Kill Small Ball Movement

After the incredibly bad 2 games we just played it is time we get our stuff together.  It is time someone fedex's a map to nelson with directions how to remove his head from his own azz.  Small ball kills us.... I wish there was a stat on our +/- differential when we decide to go small ball.  I will fund the KILL SMALL BALL MOVEMENT if someone can come up with those stats.

I am tired of playing good games with big lineups only to switch things in the late 3rd- and 4th quarter to a lineup of CJ, Crawford, Buike, Jax, Beidrins.  It does not help when we a smaller than the other team at every position.  Especially because we have no freak athletes like Josh Smith, that can bang with people 3 inches taller than them.  And we don't have guards that can run circles around other guards.

Since we don't have a quick team, and we don't have a big team, we need to adjust how we play.  Nelson's small ball lineup works when you have a quick, strong guard core that forces turnovers.  We do not have that so it is time to scratch that game plan.

I don't care if Randolph thinks he is KG, as arogant as he is.  He will not get better with his azz ont he bench.  Wright, Randolph, and even Kurz should be the only ones splitting time at the 4. (Turiaf as well)  Stop this Buike and Maggs at the 4 crap.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

nellie's a loser

and he has NO idea how to do anything other than nellie-ball, so your wish, though well-intentioned, is an impossible dream. he is nothing but a poor man’s mike dantoni. his players actually become much better when they leaave his idiotic system, and others (like maguette) become much worse when they enter said system. he is a disgrace to evolved thinking.

thats cold

your right about thats all he likes to do, even though he himself said the tall lineup was better..and how hes a poor mans mike dantoni.,. but not al right about the people getting better, aka BD, and i tihnk jackson would too..but everyone else, yep

Gosh I hope Nellie reads this! Someone telling him how his own system works.

I wonder if anyone else is sick of hearing someone with a new idea on how to run this team every day. I’m willing to bet none of us has ever played in the NBA, and very few if any have ever coached at any level. Even if there secretly are geniuses among us, we don’t get to see the players in practice, don’t get to sit by the on the bench, don’t get to talk to them every day. Yet every other poster fancies himself a greater basketball mind than Nelson and his assistant coaches.

As the mom in Juno said, “I think we both ought to stick to what we know.”

I have no problem with legitimate, intelligent discussion. Even if it’s just casual fans collectively taking shots in the dark. But posts like this are exactly the opposite…

nellie's a loser

and HE MEETS ALL OF YOUR CRITERIA for running the team—so why do the warriors still suck so badly??????

by nelliehater on Jan 3, 2009 1:01 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

because the roster is awful.

don't know who we'd play big

ronny and beans can’t play the whole game. wright and randolph don’t count as “bigs”. kurz can play some a suppose but he is terrible.

HAVEN'T YOU HEARD?!?

Playing Randolph, Wright, and Biedrins together would solve all our problems. Including my relationship problems and the economy.

nellie's a loser

and bd was terrific with the hornets—long before nellie had him. and as for jackson, he was quite good with indy, but his head was screwed up. ANY team would have been a fresh injection.
and actually, nellie has placed to much importance on jackson’s role. nellie hurts the team by playing him too many minutes—he is a VERY overrated offensive player who often damages the team by ball-hogging and 3-point clanking. much of this was hidden when bd was on the team, but w/o bd—wow!

by nelliehater on Jan 3, 2009 12:58 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

good points about the roster.

jackson shouldn’t be a number one option, but neither should any other guys on the team. who replaces jackson as the number one option on this team. mags? everyone seems to love him. crawford? that seems like a great way to use up 4 seconds of shot clock before firing up a wild contested jumper.

if only we had good players on this team, we wouldn’t be whining about the coach. if you think that the warriors problems would be solved by firing nellie and bringing in some other recently fired coach, i don’t know what to tell you. losing baron was not good for the team’s short term future, that’s clear. losing monta was a disaster. now what the warriors are left with is a bunch of number 3 or 4 options trying to prove they can be a number 1 option. this is not a team built to win, sorry.

nellie's a loser

and i have written much on the topic on these posts—look it up. but if one were to accept your belief, then there is NO REASON to keep nellie and his bloated salary, if he doesn’t have the players. pay some other stiff a coupkle of hundred g’s to run the team—there will be plenty of good applicants.
BTW, he has EXACTLY the team he wants—he traded, didn’t trade, and drafted ALL OF THE CURRENT PLAYERS. therefore, it’s all his fault.

oh ok

i was unaware that nelson had been the gm and owner for the past few years. my fault. he is the worst guy ever.

nellie's a loser

and don’t you be so stupid as to think that a guy like nellie, especially with his bloated salary, is leaving trades and drafts to some front office puke—NO WAY IN HELL!!!!!!!!!! he has the final say, unless countermanded by the owner.

by nelliehater on Jan 3, 2009 6:57 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

totally agree

there is clearly an under the table agreement that gives nelson total control. with that control, he signs, drafts and trades for players who hates and never gives a fair shake to. he is trying to destroy the warriors with his super powers of manipulation. also, global warming is his fault.

nellie's a loser

and that was TWO seasons ago, and that’s nellie to a tee—surprise everyone by winning one first round series every 5 years, then leaving the team in shambles—remember 1994?

by nelliehater on Jan 3, 2009 6:59 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

surprise everyone by winning one first round series

Then piss them off by trading away the heart of the team.

Have to say I have lost a lot of faith in Mr Nelson of late....

He just does not change the play quick enough when other teams adapt…..and most importantly he simply WONT pull Jackson off the court enough when our offense goes to crap around him….

That is poor coaching, I dont care what yor experience level is. If it aint working, change it up.

Defense has improved considerably but it is STILL bad!

Which pretty much tells me, that Keith Smart is not the answer as a replacement coach. I also have to say I dont rate Silas either…he simply is not get the big men to box out properly and that is killing us. Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to many 2nd chance points being stuffed to us!

All in all…..I think maybe a few changes are required as I dont believe the results reflect the potential of this team.

It's about heart, It's about fight, It's about being a Warrior!

We can't play big well

I’m not a fan of small ball anymore then anyone else, but when you look at our roster, our “bigs” = wright, randolph, kurz, turiaf, and beans. Turiaf and beans can’t play well together because they both are prone for foul trouble. Wright has also shown tendencies to get into foul trouble, as well as the same softness harrington had when it comes to crashing the boards. Kurz has actually shown some good things at our 4 spot, the kid can shoot lights out, but he can’t bang on the boards or against bigger men either. Randolph…enough said randolph is far too raw to be put in games for any consistent period of time.

The most we can hope for is that when the 09 draft comes around that the warriors either get a servicable big man in a trade or draft, or that wright develops into a true 4, which i doubt he will. Right now wright is the best we got at the 4, and thats not saying alot for playing “big”. Our roster needs to be revamped in order to effectively kill small ball style of play.

by kyzah on Jan 3, 2009 11:24 AM PST reply actions   1 recs

I agree that we don't have a per se "big lineup"

But I would rather see Wright, Randolph, or Turiaf in at the 4 then Buike and Maggs. At least by leaving Maggs and Buike at the 2 or 3, they are more matched up with people they could play well against

Roster Inflexibility...

We can’t do much to improve our roster because of the bloated Maggette and Crawford contracts. Our roster is going to remain unchanged for the next year or two, save for our lottery pick next year (cross your fingers for Ricky Rubio or that big dude from Oklahoma)…

I hate to say it, but the smallish lineup is our only chance to stay in games…

http://48minutes.net/

well, i know Geoff Lepper keeps track of it, but i can’t find where he lists the year to date totals. i know as of the Laker game he posted this.

The Lineup Project
It’s a triumphant return for smallball, which has finally passed up the "traditional" lineup in terms of YTD effectiveness. (The Small group is now minus-7.1 per 48 minutes; the Medium group is minus-8.1.)

Wishful thinking

PG:Monta / Belli / Watson / Williams
SG:Crawford / Morrow / Belli
SF:Jackson / Maggs / Buike
PF:Turiaf / Wright / Kurz
C:Biedrins / Darko Millicic :) (trade for Randolph)

This is what every coach in the NBA would play besides Nellie. Have Maggs bring the energy; he’d be the best 6th man in the league. We need to get rid of Randolph or Wright for sure. Randolph can’t shoot 3’s and won’t do any good playing the small forward position and we can’t wait 3 years for him to shoot consistently at the 3 spot. Also for sure we need a traditional center… Biedrins can’t be the only that rebounds on this team. I don’t care if Darko sucks at everything else, as long as he can backup biedrins and rebound/block shots hes good.

by bojangles408 on Jan 3, 2009 1:30 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Heck no

Darko= mediocrity with a bad attitude.

We already have a backup for Biedrins, and no, we shouldn’t play Biedrins and Turiaf together.

Randolph for Millicic?

Horrible idea.

Nelly has wet dreams about starting Monta at center.

nellie's a loser

and the whole problem is that the very idea (let alone practice) of nellie-ball is terribly flawed. he is just a poor man’s mike dantoni, and even dantoni couldn’t make it to the finals.
nellie’s foolish (and perhaps homoerotic) fascination with drafting and trading for the tallest, skinniest guys he can find—and YES, HE HAS THE ULTIMATE SAY IN THESE THINGS, NOT SOME FRONT OFFICE HACK WHO DOESN’T MAKE HALF OF WHAT NELLIE MAKES—cannot have a chance in hell of providing even a remote likeness to those phoenix teams, much less do better.

Let's face it, we suck!

We have no point guard, no post player, and no defense. What are we supposed to do?

nellie's a loser

and i’m quite sure that he will draft the following type of player:
7’3’’, 160lb, who grabs an eye-popping 3.2 rebounds per 40 minutes, and who thinks he’s a 3-pt shooter (although his 21% from the arc says otherwise).

now THAT’S nellie’s kind of guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
