the other team, fewer fouls on our team, more ability to get to the line and control the tempo if the othe team makes an early run on us.
I agree Wright could haev played more, but he does not improve anything by starting
