Monta's return, a look on the bright side (& another great trade idea!)

Finally. Monta Ellis is back on the court.

After Monta Ellis growing into his near super-star form, only to irresponsibly injure himself just after receiving the role of being the Warriors franchise player, it is great to see Monta playing again. While in many ways one can blame Monta for this throw-away season and the grief he has caused the organization, there are a few key positives to the situation.

The Warriors record is bad, really bad. Without Monta there was no chance at the playoffs and now the Warriors hover around the bottom 6 in the league. If you think about it though, did the Warriors ever have a shot this year? If Monta was playing from the start there would have been a core of young Monta and younger Biedrins surrounded by a surplus of swingmen like Maggette, Jackson, and Azubuike. At best the Warriors would probably end up one or two spots out of the playoffs, again. Could the Warriors even beat out Dallas to then battle Phoenix for the 8th seed? And of course all while under experiment of the franchise player in a new position.

Monta Ellis as a point guard. He has always been a shooting guard, combo guard at best with the great Baron Davis along side him to push the success of the team. There has been debate as to whether or not Monta can run the show on his own. Well now he has a great team to try it on. While a plethora of swingmen won't win a championship, it can be good for Monta to have to run a team with many versatile players. Even if Monta turns out to be a dud at point guard would that really be all that bad? That would mean the Warriors would stay in the bottom 6 in the league, and have a great shot at being able to draft a true point guard through the draft.

So either Monta does great at point guard and the Warriors get a draft pick in the 7 to 12 range, or Monta goes back to shoot guard (where he became the great player he is) and the Warriors get a draft pick in the top 6. As bad as this season is, those two possibilities are not so bad after all that has happend.

It's going to be exciting to watch Monta go back to being one of the fastest players in the league and develop his point guard skills. The team record might be bad the future may be bright.

P.S. Along with this optimistic look at things I have a trade idea. It's almost common knowledge now that Elton Brand is not working out in Philadelphia.

The Warriors have two natural shooting guards in Monta and Jamal, and they have two small forwards in Jackson and Maggette. I'd like the Warriors to use Don Nelson's original line up of Monta, Jackson, and Maggette; which would mean trading Jamal somehow to either clear up space for signing Boozer this summer, or even better, getting Brand now. My proposed trade is Jamal Crawford and Brandan Wright for Elton Brand:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=91~165~3242&teams=9~20~20&te=&cash=

PG: Monta Ellis

SG: Stephen Jackson

SF: Corey Maggette

PF: Elton Brand

C: Andris Biedrins

DAMN! Look at that line-up!

Love the idea

not sure why the 76ers would do it though. Even if Brand isnt working out for the moment, he’s obviously a stud PF that most teams would love to have, and I imagine that they will be patient with him fo rthe next season or 2. And if not, maybe other teams have more attractive options? Crawford is awesome, but im not sure why Philly would want or need him unless they can include andre miller in the situation and get someone else in return…but again, im not sure who we could inlcude contract wise and talent wise (but im not overly familiar with Philly and their needs). The more realistic option would be to make a play for boozer, but with our contract situations, I dont think that could happen. Even if we made a trade to clear some space, Im not sure if we could land him…good looking out on the PF front..obviously we need one!

I like it because

Jamal is hot right now and would fit in that style of play, and brandan still has big potential

by dancingchiapet on Jan 23, 2009 10:00 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I know the talent speaks for itself

but with Lou Williams, Andre Miller, AI2, Kareem Rush, Royal Ivey, and Willie Green, Im not sure why they need another guard. Obviously they’re not all great guards, but between williams, AI2, Ivey and miller, they have more than enough to cover they’re guard position without having another, despite how good he (crawford) may be. Especially when their other big men are donyell marshall, reggie evans, theo ratiliff, samuel dalembert (who has not been good this year) and mariese spieghts. Cant see why they would think that another talented guard and “potential” big man would be better than an all star PF…just my opinion though, and im not all that big on Wright…so if this could happen I would love it!

are you kidding me?

monta just got back, give monta time, he did great considering he’s been out for 9 months. don’t get me wrong, i like craw, but monta is definitely better.

by Ali luvs monta on Jan 24, 2009 6:57 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yup.

He’ll outscore him … ‘cos he’ll have played 43 more games.

If you’re saying that Jamal freaking Crawford is, has been, or ever will be a better player than Monta … well, wash your mouth out, son.

Thing 1

If you’re saying that Jamal freaking Crawford is, has been, or ever will be a better player than Monta …

If Montay puts together three 50 point games and learns to dribble we’ll talk.

Now wheres the rubbers? Whose got the rubbers?
I noticed there's so many of them
and there's really not that many of us.

the 76ers play a similar type of game we play, but Elton Brand couldn’t fit into their play style. . . so he probably wouldn’t fit into ours either. Besides, I don’t think the 76ers would accept that trade anyways.

Ellis to the RIM!
Monta for the win?! YES!

the only thing that makes sense.

As far as trades go, OK, if we can get an all-star caliber power forward for a couple excess 2’s and 3’s, that would be fine, but I don’t know why we keep trying to trade for 4’s. We have Wright, Turiaf, AR, Corey, who all can play some 4. What we need is a 5. We have one 5 (Beans), and Turiaf, who is a 4/5. We’re thin at the biggest position.
I like this team, it is extremely entertaining, very young, lots of talent, the chemistry has to happen. If it does, and we have a healthy team, we could be a good team next year.
We need a 5 who can spell Biedrins, match up with the big guys when other teams go big with their twin towers. Getting a 5 would allow Turiaf to start opposite Biedrins, then bring in a scoring PF off the bench.
Our guys play with intensity, they are athletic, and make bonehead plays every game. We’re so young, they are going to improve on the team defense and team rebounding just by playing together the rest of this season.
I enjoy every game, even this heartbreaking loss was extremely fun to watch.

by mayelamingi on Jan 24, 2009 6:44 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

What we need is a 5?!

Andris and Turiaf are a fine combo at the Center position – starting them together would not be a very potent strategy offensively – what we NEED is a legit PF and if the playoffs are even a hope for 2009-10 then we need one from another source than “Wright, Turiaf, AR, Corey”

Wright may very well be a good back up to a legit PF by next season
Turiaf is better suited as a back up C
AR isn’t sure what he’s doing nor can we be sure what he’s suited for – PF? SF? either way, we shouldn’t be counting on anything beyond backup role from him next season either
Corey at PF has been tried and fails nearly every time, despite his good # vs Cleve, we got killed inside

… we HAD a PF who fit Nelson’s system, but we traded him away for another ‘tweener PG/SG with a huge contract … maybe we’re realizing that wasn’t such a great move … maybe Somar was right, and we can snatch Amare? (probably not, and whatever happened to that post anyway?)

I dont think they should do that.. hope that Jamal dosent opt out of final year and let B.Wright develop cuz he has alot of talent.

1.Jamal
2.Monta
3.Stephen
4.Wright
5.Andris
———————
6.Maggette’os
7.Buike
8.Morrow
9.Cj\ Ronny
10.Randolph

Well atleast for this year, but again i see what your saying bro. We desperately need a big high impact PF..but i think Wright can get the job done, remember he was locking Gasol down in Oracle till he got hurt.

Anyone agree?

i like it....but by next season im sure randolph will be higher...and cj will be traded (high trade val)...and u forgot about bellineli

Good post, but...

I wouldn’t trade away BWright for another PF. I’d go with JC and CJ as the first to trade on this team. Like I’ve said before, CJ has been really clutch lately, but we have TONS of scorers who can score as well or better than him, and play much better defense than he does. If we could somehow trade CJ/JC/Williams/Kurz or any combo of those guys for a legit PF and pick up a good rookie PG next season, that’d be pure hotness.

CJ/JC/Williams/Kurz or any combo of those guys for a legit PF - ?!

c’mon, you gotta at least try to think about the other side in a trade – JC and CJ as the first to trade – for who?

JC’s contract is an albatross, CJ is a nice back up tweener guard (dime a dozen), Williams? Kurz?!

yeesh

Are you out of your mind...

First of all we need Jamal Crawford to run our offense because Jackson can’t run it properly himself. Second of all Boozer wants to go to a team where he can be the MAN!
Their are to many egos on the Warriors squad. Third of all don’t you ever mention something so stupid ever again. Even if we were to get elton brand from the 6ers, he’s to injury prone.

by Richboievans on Jan 24, 2009 3:55 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

WHY?

The Sixers were a fast-paced running team that was on the verge of breaking into the playoffs- until they got brand which slowed everything down ad screwed them up. WHY would we do the same thing? Also, we offered brand a contract for more than the Sixers and he didn’t want to come here… why trade for someone who has no interest in playing for you?

Elton Brand?The Underachiever?

haha HELLS NO, Carlos Boozer or any other star foward is much better than him. He’s OVERRATED.

honestly?

brand the underachiever? and you want boozer? brand isn’t an underachiever, he destroyed his achilles. boozer on the other hand, well, ask a jazz fan…

another trade idea...

We cut our ties with that cancer name Randolph and trade him and our 1st round pick to move up in the draft (assuming we do not win the lottery). Odds our that the Warriors will finish with 25 to 30 wins and be picking around 8th in the draft. If we could package Randolph’s potential and our lotto pick to get either Monroe or to the top spot and get Griffin then I think we’ve solved our PF problem.

A Sonics fan without a team.. Though I'm auditioning GS Warriors this season.

Monroe or to the top spot and get Griffin

No one is going to trade us Griffin for Rudolf
