And 1 ME8 MLK Tribute
I'm sorry. I know there's tons of Monta Ellis homers and apologists in Warriors Nation and across the NBA fan-scape who will go to no end to make excuses for this 23 year old "kid", but this is just plain silly. Someone please explain to me what plausible analogy exists between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Moped Ellis? What a dumb way to market basketball shoes, especially right after Moped Gate.
Looks like Ellis is not only getting bad advice from his agent Jeff Fried (lying about the cause of his ankle injury and publicly complaining about the punishment) but also the "marketing" team at And 1.
"They said"... Boycott this "MLK Tribute".

tasteless analogies like this happen all the time
remember the Apple “Think Different” ads? the chevron and bp ads proclaiming how “green” they are? all the commercials where beatles songs are used to pawn cheap consumables (nike, debeers, etc). companies will do and say anything to con the average joe/jane into believing they cannot live without their product—debasing the memories, achievements and talents of others is par for the course. boycott all advertisements.
wait a sec! did you mean to intimate that me8 isn’t the second coming of christ himself? how dare you!

Here's how MLK and ME8 are related...
I had to create a post to this because Atma’s post at the top this page is RIDICULOUS. Why are you hating on Monta Ellis/AND 1 for GIVING back to the community?
Here’s from the website….
So it’s a limited edition thing and proceeds will go to the MLK foundation. What’s so bad about that?
ME8 TRIBUTE
KICKS FOR A CAUSE
AND1 TRIBUTE is dedicated to those pushin’ positives, makin’ good, and takin’ it to the next level. Support of this limited edition series will result in a donation to the community – our extended family. It’s as real as that. Our inaugural shoe honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for his extraordinary leadership in the civil rights movement. We don’t know exactly how well MLK played the Game, but given his track record, we’ll bet he had pretty good handles.
WALK IN HIS SHOES, BALL IN MINE
Monta Ellis is proud to have his first signature shoe, the ME8, represent the first AND1 TRIBUTE. AND1 is only producing 1,929 pairs of the ME8 Tribute to pay respect to the year Dr. King was born.
AND1 and Monta Ellis are proud to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through donations to The Washington D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation Inc. and The Stanford University Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute.
“Dr. King gave me the opportunity to dream of a better life. It is up to all of us to follow our dreams in his honor.” – Monta Ellis
Do you ever re-call Jordan having proceeds of his shoes go to charity? Do you re-call ANY player having shoes with proceeds going to charity?
So unless you’re hating on Nike for pushing Livestrong or their current [RED] campaign than you should back relax off of AND 1 and Monta.
I am not naive. I know this is a marketing ploy but on the other hand I appreciate when people/companies give back to the community. it’s hard to put down whenever someone else is DONATING money back to the community. Every little bit helps.
Have you donated anything lately?
Just continue hating on Monta, we’ll all enjoy his time in the Bay.

No Doubt
Donate to The Washington D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation Inc. and The Stanford University Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute. But buying these shoes is a silly way to funnel money to these great organizations.
I’ve seen research that those old Miller beer scholarships spent more money advertising and promoting that they were doing this work than they actually donated towards these scholarships. I doubt this is a serious effort by And 1 and Monta Ellis and on par with that. I’d venture that they’re 1) spending more money actually advertising their efforts and shoe line then they’ll actually raise for these orgs 2) only donating a tiny fraction of their profits to them. Hey- I could be wrong. I’d love be proven wrong here.
Nevertheless the analogy between MLK, Obama, etc to Monta Ellis is just dumb. People talk about the lack of role models in this country. I don’t buy that. There’s plenty of great current and historical figures in this country, but when you trivialize their efforts by exalting someone with a very dishonest and immature recent past to their level to sell shoes, basketball tickets, etc you’re doing a huge disservice.
My last donation was to the Children’s Television Network (Sesame Street)- give back to them if you can. They do some fantastic work!

I don't see th analogy being made?
I don’t think AND1 or Monta are saying Monta = MLK.
The shoe is called… AND 1 TRIBUTE
Main Entry:
trib·ute Listen to the pronunciation of tribute
Pronunciation:
\ˈtri-(ˌ)byüt, -byət\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
Middle English tribut, from Latin tributum, from neuter of tributus, past participle of tribuere to allot, bestow, grant, pay, from tribus tribe
Date:
14th century1 a: a payment by one ruler or nation to another in acknowledgment of submission or as the price of protection ; also : the tax levied for such a payment b (1): an excessive tax, rental, or tariff imposed by a government, sovereign, lord, or landlord (2): an exorbitant charge levied by a person or group having the power of coercion c: the liability to pay tribute
2 a: something given or contributed voluntarily as due or deserved ; especially : a gift or service showing respect, gratitude, or affection b: something (as material evidence or a formal attestation) that indicates the worth, virtue, or effectiveness of the one in question
It’s a limited edition series with proceeds (we really don’t know how much, but again at least it’s something) going to charity.
So please continue….

I don’t think AND1 or Monta are saying Monta = MLK.
The shoe is called… AND 1 TRIBUTE
The slogan for this marketing campaign reads:
Walk in His Shoes. [MLK]
Ball in Mine. [Monta]
Not only is that ridiculously arrogant (at that Puff Daddy and Nas level- carrying a cross and getting crucified like Jesus in that “Hate Me Now” video), but it’s a pretty direct analogy between MLK and Monta to sell some overpriced basketball sneakers.
Let me be clear. The goal isn’t to paint Monta Ellis as the anti-Christ. I’m sure he’s a decent guy who just made some dumb mistakes. He’ll mature and be fine (I hope). The point is to point out how inane And 1’s marketing campaign is as well as it’s flaws. The bad advice and decisions that Monta keeps making aren’t helping the situation either.

It's saying to
try to live your life like MLK, but play basketball like him. don’t bring the arrogant crap out. He’s advertising his shoe. You don’t see Kobe coming out and saying, “Hey! I’m not as good as Lebron, but you should still buy my shoe.”
Nelly has wet dreams about starting Monta at center.

See, there you go... it might be a warning message
Monta doesn’t ride mopeds on the basketball court. So maybe he’s saying “Walk in his shoes”, WALK, not “Ride a moped in his shoes”… he’s clearly suggesting that the reader should NOT ride a moped in MLK’s shoes. See AB1, it’s all just a community service message.

Back up your statments
Point to a published article where Monta “publicly complains” about his punishment.
Monta + Agent
Let me be clear- I don’t think it’s just Monta’s fault. I think he’s getting really bad advice.
That ghost written apology letter was awful. It shouldn’t have even said they didn’t agree about the punishment- what a whiny way to begin that letter. There was never the words “I’m sorry. It will never happen again.”
There have been numerous published reports about Monta’s camp being upset with the 3 million dollar fine as well as the Warriors wanting to retain the right to void his contract.
(I’ll try dig up the links in a few hours)
BUT this isn’t even the issue here. I’m critiquing And 1’s marketing of this shoe and choice of sponsor. It’s silly.

I agree that it's a ridiculous marketing ploy
But that’s what all marketing ploys. Apple guy vs. Mac guy, anybody? The Paris Hilton Carls Junior ad? Seriously AB1, you’re really grasping at straws here and not grasping the full reality of… reality. Marketing is done the way it is for a reason, because it frigging works. You don’t like it. Great. I don’t particularly like it, but then I don’t really like any marketing strategy that is blatantly based off of barnacling onto somebody successful or well respected.
Furthermore, if proceeds are being donated to charity, WTF are you talking about? I understand your hatred of Monta, I don’t fault you for that. But the way you make immediate snap judgements on people and NEVER, EVER give up on them is getting ridiculous. I can just imagine the year 2050…
AB1 and FJ sitting on a porch somewhere in the bay:
FJ – “You remember when we won the championship in 2015, when Monta scored 35/game in the finals… man those were the days. Who knew we’d revert to the old Warriors so quickly after he retired…”
AB1 – “Yeah, but he rode a moped… and hurt himself. That’s unforgivable. Besides, we had to give up JRich for him. I don’t care if he won 2 MVP awards and brought us a championship, he rode a moped and rode JRich out of the bay. And for that, I can’t forgive him. Besides… he abused MLK to sell shoes”
FJ – “But he donated those shoes to charity. And JRich never did anything after that in his entire career”
AB1 – “Monta still sucks.”

XMas has become a fairly secular holiday in this country, so that’s an odd comparison. But I can see why some devout Christians might find all the Christmas consumerism who take that day to mean the birth of Christ very disrespectful. I’m not saying I’m personally bothered by all the Christmas consumerism, but I can respect their views and I’m not about to mock them.
Look Martin Luther King (putting aside his shady affairs) and the Civil Rights Movement in this country mean something really important to me and millions of other Americans. In my eyes this is trivializing it and really dumbing it down.

Puh-leeezzzz. Get over yourself. It’s OK to be cynical, but be consistent, otherwise you’re just being egotistical: “It’s OK for XMas to become a secular holiday, but not MLK day!!! That’s more important!”

Look (putting aside his shady affairs) and the in mean something really important to . In my eyes is trivializing it and really dumbing it down.
Let’s try Christmas, birth of Christ, Christians, Macy’s holiday sale. Or… President’s Day, Washington/Lincoln’s presidencies, Americans, Car sales. Or… Thanksgiving, discovery of America, Americans, black friday/christmas sales.
To suggest that MLK is somehow above being adopted by stupid marketing ploys is to suggest that the celebration of MLK should be above the celebration of other historical figures… drum roll… so you’re saying that MLK should be placed above Jesus, or George Washington, or the discovery of America? I know, I’m extrapolating an extreme case.
Note: I am not in any way shape or form trying to degrade MLK, the Civil Rights movement, nor the celebration of such events/people. I greatly value the effects they had on our society, and am forever indebted to the sacrifices of all people associated with MLK and the Civil Rights movement, and gladly take a day each year to remember them. That just doesn’t prevent stupid marketing people from using a powerful image to sell their wares… it doesn’t.

So, you don’t care that much about Christmas being consumerized, but a big “F You!” to anybody who consumerizes MLK day. I don’t think my exaggeration of your comments was that far off. Take out the “That’s more important”, and it’s pretty much exactly what you said.

Not at all. Those inferences are incredibly curious.
I clearly stated: I’m not saying I’m personally bothered by all the Christmas consumerism, but I can respect their views and I’m not about to mock them.
Hey I respect those battles. I’m not qualified or knowledgeable enough about those subjects to really say anything, so I step aside and listen those folks very valid criticisms. I don’t see why those upset about this silly And1 marketing campaign can’t get that same respect.
As a person of color in the US and the son of immigrants I have personally benefitted by the civil rights movement in this country. Drawing analogies to those people and era is sacred to me. Just like there’s very intelligent and passionate Christians who can break down the consumerism of Xmas, it’s my job to do the same for MLK Day.

I think the main beef you're getting at is that
a better sponsor could be had to market these shoes.
It’s a solid point and I do sympathise with you to some extent, because Monta Ellis is my least favourite Warrior, and was even before the moped accident.
But still, you can’t deny the good being done by what’s going on. Sure, Monta is going to get some undeserved credit and people are going to see him in a unnessessarily bright light, but who cares? 15 years from now, are people gonna care about this advertising campaign? Are people gonna look back on Montas career and think of this as a significant event? I think the more lasting impact made will be by the money donated to the charities that are involved.
So, while it does have quirks about it, the end result of things is good.
But, if anyone starts comparing Monta Ellis to Dr. King, they need to be put in an institution.

the end result of things is good
Well that’s where I disagree Z.
I see the end result being:
1) very little money actually getting funneled to these two orgs from this questionable method
2) the vast majority of money going to And1/ Monta
3) dumbing down and trivializing the important of MLK’s work
by Atma Brother ONE on Jan 22, 2009 1:40 PM PST up reply actions
Do you know that for a fact?
Nelly has wet dreams about starting Monta at center.
In general, money given to organizations usually gets eaten up in administrative costs
And little actually makes it to the end recipient anyways. Also, when corporations donate proceeds, they’re usually donating the profit (or part of the profit, as measured by their crack team of accountants who specialize in manipulating the books), which is a very small percentage of what is paid in the first place. So… you buy a $50 pair of shoes, maybe $5 goes to charity and $3 ends up getting spent on the actual mission of the charity…
But for $5/pair ($9,645 for 1,929 shoes, or less than what they’ll spend marketing the campaign), the corporation is seen as this benevolent force associated with whatever charity they’ve donated to! Isn’t marketing great!

I agree that we should all hate stupid marketing ploys
But you’re particular picking on MLK day and the way your ire is directed at Monta is what bothers me and it flows right with your constant “Monta is evil and immature” mantra. This is a marketing gimmick run by AND1. If you want to get pissed at anybody, get pissed at them.
If you’re going to pick on stupid marketing ploy, be consistent and blame the right people. This one is better than other ploys. It’s not like car companies donate to charity when they go after the President’s day affiliation, they just use it to make money. The peep hawkers at Easter don’t donate to the Catholic church. The AND1 “donation” may be a pittance, but at least it’s something…
If your sole goal is to donate money to a charity, you certainly have better avenues, but if you’re looking to buy some new kicks, why not buy ones that donate some proceeds to charity.
If you’re bashing Monta for AND1’s marketing gimmick, I fully expect to see a full front page spread bashing the Easter Bunny, Cadbury, Walgreen’s, Safeway, etc. for desecrating Easter and the rebirth.
